Swimmers brave cold Somerset waters to raise money for hospice charity

M

ORE than 100 swimmers took to the icy waters off Minehead Beach to raise money for a good county cause. Swimmers saw in 2026 with a plunge in aid of St Margaret’s Hospice Care during the annual New Year’s Day Dip. Families, friends and passers-by turned out in force to cheer on the dippers, who were enduring freezing temperatures as they braved the swim. Events manager Shauna Booker led the countdown, before dozens of eager

swimmers made their way into the water – including many donning fancy dress for their dip. Among them were a bunch of bananas, a group of reindeers who had trotted all the way from Oxford, and countless Hawaiian skirts brightening the beach. So far, the swim has raised more than £2,700, with more fundraising coming in. All funds will go directly to St Margaret’s Hospice, helping the charity continue to provide free, compassionate care to people

with life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones across Somerset. St Margaret’s thanked sponsor Mademoiselle Desserts, as well as APEX for providing essential medical support and lifeguards, Dana Fish and Chip Shop for their support, and to volunteers who gave their time to ensure the event ran safely and smoothly. “The hospice would also like to thank everyone who came along to watch, support and encourage the dippers, creating such a warm start to the year

despite the freezing temperature,” a spokesperson added. “The New Year’s Day Dip continues to be a firm favourite in the St Margaret’s Hospice events calendar, bringing people together to start the year with adrenaline, kindness and community spirit – all in support of local hospice care.” n For more information on St Margaret’s Hospice Care, or to get involved in future events, visit st-margarets-hospice.org. uk.

Man faces deportation after being jailed for Taunton park rape

M

ANOJ Chinthathira has been jailed for 12 years after admitting the rape of a woman in a Taunton park. The 29-year-old, of Wilfred Road, Taunton, was handed the sentence after pleading guilty to the attack, in Victoria Park, at between 11pm on October 10 last year and 5am the following day. He was arrested the following day (October 12) following a police appeal. On November 28, Chinthathira entered guilty pleas to two counts of rape and was remanded into custody. Today (January 8), he was sentenced at Taunton Crown Court, sitting at Worle, to a 12-year jail term for each offence, to run concurrently, after allowing a reduction for his guilty plea. His Honour Judge Stephen Climie said Chinthathira would be deported after serving 50 per cent of his sentence. Chinthathira expressed his remorse and shame, and hung his head. The court heard he had approached the woman – a stranger to him – in the street after noticing that she seemed upset. Police enquiries established

that he bought beer from a nearby shop and plied the woman, in her 30s, with alcohol, at first chatting with her in a friendly way. Nearby security cameras captured the chilling moment he told the woman he was going to rape her, and the terrified woman repeatedly begging "please don’t". Officer in the case, DC Amanda Johnson, said: "This is a disturbing case in which a man has targeted a vulnerable woman. Manoj Chinthathira saw a woman who was in distress. "He bought alcohol and took her to a secluded bench in the park. "While he at first seemed to be friendly, it seems clear his behaviour was planned and predatory. During the sustained assault she was in fear for her life. "When confronted with his crime, he initially denied it, but the evidence was so compelling he was forced to enter a guilty plea in court. "I would like to recognise the woman for resolutely supporting an investigation which has taken someone who poses a clear risk to women and girls off our streets. "I must also thank the

members of the public who helped the victim, and those who came forward with information after our initial appeal." Christine Hart, Senior Crown Advocate from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), said: "The OIC and her team conducted a thorough and sensitive investigation which included obtaining audio from nearby CCTV cameras that captured the harrowing soundtrack of this incident. I echo the comments made in relation to the courage and resilience shown by the victim.

Owners call for support as they warn bar and restaurant closure is "a very real risk"

A

LANDMARK bar and restaurant near Taunton has warned closure is “a very real risk” after trade in the autumn and over Christmas proved “far below what we rely on”. Steve and Tracey Elliott have operated The Chapel, at Cotford St Luke, since 2022, and in November last year opened The Chapel Tap, in Taunton. However, in a message to customers this week, they have warned a drop in trade over the winter has left them struggling to keep The Chapel open. “We have built a great reputation, but we now need a significant increase in local support,” they said. “The reality is that without this, closure in the short term is a very real risk. “Autumn and Christmas are normally what carry us through the winter. This year they didn’t. Trade was far below what we rely on, and we are now heading into the toughest months of the year in a very vulnerable position. “Independent pubs across the UK are under increasing pressure, and The Chapel is no exception. Changes in customer habits, the reality of running a large historic building that’s costly to heat, and the impact of the recent Government budget – including further business rate increases due from April – are all being felt. “The sums simply don’t work unless footfall rises.”

The Chapel, in Cotford St Luke, is under threat amid falling trade and rising costs, the owners said

They said they were reviewing opening hours, events, and “how we operate”. “These aren’t cutbacks by choice. They are last-ditch attempts to reduce costs and keep the doors open long enough to see if things can turn around,” the owners said. “Many in this village know what it feels like when The Chapel stands empty. A depressing sight – a dark, empty building at the centre of Cotford St Luke. None of us want to see that again, but that is the reality we are facing. “We are sharing this now

because if The Chapel matters to you, we need you. Not next month. Not in the spring. Now. "Every pint, every coffee, every meal, every booking genuinely makes a difference at this stage. “We are not giving up – but we cannot keep going without meaningful support from our customers and community. “Thank you to everyone who continues to stand with us. We hope this isn’t the beginning of the end – but it could be, unless things change.” The news comes after Somerset MP Ashley Fox

Picture: Google

(Conservative, Bridgwater) said the Government was putting pubs “under serious strain” following a visit to The Globe Inn, in North Petherton. He said: “Pubs like the Globe Inn sit at the heart of our communities. They provide jobs, support the local economy and offer a place for people to come together. “But many of our smaller pubs are under serious strain as rising costs continue to mount under this Labour government. It is important that they are not hit with additional burdens that push them closer to the edge.”

Firefighter Jamie retires after 32 years MORE than three decades of service came to an end for one Taunton firefighter this week. On January 7, Taunton Response group commander Jamie Dickenson retired after 32 years of operational service with the Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. “To mark this occasion, Jamie was presented his certificate of service and clasp from his son, Jack, who works on Taunton Green Watch, along with the rest of the Taunton response group leadership team, the rest of Green Watch Taunton and fellow colleagues past and present,” a spokesperson said. “Happy retirement Jamie from us all at Taunton.”

House burglars stole keys - and then car

B

URGLARS stole car keys, cash, a purse and bank cards from a house in Bridgwater – before making off in the occupants’ car. Police are appealing for information after the incident, at a house in Teasel Path, at around 6.20am on Wednesday, January 7. They said a driving licence was also taken in the break-in, before the raiders made off in the stolen blue Skoda Octavia – and have released CCTV images of two people they want to trace. “The two people pictured are believed to be young men, wearing black balaclavas and light-coloured tracksuits, but no further details on their descriptions have been established at this time,” an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said. “CCTV and house-to-house enquiries have been carried out, and we are in contact with the

victim.” PC Alice Rimes-Bowen, officer in the case, said: “We are aware of discussion on social media about door handles to other addresses in the Wilstock area being tried, and we would urge people to report such incidents to us, so we are aware of the scale of the issue. “We are aware of the impact

burglaries can have on people, not just in terms of the financial and sentimental terms, but also the psychological effect they can have. “We are now appealing to witnesses, those with information on the incident or those involved, and anybody who may have dashcam or doorbell footage immediately

before or after the incident, to contact us.” n Anyone who recognises the people pictured, or has information about the break-in, should contact police on 101, quoting reference 5226005091. They can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Family histories collide at Frome wedding

On Saturday, November 15, Frome Town Hall hosted the nuptials of Tom and Corina. And the day had a special family connection for Tom, whose grandparents, Terry and Sandra Wheeler, were married at the historic venue on October 30, 1965.

In 2017, Terry and Sandra returned to Frome Town Hall to take part in its grand reopening following restoration works. While Sandra sadly passed away a few years ago, Terry was in attendance on his grandson’s big day, almost exactly six decades after his own. Manure closes road! IN a real ‘only in Somerset’ moment, a busy road was closed due to a large amount of manure being spilled on the route. The B3151, near the junction with Horse Mill Lane, Somerton, was shut to vehicles at just after 10.10am on Friday (January 9) after drivers reported a “significant amount of slurry” had spilled on the Tarmac, police said. Police on the scene shut the road while it was cleared with the help of the fire service and residents. Somerset Council was also informed of the incident, police said.

Church could become dental surgery

A

FORMER Somerset church could become a dentist, if plans are approved. RPA Dental, on behalf of the Wedmore Foundation for Dentistry & Health, has applied to Somerset Council for permission to convert the former Methodist Church in Sand Road into a dental surgery. The scheme would see five surgery rooms created at the Grade II-listed building, as well as a consultation room, office, and a reception/waiting area. "All new accommodation sits entirely within the existing envelope, using lightweight, transparent and reversible construction," the application said. "Reuse of the church avoids unnecessary demolition, reduces embodied carbon, enhances longevity, and ensures the building remains in active community-serving use."

It added the hall would remain "open and spacious", while the existing non-original gallery floor would be removed, with a new floor constructed. As well as internal alterations, a 13-space car park would be created outside, including an accessible bay. "The building has stood

vacant for several years and is now showing signs of disrepair," the application concluded. "The proposals secure its long-term future through sensitive reuse and repair rather

than redevelopment, ensuring the continued relevance of this historic structure." For more details on the scheme, log on to somerset.gov. uk and search application reference 50/25/00108.

Jobs go as Burnham Shoe Zone to close later this month

Shoe Zone, in Burnham High Street, is set to close on January 18

SHOE Zone in Burnham-on-Sea will close later this month, it has been confirmed. The store, in the High Street, is one of dozens the chain is shutting amid “challenging” financial conditions and falling consumer confidence. It is understood three jobs will go in Burnham as a result of the closure. In October last year, Shoe Zone posted a fall in revenues – to £149.1 million – of 7.6% compared to the previous year. Charles Smith, chair of the brand, said the firm faced a “challenging” time, adding: “With persistent inflation, higher interest rates and reduced levels of disposable income all contributing to general negative economic and consumer sentiment in the UK.” The Burnham-on-Sea store is set to close on Sunday, January 18.

Somerset shoppers donated hundreds of gifts for children in need

Tesco staff handed gifts to Shepton Mallet Fire Station, who helped distribute them

K

IND-hearted Somerset shoppers donated more than 800 toys to children in need over Christmas. Generous souls have been thanked for their efforts as part of the Tesco Christmas Toy Donation campaign. The initiative saw donation spots opened at stores in Burnham-on-Sea, Chard, Clevedon, Langport, Minehead, Taunton, Wells, Weston-superMare, Yeovil, Shepton Mallet, Ilminster, Keynsham and Glastonbury. A total of 834 brand-new

toys handed over were then given as gifts to children who might otherwise not have received any presents from Santa at Christmas, distributed through groups across the county. Organisations including Shepton Mallet Fire Station, Combe St Nicholas Care and Share, Mums2bteens2more, Yeovil Hospital, King Edward Road Nursery, South West Children’s Hospital, and the Avon Fire & Rescue Service helped distribute the gifts across the county.

A spokesperson for Tesco stores in Somerset said: “This year’s toy donation campaign gave customers a fantastic opportunity to support local families and ensure children in our community had something to open on Christmas Day. “We are so grateful to our customers who donated what they could to help bring some festive joy to local families over Christmas.” Claire De Silva, head of communities at the supermarket chain, added: “We really can’t thank our customers enough for

their kind contributions to our Toy Donation campaign. “Throughout the year our stores give support to children and their community, and without fail local people support us in our efforts. “So once again we are grateful to the people of Somerset for showing that the magic of Christmas is very much alive and well. "They have made a lot of children very happy at a time of year that can be difficult for some families, so thank you so much again for your support.”

Wincanton Cinema opening date confirmed WINCANTON will welcome a new cinema in February, it has been confirmed. The new venue, at an Art Deco building in South Street which was formerly home to a church and a bingo hall, pictured, will welcome movie goers from February 13, according to operator S&B Cinemas. The firm – which also runs cinemas in Frome, Burnham and Minehead – starting renovating the Wincanton venue in May last year, and had initially hoped to be open before the end of 2025. However, the new opening date has been confirmed by owner, Pat Scott, initially with two screens operating.

Your Somerset Leveller got a look inside the building as work began, with Mr Scott saying he believed “in these smaller-town cinemas”. “I believe we’ve got it right,” he said. “The theatres that are doing well are the ones that look after the customer – and that is what we do.” The project is being overseen by builder John and architect Phil, as well as Pat’s wife, Beryl, and their faithful dog Janie.

New college block plans unveiled

How the new Block A at Strode College could look, if plans are approved

A

HUGE new block – including an ‘indoor street’, a new training kitchen, catering facilities and a refectory – could be built at Strode College in Street. Plans have been submitted for the redevelopment of Black A at the facility, which would create a new building of more than 4,000 sq ft. The scheme has been handed to Somerset Council for consideration by the Department for Education, Willmott Dixon and Strode College and comes after the college was granted funding for improvements by the government to construct a new Black A building off Church Street. Last year, Strode College

became part of the new University Centre Somerset College Group (UCS College Group), merging with Bridgwater & Taunton College. Planning was already underway on the new building, with the application outlining the development. It said: “A new purposedesigned teaching and dining building replaces the former blocks, creating clearer movement patterns, improved passive supervision, and a more legible sequence of external spaces. “The external environment is reorganised into a series of social, dining and sensory spaces that support the curriculum and the operational

model of the college. “A refurbished SEN garden provides a sheltered, calm setting with new seating, allotment beds and a canopy.” The main site access would be from Church Street, with secure bicycle parking included. A ‘student street’ – an internal double-height walkway – aims to create a “warm and inviting atmosphere for students, staff and visitors alike”, the plans said. An informal café-style dining area would also be part of the new block, with links to external dining areas and “outdoor social and nature areas”. Internally, the proposed new Block A includes a Learning

Resource Centre, a training restaurant and classrooms. Also part of the plans is a visual connection of the entrance to the new building to the entrance of Strode Theatre, with “the potential for future physical connection between the Block A lobby and theatre bar area”. The plans also outline plans for “out-of-hours community access to the training restaurant and bar area”, as well as a drama classroom that could act as a ‘greenroom’ space during community theatre productions. n For more details, and to comment on the plans, log on to somerset.gov.uk and search application reference 2025/2302/FUL.

RAFFIC lights on a busy Burnham-on-Sea street are set to be replaced. Somerset Council has confirmed the lights serving the pedestrian entrance to Tesco, in Love Lane, will be renewed as they are at the end of their 30-year lifespan. The work, part of a countywide initiative to replace traffic signals, was set to get underway on Monday (January 12) and finish in February - with temporary lights set to be installed in the meantime. "There is likely to be congestion at peak times and people are advised to plan

The council’s lead member for transport and waste services, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said: "This is about replacing end of life equipment and ensuring the signals are fit for purpose for the next 30 years. "We are aware there will be disruption at peak traffic times. The team will be working hard to minimise this."

Family wants permission for full cricket nets to practice shots in their back garden!

A

SOMERSET household is taking cricket practice very seriously - planning to install nets in their back garden. Stead & Co Architects, on behalf of Vijay Bhatti, have submitted a planning application for 3.6 metre-high nets in the back garden of a property at The Barns, in Compton Dundon. The plans described the installation as a "modest, domestic-scale cricket practice facility within the private garden" of the home, which is in a "small residential cluster" of modern homes. The nets would run alongside a "tall rendered boundary wall" separating the property from neighbours, the application said. "This wall, along with the building mass of the adjacent dwelling, forms a substantial

and permanent visual screen," it said. The nets would be installed over an already-fitted strip of artificial turf which acts as a wicket for practice. "The recently-installed Astroturf practice strip lies unobtrusively within the garden and does not affect the enjoyment or operation of neighbouring properties," the application added. "The space continues to be used in a typical domestic manner, including informal outdoor recreation. "No part of the site is used for commercial, communal or intensified activity, and the existing character of the garden reflects a quiet, private residential setting. "The proposed use remains entirely domestic. The cricket practice net is intended solely for the applicant’s family, providing a safe and controlled environment for children to practise cricket. "The enclosed structure ensures cricket balls are fully contained, preventing any potential nuisance or risk to

neighbouring properties." There would be no lighting, evening use, or amplified sound, the plans said, with all activity taking place during "ordinary daytime hours". The plans said the nets would "minimise visual impact", with steel poles "finished in a forest-green colour that blends naturally with surrounding planting and landscaping". "The netting is formed of fine black mesh, which is nonreflective and visually recessive, allowing it to fade into the shadow line of the existing boundary wall," the plans outlined. "This ensures the structure does not appear bulky or intrusive, even at close range." "The proposal does not alter the residential use of the site, nor does it introduce any activity beyond what would normally be expected in domestic gardens across the area," the appliction added. n For more details, and to comment on the plans, see somerset.gov.uk, application reference 25/03072/HOU.

News Analysis

Your council tax is set to rise - but why? And is it the same everywhere?

S

OMERSET residents are facing another whopping increase in council tax. It is no secret the county authority - formerly Somerset County Council and from 2023, Somerset Council - is in financial dire straits. Rising costs of adult and children's social care, combined with inflation and more, have seen bills paid by our council skyrocket. That, combined with falling money from central government, has led to the current situation, as we've spoken about before. Now, as eyes turn towards setting Somerset Council's 2026/27 budget, council tax rises are back on the agenda. As the authority looks to plug a huge funding shortfall - some £73 million - the Liberal Democrat administration is looking at proposing an increase that would, in total, see bills rise by almost 11%. There's no doubt, as households continue to battle a cost-of-living crisis, any increase will not go down well - particularly as it comes hot on the heels of last year's 7.5% rise. Opposition members have already slated the idea, with Cllr Diogo Rodrigues (Con, Bridgwater East & Bawdrip) saying the council is treating

Somerset families as "a bottomless source of cash to cover poor decision-making". He said: "(The administration has) confirmed they have asked Government for permission to raise Council Tax by 5.9% on top of the existing 4.99% limit, an increase of almost 11% in a single year. "This comes after last year’s 7.5% council tax rise, when the same administration originally sought an increase of more than 20%. Time and again, Somerset residents are being asked to pay the price for this council’s failures. "While declaring a financial emergency, the Liberal Democrats have spent over £33 million on agency staff while cutting 555 job posts, are splashing £20m on consultants to tell them how to save money, are spending £3m with consultants to tell them how much to pay staff, have lost around £100m through rushed asset sales, and signed off the disastrous Life Factory project in Glastonbury where millions of pounds were handed over without proper checks and balances. It's Somerset residents that pay the price, including the thousands of disabled households who are now around £400 a year worse off following cuts this council made to their

Council Tax Support. "Somerset families are already under pressure from rising bills and the cost of living, and they are being treated as a bottomless source of cash to cover poor decisionmaking at Liberal Democrat-run County Hall." In response, leader of the council, Cllr Bill Revans (Lib Dem, North Petherton), pointed to the rising costs and the 'unfair' council tax system. "We’ve been saying for some time that council tax is not a fair system for funding essential demand-led services like social care," he said. "Despite last year’s increase, Somerset residents still pay less council tax than the unitary average, and less than neighbouring councils like Dorset, Cornwall, Devon and Wiltshire, due to historic decisions by legacy councils to freeze council tax in Somerset between 2010 and 2016. This means we have less money to fund essential services. "Our finances remain fragile and we are in discussions with the Government around further Exceptional Financial Support for this year. "If the Government were to agree to a 5.9% increase above the 4.99% cap, this would bring Somerset Council in line with the Government’s figure of

£2,060 for a Band D property which they use when calculating grant funding. "No formal requests or firm decisions have been made – any potential increases will be discussed and agreed by councillors as part of budget setting in February. "We continue to lobby on behalf of Somerset residents and urge Government to accelerate their long-promised plans for reform of council tax to create fairer funding for local government." In his comment, Cllr Revans made some points we thought we'd look at. We have touched on them before, but the fresh round of increases means it's worth another look... Cllr Revans said "Somerset residents still pay less council tax than the unitary average" even after the 7.5% increase last year. Government figures show the average Band D council tax rate set by unitary authorities in England for 2025/26, not including other precepts such as parishes, police and fire, was around £1,913. In Somerset, according to the council's own analysis, the council precept alone was £1,857.61, which also includes a £14.65 charge for the Somerset Rivers Authority,

The Somerset Leveller, January 14, 2026

News Analysis which others don't have, so you could even go a bit lower, to around £1,840. So, Somerset does sit someway below the unitary average. But that doesn't tell the whole story, of course, because Somerset is - relatively - a pretty poor county. In April last year, data from the Office for National Statistics showed the median gross weekly wage for full-time employees in the county was £708. For comparison, that rises to £716 in North Somerset, £840 in South Gloucestershire, and £728 in the Wiltshire unitary area. Comparing the Band D rates with those higher-earning neighbours, we find: n Somerset: £708, £1,840 n North Somerset: £716, £1,793.75 n South Glos: £840, £1,931.33 n Wiltshire: £728, £1,886.99 n Dorset: £709, £2,101.05 Looking at those numbers, Somerset does indeed pay less than many neighbours. We are poorer, but we do pay less. Again, that doesn't necessarily make us feel any better when we're all struggling to keep the lights on and food on the table, but it is a basic truth we should consider, all things being equal. Another thing Cllr Revans highlights is a series of "historic decisions by legacy councils to freeze council tax in Somerset between 2010-2016". Now, this is somewhat complicated, because as we all know, prior to 2023, there were five councils in the county Mendip, Sedgemoor, Somerset West and Taunton, and South Somerset districts, as well as Somerset County Council. Post-2023, we have had a single unitary authority, Somerset Council. For the purposes of this analysis, we will simply look at Somerset Council as compared to Somerset County Council, as that was the overarching authority. Cllr Revans is quite right - data shows that from 2010/11, up to and including 2015/16, Somerset County Council did

not increase its precept (charge) at all. And councillors made a big song and dance about it too, as you would expect (I can remember the press releases touting the decision). But whatever the rights or wrongs of those freezes, over those six years, people in Somerset got used to paying a certain amount of council tax, even allowing for some increases from parish and district councils, but more on that in a bit. Now, after a pandemic, a war in Ukraine, a surge in social care costs and rising inflation, that amount is simply not enough. So things have had to increase. And it feels like a lot. Cllr Revans argues this would not have been quite so drastic had the county council increased council tax - even by a bit - in those six years. And he has a point. It is also worth considering the impact of creating a unitary authority in 2023. For example, during the six years of zero increases from the county council, the districts were able to increase their precepts (their share of the council tax bill). And some did, regularly. Sedgemoor District Council, for example, increased its share of the council tax by 3.4% in 2013/14, while South Somerset District Council increased its share by 2% in 2010/11. The thing is, these increases were relatively small, when compared to the amount charged by the larger county council. So when everything comes together - as it did in 2023 - Somerset Council has to increase to cover every area, including its own, and people feel that a lot more. So who was to blame? Well, Cllr Revans clearly wants us to infer previous Conservative administrations at Somerset County Council. So let's check that. The Liberal Democrats controlled Somerset County Council after elections in 2005. However, they lost control to

somersetleveller.co.uk the Conservatives in 2009, who retained control until 2022, when the Liberal Democrats won by a landslide in the last election of Somerset County Councillors. Cllr Revans is correct in what he says - the Conservative administrations at Somerset County Council made the decision not to increase its share of the council tax from 2010/11 until 2015/16. They did increase council tax by 5.3% in 2016/17, by 6% in 2018/19, and 4% in 2020/21, for example, when then-leader Cllr David Fothergill - was himself decrying the local authority funding system. In 2019, Cllr Fothergill said the authority had been battling to avoid bankruptcy amid government spending cuts and the rising demand of social care - exactly the same things being said by Cllr Revans now. Cllr Fothergill was among dozens of council leaders who, in 2019, signed a letter calling on the Conservative Government to commit to "fair funding for our underfunded and overburdened councils". Sound familiar? Cllr Revans says this has not happened to anything like the required degree to help authorities like Somerset make ends meet. Again in 2019, Cllr Fothergill said the rising costs of social care were a "time bomb" that was "ticking and it's getting louder". In recent years it seems, that bomb has gone off. And it's not just here. Councils across the country are facing exactly the same pressures. For example, Reform UK took over the running of Derbyshire County Council at last year - but despite the party's pre-election claims of millions being available in savings, the administration is proposing a 5% increase in council tax for 2026/27 to plug a £38m funding gap. And Reform-led Staffordshire County Council is proposing a 3.99% increase in council tax, with the Conservative opposition leader

saying the increase was a repudiation of Reform's claims of "wasteful spending", and that "they have found no waste and this budget is largely a roll-over of the previous plans set by the Conservatives". And Reform councillor for efficiency in Derbyshire, Cllr John Lawson, said something which sounds familiar: "The pressures in some areas, especially in children's social care, are incredibly challenging, but careful planning across the council as a whole means we are looking to the future with confidence." In North Somerset, the exact same problems have occurred. Leader Mike Bell has written to the Prime Minister calling for changes to the funding formula, as our near neighbours claim they will lose around £18m under the new calculations. Again, adult and children's social care are at the forefront of the funding crisis, along with 'low' council tax rates - which will now need to be increased. So, whatever your political persuasion, some things remain clear - the "time bomb" the Conservatives warned about has gone off, in the hands of a Liberal Democrat administration in Somerset, with similar explosions felt at Reform-, Lib Dem- and Conservative-led councils elsewhere. Being unable to balance the books is not party political, it would seem, no matter what any politician wants you to think. Sure, we can agree over how money is spent here and there - more on potholes, less on leisure centres, that sort of thing, but the basic fact remains - councils in England, of all colours and none, are struggling to balance their books. But that doesn't help us, the resident, as we are asked to do more and more. We - and our councils - need help from somewhere, and that can and should come from the top. But that is for another time... PAUL JONES Editor in Chief

Business break-in

The Little Farm Shed opened at 10 Market Place before moving to number nine - but has now sadly closed

Rising costs, reduced footfall and supermarket rivals prompt farm shop closure decision

A

FARM shop founded by two school girls delivering eggs to friends and family has closed due to “rising costs, reduced footfall, and an eerily quiet December”. The Little Farm Shed, in Shepton Mallet, was established in 2023 after the efforts of friends Laurel and Rosie, who used produce from their grandfather’s farm to create veg boxes in a bid to save money for the Glastonbury Festival. Having developed into a fully-fledged operation run by the Barnes family, the venture landed a free, six-month tenancy at 10 Market Place thanks to the Interim Spaces charity, offering fruit and vegetables to residents, including a home delivery service. Following that rental, they moved next door – to 9 Market Place.

However, the pair have now announced they will not re-open following a post-Christmas break. “We’re sad to announce that we have made the decision not to re-open The Little Farm Shed after our break,” the ‘Little Farm Shed Family’ said. “Rising costs, reduced footfall, and an eerily quiet December compared to previous years have made things increasingly difficult to predict. “Supermarkets selling vegetables for pennies, alongside an increase in free alternatives, have had a huge impact.” They said they had hoped December would mean they could carry on through the quieter months of 2026, but “given the current financial climate, we felt it was best not to move forward with our planned renovations”. They went on: “Nearly three

years of 3am starts, late nights, and long cold days in the shop have taken their toll. Our children have spent every school holiday and weekend there, and as a family we’ve decided it’s no longer something we feel we can continue. “We’ve made lifelong friends through The Little Farm Shed, and we truly appreciate every single one of you who popped in for a chat, kept us company on those long cold mornings, or lent a hand when we really needed it.” However, they said the business would continue “quietly behind the scenes while we tidy up loose ends”. “Thank you to those who supported us week in and week out, it has meant more to us than we can say,” they added. “Please continue supporting Shepton’s independent cafés, bars, restaurants, shops, and the Friday market. Cars destroyed

TWO cars caught fire in Wells in the early hours of this morning – with the blaze damaging a nearby property after spreading. Firefighters from the city were sent to the scene at just before 3.45am after “multiple reports” of a blaze. “Upon arrival, the incident commander confirmed that two cars were well alight and also confirmed that the fire had spread to a nearby property with some minor damage,” a Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said. Crews used two breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, and a thermal image camera to tackle the fire, they added. “Both vehicles were completely destroyed by fire. The cause is unknown at this time,” the spokesperson said.

Bridgwater-based Fabric tech firm sold

B

RIDGWATER-based fabric-tech firm Nonwovenn has been

sold. The company has been acquired by CorpAcq, an Altrincham-based business acquisitions compounder backed by investment firm, TDR Capital. Founded in 2003 by current chair David Lamb, Nonwovenn manufactures and supplies bespoke technical fabrics for niche markets, including the medical, military and energy sectors. Following an initial multimillion-pound investment in 2016, investor BGF supported the business through a period of significant growth, and has now sold the firm. Turnover at Nonwovenn has increased from £19m in 2016 to £46 million in 2025, with 19 consecutive years of profit. Recently, it invested £1.5 million in research and

development to enhance its CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) protective solutions. Mr Lamb, chair, said: “We’re proud to have delivered such consistent growth and strong profitability over two decades, while remaining committed to maintaining the highest quality and customer satisfaction across our product lines. "Partnering with BGF has been instrumental in maximising our potential – enabling us to strengthen

innovation, diversify product lines and expand internationally. We’re excited to build on these strong foundations in our next phase of growth as part of CorpAcq." This exit was led for BGF by Paul Oldham and supported by Louis Hall from BGF’s Bristol team, with Alantra providing CF advice to the Nonwovenn shareholders. Mr Oldham said: "Nonwovenn has gone from strength to strength since our initial investment in 2016,

reflected in the outstanding returns delivered for BGF. "This impressive management team has built a loyal customer base by providing consistently high levels of service and product development. Our nine-year partnership with the business has been hugely enjoyable and successful and I look forward to seeing how the team builds on their success with the backing of CorpAcq." Stuart Kissen, head of acquisitions at CorpAcq, added: "Nonwovenn is an outstanding business with a leading market position, strong growth prospects and a highly experienced management team. "We see significant opportunity in the fabric technology space and are looking forward to establishing a long-term partnership with David and his team as Nonwovenn enters the next stage of its development."

New look Kia Stonic goes on sale

A

CCORDING to myth, everything King Midas touched turned to pure gold. Whether or not the Midas of legend was based on a real person is open to debate, but the gold part is most definitely an invention of human imagination. It must have been invented because Midas appears to be a car designer rather than a jeweller, and their golden touch has recently been applied to the brand-new Kia Stonic. The latest launch in a growing catalogue of success stories for the Korean carmaker, the new Kia Stonic is a stylish compact crossover, and the most recent example of how Kia is bringing premium design and technology to the mainstream family car segment. Featuring a bold new look, advanced technology, and updated powertrain options, the new Kia Stonic represents a major overhaul of the popular urban crossover. This significant update sees the Stonic receive a major exterior and interior redesign, bringing it in line with Kia’s latest electric and petrol models, as well as introducing new tech to the small car segment. A new front end introduces Kia’s Star Map Signature

Lighting and new front and lower grilles, and an updated bumper design. The redesigned rear also features a new bumper alongside a new tailgate layout, taillight signature, and an updated skid plate. These changes are complemented by new wheel options across the range, including 16-inch and 17-inch alloys. The Kia Stonic’s interior has received the same treatment too. A brand-new feature is the panoramic dual display layout with two high-resolution screens merging infotainment and vehicle information into one clear and intuitive display. Further enhancements, such as USB-C fast charging ports, wireless smartphone charging, and ambient lighting, provide

you with a more refined in-car experience. The cabin also introduces new two-spoke and three-spoke steering wheel designs, a re-sculpted gear knob and centre console, and an updated dashboard design. Available in three different trim specifications, the new Kia Stonic promises to give you a generous range of design and technology features, even from the entry level ‘Pure’ trim. Standard equipment across the entire Stonic line-up includes, a 12.3-inch navigation screen, smartphone connectivity, six-speaker audio system, rear parking sensors and reversing camera, cruise control, handy roof rails for extra load capacity, and a whole suite of Kia’s latest safety

systems. On top of that (and much more), ‘Pure’ models also add 16-inch alloys, front fog lights, and manual air conditioning to that list. A step up from the entrylevel trim, the new Stonic ‘GT-Line’ features a sportier look overall and brings with it the addition of 17-inch alloy wheels, LED lights front and rear, privacy glass, rain sensing wipers, and automatic climate control. Range-topping ‘GT-Line S’ models go even further, expanding the equipment list to include a sunroof, heated front seats, keyless entry, customisable ambient lighting, extra USB-C ports and a wireless phone charger, front parking sensors, adaptive cruise control with stop/start, and a larger 12.3-inch driver display screen. In terms of powertrain options, Kia is fully embracing electrification across its entire model range. At the same time, it recognises that not everyone is ready – or able – to opt for an electric car, so a traditional internal combustion engine remains an option in the new Stonic. To keep the decision-making experience simple, the Kia Stonic is available with a single,

somersetleveller.co.uk 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine across the line-up. Sending a peak power of 98bhp to the front wheels, it enables the new Stonic to accelerate from 0-62mph in around 11 seconds, and on to a top speed of 111mph. Hardly exhilarating numbers, but that’s not really the point. If you opt for a ‘GT-Line’ or ‘GT-Line S’ you will grab yourself a bit more performance from the addition of 48V mild hybrid technology. Coupled with a slightly tuned version of the engine for a bit more power, the boost from the mild hybrid system shaves a little time off the acceleration and adds a couple of mph to the top speed, but the main benefit will inevitably come in the form of improved efficiency rather than minor increases in performance. ‘Pure’ and ‘GT-Line’ variants will be fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, with an option to upgrade to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Range-topping ‘GT-Line S’ models feature the seven-speed automatic as standard. With each variant boasting a wide range of features, Kia has made choosing your new Kia Stonic as simple and straightforward as possible. Once you’ve specified your trim level and gearbox preference, the only optional extra you’ll really need to consider involves either sticking with the standard White Pearl colour, or spending an extra £600 on upgrading to one of the premium paint

31

finishes. Not only is the new Kia Stonic quite stylish and wellequipped, but it also adds the extra incentive of doing everything listed above for significantly less than you might expect. If you order the entry-level ‘Pure’ with the standard white paint, you’ll drive away in a brand-new Kia Stonic for the grand total of £21,845. Even if you choose the range-topping ‘GT-Line S’ with one of the premium paint finishes, you’ll still be looking at a price tag that falls comfortably below £30k. Combining practicality, affordability, and comfort with its refreshed design, advanced connectivity, and mild-hybrid powertrains, the new Kia Stonic has been designed to lead the way for compact crossovers. And leading the way is something Kia is becoming very good at.

Why leaving your car while de-icing could cost you... WE’VE all been there – it’s a cold, cold morning, you’re running late for work or school, and the windscreen is frozen solid. You run back into the house, grab the boiling-hot kettle and use it to clear your view in seconds. However, new research has revealed how motorists are putting their vehicle at risk of damage by using the age-old technique of pouring boiling water on windows to de-ice them. The tactic, according to experts, causes a sharp change in temperature on the surface of the glass which can cause cracks, chips, or even completely shatter the windscreen. A new survey by online auction site eBay said almost one in five UK motorists (19%) admit to using the kettle technique to clear their windscreen on an icy morning, while almost half might be damaging their vehicles with unconventional methods of defrosting. As well as the kettle users, around 30% of drivers said they rely on their windscreen wipers to scrape away ice, which can put unnecessary strain on the wiper motor and tear or blunt the rubber blades. The survey also revealed that a significant proportion of drivers are taking risks before they even set off, with around 18% of drivers admitting they are comfortable leaving their engine running to warm up and defrost the car, while 15% said they would walk away and carry out other tasks while the vehicle is left idling and unattended. As well as increasing the risk of theft, leaving a running vehicle unattended is illegal, in breach of Rule 123 of the Highway Code. Drivers caught doing it could face a fine. Abir Tewari, UK Director of parts and accessories at eBay, said: “Following the first cold snap of the season, we’re seeing motorists use a range of methods to clear their windscreens – some more effective and safer than others. “It is vital drivers prepare their vehicles properly for challenging winter conditions.”

August, reduce by about a half, the long, waving shoots that appear as side shoots along the main stem. These will be the shoots to cut back next January. Japanese acers have a propensity to bleed when they are cut back while the sap is rising. January is definitely a dormant time when the sap definitely does not run, so trim the stalks that have gone black and died back. If you need to shape the shrub, prune it back

now to outward facing buds. Remove any stalks that are crossing or growing into the middle of the plant, thus forming an open basket-shape for the air to circulate. Then gather up the prunings and pop them in the compost bin, and head indoors as the light fades. The days are short, but very soon they will noticeably get longer. To paraphrase the Bard, ‘winter has all too short a date’.

'Justice depends on protecting trial by jury'

I

N Parliament recently, I voted against Government proposals to restrict the right to trial by jury. I did so because I believe this right is fundamental to our system of justice and should not be weakened as a shortcut for fixing deeper problems. Trial by jury is an ancient right in England and the very essence of our criminal justice system. Combined with the Government proposals for digital ID, it reveals a very authoritarian attitude. The Government argues that these proposals are needed to deal with the growing backlog in the Crown Courts. There is no denying that there is a backlog. Victims are waiting too long for justice, defendants are left in limbo, and confidence in the system is being eroded. We know that this impacts us here in Somerset, where cases can take too long come to court,

by ASHLEY FOX

Conservative MP for Bridgwater

adding stress and uncertainty for everyone involved. But the backlog was not caused by trial by jury, and it will not be cured by removing it. In our debate, I challenged the Lord Chancellor to explain why abolishing jury trials for cases likely to receive a sentence of three years or less is the right solution. If this policy is genuinely based on evidence, then that evidence should be published. So far, it has not been. What we know, from the Government’s own figures, is that in the last two years the Ministry of Justice, which includes the court service, lost the highest number of days per member of staff in sickness and

absence in the whole of Whitehall, at an average of 10.7 days of sickness - more than two working weeks for every member of staff. That is more than 30% higher than the civil service average and over twice the UK average if the private sector is included. Were the Lord Chancellor to focus his efforts on improving the efficiency of his own Department, he might start to see the system as a whole improve. With approximately 16,400 staff in the court service, simply reducing the rate of absences to the civil service average would free up nearly 50,000 working days. That would help cut the backlog without undermining the principle of a fair trial.

We know that this Government have a habit of making bad decisions, getting ambitious backbenchers to defend them for a few months and sending a hapless junior Minister out to face the media while the Secretary of State hides in his office, only at the last minute to realise what a disaster the plans are before executing a U-turn that comes far too late for them to gain any credit. We have seen that on winter fuel, welfare reform, the grooming gangs inquiry, the two-child benefit cap and, most recently, the family farm and family business tax. Might they do so again? Fixing the criminal justice system matters, but it must be done by improving efficiency and supporting staff, not by rolling back fundamental rights. If we lose sight of that, we risk damaging not just the justice system, but the trust that underpins it.

MP launches petition over hospitality rates

S

OMERSET MP Rachel Gilmour (Lib Dem, Tiverton & Minehead) has launched a petition calling on the Government to re-evaluate their “disastrous decision” to remove business rate relief for hospitality businesses from April. In last year’s Budget, the Chancellor announced business rate relief would be removed in its entirety from this year, having previously been reduced from 75% to 40% during the Covid pandemic. Mrs Gilmour said she has since heard from small and medium-sized business owners across her constituency who are finding it incredibly difficult to continue operating - including The Chapel, at Cotford St Luke (see page 6), which has announced it needs a “significant increase in local support” to remain open,

referencing “further business rate increases due from April” as one of their challenges. The MP has now launched a campaign calling on the Government to re-evaluate their decision and act to protect and save businesses across Tiverton and Minehead. "Many of our local pubs, restaurants, cafes, hotels and entertainment venues here in Tiverton and Minehead are already struggling with spiralling costs," she said. "Removing the current relief from April 2026 will mean their business rates will surge by 40% or more. "Our small and mediumsized businesses don’t just contribute to our national economy – they create jobs, support local high streets, and bring our communities together. These businesses are the backbone of our rural

communities. "Unfortunately, the current trend means some businesses will be forced to close, and vital rural services will be lost. The Government must act to protect our high streets by amending these damaging changes. "Please sign my petition, and

let’s show the Government that more must be done to protect our much-loved local businesses." n The petition is online at www.rachelgilmour.org.uk/ campaigns/business-ratesrelief-for-hospitality.

Youngsters get school rocking with concert!

P

UPILS, parents and staff got to rock out during a special school concert. Young rockers at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, performed for families at a Rocksteady concert, the culmination of a term of weekly band sessions. The show highlighted the progress pupils have made through the Rocksteady programme, which teaches primary-age children to play instruments and make music together. Sessions take place during the school day, with pupils learning instruments such as electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, drums and vocals. Rather than learning individually, pupils rehearse in small groups, developing skills in rhythm and performance alongside teamwork, listening

and confidence, led by Rocksteady band leader Angus Stewart. Parents fund the weekly lessons, and the concerts give families the opportunity to see pupils’ progress and enjoy their performances. Ellen Croker, headteacher at St Benedict's, said: "The concert was fantastic. It was brilliant to see our pupils sharing their love of music and growing in confidence on stage. "Experiences like this help them enjoy music, work together and take pride in what they can achieve." Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, added: "It’s wonderful to see the children at St Benedict’s enjoying music, building confidence, and working together. Rocksteady gives them a chance to shine and develop skills that will stay with them for life."

Donations helping Somerset elderly stay warm this winter

N APPEAL to help 1,000 older people stay warm this winter has reached the halfway point to its £100,000 target. The Surviving Winter Appeal, organised by the Somerset Community Foundation (SCF), is calling on people and businesses to help older people living in fuel poverty to stay warm, safe and well during the coldest months. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, the SCF said the fundraiser has so far raised £50,000, which is providing grants to cover heating costs, support to make homes more energy efficient, and activities that reduce isolation and improve wellbeing for older people. "Around 10,000 older people in Somerset are living in fuel poverty, with many facing stark choices between heating and eating," said Justin Sargent, chief executive at SCF. "The support raised so far is already making a difference, but with the coldest months of the year ahead, there’s still huge demand for our support – particularly grants to help with fuel bills. "While changes to the Winter Fuel Payment have helped, we

know the poorest older people in the county are still struggling. Many live alone, with health conditions or in poor-quality housing, which makes winter even tougher." With more than 15 years' experience running the Surviving Winter Appeal, SCF works alongside partners to provide targeted support for people on low incomes, those living alone, or those with health conditions that make cold weather particularly risky. Carol, 64, has a severe medical condition that causes her chronic pain and limits her mobility and was among those supported last year. "My condition is terrible all year round, but worse in winter," she said. "I’m at home all day and it gets really, really cold. You need heat, you need to be able to dry clothes on the radiators and get on with your life. But I had to have the heating off in the daytime. "I just could not have it on because it cost too much money. It was so cold, you cannot imagine." n People can still support the Surviving Winter Appeal via somersetcf.org.uk/winter, or by calling 01749 344949.
