Toddler, two, slept through effort to free her from locked car!

ATODDLER locked in a vehicle in a Taunton car park was rescued by firefighters – and slept through the entire ordeal.

The incident, in the Crescent Car Park, unfolded on Thursday, July 22, when firefighters responded to a call reporting a two-year-old was in her car seat inside the locked vehicle.

The doors had automatically locked as her dad got out of the car.

Firefighters from Taunton attended and used small tools to gain entry to the car, where the youngster was safely snoozing –with her dolly.

“The toddler was unaware of the drama that unfolded around her and she slept through it,” a fire service spokesperson added.

School worker loses job over "vile" remarks

ALEARNING support worker who sparked controversy with a series of remarks over increasing numbers of “Black and Asian children” at the Somerset school where she worked “will not be returning to work”.

Right-wing campaigner Brenda Heal – known online as Brenda Rose – has lost her job at Crispin School Academy, in Street, after making comments to an anti-illegal immigration demonstration in Taunton on July 25.

With a megaphone, she told a crowd of protestors: “I work in a school, 1,100 kids. Up until 18 months ago we only had between three and four in every 1,000 kids (who were) Black or Asian children. We have now anywhere between 75 and 80 of them. In 18 months. So it’s on its way.”

She did not mention the children’s immigration status, only the fact they are “Black and Asian”, and went on to tell protestors, “we have to stand and fight against this”.

Later, Ms Heal urged demonstrators not to use Turkish barbers, accusing the businesses of crimes, provoking some pushback from those

assembled.

Video of her remarks was posted on social media, provoking a fierce backlash from anti-racism groups and many residents.

Members of the UK AntiFascists group called Ms Rose/ Heal a “vile racist”, and added: “Brenda, who works in a local school, can be heard complaining about the amount of Black and Asian children at the school. God forbid a child of colour wants an education. We might as well open up the plantations.”

A number of people contacted the school to raise concerns about her remarks.

In response, the Wessex Learning Trust, which runs the school, said "internal processes" were underway and a day later confirmed Ms Heal would not

be returning to work.

“We are proud to serve a diverse and inclusive community, and we firmly believe that the diversity of our pupils, staff and wider community is one of the school’s and Trust’s greatest strengths,” a spokesperson said.

“We are committed to ensuring that everyone is treated with dignity, respect and fairness, regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity or background.

“We would like to thank those members of our community who have taken the time to bring this material to our attention. We can confirm that the member of staff will not be returning to work at Crispin School or the Wessex Learning Trust in September.

“Due to confidentiality, we

are unable to comment further on matters relating to individual members of staff. May we reassure you that have we have followed internal processes and sought guidance from the relevant authorities.

“The Wessex Learning Trust and Crispin School will continue to work with organisations that promote the education of cultural diversity for the benefit or our learners, staff and community.”

Ms Heal’s remarks sparked backlash across the country, including from MP Sarah Dyke (Lib Dem, Glastonbury & Somerton), whose constituency includes Street.

“I am horrified by the video shared on social media of a learning support staff member at Crispin School making derogatory comments about ethnic minority students at a far-right rally in Taunton,” the MP said.

The Taunton demonstration was attended by around 100 immigration protestors, who were met by 250 counter protestors in the town centre.

Avon & Somerset Police said around 100 officers were on duty for the gathering, with no arrests made.

Man tried to drive drunk with child in car

A FROME man who abused workers at a Wiltshire service station before attempting to drive off drunk – with a child in the car – has been jailed.

Michal Korgul, of Wyville Road, Frome, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, two counts of common assault, assault by beating, and failing to provide a specimen of breath. He was handed a 35-week prison sentence when he appeared at Salisbury Magistrates Court on July 23. The 39-year-old was also disqualified from driving for 40 months and must pay £200 compensation to his victims.

The charges came after, at shortly before 10pm on July 21, police were called to Burger King at Grenada Services, Warminster, where Korgul was intoxicated and being abusive towards staff by throwing items and spitting at them.

Officers attended and spotted Korgul, right, driving a vehicle in the car park, with a child inside.

Korgul was clearly intoxicated and alcohol was located inside the car.

He refused a breath test and was arrested. The child was returned home.

After the sentencing, PC

George Malin-Davis of Wiltshire Police, said: “On arrival at the scene, officers found Korgul was visibly intoxicated, his speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet. He was clearly in no fit state to be behind the wheel of a car, let alone in the company of a child.

“It does not bear thinking about what could have happened had police not been alerted and intervened.

“I’d like to thank the victims and witnesses involved for their swift courage, resilience, and flexibility in working with us to gain evidence and ensure Korgul was charged and put before the courts immediately.

“I am pleased that on this occasion; a custodial sentence has been given. Korgul targeted young female staff members who were just trying to do their job. His punishment reflects his total disregard for the law.”

Children arrested over Bridgwater disorder

THREE children – aged 12 and 13 – have been arrested in connection with anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and disorder in Bridgwater.

Police said the incident unfolded after reports of disturbances in the Eastover area on Sunday (July 26).

“Following a 999 call, officers attended the Eastover area of Bridgwater where a shop door had shattered,” an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said.

“Initial enquiries indicated that three people, all aged under 18, were involved.

“It was reported that two boys had entered the shop where a number of items were damaged and alcohol stolen. A drink can was then thrown at a shop worker, and the glass door at the premises was broken.”

They said Somerset Council CCTV operators and the police drone team worked together to trace suspects, with officers from the West Somerset Patrol Team 2 locating two boys, aged

12 and 13, who were arrested on suspicion of offences including burglary, criminal damage and assault.

A 12-year-old girl was also arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon. They have since been released on conditional police bail.

Patrol Inspector Sam Griffiths said: “Local businesses should be able to operate without fear of intimidation and abuse, and we’ll take robust action against perpetrators of anti-social behaviour and

violence.

“While the overwhelming majority of young people engage positively in our communities, three young people have been arrested in connection with this incident.

“The allegations are serious, but I recognise those involved are children.

“Our neighbourhood and early intervention teams will speak to their parents and work closely with partner agencies to better understand the factors that may have contributed to

their actions, and to ensure appropriate safeguarding and support are in place.

“Addressing the root causes of offending at an early stage is vital to prevent escalation, reduce the risk of future harm, and help young people make positive choices.

“Keeping our communities safe remains our priority. Through patrols, intelligenceled activity and partnership working, we’ll continue to target those intent on causing harm in the town.”

Thieves target animal sanctuary charity

ASOMERSET animal sanctuary was broken into – with vehicles among items stolen – leaving staff and volunteers “heartbroken”.

Ferne Animal Sanctuary, near Chard, was targeted by thieves some time overnight between Saturday and Sunday, July 25 and 26.

The charity site was closed on July 26 as a result of the thefts, but confirmed “all people and animals are safe and well”, and thanked supporters for messages of support.

A spokesperson said staff and volunteers were “deeply saddened” by the incident, which saw the charity’s pick-up, ATV, trailer and some tools taken.

“These are not simply items we can manage without,” they went on. “They are used every day to maintain the sanctuary, move equipment and supplies around the site and help our

team carry out the work needed to care for the animals who rely on us.

“Their loss will make the team’s job considerably more difficult and will have a significant financial impact on the charity.

“We will be making an insurance claim, but our fear is that there to be a considerable shortfall between what the insurance covers and the true cost of replacing everything that has been taken. While our pick-up may have been old, to us it was priceless.”

They said a fundraiser had been launched “following the incredible response from our amazing supporters”, who had pledged to support the charity as it recovers from the thefts.

“We know that times are difficult for many people, but any donation, however small, will make a genuine difference,” they added.

“We would also be extremely

grateful to hear from any local businesses or suppliers that may be able to donate tools or equipment, or otherwise help us replace what has been stolen.”

Ambitious community plans for derelict former girls' school - how to get involved

ACOMMUNITY-LED bid to transform a derelict former school site into a mixed-use campus offering opportunities for “lifelong learning”.

The scheme, by the Sunny Hill For Good Community Interest company (CIC), aims to revamp the former Bruton School for Girls site into a “vibrant, financially sustainable mixed-use community campus that preserves its educational heritage while creating new opportunities for future generations”.

A spokesperson went on: “Working with outstanding partners, we will create a place where people of all ages can learn, stay healthy, be active, develop new skills, build careers, express their creativity and connect with their

pillars, they said: Education & Skills – including an SEND support hub working alongside schools; Sport & Active Lives; Health & Wellbeing, working with the NHS, charities and more; Arts, Culture & Creative Industries – including studios, a theatre and more; Enterprise & Innovation – offering flexible workspaces; Market & Affordable Housing –developing a mix of market and affordable housing could form part of the long-term masterplan.

“Sunny Hill will bring together schools, colleges, universities, employers, sports clubs, health providers, charities, arts organisations, businesses, local authorities and the wider community,” the spokesperson said.

“Together, we will create a campus that combines education, sport, health, arts, enterprise and housing to deliver lasting public benefit.

“A place to learn, create, stay active, build careers and strengthen communities for generations to come.”

A fundraising campaign to start the process has already

raised more than £5,500, which the group said would enable it to establish a charitable organisation, appoint legal advisers and begin developing the community bid.

Burton School for Girls closed at the end of the 2022 academic year, after more than 120 years.

The 34-acre school site has previously been listed for sale with an asking price of around £9 million. However, nothing has happened, with the buildings falling into disrepair.

Last month, police issued a warning over anti-social behaviour at the “extremely dangerous” derelict site, having noticed an increase in incidents.

And in May, social media influencer Urban Welsh Explorer visited the site and took photographs of the degrading interior and exterior, as they said “nature is slowly reclaiming the halls”.

Scenes captured by the rogue property explorers included a swimming pool filled with dirty water, halls covered in graffiti, and abandoned honour boards alongside smashed doors and windows.

Man killed love rival with Samurai sword

MICHAEL Bretton killed a love rival with a Samurai-style sword and attempted to hide his body.

The 41-year-old, of Armoury Yard, Shaftesbury, in Dorset, attacked lorry driver Craig Hurcombe at a work yard in Gurney Slade, Somerset, on the evening of January 1.

It was the culmination of an "ongoing escalation in Bretton's behaviour" after he became "obsessed" with a woman he met online, Bristol Crown Court heard.

On July 31, Bretton was found guilty of murdering Mr Hurcombe, who was in a relationship with Kate Saunders, who the killer had become obsessed with.

He has been handed a life sentence, with a minimum prison sentence of 29-and-a-half years, minus the time he served on remand ahead of his trial.

The murder took place at Craig’s place of work, in Roemead Road, Gurney Slade, at around 6.20pm on New Year's Day.

It came after Bretton engaged in various methods to seek to follow and monitor Mr Hurcombe, 39, and Kate Saunders, and undermine their relationship in December last year.

After attacking Mr Hurcombe, Bretton tried to conceal his crime by attempting to burn his victim’s clothes, and bury his body in a shallow grave in a small, wooded area on the site.

During a seven-month police investigation, led by Avon & Somerset Police's Major Crime Investigation team, detectives

learned of Craig’s previous relationship with Kate between 2017 and 2023.

The jury was told how, in 2025, Bretton met Kate on an internet dating site and, after a brief, casual relationship, she brought her contact with him to a close - at a time when he wanted their relationship to progress to a more formal 'boyfriend and girlfriend' status.

Following the break-up, Bretton stalked Craig and Kate, including watching her come and go from her home and loitering at Craig’s workplace.

Bretton bought two GPS trackers online which he fitted to cars used by Kate and Craig to monitor the couple’s movements.

The stalking took a more sinister turn on New Year’s Eve last year, when Mr Hurcombe returned to the yard after working away to find the tyres on his Audi had been punctured by Bretton. Vehicle data placed Bretton in nearby Pound Lane at the time Craig arrived at the yard, on January 1.

Detectives also captured the last sighting of Mr Hurcombe on CCTV after he arrived back

at the yard, with the same cameras later picking up Bretton at the site after the murder.

Bretton went on to remove the tracking device from Mr Hurcombe's car, before driving the Audi out of the yard and setting fire to it in the nearby Galley Batch Lane.

In Bretton’s final attempt to conceal his crimes, he drove to an area near the River Stour, carrying the tracking device he had taken from the Audi.

Following an in-depth data investigation, officers visited the area where Bretton had stopped and police divers also entered the water, discovering a rusty sword - believed to have been the murder weapon.

After leaving the scene, Bretton used Mr Hurcombe’s phone and responded to messages pretending to be him, giving the false impression that he was alive and well for several days.

Nicola Hurcombe, Craig’s mum, reported his disappearance to Wiltshire Police on January 10 and a missing person investigation was launched. Colleagues at Wiltshire Police conducted

extensive enquiries and, within a two-day period, had evidence placing Craig’s last known whereabouts at the yard.

The case was then transferred to Avon & Somerset Police and two days later, on January 14, Craig’s body was recovered.

During the trial, Bretton’s defence told the jury Mr Hurcombe had slipped while getting into his lorry and fallen onto a metal shaft. He told the court he followed him to his place of work to confront him and he buried his body after his accidental death.

However, the jury saw through Bretton’s story and found him guilty of murder.

Following his death, Craig’s mum, Nicola, and dad, Paul, issued a tribute to him on behalf of the family, saying: “Craig was the perfect son and an independent man, and we are living with unimaginable loss and a huge hole in our lives which we will never come to terms with.

“Craig was very hardworking, ambitious, and very well thought of in his circle of work, especially his boss, who has expressed his gratitude for all Craig did for the company.”

Following the guilty verdict, they said Mr Hurcombe was "hugely missed by his whole family", including siblings Ashley, Laura, Jess, and niece Skye, as well as the large group of friends he would regularly spend time with.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Neil Meade, said Bretton was "one of the most dangerous individuals I have ever dealt with".

Young people go for free on Somerset buses in August

YOUNG people in Somerset can travel across England next month – for free.

A Government scheme is offering free bus travel for all five-to-15-year-olds across England throughout August.

Somerset Council is working with county bus operators to make sure the Kids Go

Free scheme is available for all young people. The scheme, a Labour Government initiative to help families tackle the cost-ofliving crisis, means children and young people’s fares – usually ranging from £1 to £2 – are scrapped on all participating buses in England from August 1 to August 31.

Families are already able to benefit from free travel for under-5s across the main bus operators, while a £3 cap on bus fares is also already in place.

Opposition to new town plan near Taunton

AROUND 7,000 new homes, schools, healthcare facilities, community spaces and more are proposed as part of a new Taunton garden Village development.

The scheme, from developer Taylor Wimpey, is planned for 1,200 acres the firm owns east of the M5 near Taunton and the parishes of Stoke St Mary, Neroche and West Hatch.

As well as the new “modern, energy-efficient and sustainable” homes, the company said the plans include primary and secondary schools, with SEND provision, as well as healthcare and neighbourhood hubs.

However, the proposal has been met with opposition in neighbouring constituencies, with campaign group Save the Blackdown Vale formed to fight the scheme – with former Taunton Deane MP and

environment minister Rebecca Pow among members.

The site – formerly owned by the Crown Estate – features in a consultation currently running over future development in Somerset – a Local plan Scoping Consultation –earmarked for a ‘new town’.

Colin Fisher, from the Save the Blackdown Vale campaign, said the group intended to make their feelings known through the Somerset Council consultation.

“It’s essential that people respond to this consultation so that the planners at Somerset Council and elected Somerset Councillors hear the voice of local people,” he said.

“This is a completely inappropriate development which would obliterate the Blackdown Vale, which is the unique setting for the Blackdown Hills National Landscape (AONB).

“Far from being smothered in

concrete, it needs to be protected.”

Ms Pow added: “This is some of the best farm land in Somerset, which is vital for food production and our future food security. Once it is gone, it’s gone, and it should not be given up.”

A Taylor Wimpey spokesperson said the scheme was developed in response to housing needs in Somerset – with further public consultation planned.

They said: “Our proposal for Taunton Garden Village

includes around 7,000 modern, energy-efficient and sustainable homes, alongside the schools, healthcare facilities, community spaces and infrastructure needed to create a self-sustaining community.

“A high-level, illustrative masterplan was submitted as part of Somerset Council’s ‘Call for Sites’ in February 2025 setting out the early vision.

“Local engagement will be central to shaping the proposals as they develop and we are working with a range of stakeholders including local schools, care home operators, the NHS, local charities, businesses, wildlife groups and Somerset Council.

“We are promoting the New Garden Village through Somerset Council’s local plan process and will continue to work with local stakeholders and communities as those plans evolve.”

Buying or selling a probate property: What to expect

PROBATE property sales

are a common feature of the housing market, but they can feel unfamiliar, particularly when they arise during an already difficult time.

Whether you are an executor responsible for administering an estate, a beneficiary with an interest in the property or a buyer considering a probate purchase, understanding the process can make a significant difference.

From obtaining a Grant of Probate to working through the conveyancing process, there are additional legal steps involved that can affect timescales and the information available to all parties.

Knowing what to expect at each stage helps to avoid unnecessary delays and ensures the transaction progresses as smoothly as possible.

Probate and sale of property

When a property is sold following a death, the process is known as a probate sale. These transactions can feel different from a standard property sale and often involve additional legal steps.

Probate is the legal process of dealing with a person’s estate after they have died.

Whether a Grant of Probate is required depends on how the property was owned.

If the property was owned solely by the deceased, or as tenants in common with another

person, a Grant of Probate is usually required before the sale can proceed.

This document confirms that the executor has authority to deal with the property and administer the estate.

However, if the property was owned as joint tenants, ownership will usually pass automatically to the surviving owner.

In those circumstances, a Grant of Probate is generally not required to deal with the property.

Stages of a probate property sale

One of the most common misconceptions is that a property cannot be marketed until probate has been granted. In many situations, this is not the case.

The property can usually be placed on the market, viewings can take place and an offer can be accepted before the Grant of Probate has been issued.

This can help reduce delays once probate is obtained.

However, where a Grant of Probate is required, contracts cannot be exchanged until it has been obtained, as the executor must have legal authority to sell the property.

Key differences

One of the key differences in probate sales is timing. The property cannot usually be sold until probate has been granted, which can take several weeks or months depending on the complexity of the estate. This can affect when marketing begins and when a sale can be agreed.

Obtaining a Grant of Probate is often relatively straightforward, but some estates can be more complex. For example, there may be multiple beneficiaries, overseas assets, disputes regarding the estate, or questions about the validity or interpretation of a will. These factors can sometimes extend the probate process and affect the timescales for a property sale.

What does this mean for the property sale

Once probate is in place, the sale process is broadly similar to a standard transaction. However, the seller is usually the executor of the estate rather than the person who lived in the property. This can sometimes mean that there is less direct knowledge of the property's day-to-day condition or history.

For buyers, this may result in additional enquiries being raised during the conveyancing process to clarify information about the property. It is not uncommon for executors to rely

heavily on documentation rather than personal knowledge when responding.

Probate sales can also take slightly longer to progress, particularly if there are multiple beneficiaries involved or if decisions need to be agreed between family members.

From a legal perspective, it is important to ensure that the Grant of Probate is in place and that the executor has authority to sell.

This will need to be verified as part of the conveyancing process to ensure that the transaction is properly documented.

Professional advice

While probate transactions can feel more complex, they are a common part of the property market. With the right guidance, they can proceed smoothly and efficiently.

If you are involved in the sale or purchase of a probate property or require assistance with obtaining a Grant of Probate and administering an estate, our Residential Property Department and Private Client Department can work together to support you throughout the process.

Early legal advice can help you understand the steps involved and avoid unnecessary delays.

Long-standing Langport charity shop closes down after review

A POPULAR Somerset charity shop has closed down.

The Secret World store, in Bow Street, Langport, shut for the final time on July 31 after a review of the shop’s “future operating costs and long-term sustainability”.

Secret World Limited said it “became clear that continuing to operate the store could place increasing demands on the charity’s resources over time”.

“While the Langport Store has made a valuable contribution to our mission for

many years, we have a responsibility to ensure that every charitable pound is used as effectively as possible,” a spokesperson said.

“This is a proactive decision made to safeguard the charity’s long-term sustainability and ensure that our resources remain focused on our core purpose of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing wildlife.

“It is not a response to an immediate financial issue, but a decision made to protect the charity’s future and avoid placing unnecessary pressure on charitable resources in the years ahead.”

They said the decision was not a reflection on the “dedication, commitment or hard work of our staff and volunteers”.

Celebrate our young business leaders

BUDDING business talent is being recognised in a special awards event –with the deadline for nominations looming.

People have just over two weeks to submit nominations for the inaugural Somerset Future 30 initiative, which aims to celebrate the best emerging talent across county businesses, charities and organisations.

Run by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce, the scheme hopes to recognise 30 outstanding young professionals – aged under 30 – who are making a meaningful impact across the county through their achievements in business, innovation and community engagement.

Organisations and businesses are being urged to submit their nominations, with no charge to enter, before the August 14 deadline, with submissions then being judged by an independent

panel of county business leaders.

Entrants must be aged 30 or under and be employed or self-employed by an organisation based in Somerset.

Somerset Future 30 will recognise a group of exceptional individuals rather than single winners in a bid to showcase “the breadth of talent across the county”, the chamber said.

Judges will be looking for people who consistently exceed expectations, demonstrate ambition and are making a

tangible difference in their workplace, sector or community, organisers added.

The selected Somerset Future 30 group will be recognised and profiled, culminating in a celebration event bringing together young professionals and senior leaders from across the county.

David Crew, managing director of Somerset Chamber of Commerce, said: “We’ve had a fantastic response since launching Somerset Future 30 and there is still time for businesses and individuals to get involved.

“We know there are exceptional young people making a real difference in organisations and communities

across the county, but too often their achievements go unrecognised.

“Whether it’s someone leading a project, driving innovation, supporting colleagues or making a wider impact in their community, we want to hear their story. With the deadline on August 14 fast approaching, now is the time to submit a nomination.”

The Chamber has worked with creative partner Hatched Agency to develop the programme’s branding and website.

Barclays, Elite Staffing Solutions and Yeovil College/ NextGen Somerset have confirmed their support as sponsors.

n More information about Somerset Future 30 is available at www.somerset30.co.uk. Nominations must be submitted online before August 14.

Road closures and traffic lights on busy A38

EMERGENCY repairs to a collapsed sewer on the main A38 road between Taunton and Wellington will see temporary traffic lights installed for over a week.

Wessex Water will be carrying out the work on the A38 Wellington Road, at Bradford-on-Tone – between the junctions with Bradford Road and Silver Street.

Work started on Friday (July 30), with the firm saying it hoped the project would be finished on Saturday (August 8).

The work means road closures in Bradford Road and Silver Street, with manuallycontrolled two-way temporary lights in place 24 hours a day on the A38.

Somerset Council said bus services in the area “are likely to be affected and operators have been informed”.

“We appreciate the short

notice,” a spokesperson added.

“These repairs are needed urgently to prevent more serious problems, such as flooding or sinkholes, and to ensure the road is ready for planned junction improvement works starting later in August.

“Please allow extra time for

your journey and thank you for your patience.”

A Wessex Water spokesperson said: “This is an emergency repair on an area of collapsed sewer which runs under the A38, with the twoway lights in place to allow our team to complete the work

safely. We’ll be working hard to get the repairs finished as quickly as possible to allow the road to operate as normal and variable messaging (VMS) signs have been put in place in the area to warn road users. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Mini stolen in raids at trading estate

Travelling artist's display takes visitors around the world

ATRAVELLING artist will settle in Taunton for a special exhibition taking visitors around the world.

Watercolour painter Moish Sokal, below, will celebrate his 36-year painting career in the 1001 Images display, at the Brewhouse Theatre Gallery, from September 2 to October 12.

"In his colourful paintings, Sokal conveys another version of the famous 1001 exotic tales; tales of legends and adventure, distant communities, peace and serenity which he has encountered on his many trips abroad," a spokesperson said.

Travelling for years, "escaping the English winters", Moish found inspiration in numerous adventure trips to

the likes of South America, India, Havana, Africa and more.

Also included is a selection of limited edition prints and a vast collection of signed cards reflecting the hundreds of images painted during those many years, culminating with painting, No 1001 'Washing Done'.

The 1001 Images exhibition is open from 10am to 2pm, Monday to Friday, at the Brewhouse Theatre Gallery from September 2.

Home & Garden

A mania for tulips!

AS the calendar runs on through this extraordinary year, most gardeners are beginning to wonder about the wisdom of battling the elements – the drought, the soaring temperatures and the total lack of any sign of rain. We can only hope, and believe, that this summer is, as the pundits say, exceptional. But ever optimistic, we gardeners plan ahead to perhaps a cooler, somewhat damper, more usual English season next year. And what better time to make plans for next spring’s flower display?

Ordering bulbs now, well in advance of the autumn rush, will, it is hoped, ensure a good selection of some of the more rare and sought-after forms of tulip, especially. The beautiful ‘broken’ colours of the specialised ‘florists’ forms that

were bred in the 17th century are quite addictive.

Tulipa ‘Absalon’ – bred around 1780 – is perhaps one of the least difficult to find, yet most attractive form. It has rich chocolate-maroon petals in a traditional shape, but each petal is marked with flashes of cream. It is ‘broken’.

Technically, this is a result of a virus that is carried from one broken tulip to the next on the propagator’s knife, but for years it was a mystery.

Tulipa ‘Heritage Columbine’ is another, somewhat younger form – a dusty, dark purple with pale ‘feathers’ lending a streaked effect. It is still just about available today.

Another, more modern collector’s form is ‘Spryng Rembrandt’ whose white flowers are streaked with raspberry-red flames. It would associate well with some of the older cultivars and the modern forms.

However, a few of each of these in terracotta pots could spark a fascination for tulips, or, should that be, a dangerous addiction? Such passions brought down the Dutch economy in the 17th century. Tulipomania has been well documented. It is the stuff of legends.

But those bulbs do still exist. These rare forms are carefully and jealously guarded by members of the Wakefield and

North of England Tulip Society. They hold a competition every spring, and boast national and international support from several countries, notably a very active and successful Swedish contingent and many enthusiasts from the Netherlands. Members, of course, continue to swap and sell their own ‘florists’ varieties’, which are grown on and shown every year. But be warned - remember what happened to those 17th century investors.
