Hundreds of tractors hit Somerset roads to see in new year - raising charity cash

OZENS of tractors took to the streets to see in 2026, Somerset-style.

The annual New Year's Day Road Run, organised by the Somerset Tractor Runners, saw scores of vehicles hit the road to raise money for good causes.

And hundreds of people turned out to see them as they made their from Thorney Lakes at 11am, taking in towns and villages including South Petherton, Martock, Merriot, Langport and Muchelney, over around seven hours.

The run was raising money for two charities - farming mental health cause Farmerados and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

"Thank you for all the farmers who have participated and all the people who have been out waving," a Somerset Tractor Runners spokesperson said after the completion of the trek. n People can still donate to the appeal online at tractorrunners.com.

Calls for crossing closure after teen's tragic death gaining momentum

ALLS for the closure of a rail crossing near Taunton where teenager Harry Basham tragically died are growing.

Harry, 17, passed away after being hit by a train on the crossing at around 7am on the morning of October 24 last year in an incident police said was not suspicious.

In the aftermath of his death, a petition to close the crossing was launched, which has gone on to garner around 2,800 signatures - and the backing of MP Gideon Amos (Lib Dem, Taunton & Wellington).

The petition calls for improved safety measures on the route - known as the 5/13 foot crossing - after the tragic loss of Harry, which organisers said "left an indelible mark on Harry's family, friends, and our entire community, exposing the urgent need for enhanced safety measures at this perilous crossing".

"The absence of basic safety features such as adequate lighting and properly functioning gates has created an unsafe environment, increasing

the risk of accidents and tragedies like the one that claimed Harry's life," the petition went on.

"Currently, the crossing has kissing gates that fail to click in securely, posing a further risk to those attempting to cross safely."

It added: "This crossing should have been shut immediately pending inquiries like the other crossings around the country that a child has died at, out of respect for Harry.

"Harry is this most amazing

"I have written to Network Rail requesting closure of this little-used foot crossing and will be meeting with their route managing director in the New Year to try and move things forward to the next stage.

After Harry's tragic death, his family paid tribute to a "brilliant and funny lad".

"We are absolutely devastated at the loss of our son, brother, and grandson Harry," they said.

"He was such a brilliant and funny lad, progressing well into adulthood and so incredibly talented at sports and so much more.

"He was and forever will be a star to all of us, and we will miss him and hold him close to us in our hearts always."

person and will be forever loved and missed and we will forever fight in your honour."

Now, Mr Amos has spoken out in support of calls for the crossing to be closed, and said he had written to Network Rail requesting it be shut, with a meeting with officials planned in the new year.

"My deepest sympathies are with Harry’s family and friends," the MP said.

"I fully support the campaign and the almost 3,000 people who have signed the petition

West Somerset could be transformed if £11bn tidal energy plan becomes a reality

W

EST Somerset could be transformed if ambitious plans for an £11 billion tidal lagoon of the coast between Minehead and Watchet become a reality in the coming years.

Proposals have been drawn up by the West Somerset Lagoon consortium, which says the project - including a 14 mile-long barrage with 125 underwater turbines - could have a maximum generating capacity of some 2.5 gigawatts, close to the peak output of nearby Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.

The consortium said the scheme could generate enough energy to power around 2 million homes - or the entirety of Somerset - each year for 120 years, taking advantage of the world’s second highest tidal range.

"The tidal range is over 10 metres, generating the maximum energy possible while minimising environmental, economic and visual

disturbance," the group said.

Environmental benefits would include producing around 2% of the UK's current energy demand in a zero-carbon way, while providing "protection to areas of the coast that are eroding continuously".

As well as the energy generation possibilities, the group said the plan could transform the Somerset towns, with designs featuring a host of additional developments which they said could "create an

exciting and vibrant extension of the seafront esplanade" in Minehead.

The proposals include a new 300-metre promenade along the coast adjacent to Culvercliff, extending 800m out to sea on the lagoon wall, where there would be a 300-boat marina and harbour.

Visitors to Minehead could enjoy "shops, cafes, restaurants and commercial buildings, hosting new business and employment opportunities for

local entrepreneurs along with the provision of community focused buildings" on the new prom, the group said.

"At the midpoint of the promenade will be an arts centre, an open-air theatre and cinema, open-air heated swimming baths and community sailing club. which will provide a real community provision focus for the scheme," a spokesperson said.

"A new visitor centre will be located at the end of the promenade which will accommodate an information and visitors centre with high level look-out by day and a bookable 'village hall' community resource at night time thus providing a range of offers for community and visitors alike."

The plans come as the UK looks to increase electricity generation amid a surge in demand as the AI revolution continues. Experts predict the booming industry could triple data centre power use by 2035.

West Somerset Lagoon's plans claim to avoid shipping lanes in the Bristol Channel, as well as steering clear of nature reserves and conservation areas.

Department for Energy Security and Net Zero chiefs have said they are open to considering proposals for such power generation, provided they demonstrate value for money.

increasing the UK's ability to become self-reliant for energy amid spiralling costs amid the war in Ukraine and more.

In March last year, independent experts from the Severn Estuary Commission said the tidal range of the Severn Estuary meant such a project was "feasible", and

could deliver "predictable, renewable electricity that would work independent of weather conditions".

The commission urged the UK government to "act now" to create such a project - like the West Somerset Lagoon.

The Severn Estuary Commission was chaired by Dr Andrew Garrad CBE and was launched by the Western Gateway last year - a partnership of the 28 local authorities across South Wales and western England.

And Dr Garrad said the concept of harnessing tidal movements to generate electricity had "huge potential".

"Electricity demand will increase with the widespread uptake of electric vehicles, electrification of heating, industry and proliferation of data centres," he said.

"We urgently need to get serious about how we can make use of our natural resources to meet this demand whilst also tackling our carbon emissions.

"Given the likely timelines for developing a project of this scale, we need to act now to ensure we can deliver the energy when it is needed and at

the same time safeguard the environment."

Responding to the commission's report, Professor Jim Hall, president of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), said there was a "clear, evidence-based, well-reasoned policy direction to make the best possible use of the UK’s greatest tidal energy resource the Severn Estuary".

"However, progress will only happen if the UK and Welsh governments put the right policy and investment frameworks in place to turn the commission’s vision into a low-cost, lowcarbon energy revolution," he added.

Sarah Williams-Gardener, chair of the Western Gateway, said: "After many years of debate, we now know that the huge potential of tidal energy in the Severn can and should play a key part in our energy supply.

"We need urgent action to make the most of this opportunity. A lagoon project would not only deliver predictable renewable energy, it could also add up to £12 billion GVA to the UK economy and 220,000 job years in the construction phase."

OMERSET residents received knighthoods, OBEs and more in the New year’s Honours list for 2026.

Dr Stephen Peter Taylor, chief executive officer of the Cabot Learning Federation, received a knighthood for services to education in the list, unveiled this week.

Dr Taylor, of Nailsea, North Somerset, leads the federation which operates 36 schools between Gloucestershire and Somerset.

“Since learning of this award, I have thought about all those colleagues in the Cabot Learning Federation and in the wider sector, whose work and successes have inspired me over the years to strive to do my best for the children we serve,” Dr Taylor said.

“Anything I would count as an achievement has come about as the result of working in collaboration with great people I have had the privilege of knowing, in the CLF and beyond. That includes a number of leaders in the Queen Street Group whose work in education has been recognised over the years, and I feel fortunate to have them as colleagues.

“I am extremely grateful for

this honour and look forward to sharing the news with colleagues and sharing the experience with my family, whose support I never take for granted.”

Elsewhere, in the list, Joanna Shanmugalingam, of Bath, was awarded the Order of the Bath for her work as second permanent secretary at the Department for Transport for services to transport and innovation.

Rugby star Marlie Packer, born in Yeovil, was awarded an OBE for services to rugby, while Paul Freeston, of Bath, former chair and chief executive officer of Apetito was awarded the same honour for services to the food and drink industry.

Bath-based Simon Taylor, a volunteer for the Liberal Democrats was also made an OBE for political and public service.

MBEs went to Martin Baker, of Taunton, the chief commercial affairs officer and managing director, Paralympics, at Channel 4 for services to broadcasting, Fiona Bloor and Terry Thatcher at the Hydrographic Office in Taunton, Bath’s Eileen Clark, vice-chair of the Pickwick Academy Trust Board and chair of the School

Improvement Committee, and James Deane, founder of Sporting Family Change, for services to sport and fitness in Bath and North East Somerset.

The same honour was bestowed on Jane Hadfield, lately a board member at the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, Bristol, for services to education, and to Martin Hodgson, of Axbridge, chief executive officer of the YMCA Dulverton Group, for services to the community in Somerset.

Chard’s Margaret Maltby, county president for Girlguiding Somerset also received an MBE for services to young people, while Street-based Sarah Massey, managing director for the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 was honoured for services to women’s rugby union.

Jonathan Wheatley, managing director at Stonebarn Landscapes Limited was made an MBE for services to horticulture and to charity, while Richard Clothier, managing director at Somersetbased Wyke Farms, was recognised for services to sustainable agriculture and food production.

The 55-year-old said: “To be able to improve the biodiversity

and the natural capital and make the air cleaner and be better neighbours is a really important thing for us.

“So to be recognised for that is a really nice and humbling thing and a real honour for the team as well.”

WOMAN broke her wrist after being attacked by two dogs in Bridgwater on Christmas Day. The victim, in her late 60s, was walking her dog away from Victoria Park when it was attacked by two others at the junction of Coleridge Green and Coleridge Road between 5.15pm and 5.30pm.

Police said the attack left the woman’s dog with a puncture wound and caused her to fall, dislocating and fracturing her right wrist.

She was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged to continue her recovery at home.

A man was reported to have been walking two Cane Corsotype dogs on a lead before they broke free. He was with a young female who managed to retrieve them, with the pair leaving the scene and heading back through Victoria Park.

ORE than 100 workers have lost their jobs after a Yeovil tool firm went into administration.

Toolstream, based in Boundary Way, appointed Hywel Phillips and Gavin Park of Teneo Financial Advisory Limited as joint administrators of Group Silverline Limited and Toolstream Limited on December 11.

A notice on the Toolstream website said the administrators were now managing "the affairs, business and property of the companies".

School's festive antics!

OUNGSTERS from a Somerset school spread festive cheer before the

big day.

Pupils and staff at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School in Midsomer Norton, part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, joined a host of Christmas activities, celebrating the season, supporting good causes, and spreading community spirit.

The celebrations kicked off with a fun-filled pantomime organised by the Friends of St Benedict’s, launching a series of seasonal activities, followed by a traditional Nativity, with pupils delighting families with their singing, storytelling, and carefully prepared costumes.

The festivities continued with a whole-school Christmas lunch, where pupils and staff shared a joyful meal together

and in the spirit of giving, the children also joined in Christmas Jumper Day, raising funds for Save the Children.

Colourful knitwear filled the school as pupils wore their brightest and most imaginative jumpers to support the charity.

Pupils also ventured into the community, visiting Whitehaven Care Home to sing Christmas carols and spread festive cheer.

Residents warmly welcomed the children, who shared smiles, songs, and conversations that helped brighten the winter season.

St Benedict’s rounded off the term with two special events.

Families and pupils gathered for the school’s Christingle celebration, a cherished tradition reflecting hope and togetherness.

The following day, children took part in the Dorothy House

Reindeer Run, a sponsored event raising money for Dorothy House Hospice Care.

Ellen Croker, headteacher at St Benedict's Catholic Primary School, said: "At St Benedict’s, we aim to nurture not just learning, but hearts filled with kindness. Seeing our pupils spread happiness and support others in the community

Fraudster - and failed Who Wants To Be a Millionaire contestant - ordered to pay £4m

RAUDSTER – and former Who Wants to be a Millionaire? contestant – Jeff Arundell has been ordered to pay back more than £4 million after being jailed for a series of financial crimes.

The 75-year-old, of Bath, was convicted of offences including fraud and money laundering in relation to financial dealings he carried out in 2016 and 2017 at a hearing in October 2023.

Now, as he continues a six-and-a-half-year sentence, Arundell was back at Bristol Crown Court in October 2025 for a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing.

And on December 19, His Honour Judge Blair found the total amount Arundell had illegally benefitted from was £4.8million.

He issued a confiscation order for the available amount of £4,140,428.59, of which more than £220,000 will be returned to Arundell’s investor victims.

If Arundell cannot or refuses to pay the funds, he will receive a further eight years behind bars.

The fraudster, of Sion Hill, Lansdown, invited a friend in November 2016 to join him in investing in what he claimed to be a guaranteed money-making investment, claiming he had information that shares in a pharmaceutical company were set to significantly increase in value in the coming weeks.

He promised the friend – and his friend’s family members who also invested – that he would personally guarantee their stake money if he was wrong.

In total, he received about £108,000 to invest on their behalf.

In early December 2016, Arundell placed the money on numerous trades of spread betting, but told the victims

within weeks that he had lost their money and did not have the funds to repay them as per the guarantee he made.

It was later discovered by the police Arundell had indeed profited on some of the trades he had placed in December 2016 using their money, which he had not told them about.

From the winnings, he continued to trade and place further bets, which in turn attributed to the £4.6m windfall he had accumulated by August 2017.

The friend and his family reported the matter in January 2017 and a police investigation was carried out.

Arundell claimed when he placed the trades in December 2016, he could indeed have repaid the guarantee, as he had received approximately £100,000 in inheritance from his late-mother’s estate earlier that year.

However, this was investigated as a separate fraud, as it was discovered he had taken his mother’s money, while

holding a power of attorney for her some years before.

By taking the money while she was alive, he had deprived other family members from inheriting from her estate upon her death.

Arundell was convicted of three counts of fraud by false representation and one of money laundering at Bristol Crown Court in 2023, in relation to £86,000 worth of money he received from his friend and their family.

He was found not guilty of a fourth count of fraud by false representation relating to the rest of the money he received.

He was also separately charged with fraud by abuse of position in respect of the handling of his late-mother’s finances in early-2020. He was convicted of this offence in April 2021.

DCI Carlos Filippsen said: “This is a significant result against an offender who was convicted of fraud and money laundering offences in November 2023.

“The convictions and subsequent confiscation orders in this case show how we will pursue offenders who directly target victims, including stripping them of any assets they have gained through crime.

“Ensuring that we have been able to return those funds to the victims and for the perpetrator to not be able to benefit from his criminal activity demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that crime does not and will not pay.

“I hope this will deter other criminals who may be involved in these despicable offences, by showing that they will be convicted and have their ill-gotten gains removed.”

The convictions came after a 2000 appearance on ITV game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, where Arundell proved as inept as he did with his crimes – walking away with a meagre £1,000 in prize money.

He answered a £4,000 question incorrectly, leaving him with the £1,000 prize and leaving the show.

FORMER Pizza Hut in Frome could be converted into a tanning salon, if plans are approved.

Boon Brown, on behalf of Consul Ltd, has applied to Somerset Council for permission to change the use of Unit 1 of Enterprise House, at Wessex Fields, from a restaurant to a solarium.

Pizza Hut formerly occupied the premises until it closed in 2020, when the site was taken on by Dough & Co, until 2022.

The plans said: "The ground floor will be occupied by Consol Ltd and operated as a solarium, offering artificial tanning services to the public on an appointment or walk-in basis."

"Minor external alterations to the front elevation" are also proposed, with the single door being replaced with double doors, the application added.

Films show reasons to #LoveYourLibrary

SERIES of short films celebrating Somerset libraries will be premiered in Bridgwater this month.

On January 16, the public will be able to watch four films highlighting services on offer to the community at their library.

The 90-second clips were commissioned under the banner of #LoveYourLibrary, with funding from a national partnership project – Digital Libraries – funded by Arts Council England (ACE).

They have been made by Glastonbury-based company Flying Tiger, and focus on four themes: n Supporting Health and Wellbeing n Employment and business start-ups support n Teens and young people n Services for parents of

Bird flu control zone “HIGHLY pathogenic” bird flu has been confirmed near Bridgwater.

H5N1 – a highlycontagious variant of bird flu – was discovered in a “non-commercial backyard flock” near the Somerset town on December 29, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed.

Now, a 3km controlled zone has been put in place around the premises, with all affected birds set to be “humanely culled”, the government body said.

The implementation of the zone means any premises where poultry and other captive birds are kept must maintain records of visitors – including times,

dates, and contact details – who come into contact with the animals, as well as records detailing any poultry entering or leaving the premises.

Owners are also required to report any “increased morbidity or mortality or significant drop in egg production”, as well as feed or water intake and any other information to authorities.

Movement of produce, such as eggs, must also be recorded by bird owners, with birds also prevented from contact with other animals, with vehicles used to move them thoroughly cleaned and disinfected in a bid to prevent transmission.

The controlled zone – with a 3km radius – is centred on the Dunwear area of Bridgwater.

Appeal after gang assault after Frome bus row CCTV footage of people police want to speak after an assault in Frome has been released.

Officers investigating the incident, which occurred at around 5pm on December 12, have issued the video in a bid to trace the group, who they believe to be teenage boys.

An Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said “a group of six people” opened the emergency exit of a bus in Cork Street, Frome.

“When challenged by the victim, the group assaulted him, causing injuries to the face, head and arms,” they said. “Officers are working to identify those responsible and are now releasing CCTV footage of a number of people they want to speak to.

“They are all believed to be white and were wearing dark-coloured clothing at the time of the incident.”

Seven injured

SEVEN people were treated for injuries after a crash on the A358 near Taunton on Sunday afternoon (December 4).

Emergency services were sent to the incident, in Thornfalcon, at just after 1pm.

A Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Two fire engines from Taunton were sent, and on arrival confirmed that this was a two-vehicle collision with one person still trapped in one of the vehicles.

“Crews assisted the ambulance crews in releasing the casualty.

“There was a total of seven casualties, who were all seen by paramedics on scene.”

Council tax rises likely amid public services funding gap

OUNCIL tax rises could be on the cards in Somerset to fund public services.

A three-year Government Finance Settlement - outlining how much the county authority will receive over the next three years - has been unveiled, with an increase of around 13%.

However, the council is assuming much of the rise in spending power will be raised through increases in council tax for residents, coming off the back of several years of above-normal rises.

Leader at Somerset Council, Cllr Bill Revans (Lib Dem, North Petherton), cautiously welcomed the three-year Local Government Finance Settlement for 2025/6 - but urged the Government to do more to increase councils’ spending power without putting the burden on taxpayers.

He also said the authority looked likes to lose out on business rates income as part of the plan.

A council spokesperson said: "Overall, when all aspects of the settlement are considered, the council forecasts that it will be marginally better off next year, but further work needs to be

undertaken to fully model the highly complex settlement.

"The longer-term view created through a three-year settlement has been welcomed as it will allow the council to better plan its budget, but the council is still facing significant funding gaps in future years, reflecting ongoing pressures in areas like children’s services, placement costs and homelessness."

Somerset Council plans a fresh request to Government for further Exceptional Financial Support (EFS) to make ends meet.

Cllr Revans said: "We have worked hard and had to make tough decisions to deliver savings, guided by feedback

from residents, businesses and partners, while protecting vital services.

"While the three-year settlement which has been announced contains some welcome news and allows us to plan with more certainty for 2026-29, we maintain our view that the current funding model is broken.

"Relying on increased council tax to fund essential, demand-led services such as adult and children’s care is not sustainable.

"Our work to deliver savings, innovation and the vital services we know our communities value must be underpinned by a fairer, long-term funding system that recognises the pressures councils face and the work our teams deliver every day."

Meanwhile, residents are being urged to have their say on finances and council services ahead of the upcoming council budget setting process.

A public consultation is open to all, with feedback influencing councillors as they look to set a balanced budget in February.

The survey closes on January 14 and can be completed online, with paper copies available in Somerset libraries.

CASH was taken during two burglaries in Castle Cary.

The incidents, on December 15 and 16, saw burglars force their way into properties in the town.

In the first raid, a property in Coombe Close was targeted at around 1.45am on the morning of Monday, December 15, with a “quantity of cash” stolen.

Then, at around 5pm the following day, three males forced entry to a property in Victoria Road before leaving in the direction of Station Road a short while later having taken a quantity of cash.

They are described as white, and were all believed to be aged in their late teens or early 20s.

“Officers are investigating the incidents and have been carrying out enquiries in the area,” an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said.

Anyone with footage or information that could help should contact police on 101, reference 5225351953 for the Coombe Close incident or 5225353271 for the Victoria Road incident.

Xmas Day crash A PERSON was freed from a vehicle after a crash in Frome on Christmas Day. The incident occurred at the Blatchridge roundabout, Selwood, at around 11.18pm, with fire crews from Frome and Warminster and Westbury sent to the scene.

A Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said the crash involved a single vehicle.

“Crew successfully rescued the person within the vehicle using hydraulic rescue equipment,” they added. “The casualty was put into the care of the ambulance service and the incident was handed over to the police.”

New Year, New Start: Rethinking N OW that the festive season is over and 2026 is here, the New Year often prompts reflection and the need to resolve matters.

For some, that may include formally addressing financial matters following a separation or divorce, or just thinking about what things may look like in the future. One of the most common questions asked at this stage is how the court decides what a fair financial outcome looks like.

A Fair Financial Outcome This decision is guided by a list of factors in section 25 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 (we’ll refer to this as s.25), together with principles established in case law.

The court is required to avoid discrimination between parties and to apply the overarching principles of needs, compensation and sharing. In many cases, particularly where resources are limited, the main

focus will be the needs of the parties.

The factors contained in s.25 set out a framework which the court must consider when exercising its discretion.

Understanding those factors is key to appreciating why financial settlements can differ significantly from case to case.

It is important that full and frank financial disclosure is provided by both parties. This is particularly relevant in relation to both matrimonial and non-matrimonial assets. All property and financial interests should be disclosed unless there is a strong and justifiable reason for exclusion. This includes inheritances, pensions acquired prior to the marriage, and other non-matrimonial property.

Where To Begin?

The starting point would be a 50-50 division of any matrimonial assets. This would then be adjusted based on different factors as they apply to the particular case.

The court’s first consideration is the welfare of any child of the family under the age of 18. This does not mean that assets are divided for the benefit of the children as such, but it does mean their housing, financial security and daily needs will be prioritised when assessing the respective financial positions of the parties.

This can affect decisions relating to the family home, income provision and ongoing financial support.

The court must then consider the income, earning capacity, property and other financial resources available to each

party. This is based on the current and the foreseeable future. This includes employment income, business interests, bonuses, investments, savings and pensions. One party may have reduced or paused their career during the marriage; the court will assess whether it is reasonable to expect that party to increase their earnings, and if so, over what timeframe, thus establishing a timeframe for financial independence.

Once the asset pool has been established, it forms the basis for assessing each party’s financial needs and responsibilities.

In some cases, this may include liabilities accrued during the marriage.

The court will consider what each party reasonably requires, rather than what they may wish for, and will assess whether those needs can be met from the available resources. This includes the standard of living enjoyed prior to the breakdown

Finances After Separation of marriage; however, this is not determinative as the degree of financial adjustment and required transition is also considered.

The age of each party and the length of the marriage are also relevant factors in the financial assessment. Age is particularly relevant when considering future earning capacity and retirement provision.

There is no strict legal definition of the length of a marriage, as this is a matter for the court’s discretion.

However, a marriage of 10 years or more is generally regarded as a long marriage.

Longer marriages are more likely to result in a sharing approach, whereas in shorter marriages the court may place greater emphasis on the parties’ individual contributions and pre-marital assets.

Non-Financial Contributions

The court makes clear that contributions are not limited to financial input. The law has developed and now takes into consideration the contribution of the parties during the marriage, in particular, where a break in a career has been taken to look after children or support and improve the family life.

This gives equal recognition to non-financial contributions and reflects the principle that different roles within a marriage are of equal value.

There are often questions about whether the reasons for the breakdown in marriage are relevant when making a financial settlement, that is, whether the conduct of either party should be taken into account.

However, this is only considered in exceptional circumstances, when there has been serious financial misconduct.

In these circumstances, the court will consider any loss of benefits, most commonly pension rights which may have arisen as a result of the divorce.

It is also the court’s duty to consider whether it is appropriate to achieve a clean break as soon as it is just and reasonable.

A clean break means a settlement that brings all financial claims between parties to an end, so that there is no need for either party to make further claims against the other in the future.

While every case turns on its own facts, knowing how the court approaches these decisions allows parties to engage more constructively in negotiations and to reach informed, realistic settlements.

Outcomes The s.25 factors are not applied mechanically as a one size fits all. The court must weigh them together to achieve a fair outcome, taking into account the particular circumstances of the case. This discretionary approach explains why outcomes can seem to vary

Get ready for love-filled races!

HEY say the way to a man or woman's heart is through the stomach and a romantic race in Frome could prove the rule.

Planning is underway for a family-friendly pancake race Stacks of Love - set to be held on Valentine's Day, February 14, in the town centre.

Stacks of Love is set to feature themed crafts and games for all ages, as well as a crêpe stall, with Ginny Adams, of the Rare Species theatre company, acting as compère for the day.

At 10-minute ‘waves’ throughout the event, groups of six pancake race contestants will set off from the Blue Boar and race up to the Boyle Cross, flipping their (fabric) pancakes as they go, in heart-shaped frying pans.

There will be themed waves for runners aiming for a pancake race PB, children, grandparents and some ‘open’

categories. For those not keen on running, there will be static pancake-tossing competitions at the Boyle Cross.

Frome Town Councillor Andy Jones said: "Join us on February 14 for this fun, inclusive event in the town centre.

"As usual on Valentine’s Day, Frome’s iconic Valentine’s lamp

will be lit at 5.30pm by new lamplighter Eddie Young, so why not make it a day trip out and go to both?"

Road closures will be in operation in the area during the event, which is sponsored by Andros UK, who are the UK suppliers of Bonne Maman jam as well as a range of chilled deserts.

The actor, who became a household name portraying hapless Barry in the BBC soap, has reinvented himself through a range of projects since leaving the show.

He appeared alongside Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant in Extras, and has become known as a performer through singing gigs and now, his Barrioke production - which sees him host a night of singalong classics involving himself and the audience.

It would be counterproductive to re-home animals inappropriately. The animal would be returned, which is something rescue centres want to avoid. The goal is to match the animal with a suitable adopter. Police answer legal questions over e-scooters

E

-SCOOTERS have been one of the most popular trends of 2025 – with the devices becoming something of a common sight on UK streets.

As many receive an e-scooter for Christmas, Avon & Somerset Police has issued some answers to common questions from owners and road users: Can private e-scooters be ridden on public roads?

No – they can only be ridden on private land, with the landowner’s permission.

What about on the pavement or cycle lanes?

No. The law says they cannot be used on public places, including roads, pavements, parks or cycle lanes. If you are caught using a powered transporter (e-scooter) on a public road, pavement, or other prohibited space you are committing a criminal offence and could be prosecuted.

So why was I allowed to buy one, if I can’t actually use it?

You are allowed to buy or sell e-scooters, and you can use them on private land (with permission).

Why aren’t private e-scooters

legal to use in public?

E-scooters are classed as powered transporters and fall within the legal definition of a motor vehicle under the Road Traffic Act 1998. This means that the same rules that apply to motor vehicles, apply to e-scooters.

This includes, but isn’t limited to: driving with a licence, driving/riding with insurance, driving/riding other than on a road. It is not currently possible to get appropriate insurance for privately owned e-scooters, meaning it is illegal to use them on the road or public spaces.

Why don’t you work with retailers so that customers know the law before buying?

We are working with retailers to explain the law. But, of course, the buying and selling of e-scooters is allowed.

Is there any way to ride an e-scooter legally?

Yes. Some areas in England, including parts of the Avon and Somerset force area are undergoing a government trial where their use is allowed (but

regulated) on public land and roads.

In Avon and Somerset, trials are being run in Somerset West (Taunton), South Somerset (Yeovil, Chard and Crewkerne) and Bristol and Bath. All trial schemes have terms of use that riders are expected to abide by.

Are e-scooters seen as more dangerous than pedal cycles?

E-scooters and pedal cycles are classified differently under the law. As Mechanically Propelled Vehicles (MPVs) or Personal Low Emission Vehicles (PLEVs), the law says e-scooters can’t be used on the road or any other public place, unless part of a government trial scheme.

Why are electric bikes legal to use, but not e-scooters?

Electrically-assisted bikes are allowed in public places – provided they have pedals to propel it, the electric motor’s power doesn’t exceed a specified limit, electrical assistance cuts out when the vehicle reaches 15.5mph, and the rider is not under 14 years old. All other electric bikes are treated the same as e-scooters.

What about mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs?

You don’t need a licence to drive a mobility scooter or

powered wheelchair, but you may have to register it. Only certain types can be driven on the road.

What happens if police stop me when I’m riding an e-scooter on a public road or land?

The scooter may be seized, and you could be liable for prosecution for driving without insurance.

What if I’m stopped riding an e-scooter and I don’t hold a driving licence?

If you don’t hold a provisional or full licence and are stopped riding an e-scooter, you could be prosecuted for driving other than in accordance than with a licence, as well as having no insurance.

I’m a parent – if my child is stopped while riding an e-scooter, would I be prosecuted?

Yes. You could be liable to prosecution for allowing a child to ride otherwise than in accordance with a licence, or with no insurance.

Are e-scooter users breaking any other laws?

There are numerous potential offences that could potentially be prosecuted, including riding carelessly or dangerously; contravening traffic signals; or for drink/drug-riding.

Yeovil restaurant closed after 20 years - but plans revealed for new venue next door!

A

POPULAR Yeovil restaurant has closed – but the people behind it plan to open a new venture right next door.

Tamburino Yeovil has been serving Italian cuisine to customers in the town for two decades, but closed the kitchen for the final time after a special new year’s event.

However, early in 2026, the people behind Tamburino are opening a new eatery – Atrium – in premises neighbouring their current home.

Atrium is described as “an exciting new Italian kitchen and bar”, with bosses saying the new venue would feature a “theatre-style open kitchen with chef’s table dining”, state-ofthe-art facilities over tow floors, and a “stylish new bar” offering signature cocktails and more.

Wincanton charity receives special award for work helping over-55s

A

SOMERSET charity that helps people over 55 find the care they need to live independent lives and remain in their own homes has been recognised with a special award.

Wincanton Cares supports people in the BA9 postcode area - including the town and surrounding areas - and aims to ensure people receive the right care for them and their needs.

Now, the group’s work has been recognised at the South West Integrated Personalised Care Awards - winning the prestigious Connecting People Award.

During the presentation event, Wincanton Cares was described as a "truly inspiring example of what community power can achieve", and a "model of community-led personalised care - a north star for what true connection looks like".

Judges identified how the work of Wincanton Cares has changed lives, helping develop how adult social care officers think about services to support older people and those with disabilities.

"Wincanton Cares began in the aftermath of the pandemic, at a time when navigating health and care felt overwhelming for many," the award citation said.

"Instead of accepting this as inevitable, a small group of local residents stepped forward with a simple belief: that the community itself could bridge the gaps.

"Built from lived experience rather than policy, Wincanton Cares offers support that is local, relational, and deeply human."

The judges praised the "extraordinary impact" the charity had prompted, with 10 volunteer befrienders providing ongoing support to around 25

Singalongs, sherry and flower arranging make for a joyful Christmas at care home!

Carol concerts from young people - and joyous new year's celebrations - were among festive highlights at Crandon Springs in Wells

ESIDENTS and staff at a Somerset care home reflected on a joyful festive season as they welcome din 2026.

Crandon Springs Care Home, in Wells, enjoyed "many wonderful moments" over the Christmas period, including making festive floral decorations with a professional florist, pamper sessions, musical performances, carol singing, cake making, gift giving, and sherry drinking.

Among the highlights was a Christmas Carol concert performed by Wells Cathedral Preparatory School pupils (Years 5 and 6), "who filled the care home with their angelic voices and festive cheer", with even smaller children from the Rockers and Rollers nursery also joining residents for a Christmas sing-along.

And for their New Year celebration, residents and family wrapped up the 2025 by enjoying a party full of fizz, singing and dancing, to tunes ranging from The Twist to Auld

Lang Syne.

Meg Cleal, general manager at Crandon Springs, said: "Thanks to everyone who helped make Christmas and New Year at Crandon Springs so memorable, including our staff who make sure our residents enjoy a full, fun, and festive experience; family and
