VICAR Jane Durham is trading pews for peddles and getting on her bike to cycle across Somerset with the aim of raising £15,000 for her village church.
Jane will be visiting 15 St Mary Magdalene churches as she cycles 275km over five days.
The money she raises will help make St Mary Magdalene in Keinton Mandeville more accessible for wheelchair and mobility aids users, and for pushchairs.
“The changes will also enable us to host events and services for the community and congregation,” she said.
Jane said she used to love cycling when she was at her previous parish in Liverpool but a long-term health condition –which left her struggling with balance and using a walking stick – meant she had to stop.
However, when she moved to

Somerset, and with the help of a physiotherapist and lots of hours strength training in the gym, she discovered electric-assisted cycling and got back in the saddle.
Now, she is aiming to complete five days of riding in July, August and September,
including 3,450 metres of ascents and 3,731 metres of descents.
Her programme is: July 21 – Sparkford and Stowell (48km); July 28 – Ditcheat and Upton Noble (50km); August 21 – Exford, Winsford, Withiel Florey, Clatworthy and Taunton (58km); August 27 – Barwick, Cricket Malherbie and Stocklinch (64km); September 15 – Great Elms, Chewton Mendip and Wookey Hole (67km).

AROUTE through Yeovil town centre to the bus station has reopened as part of work on the Glovers Walk site.
Somerset Council said pedestrians can now get between Middle Street, in the main shopping area, and the bus station more easily after clearance work at was finished.
Created after the demolition of the former shopping precinct at Glovers Walk, the site will be used in the short-term as a green space, and has been seeded with grass.
Meanwhile, plans for the development of the site are continuing, the council said, as part of the Yeovil Reimagine project which will see the site, along with the wider town centre, host “a programme of large scale, site-specific art commissions, celebrating Yeovil’s cultural heritage and future identity”.
More details of the programme will be shared in September, the council said.
“The site includes a new seating area and safety fencing area along the rear of the former

building line,” a council spokesperson said.
“The changes have also allowed the council to provide an accessible toilet for passengers at the bus station and a waiting room.
“Stops at the bus station are being updated to make it clear where each service route can be found. Benches have also been returned to this area for passengers.”
Councillor Mike Rigby, lead member for economic development, planning and
assets, added: “We will continue to work with Somerset Bus Partnership to make any improvements or changes to help passengers.
“In the short term we are also working with a range of local partners through the Yeovil Reimagine project to develop use of the site and more detail will be shared in September as this moves into a delivery phase.
“At the moment though while the grass seed settles we would ask the public to keep to
the hard surface areas of the site.”
Glovers Walk was acquired by Somerset Council in September 2024 and later demolished, using government grant funding via the Future High Streets Fund (FHSF). Now, the council is working with community groups in Yeovil to come up with ‘meanwhile’ uses for the site while work continues on a longer-term development plan, part of a broader scheme to improve the town centre.
A BRIDGWATER man was among people arrested at an illegal rave in Dorset earlier this year - with fresh CCTV images released as part of the investigation.
Dorset Police officers were alerted to the gathering, near East Lulworth, at around 11.45pm on Saturday, April 4, with more than 2,000 people believed to have been in attendance.
Emergency services were on the site throughout the night and for much of the following day to "bring the event to a safe conclusion".
However, a Dorset Police spokesperson said officers reported being "subjected to violence by some present.
A total of 11 arrests were made over the weekend, including:
A man aged in his 30s from Bedfordshire was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and possessing a class A drug. He remains on police bail.
Three further men – a man aged in his 20s from Bridgwater a man aged in his 20s from Pembrokeshire and a man aged in his 30s from Poole – were arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and also remain on police bail.
A further seven arrests were made for driving offences and they all remain released under investigation while enquiries continue.
Detective Chief Inspector
George Graham, of Dorset County CID, said: "We are now in a position to release images of six individuals we would like to identify in connection with this matter and I would urge anyone who recognises them to please make contact with us."
Anyone with information, or who recognises the people pictured, should contact Dorset Police online or by calling 101, quoting reference 55260047858, or Crimestoppers anonymously through the website, or on 0800 555 111.

TONY Bartlett – who shook his four-week-old baby to death at a Chard home – has been convicted of murder.
The 39-year-old, of Axminster in Devon, was convicted after a trial at Bristol Crown Court.
Bartlett had returned from a night out with Atticus’ mother on July 16, 2022, and was alone downstairs feeding his son when the incident unfolded.
The baby, described in court as “fit and healthy”, was found looking “lifeless” and taking his last unassisted breaths by his

mother when she came downstairs.
The court heard how, despite the best efforts of medical professionals and neighbours, Atticus could not be saved.
He was rushed to hospital in Somerset, before being transferred to the Bristol Royal Infirmary, where he sadly died a week later.
Baby Atticus was found to have suffered severe internal injuries to his brain, spinal cord and ribs, with medical experts concluding the injuries were in keeping with recent severe head trauma and were “at the most

severe end of the spectrum”.
After the guilty verdict, Senior Investigating Officer, Det Supt Lorett Spierenburg, said: “This is a devastating case in which a very young baby has lost his life as the direct result of a violent and cruel act. The loss of Atticus has had a profound effect on all those who loved him.
“Tony Bartlett was alone with Atticus when he suffered these catastrophic injuries and the medical evidence gathered during the investigation proves he was solely responsible for causing them, despite his claims

of innocence.
“Our thoughts are very much with Atticus’ family who’ve had to endure a lengthy and complex police investigation, followed by a trial. They’ve shown great dignity and courage throughout.
“Investigations like this are extremely harrowing and I’d like to thank all those who provided evidence and supported our investigation to establish the facts behind Atticus’ tragic death.”
Bartlett will be sentenced when he appears before Bristol Crown Court on July 24.

ABRIDGWATER bus shelter which had all of its glass panels smashed by vandals has been repaired.
Damage to the Durleigh Road stop was reported to Bridgwater Town Council (BTC), which sent staff to repair it "to ensure the shelter remains safe and available for residents and passengers".
"The vandalism has resulted in unnecessary costs and disruption to public amenities that are provided for the benefit of the whole community," a spokesperson said.
And Councillor Tim Mander, chair of the BTC Amenities Committee, added: "We are disappointed that this bus shelter has been the target of vandalism.
"While repairs have now been carried out, every incident results in additional costs that

could otherwise be invested in improving local services and facilities.
"Bus shelters are provided for the benefit of everyone who relies on public transport, and acts of vandalism ultimately impact all users. We would ask everyone to help us look after community assets and report any incidents of vandalism when they occur."
The council encouraged residents to report any information relating to vandalism or anti-social behaviour to the appropriate authorities.
A CANNABIS "factory" in Frome has been dismantled - and five people arrested - after reports of "suspicious activities".
Avon & Somerset Police said vehicles were also recovered after a raid at a town address on Monday, July 6, involving officers from Team 2 Response, NPT and the Dogs Unit.
"A large cannabis grow was in the process of being dismantled," a police spokesperson said.
"Five people were arrested, and specialist officers have since dismantled and removed the cannabis cultivation. Vehicles have also been recovered.
"Our enquiries remain on-going, working with partner police forces and other agencies."
They said information from the public played a "vital role" in the operation - and others.
"If you have concerns about criminal activity in your area, please report it to us. Your information helps us take action and keep our communities safe," the spokesperson added.
To report anti-social behaviour, visit the Avon & Somerset Police website, or call 101. Always dial 999 in an emergency.

ABRIDGWATER soft play centre warns it is facing closure amid rising costs and a drop in visitor numbers.
Jolly Jumpers Playzone, in Market Way, has launched a GoFundMe campaign as it bids to keep the doors open during a cost-of-living crisis and rising bills which it says mean it faces its “biggest challenge yet” in staying open.
Founded 10 years ago as “a safe, welcoming and affordable place where children could laugh, play, learn and make lifelong memories”, the soft play centre said it had since welcomed “thousands of families”.
“We’ve celebrated birthdays, watched babies take their first steps before returning years later as confident little explorers, seen friendships blossom and created a place where parents, grandparents and carers can meet over a cup of coffee while their children play safely,” the appeal said.
“Jolly Jumpers has become so much more than just a soft play centre. It’s a place where our community comes together.
“Sadly, today we’re facing our biggest challenge yet.
“Like so many independent businesses, the rising cost of simply keeping our doors open has become overwhelming. Every month we’re faced with increasing costs for staff wages,

electricity, gas, water, business rates, insurance and essential maintenance.
“At the same time, visitor numbers have dropped significantly.
“We completely understand why. Families everywhere are feeling the pressure of the cost of living, and many have no choice but to prioritise essentials over treats and days out.
“During the summer months, when the weather is kind, families naturally make the most of parks, beaches and other free activities.
“For us, this can mean opening our doors for an entire day and welcoming just one family, while all of our running costs remain exactly the same.
“We’ve done everything we
possibly can to keep going. We’ve cut costs, worked longer hours and continued to give everything we have because we truly believe Jolly Jumpers is worth fighting for.”
And they said they needed the support of the community to keep going.
“Asking for help doesn’t come easily, but we’re asking because we believe our play zone is worth saving,” the spokesperson went on.
“Every single donation — whether it’s £2 or £200 — will go directly towards helping us cover the essential costs of keeping Jolly Jumpers open.
“Your support will help us continue providing a safe, warm and welcoming space where children can simply enjoy being children.
THESE dramatic photographs show how fire destroyed a tractor pulling a trailer full of hay bales.
The incident unfolded at Corfe, near Taunton, at around 11.50am on Thursday morning (July 9).
Firefighters from Taunton, Bridgwater and Wellington were sent to the scene and confirmed "one tractor and trailer carrying haybales were well alight”, a Devon &
Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.
In tackling the blaze, the crews used two breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to prevent escalation, as well as four sets of breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, one 45mm jet, one compressed air foam system jet and drag forks to put the fire out, which was completed by around lunchtime.

“If you’ve ever visited us, celebrated a birthday here, enjoyed a coffee while your little one played, or simply believe small independent businesses deserve a fighting chance, we’d be incredibly grateful for your support.
“And if you’re unable to donate, sharing our story with friends, family and on social media could make all the difference.
“Thank you for believing in us, for supporting local businesses, and for helping us keep this special place alive for the children and families of our community. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.”

ACOMMUNITY group campaigning to save a Somerset pub has been dealt a blow after a planning application to develop the site for housing was approved after an appeal.
The scheme means plans by the Wellington Pub Company for five homes on the site of the former Britannia Inn, in Bath Road, Wells, can go ahead. It comes after the scheme was refused by Somerset Council in December last year, with members saying it was premature to claim the pub was no longer viable, as well as a
lack of parking and more.
But on Friday (July 10), the East Wells Community Benefit Society (EWCBS), which has raised thousands of pounds in a bid to buy the pub and reopen it, was notified the plans had been allowed on appeal.
A spokesperson for the group said they were "shocked by this decision, particularly as the inspector's report gave significant weight to the importance of the pub as a community asset while at the same time allowing the appeal".
The appeal decision recognised the community value
of the pub, as well as the "strong public demand" for it to be retained and reopened, but concluded the development should be allowed.
The decision said "significant weight is attributed to the benefits that would result from the re-use of the site and the delivery of an additional five sustainably located houses that would help to reduce the shortfall in housing delivery within the area".
It concluded: "The proposed development would conflict with the development plan, but material considerations indicate
that a decision should be made other than in accordance with it. Therefore, this appeal should be allowed."
EWCBS said despite being "very saddened by this outcome", it would be meeting in the coming days and contacting shareholders to "outline their next steps".
Previously, the group had raised around £100,000 in a bid to oppose the planning application and to purchase the site and reopen it as a community-run pub.
The planning permission is valid for three years.

THIS year’s Chandos Society exhibition at Bridgwater Arts Centre featured an original painting by renowned artist Jean Rees.
The painting, loaned by the Royal South West Academy, Bristol, gave visitors a rare opportunity to view the work of an artist who played a significant role in the cultural history of Bridgwater.
Rees was one of the founders of Bridgwater Arts Centre, helping establish the organisation as a hub for
creativity and artistic expression.
Her daughter, Jenny Sharman, attended the opening with husband, Geoff, joining members of the Chandos Society, artists and visitors.
The Chandos Society annual exhibition showcases work by county artists across a range of styles and media.
Cllr Irena Hubble, chair of the arts centre and town hall committee at Bridgwater Town Council, said: “We were pleased to
display an original work by Jean Rees, one of the founders of the arts centre.
“It was wonderful to welcome Jenny and Geoff Sharman and to celebrate Jean's contribution to Bridgwater's cultural life.
“The loan of this painting provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Jean's artistic legacy while showcasing the continuing creativity and talent of our local arts community.”
The exhibition ran throughout June.

PRIMARY school children from across Somerset put their debating skills to the test at a special competition.
On June 29 the Blackdown Education Partnership (BEP), which manages a number of county schools, brought pupils together for its first Debating Competition, which it hopes to make an annual feature of the calendar.
Topics up for debate included ‘We should all stop eating meat’ and ‘Mobile phones should be banned in school’, with the young debaters impressing judges and audience members with the quality of their arguments.
Jo Carver, a teacher from Neroche Primary School and organiser of the competition, said: “The competition was created to celebrate the role of oracy in our schools. Many debating competitions are only available to secondary school

pupils, yet our younger students have shown today that they are just as capable of expressing their ideas clearly, presenting evidence-based arguments and listening respectfully.”
Judges praised the children, who were aged between eight and 11, for their “enthusiasm, preparation and willingness to

challenge ideas while supporting their own arguments with clear reasoning”.
Even younger children from year 2 at Orchard Grove Primary School came along to watch the competition and to have a go at speaking in front of an audience.
“Most importantly, the
children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the event, embracing the opportunity to develop their public speaking skills and work collaboratively with their teams,” a BEP spokesperson said.
Neroche Primary School, in Broadway, near Ilminster, was named the overall winner, while IKB Primary School, in Wellington, were runners-up.
Teams from Wellesley Park Primary School and Bishop’s Hull Primary School, were also praised for their performances. "Congratulations go to all the pupils who took part," the spokesperson added. "Their confidence, determination and ability to articulate their views made the event a great success and highlighted the wealth of talent across the BEP schools."

THE winners of the Ilminster Arts Centre 2026 Open Exhibition have been announced.
A special event was held at the Meeting House, in East Street, on July 8 to recognise those who took part and award prizes for their "outstanding talent".
The judging panel - Mike Lanigan, Fiona Campbell, Julia McKenzie, John Gammans and Bryony Tidball - spoke of how they faced a "difficult task" selecting winners from "an impressive field of entries, reflecting the high standard of work throughout the south west artistic community".
The Overall Prize was awarded to Anita Clark for
Cycling on Black Ice Is Not Advisable.
The judges described the piece as "powerful and intriguing with a defiant gaze. You almost breathe a sigh of relief at the title, but very nuanced and thoughtprovoking".
Runners-up were Gail Mason for Thicket and Emma Molony for A Company of Wolves.
Speaking about Thicket, the judges said: "A beautiful sense of light, colour and texture. Very evocative, with a strong sense of time and place."
And of A Company of Wolves, they added: "Another unsettling narrative that makes you think - a well-known tale retold. Beautifully printed and
delicately executed."
Highly Commended awards were presented to: Veronica Broadley – No More Pilchards, Jane Barnard – River Reflections, and Tom Watson – Look Within & Beyond.
Beccy Swaine and Fiona Campbell from Somerset Art Works, who sponsor the Emerging Artist Award, presented the winning prize to Ella Rees for Tongue-Tied in an Upstream Disco.
They said of the work: "Strange and magical narrative. A fish out of water and an off-kilter perspective. Wonderfully imaginative and well executed."
Judge Fiona added: "Great title. We felt it was strong,

brave, intriguing, with a dynamic composition and some fabulous fleshy tones. It feels awkward, in an interesting way. Although it clearly has a personal story, it is also a possible commentary on current times."
An Ilminster Arts Centre spokesperson thanked the judges for "their expertise and thoughtful deliberation".
"Thanks also go to Beccy Swaine from Somerset Art Works, Ilminster Deputy Mayor Cllr Ben Jenner-Hurford, and the exhibition's generous sponsor, Branston, whose continual support helped make this year's Open Exhibition such a success," they added.
"Congratulations to all of this year's winners and exhibitors for contributing to another inspiring and memorable Open Exhibition."
The exhibition will run until July 31, open from Tuesday to Saturday, 9.30am to 3pm.
Each winner is now invited to participate in the Prize Winners' Exhibition, to be held in January next year.

TAKING on the role of centre director at Clarks Village in Street has seen Mike Jones return to home turf after a career that has taken him around the world.
Mike began his retail career as a manager for Littlewoods in Yeovil but has worked 15 years overseas – including in India, the United Arab Emirates, the USA and Germany – as well as around the UK.
He introduced the M&S brand across the Middle East, launched the Drake Circus shopping centre in Plymouth as general manager, held leadership positions for the Xander Group in India, and senior global roles for Adidas in Germany and New York.
Clarks Village became the UK’s first retail outlet when it opened in 1993, introducing outlet shopping to the country.

And more than 30 years later, it offers more than 90 brands, from high street fashion and designer labels to homeware, beauty, sports and lifestyle, as well as late-night dining restaurants, including
Wagamama and Bill’s.
“Clarks Village is a truly unique retail location. It has successfully preserved its beautiful rural setting and landscaped gardens, offering a relaxed outdoor experience you
simply don’t find elsewhere,” said Mike. “My focus will be to showcase this distinctive offering to new audiences while ensuring guest experience remains at the heart of everything we do.”
WHILE Worthy Farm has enjoyed a break from hosting hundreds of thousands of revellers for the Glastonbury Festival this year, work continues on the Pilton farm.
As the fields took some time out to recover and the cows enjoyed more time on their grassland, work was afoot to boost the farm's renewable energy.
Worthy Farm has for some time utilised solar energy and this year has boosted its rooftop solar PV array and added new battery storage, now boasting more than 1,500 solar panels, making it one of the largest private solar systems in the UK.
The latest phase of the programmeinstalled by renewable energy specialists SolarSense, who have been working with the team at Worthy since 2010 - has added around 450 state-of-the-art 460W TCL SunPower modules which will help generate around 387,000kWh of electricity each year.
"Our whole philosophy is about preserving the environment and driving self-sufficiency plans," said Steve Kearle, manager at Worthy Farm.
And he said festival goers will be able to check out the new array when they return next year - as the panels will be visible atop the cowsheds on the brow of the hill opposite the iconic Pyramid Stage.

HOUSEHOLDS and motorists are being warned to protect themselves against theft during the summer months.
Avon & Somerset Police said officers had seen a rise in vehicle crime in Bath and North East Somerset and across Somerset in recent weeks, including burglars targeting insecure properties to steal car keys.
Superintendent Ronald Lungu, of local policing Bath and North East Somerset and force local crime lead, said: "While summer brings longer, brighter days, the warmer weather also sees an increase in opportunistic burglaries and car thefts.
"We urge residents to remain vigilant, report any suspicious
activity, and review security arrangements and how keys are stored.
"During periods of hot weather, people are also more likely to leave windows, doors or vehicles open. Even when trying to keep cool, it’s important not to compromise your security. Please do what you can to make your home and vehicles a harder target for burglars."
Tips to avoid becoming a victim of crime this summer from Avon & Somerset Police include:
n Check doors and windows are closed and locked. If you have an alarm, ensure you use it when locking up at night, as well as when you go out. During hot weather, avoid

leaving accessible windows or doors open when a property is unattended.
n Keep both house and car keys out of sight and reach. A significant amount of vehicle crime is committed when car keys are stolen during burglaries. Keep keys in a locked cupboard or cabinet or, at night, take them to bed with you. Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place, such as under a doormat or in a flowerpot.

n Invest in a key safe or lock box to securely store your house and car keys when you are not using them. These can be purchased for as little as £5.
n Use a signal-blocking pouch (Faraday Bag) to help prevent keyless car thefts. These can also be purchased for as little as £5.
n Use security lighting. Security lights with sensors at the front and back of your property can deter opportunistic
criminals. Internally, time switches can be used to turn on lights, radios and other appliances while you are out. This will give the impression that someone is in the property when no one is home.
n Ensure your car is secure when unattended. Always close windows, remove valuables from view and lock your vehicle, even if for a short period. During a heatwave, avoid leaving windows partially open when parking as this can make your vehicle a much easier target.

The brand, the official timekeeper for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, was founded by Auguste Agassiz and his nephew Ernest Francillon pioneered efforts to protect their watches from counterfeiters.

He ensured all timepieces leaving the factory were engraved with a serial number, the trade name Longines and its winged hourglass symbol.
They continue to be sought-after and prized and an 18ct gold Longines wristwatch, pictured, was the standout lot at the GTH July jewellery, watches and silverware sale at the Somerset Auction Rooms.
The watch, which was in working order, attracted attentive bidding and sold for £2,700.
Another name synonymous with luxury watches – Rolex - was also represented in the sale.
A Rolex Oyster Perpetual Air King super-precision wristwatch, circa 1959/60, enjoyed a good deal of pre-sale interest.
It was numbered and attached to a non-original black leather strap, but included Rolex service receipts and guarantee and sold for £1,500.
Prices of note in the jewellery section included £1,000 for a 9ct gold triple rope link necklace, £950 for an 18ct gold emerald and diamond cocktail ring, while another cocktail ring, this one featuring a ruby and diamonds, sold for £800.
An 18ct gold moonstone and old cut diamond ring, which showed some damage – a chipped diamond – went for £800.
An antique Indian kutch silver rice bowl depicting a rural hunting scene, including lions, elephants, tigers and riders on horseback sold for £850.
The next similar sale takes place on Thursday, August 6, from 10am at the salerooms at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, Junction 24, North Petherton. For more information, call the saleroom on 01278 410250.
THEATRE lovers can enjoy a new production of Charles Dickens' The Signalman at historic Somerset venues.
Pleasure Dome Theatre is bringing its latest adaptation to the Museum of Somerset in Taunton on August 1 as part of a regional tour.
Presented in partnership with the Landmark Theatre, Dickens' classic ghost story has been adapted by Jonathan Holloway and directed by Scott Le Crass, with acclaimed performers Gerald Dickens and Ben Fensome leading a cast of professional actors alongside local community performers.
This fresh adaptation reimagines the Victorian tale through the lens of rural life, exploring themes of mental health, loneliness and isolation while drawing inspiration from the impact of the Beeching railway cuts on communities across the region.
Experienced actors perform alongside community cast members, creating a production that reflects the company's

belief that "theatre should bring people together while nurturing local talent".
Starting with a run at the outdoor amphitheatre - the Valley of Rocks at Lynton between July 17 and 25, The Signalman will be at Knackershole Garden Theatre,

ASOMERSET walkway faces some steep competition to be named the Ramblers’ Favourite Path 2026.
The Strawberry Line path at Winscombe, in North Somerset, is among nominees for the accolade, which will be handed out after a public vote.
It is named on the shortlist alongside the likes of Buttermere Circular Path in the north west, and Worcestershire’s Malvern Hills, nominated from the Midlands.
Finalists were selected by a panel of expert judges, with the final eight up for a public vote which runs until July 31.
Amanda Jane Baldwin, who nominated the Strawberry Line Path, said: “It’s accessible in all weathers, it goes on for miles, it’s an absolute pleasure to walk on, it’s beautiful and I appreciate the nature all around me while on the path.
“It is maintained by volunteers which makes it all the more precious to walk on.”
Log on to ramblers.org.uk/ britainsfavouritepath to cast your vote before July 31.
The shortlist for the Favourite Path 2026 title – with the nomination details – are:
n North West England, Buttermere Circular Path
“This is the path that circumscribes the lake of Buttermere. I must have walked it 50 times: starting when I was little, with my parents; then popping up the M6 when I was visiting them; and, now that I finally live in Cumbria, rising early to catch the astonishing sunrises.
“I think it is one of the most beautiful places in the world; and can understand why Alfred Wainwright did too – it is a place to go when your mind is racing, to let the rugged beauty overwhelm your senses, and

calm you down. And, at just over four miles, it is a relatively easy route.”
Nominated by Stephen Ward
n East England, Little Ouse Path
“This footpath is special to me because it runs alongside the River Ouse in Thetford, Norfolk and I have walked and biked it so many times with so many people, either via the voluntary group I run, walking down it to carry out water quality testing, going for a romantic walk with my partner, to riding on my bike in the shade of trees on a hot summers day. So many lovely memories I will cherish forever.”
Nominated by Roseanne Gough
n Midlands, Pinnacle Hill Path
“There are several paths along The Malverns that are wheelchair/pushchair friendly and there are alternative paths that are not as steep which are more accommodating for those with limited fitness."
Nominated by Lauren Mundy
n North East England, Holy Island Causeway Path
“In 1973 I left home to be a trainee chef in a hotel in Durham. In between my working shift I marvelled and the city’s magnificent Norman Cathedral which could be seen from the back kitchen yard.
“I’m now at 69 years old nearing the end of my working

days holding down a part-time job which affords time to do smallish trails while I still feel capable so decided to do St Cuthberts Way.
“The final stretch across the tidal causeway. No one to congratulate you on your completion but a few Oyster Catchers, White Egrets but the magnificent sights of Berwick to the north. The mighty Bamburgh Castle to the south but your final steps reward you with the formidable Lindisfarne Castle."
Nominated by Ian Maggiore
n Scotland, East Loch Lomond Path
“Part of the West Highland Way, this path has a reputation as being a challenging section due to its rocky nature. There are many sections where you have to scramble over rocks and tree roots and it is narrow and often right on the edge of the loch. But it means it is also very beautiful. In summer it is busy with walkers but that gives a sense of camaraderie as you all face the challenge. At other times of the year when there are less walkers, the stillness is stunning, with just the occasional walker to share some encouraging words with before you each go back to the task of negotiating the challenges of this path."
Nominated by Janice Adcock
n South East England, Devils Dyke Path
“Apart from amazing views,
the trail is steeped in history with reminders still present. From the old steam railway’s watering hole, now an independent members owned golf club, sleepers from the old tracks, the old platform (being renovated), bunkers that Canadian soldiers used to seek shelter in during the First World War, to the site of a Victorian playground and reminders of the cable car turnstile, there is do much history to take in. And not forgetting the legend of the Devil at the Dyke.
“I started walking this path during Covid to escape the four walls we were shut in. It saved me from missing seeing my children especially my nine and three-year-old granddaughters."
Nominated by Sandra Foster
n Wales, Cwm Idwal Path
“This path up Y Garn is the perfect post work wander, whatever time of year. Up in time for sunset – views and light to die for! Coming up in the dark – epic moon lit mountains against a starry backdrop.
“It’s a hard slog up, but it’s almost like nature understands, and so rewards you tenfold at the top.”
Nominated by Grant Hyatt
n South West England, The Strawberry Line Path
“The Strawberry Line is on my doorstep, my car isn’t needed for this stunning walk! I moved to Winscombe, North Somerset over seven years ago and this path has been trod by myself more times than I can count. It’s accessible in all weathers, it goes on for miles, it’s an absolute pleasure to walk on, it’s beautiful and I appreciate the nature all around me while on the path.
“It is maintained by volunteers which makes it all the more precious to walk on.”
Nominated by Amanda Jane Baldwin

CAN you come up with a witty name for a new air ambulance? Or do you have a personal story that might produce a moniker?
It sounds a ridiculous question, but resident are being encouraged to get their creative caps on to come up with a suitable name for the new Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance helicopter.
The craft, the charity’s second helicopter, entered operational service in May following a fundraising campaign which involved thousands of people and businesses.
Now, in recognition of the community support, the charity is now inviting those who helped make it possible to choose a name that reflects the aircraft’s life-saving role across the two counties.
“Supporters are asked to submit their chosen name, along with the story behind it,” a charity spokesperson said.
“This could be inspired by their local community, a personal experience of the service, or what Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance means to them.”
Entries are now open and can be submitted via the charity’s website, by post, or in person at selected events organised or attended by the charity during the competition entry period, which runs until August 25.
Tracy Bartram, head of communications at Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, said:
“As a charity-funded service, we rely on our supporters every single day, and they are at the heart of everything we do.
“We know just how much this new helicopter already
means to people, so we believe it’s only fitting that the public help to name it and be part of its story in a really personal way.
“Every name entered will have a reason behind it, and we’re excited to see what people propose.
“We’re proud to give everyone the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on our new helicopter, which will help our team save lives for many years to come.”
How to enter your name in the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance helicopter naming competition:
• Online via www. dsairambulance.org.uk/heliname
• By post, addressed to Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Naming Competition, Landacre House, Castle Road, Chelston Business Park, Wellington, TA21 9JQ
• In person at selected events organised or attended by DSAA during the competition period
• Terms and conditions apply
The closing date for entries is 11.59pm on Tuesday, August 25.
“The winning name will become part of DSAA history, carried on the aircraft as it serves patients across the region,” a DSAA spokesperson added.
“All eligible entries will be shortlisted before a judging panel will decide on the final name.
“The winner will receive a photograph opportunity with the helicopter, a behind-the-scenes airbase tour and an invitation to an unveiling event later in the year.”
n For more information about the DSAA, visit www. dsairambulance.org.uk.
AN INFORMATION event will give potential foster families an insight into how they could make a difference to a child's life.
Fostering in Somerset will host a drop-in event at the River Cale Café, in Wincanton, from 10.30am to 1pm on July 22.
"The session is a valuable opportunity to learn more about fostering in a relaxed and welcoming setting, whether someone is
ready to take the next step or simply wants to ask a few questions," a spokesperson said. "Fostering can provide children and young people with the stability, care and support they need, while helping them stay connected to their local communities wherever possible."
The session is designed to be informal and supportive, they said, to give people the chance to explore fostering at
their own pace with no pressure to take things further.
A free coffee and slice of cake will be on offer as visitors can chat to foster carers and staff, who will be happy to share their experiences, answer questions and explain the support available.
n For more information, visit fosteringinsomerset.org.uk or call 0800 587 9900.
ALEADING Somerset psychologist took a trip back in time to encourage young people into the profession.
Dr Megan Rowley, a paediatric clinical psychologist at the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, returned to the college where she first studied psychology to inspire the next generation.
She was at Bridgwater College, where she studied psychology as a teenager, to talk to students about her journey into clinical psychology and what the role is really like day-to-day.
It came after one of her former lecturers got in touch and asked if she would be willing to come back to speak to current students.
"I actually went to Bridgwater College myself, and I studied psychology there," she said. "At the time, I was really interested in clinical psychology, but I didn’t actually know what a clinical psychologist did."
Megan explained that while she knew it was the direction she wanted to go in, she would have valued hearing directly from someone working in the role.
"I remember thinking I wanted to do clinical psychology, but I didn’t have the experience of somebody coming in to talk about what the job is like," she said.
"I felt that would have been really helpful, so when my old lecturer reached out, I thought it was a great opportunity."
During the session, Megan talked students through her route from college to university and into her current NHS role, as well as giving a 'day in the life' overview of working as a paediatric clinical psychologist.
"I wanted to give them a realistic picture of what the role involves," she said. "Hopefully it gives them an idea of what a clinical psychologist actually does, rather than it feeling quite

vague or abstract."
Megan has now run the session twice, two years apart, and says the response has been really positive.
"There are students who are starting to think about university, and others who are at the point of finalising their UCAS applications," she said.
"It’s quite a timely point for them, and they really value the chance to ask questions and think about whether this is the right path for them.
"Students are often keen to understand how a career in psychology develops over time, and what it might look like beyond education.
"The feedback has always been that it’s helpful to see how I’ve gone from being in college to where I am now in my NHS role, and how that could look for them in their
own careers."
She added: "I talked about the fact that I had a bit of a love-hate relationship with research methods.
"Research is an important part of psychology, and I did struggle with it at times, but I think it’s helpful for students to hear this, and that you can grow into parts of the subject you find challenging."
And Megan said the visits were about giving something back, and added: "It’s nice to support young people who are thinking about going into psychological professions.
"And it’s not just those interested in psychology, as there are students thinking about a wider health route who can see how psychology links into other work and with other professionals."
Jason Gunningham, principal
of Bridgwater College, said:
"Our A Level students found Megan’s visit incredibly inspiring, and it was fantastic to welcome her back to Bridgwater College.
"Hearing directly from a former student who has gone on to become a clinical psychologist not only gives a real insight into the range of careers psychology can lead to, but also makes those futures feel genuinely achievable.
"When students can see someone who once sat where they sit now, and hear honestly about the journey, challenges and rewards, it builds their confidence that they can take those steps too.
"Sessions like this are invaluable in raising aspirations and helping our young people visualise what their own next chapters might look like."

can instantly make a place feel more memorable, with coastal scenery, countryside views and lakes and rivers ranking among the views people most love to seek out.
Meanwhile, a quarter (25%) said they would post an iconic view on social media within a few hours, underlining how quickly Britain’s beauty spots can make their way online.
Nearly half of Brits (49%) admitted they have travelled to an area primarily because they had seen photos or videos of it online, with social media the most likely platform to inspire those trips (64%).
And for younger Brits, the internet is no longer just inspiring the itinerary, it is setting it.
Four in five Gen Zs (80%) have visited somewhere after seeing it online, more than three times the number of Boomers (25%), while they are more than four times more likely to seek out iconic city skylines when travelling (25% vs 6%).
Elsewhere, 75% of those who take photos of views say they are disappointed when photos don’t do a view justice, while 44% say their camera roll is full of multiple versions of the same
view because they wanted the perfect shot.
