Family steps in to ensure town is watered!
A
WELLINGTON business has stepped in to help keep the town looking blooming marvellous – despite the introduction of a hosepipe ban. When Wessex Water introduced a ban on hosepipes at midnight on Tuesday, August 18, Wellington Town Council was contemplating ceasing watering of blooms around the town. Spots such as town centre displays, living wall installations and the monument planter were facing a spell without a dowsing. However, the Coles family at Chelston Farm generously offered the town council Open Spaces team access to their borehole and rainwater collection facilities, meaning watering could continue. Open spaces manager, Darren Hill, said: "We are really pleased that the Coles family

18 tonnes of waste removed after unauthorised encampment
Specialist contractors were brought in to remove waste left behind after the encampment moved on
T
EAMS worked “intensively” to remove 18 TONNES of waste – including household rubbish, abandoned and fly-tipped items and more – after an unauthorised encampment left Bridgwater. Bridgwater Town Council (BTC) staff completed what they described as “major clean-up” at Whitegates following the departure of the encampment, as well as repairing damage to the site, and installing new security measures. The operation got underway on Monday, August 17, and involved “significant resources”, the council said, including specialist biohazard removal contractors to safely remove human waste left on site. Somerset Council, which owns the Whitegates site, started legal proceedings to move the encampment on after it was reported on August 4. BTC is responsible for maintaining the land, but Somerset Council’s Enforcement Team attended the site on August 11 to serve the necessary notices and documentation, with a court application subsequently
submitted following the arrival of additional caravans on August 14. “The encampment resulted in environmental and infrastructure damage, including the cutting of trees and vegetation within the area,” a BTC spokesperson said. “The condition in which the site was left required an extensive and coordinated clean-up effort to ensure it could be safely reopened and enjoyed by the local community. “The full cost of the operation is still being assessed and will include waste removal, biohazard clearance, repairs to damaged infrastructure, additional security measures and the substantial staff
resources required during both the incident and subsequent restoration works.” Cllr Tim Mander, chair of the BTC Amenities Committee, said: “This has been a significant operation involving many hours of work from Bridgwater Town Council staff and contractors to restore Whitegates following the unauthorised encampment. “The amount of waste and damage left behind was extremely disappointing. Our teams have worked tirelessly to remove around 18 tonnes of rubbish, repair the site, address serious health and safety concerns and ensure the area is once again accessible for residents and visitors.

“I’d like to thank our staff, partner organisations and local residents for their patience throughout this process. While the legal enforcement process was led by Somerset Council, Bridgwater Town Council has committed considerable time, effort and resources to restoring Whitegates to a standard the community can be proud of. “The scale of the clean-up highlights the significant impact unauthorised encampments can have on public spaces. Our priority has always been to make the site safe, secure and accessible again as quickly as possible, and we will continue to explore measures to help prevent similar incidents in the future.” Human waste was among debris left at the site, the council said

380-home development plan for Yeovil
P
LANS for a new, 380home "residential neighbourhood" including a country park - on the outskirts of Yeovil have been submitted. Pad Design Ltd, on behalf of Hallam Land, has submitted an outline planning application to Dorset Council for a development on land at Compton Road, Yeovil. A village green and play area are part of the plans, as well as "improvements for walking and cycling along Compton Road". The 93-acre site is bordered by the A30 Babylon Hill to the south, with the application stating it provides an opportunity to provide muchneeded housing, alongside "active travel through improvements along this route and towards the town centre", including the proximity of Pen Mill station and bus routes on the A30. Up to 380 homes could be
developed, including 35% (133) being 'affordable dwellings', the application said, with a new access junction created on the southern side of Compton Road. "The site's proximity to, physical connectivity to, and functional integration with Yeovil constitutes a highly sustainable and suitable location for residential development, relative to the majority of northwest Dorset and indeed southeast Somerset," the application said. The site is on the boundary between the Dorset Council and Somerset Council areas, on the south side of Yeovil, with the plans saying the scheme "accords with the general thrust of both (former) West Dorset and South Somerset’s spatial strategies that seek to direct the most growth to the top tier settlements". The site is split by Compton Road, with homes planned on one side, a country park on the

Morgan pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary and driving while disqualified and has been sentenced to 45 months, serving 18 months in prison and the remainder of the sentence on license. Ruja pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary and has been sentenced to 30 months, serving 12 months in prison and the remainder of the sentence on license. The charges came after incidents in various Somerset town, including Burnham-onSea, Weston-super-Mare and Glastonbury, between March 16 and May 5. After the sentencing hearing,
Avon & Somerset Police Neighbourhood Inspector Charmaine Dyne, said: “We welcome the result of this investigation, and we’re committed to taking robust action against offenders while working proactively to identify and disrupt criminality. “We understand the profound personal impact burglary can have on victims. We have offered access to specialist
support services to those affected, who have understandably been left distressed and feeling unsafe in their own homes. “I’d urge people to continue to look out for each other in our communities by reporting any suspicious activity as it happens, this helps us understand the scale of an issue so we can invest the appropriate level of resources to tackle it.”

Years-long £835,000 restoration of Castle Cary station complete and officially open!
T
HE years-long £835,000 restoration of Castle Cary station has been officially unveiled. Chair of Department for Transport Operator Limited (DFTO), Sir Andrew Haines, was on the platform in Somerset today (August 17) to take in the transformation, which celebrates the history of the Great Western Railway and its early 20thcentury heritage. The project was funded by £560,000 from the Department for Transport and £275,000 from the Railway Heritage Trust and has seen many of the station’s original features brought back to life, while improving accessibility and making the station more welcoming for travellers. Castle Cary station’s original entrance has been reopened, alongside a new accessible ramp providing step-free access. Elsewhere, the ticket office has been relocated to improve customer flow and provide a more welcoming space, while historic features including fireplaces, skirting, dado rails and cornices have been uncovered, with new timber furniture and joinery complementing the station’s early 20th-century character. Extra seating with views of the platform, a new digital departure board and upgraded toilet facilities, including an enlarged accessible toilet with baby-changing facilities, also feature. Sir Andrew said: “I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to open the new and improved Castle Cary station today. It’s a great example of how we can provide meaningful benefits to the public – such as through improving accessibility and providing a new digital departure board – while remaining true to the station’s iconic heritage. “I hope Castle Cary’s

passengers are pleased with the improvements and enjoy their journeys to and from this unique station.” Mark Hopwood CBE, managing director of GWR, said: “Castle Cary is a wonderful example of how we can celebrate our railway heritage while making our stations work better for today’s customers. “We’re delighted to have worked with the Department for Transport, Railway Heritage Trust and Oxford Architects to restore the station’s historic character, while improving accessibility and the customer experience. “We’re also proud of our close partnership with The Newt in Somerset, which is helping to create an exciting destination at Castle Cary and showcase the very best of the area’s heritage.” And Railway Heritage Trust
Director, Tim Hedley-Jones, added: “We are pleased to have supported GWR with a grant for the restoration of this historic station building. “The project shows that looking after our railway heritage also delivers benefits to passengers such as better accessibility and improved waiting facilities. All those who worked on this project are to be commended for their attention to period detail.” Oxford Architects were appointed to lead on the design,
working alongside historic railway architecture specialist David Redfern, while Bristol’s Honeyfield Property Services delivered the transformation. The project forms part of GWR’s ongoing investment in Castle Cary following improvements to the western car park, a new cycle shelter and lighting upgrades completed in 2023. It also builds on GWR’s partnership with The Newt in Somerset, whose restored 1912 Creamery next to the station includes an artisanal dairy, restaurant and farm shop. Glastonbury bookshop up for sale after 'profoundly difficult decision'
A
LANDMARK longstanding Glastonbury bookshop is up for sale. Labyrinth Books, in the High Street, has been put on the market by owner, Keridwyn Hershberger, who took on the store last year. In an emotional announcement, Keridwyn said they were “unable to fulfil the role of owner in the way the shop deserves”. “Last autumn, I was given the extraordinary opportunity to purchase Labyrinth Books,” they said. “For me, it was nothing short of a dream come true.
“Like many of you, I treasure unique, independent shops – especially bookstores. I was deeply honoured by the chance to become a small part of Glastonbury and to help carry forward the legacy of this much-loved shop. “It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I must share that I will not be able to continue that journey. “After many months of hope, planning, and working through the complexities of international immigration and visa requirements, it has become clear that I am unable to fulfil the role of owner in the way the
shop deserves. “This has been a profoundly difficult decision, and one I did not make lightly. “Labyrinth deserves an owner who can be fully present, pour their whole heart into its future, and serve the community every day. Much as I wish that person could have been me, circumstances beyond my control mean it cannot.” They said while the ownership was coming to an end “sooner than I ever imagined”, their “love for Labyrinth Books and Glastonbury has not diminished”.
“I remain deeply grateful to everyone who welcomed me with such kindness and encouragement,” they added. “The shop will now be passed into new hands, and my sincerest hope is that its next steward will cherish it as much as I do. “Labyrinth has been a treasured part of Glastonbury for more than 25 years, and I have every confidence that its story is far from over. “Thank you for allowing me to step into your lives, even for a little while, I am truly honoured to have met so many amazing people.”
Close encounters of the bird kind! FROME ranger Laura O'Brien was watering flowers near the town library recently when she had a close encounter - with a kingfisher. The intrepid bird decided to take refuge on her hand for 10 minutes.
"A kingfisher landed on the ground nearby and looked as if it might need help, so Ranger Laura O’Brien picked it up to keep it safe," a Frome Town Council spokesperson said. "It was amazing to be able to be that close to it and just be
able to look at its feathers in detail; for it to just sit on my finger looking into my eyes," Laura added. "I took my glove off and it kind of wanted to perch on my finger, so I was just watering the flowers with a bird on my finger."

Candidates announced for election to replace councillor jailed over JSO protest CANDIDATES vying to replace a Somerset councillor jailed over his role in Just Stop Oil protests have been revealed. A total of five people have been nominated to contest the Frome West seat on Somerset Council at the polls on September 3, after it was left vacant following the resignation of Green Party representative, Michael Dunk. Mr Dunk formally resigned from his council seat after he was jailed over a protest on the M25 in November 2022. He was among a group of JSO activists who scaled a gantry over the motorway, leading to it being closed, to protest new fossil fuel projects across the UK. In December last year, Mr Dunk was jailed for 26 months, and ordered to pay £4,380 in court costs and a victim surcharge of £228. Now, five people will be on the ballot paper for the election of a Somerset Councillor for Frome West on September 3. They are: n Dominic Ellison (Green Party) n Drew Gardner (Liberal

Democrats) n David Quantrill-Simon (Conservative Party) n Christopher Wildridge (Labour Party) n Joseph Williams (Reform UK) The deadline for applications to register to vote and for postal votes has now passed. People planning to vote in person at a polling station must
provide photo ID, which can include a passport, driving licence or older person’s bus pass. The full list of acceptable ID can be found at electoralcommission.org.uk/ voterID. You can still use your photo ID if it is out of date, if it looks like you. The name on your ID should be the same name you used to register to vote.
Applications to vote by emergency proxy at this election must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by post at Electoral Services, Somerset Council, County Hall, Taunton, TA1 4DY, or by hand at Electoral Registration Officer at Electoral Services, Cannards Grave Road, Shepton Mallet, Somerset, BA4 5BT by 5pm on Thursday, September 3.
Arcade plan unveiled for former Yeovil supermarket A FORMER Yeovil supermarket could soon be converted into an amusement arcade. High Score Arcades Ltd has applied to Somerset Council for permission to change the use of the former Iceland store, at 6-8 Ivel Square, in the Quedam Centre, to a “family entertainment centre”. Iceland closed in January, and the plans said the new use would bring the premises back into use and boost Yeovil town centre. “Town centres continue to face challenges from changing shopping habits and the growth of online retail,” the application said. “Introducing a complimentary leisure use will encourage people to spend longer in the town centre, benefiting surrounding retailers, cafes, and other businesses through increased visitor numbers and
dwell time.” It said the arcade “broadens the range of activities available to residents and visitors”, as well as supporting “the continued regeneration and vitality of the town centre”. No external alterations are proposed for the premises, the plans said, though signage
is envisioned. “Customer activity will be contained entirely withing the building, with the premises professionally managed and supervised by staff,” the application went on. “CCTV and appropriate management procedures will be in place to ensure the venue operates responsibly.” The new business would bring the building back into use, as well as creating employment and make a “positive contribution” to the town centre, the plans added. n For more detailsm and to comment on the plans, log on to somerset.gov.uk and search application reference 26/01740/ COU

'Suspicious' field fire near Taunton sparks police appeal
The field, at Norton Fitzwarren, was badly damaged by the fire
A
"SUSPICIOUS" fire destroyed around five hectares of fields near Taunton on Friday afternoon (August 21) - with police launching an arson investigation into the cause of the blaze. Crews from Taunton, Danes Castle, Bridgwater, Cullompton, Nether Stowey, Porlock, Street, Wellington, Yeovil, Chard, Street, Ilminster and Somerton were sent to the scene, at Pen Elm Hill, Nether Stowey, at just after 2pm. A Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "This was a large fire in the open damaging roughly five hectares of open field and woodland. "The fire was extinguished using two main water jets, two hose reel jets, beaters, leaf blower, two all-terrain vehicles, Scottie packs and a drone." Meanwhile, police are appealing for information as they treat the fire as "suspicious". "At this early stage, pending further enquiries, we are treating this incident as suspicious," an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said. Anyone with information about the fire should contact police on 101 and give the reference number 5226236689.

'Extra special' kitten coming back to life after being found by side of the road... Little Muldoon was found by the side of a road near Taunton
“
I HAVE seen so many cats and kittens over the years, but this little chap seems almost too perfect.” A tiny kitten found alone on a rural Taunton road, feared abandoned by a scared mother, has been hailed as ‘the cutest ever’ by a long-standing charity volunteer. Ann Manners, with husband David, has been volunteering for Cats Protection for over 40 years, helping thousands of cats. For the past 15 of those years, she has hand-reared the youngest rescue kittens. However, little Muldoon – found lying beside a country road in Elworthy – stopped her in her tracks with his pictureperfect looks and affectionate nature. “Muldoon is white and black with baby-pink ears, nose, lips and paw-pads, but what makes him extra special is that he is not a kitten who was bred to give him the most appealing features, instead he was most likely part of litter born to a feral mother in the countryside,” she said. “From experience, we believe she was moving him and his siblings to safety a few days after giving birth when she
was disturbed and had to abandon him.” And she said Muldoon was “almost too perfect”, and added: “He is advanced for his age and was responsive from the start, even when he first arrived and his eyes and ears were still closed, making him deaf and blind. “We’ve certainly never had a kitten of this age who is so affectionate. He ‘marks’ us with the side of his face and happily rolls over to be tickled. He’s just amazing.” Sweet-natured Muldoon was saved from the tough life of a rural feral cat by a member of the public as they drove past him lying alone beside the road. They took him directly to Deane Veterinary Centre, in Wellington New Road, Taunton, where he was found to be in good health with no signs of fleas, dehydration or malnutrition and just one tick on his nose. After being given a thorough vet check and plenty of TLC, the practice contacted Cats Protection Taunton & Minehead, where Ann and David took on the task of hand-rearing the handsome kitten who will be rehomed
Pictures: David Manners
when he is old enough. Ann added: “Muldoon was likely fed just before his mother left him which gave him a potentially life-saving full tummy. We found two more ticks which adds to the theory that his mother was feral. “Hand-rearing very young kittens is hard work and requires round-the clock care. Muldoon is now almost four weeks old, and we are providing him with all the care he should have received from his mother until he was at least eight weeks. “Kittens as young as he was when he arrived cannot maintain body temperature or feed and toilet themselves, they are very vulnerable and he certainly would not have survived if he hadn’t been found.” But he is now thriving, she said, sleeping through the night and gaining weight. “We love caring for cats and kittens but looking after a
kitten as adorable and affectionate as Muldoon makes the feeds every two hours less of a hardship,” Ann said. “Especially when he does sweet things like try to suckle on his tiny paws while awaiting his latest meal. “He really is a gorgeous little cat. Hand-rearing is something I always wanted to do, and I am fortunate to now be in a position to concentrate on all that it demands.” n For more about Cats Protection Taunton & Minehead visit www.cats.org.uk/taunton.

Mayor of Frome Mark Durrington, inset, is encouraging people to have their say over the transport plan

Have your say over transport in Frome
P
UBLIC transport, cycling, walking and parking will be among topics considered as Frome sets about formulating a new strategy for how residents get around. Frome Town Council (FTC) is encouraging residents, businesses and community groups to help shape a new plan that will influence future transport and connectivity priorities. The Frome Area Movement and Place Plan, being developed in partnership with Somerset Council and neighbouring parishes, will explore how people travel around the town and the wider area.
It will look at how access to jobs, education, healthcare, shops, services and leisure opportunities can be improved by considering walking, cycling, public transport, road safety, accessibility, parking and links between nearby villages and towns. As work on the plan continues, FTC is keen to hear experiences and ideas from people, whether they regularly walk into town, commute by car, catch the bus, cycle to work or rely on mobility aids to get around. Businesses and employers are also encouraged to take part, helping highlight any challenges such as staff
travel, customer access, deliveries and connections. Mayor of Frome, Cllr Mark Dorrington, said: “We all experience moving around Frome differently. For some people it’s a daily school run, for others it’s getting to work, accessing healthcare, visiting family or simply enjoying the places around us. “We’re looking beyond transport alone and asking how people connect with the places that matter in their everyday lives. It might be a busy junction that needs attention, a missing link in a walking route, challenges with public transport, concerns about accessibility or
simply an idea for making it easier to get around. “By hearing from as many people as possible we can build a better understanding of what’s working well, what’s missing and what opportunities there may be for the future.” A survey has been launched on the My Frome portal – to allow people to easily submit their thoughts and ideas. Visit myfrome.frometowncouncil. gov.uk/en-GB to take part. Meanwhile, people can give their views in person at a series of events in the coming weeks and months, including at the Frome Agricultural & Cheese Show, on September 12.
Man killed after crane lorry overturns in town A MAN in his 30s has sadly died after a crash on the A37 in Somerset involving a lorry and a van. The incident, involving two vehicles, happened on the busy road at Ston Easton at around 2.25pm on Thursday (August 20) afternoon. A lorry, with a crane attached, overturned in the crash and collided with a van, police said.
“Sadly, a passenger within the van has died at the scene. His family have been informed and they are being supported by a specially-trained officer,” an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said. “The van driver has attended hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. “The lorry driver is not believed to have sustained any physical injury.”
The A37 High Street was closed overnight as an investigation into the crash took place, and is set to “remain shut for some time further due to the complex recovery work required and likely repairs needed to the highway”, the police added. Anyone who saw the crash, or has dashcam footage that might help the investigation, should contact police online or on 101, quoting reference 5226235326.

'Complex' job sees sinkhole road reopen
R
EPAIRS on a sinkhole in Castle Cary have been finished - more than two years after it appeared. Temporary traffic lights were first installed in Station Road after the hole was discovered, in July 2024. However, as Somerset Council contractors attempted a quick repair of the depression, it became apparent it was a “much more complex issue involving the culvert beneath the road and nearby utility services”. It meant the restricted watercourse could not be fully examined until the road was excavated, with complex work getting underway. Now, the repair has been completed and the route is back open to traffic. Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s lead member for highways and transport, said: “I am delighted the road is reopening. I know the repairs have taken longer than expected but we had to fully understand the conditions under the road and deliver a

As investigations progressed, we and our contractor adapted the design to the conditions found on site, resulting in a robust repair that will protect the highway for years to come.”
Police join wedding convoy... A SUPERCAR wedding convoy on the M4 and M5 ended in several cars being seized by police. Officers from the Avon & Somerset Police Roads Policing Team were alerted to reports of "a number of high-performance supercars being driven dangerously" on the motorways on Sunday (August 23). "Officers located the convoy and, despite the impressive performance of the vehicles, proved that horsepower doesn’t replace common sense," a spokesperson said. "Several vehicles have now been seized, and the drivers have been reported. Further enquiries are ongoing to identify other offending vehicles." They added: "Let’s be clear, the motorway is not the place for a wedding convoy to become a rolling supercar showcase, putting other road users in danger. Enjoy the cars. Enjoy the wedding. Just don’t make the journey there somebody else’s worst day."

The lettings team at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s (GTH) Taunton office were crowned the town's best at the British Property Awards - for the second year in a row. Headed by Amy Davidson MARLA, who has nearly two decades of experience in the property sector, the team was praised for being well-placed to advise landlords and tenants alike on the latest legislation affecting the industry. With the Renters Rights Act now law – the biggest shake up in the rental market in years – GTH said "it is vital to work with property professionals who understand the new legislation and the implications for landlords letting out properties". "Without proper guidance from knowledgeable lettings practitioners, it would be easy for landlords to fall foul of the new legislation and potentially face hefty fines," a spokesperson added. Health and wellness centre plan for Yeovil trading estate unit A NEW health and wellness centre – including a sauna, cold plunge baths and therapy rooms – could soon open on a Yeovil trading estate. Plans have been submitted to Somerset Council to create the facility in Unit 9 at the Lynx Trading Estate, in Yeovil, by TJ Hawkins Architectural Design Consultants on behalf of Luke Ashworth. As well as internal changes to create a sauna, cold plunge baths, therapy rooms, treatment
rooms and an exercise area, external changes would be made to the front of the building “to make the property look more in-keeping with the type of business we are proposing”. “The unit was previously used as offices for Watertite heating services Yeovil and is now vacant,” the application went on. It added: “This type of business is becoming very popular and there are not many other businesses like this in
Yeovil and the surrounding areas.” The scheme will now be considered by Somerset Council planners.

Animal charity announces gala
A
SOMERSET animal sanctuary is planning a second charity gala to raise much-needed funds. Ferne Animal Sanctuary is inviting supporters, businesses and members of the community to its 2026 Charity Gala, to be held at The Shrubbery Hotel in Ilminster on Friday, October 16. It comes after a successful event last year, the charity's first, with an evening of dining, entertainment and fundraising on offer. Guests will enjoy a twocourse meal, a welcome glass of Prosecco or orange juice, with music from DJ Baroness Boogie and Nelle Curtis, plus a silent auction and raffle featuring a range of prizes. Emma Purnell, chief executive officer at Ferne Animal Sanctuary, said: "Following the success of last year’s gala, we’re delighted to be bringing the event back for 2026 and look forward to
welcoming supporters, friends and local businesses for another memorable evening. "The gala is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy good food, music and company while helping the animals who rely on Ferne. We would particularly love to see businesses from across the region booking tables, whether they are bringing colleagues together, thanking their teams or entertaining clients. "As a non-government funded charity, events like this make an important contribution to our work. The money raised
will help us continue to provide food, shelter, veterinary treatment and ongoing care for hundreds of animals." The silent auction and raffle will feature prizes including: n Champagne afternoon tea for two at The Ritz n A selection of artwork n An overnight stay at The Old George Broadwindsor n A Boss handbag n A Case of wine from Louma Country hotel n Two Ferne limited edition Hoodie’s n An Honor Pad 9 tablet n A Galaxy smart watch Tickets for the Ferne Animal Sanctuary 2026 Charity Gala are available for £49 per person, with tables seating 10 guests. Explore town's medieval past
P
EOPLE can travel back to medieval times by visiting a temporary exhibition in Bridgwater. Visitors to a display at The Blake Museum can uncover the story of one the Bridgwater Franciscan Friary, one of the town's "most significant medieval sites". Curated by historian and researcher Dr Hannah West, the display runs until Saturday, September 5, offering "a unique insight into the history of the town's Grey Friars and their important role in medieval Bridgwater". "The exhibition explores some of the questions that have intrigued local historians for generations, including who the Grey Friars were, where the friary once stood, how large the site was and what life inside the friary may have been like," a spokesperson said. "Drawing upon research, the exhibition brings together

historical evidence and interpretation to reveal the story of a religious community that was once an important part of Bridgwater's landscape." The museum, at 5 Blake Street, Bridgwater, is open Wednesday to Saturday, from 10am to 4pm, with last entry at 3pm. Admission is free, although donations to support the museum are welcome. "Whether you are interested
in local history, archaeology, medieval life or simply discovering more about Bridgwater's past, this exhibition offers a fascinating opportunity to explore a hidden part of the town's heritage," the spokesperson added. n For more information about Bridgwater's Blake Museum, visit www. bridgwatermuseum.org.uk.

Winery opening for weekend of events
A
WINERY and press in the Somerset countryside near Taunton is opening its doors next week for a special event. The 40-acre Thornfalcon Winery & Press, which launched last year, is opening its doors as a working winery, press and space on September 5 and 6 for a "celebration of great food and wine". A host of events "rooted in land, produce, craft and hospitality" are planned to launch the venue's programme of tours and tastings, a new Supper Clubs series and wine school, as well as creative, wellness and corporate retreats. Cooking masterclasses with acclaimed Italian chef Davide Bonaldi, and outdoor cookery skills with ex River Café chef Ross Stacey, a five-course supper club paired with Thornfalcon’s first drinks range, with chefs by Ross Stacey and
Davide Bonaldi, vineyard tours, English wine and cider tasting with winemaker Panu Long and walking trails across Thornfalcon Winery & Press, are among events planned across the weekend. Sophie Brendel, who owns Thornfalcon with Panu Long, said: "It has been a brilliant first year at Thornfalcon Winery &
Press. Thornfalcon comes alive where nature and creativity meet, and we are delighted to be expanding Thornfalcon’s offer with our first drinks range, and an exciting new programme of retreats, wellness, experiences and events that celebrate wine, cider, great food, local produce and our beautiful Somerset landscape.
"These are born from our love of flavour, craftsmanship and the land, and we’re hugely excited to be working with such a fantastic line up of chefs, producers, creatives and experts as we evolve." n For more details on the winery and the open weekend, visit www.thornfalcon.com.

Top tips for saving seeds this season by Sally Gregson
T
HIS extraordinary year has been especially remarkable for the number and variety of flowers that have wowed their audiences, followed naturally by the number of fruits/nuts/seeds. To reap this wonderful harvest, pick the seeding heads while they are ripe and dry. Most will be rattling in their pods. Some may need to be taken from the parent plant and dried in the house. Others will simply require scattering where they are. For those that are ripe – the aquilegias, foxgloves, Oenothera etc – cut off the dry heads and pop each variety into a separate paper bag marked with the name of the plant and date of harvest. It is frightening how quickly and easy it is to mistake seed of a special aquilegia from its
neighbour. When you tip them out onto a piece of paper on the kitchen table, they look exactly the same as any other seed you have carefully harvested. Clean the seed of all the debris – the dried casing, stem and leaves, if necessary. If the seeds are still slightly moist, dry them out in a labelled paper envelope overnight. If the whole stem is still slightly green, fix a paper bag around the heads and pin the stem to a dark, dry part of the ceiling. Leave it for a couple of weeks before tackling the next, cleaning stage. Spread a large sheet of paper on the table and tip out the saved seed-heads. The seeds often separate themselves from the debris, but otherwise sort the viable, shiny seed from the chaff, and tip them out into a small paper envelope marked with the name and date of harvest.
Save seeds for planting next spring
Seal it and place the envelope into a plastic storage box in the fridge. This will maintain the humidity level, at a cool temperature. Fridges are usually about 4C-5C. That’s an ideal temperature for storage. But some seeds can just be sprinkled where they fall, such as opium poppies – Papaver somniferum; Oenothera; forget-me-not; and many
grasses such as Stipa tenuissima whose thin seedlings are easy to spot in the spring. If you have no plans to ‘improve’ the soil with an over-wintering mulch, simply scatter the setting seeds in situ. Otherwise store them until the spring before sowing in the hopefully damp ground. And wait. Fingers crossed for another floriferous spring.

Plants to pep up summer salads by Sally Gregson

S our scorching hot summer draws to a close, it’s worth thinking about using the last warm days to grow some salads to pick and eat in a few weeks’ time. The tomatoes may still be producing some fruit outside or in the greenhouse, but if you have a little space there are one or two really flavoursome crops to try in the closing months of the season. To spice up the last of the summer salads, try sowing a row of some of the oriental leaves such as pak choi or mizuna. Pak choi can be picked as if it were lettuce – a few young leaves at a time. The plants will keep growing at this cooler time of year, free of flea beetle which normally devastates them. If they do persist, they might
A pak choi seedling sprouts in soil
even produce bulb-like bases to the clumps. Delicious cut and stir-fried! And mizuna is a Japanese leaf that withstands and grows even in quite cold conditions. They, too, are delicious used in stir-fries. Cresses grow well at this latter end of the season. American cress is similar to watercress. It does need to be kept cool and moist. But if it grows well, its leaves are peppery and lift the flavour of dull lettuce leaves. And Greek cress is a delicious leafy salad
with a fresh taste and it packs quite a kick. Pick it young and spicy. Chervil is an old-fashioned herb/salad with a marked aniseed flavour traditionally served with fish. Chopped finely, it combines well with parsley, chives and lemon to make a herb crust for fillets of sea-bass. Its pretty ferny leaves look good in the greenhouse or outside. Sow a row now and keep it well watered to prevent it from running to seed, which will terminate the crop. In many ways autumn salads are easier to germinate and grow than summer lettuces, which often refuse to germinate in hot weather. Oriental leaves make a delicious salad to serve as the last of the tomatoes ripen. And if you’ve been growing cucumber, doubtless you will be relieved to find another green salad to spice up those crunchy slices.
