Family nearly missed £1 million Lotto win!
I
LMINSTER builder Mark Jefferson continued his every-day life for a whopping NINE DAYS after winning £1 million on the lottery – because he didn’t know he’d won. The 54-year-old, who plays the Lotto draw as part of a family syndicate which includes wife Naomi, 51, and their four adult children, admitted he ignored a string of emails telling him to check his National Lottery account – before discovering he was a millionaire. Even when he received a call informing him the family had won an incredible prize, he took some convincing. “When I was told I’d won a million pounds, I genuinely thought someone was winding me up,” he said. “A builder from Somerset being told over the phone he’d won £1 million? I wasn’t convinced at all.”
The Jefferson family celebrates their jackpot win
However, when the news sunk in, he said he got emotional. “I was absolutely floored. I was in tears. To think I’d spent nine days ignoring emails about something so life-changing is incredible,” he went on.

Now, each of the six family members are making plans for their share of the prize, including a big family holiday abroad, a new convertible for Naomi and a caravan on the south coast where the family is keen to enjoy spontaneous
weekends away, spending time together. “For us, it’s all about making memories,” said Mark. “Knowing the family has opportunities we never imagined before is the best feeling in the world.”

Hollywood composer's studio plan in Wells Hollywood composer David Buckley, inset, is believed to be behind plans for a new recording studio in Mountery Close, Wells
A
N award-winning Hollywood composer – whose credits include Jason Bourne, The Sandman and The Good Wife – is understood to be behind fresh plans for a recording studio in Wells. Emmy-nominated musician David Buckley, a Wells Cathedral School alum, is believed to have applied to Somerset Council for planning permission to change the use if 3 Mountery Close from a dwelling to a music studio, along with extensions and alterations to the building. The application said the development would provide a replacement for Mr Buckley’s existing temporary studio, within a home at Beaumont House, creating a facility in a two-storey extension measuring around 6.6m by 6.8m on the southern side of the property.
The existing house and extension would contain studio and control room space, while the garage would be converted to provide a small workspace and ancillary amenity space, while outside, three parking spaces and turning space would remain on the existing driveway. Mr Buckley has enjoyed an extensive career composing music for Hollywood films and major television productions, with film scores including Matt Damon-fronted blockbuster Jason Bourne, Nobody, Greenland, Papillon, The Nice Guys and Ben Affleck’s The Town. His television credits include Netflix shows The Sandman and The Lincoln Lawyer, as well as Evil, Your Honor, The Good Wife and its spin-off, The Good Fight. He received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding
Original Main Title Theme Music for The Good Fight and has also contributed music to productions including Wonder Woman, American Hustle and the Fifty Shades films. Yet despite his Hollywood career, the musician has retained strong links to Wells. He attended Wells Cathedral School between 1986 and 1994 and began his musical career as a chorister at the city cathedral. While still a chorister, he performed on Peter Gabriel’s score for Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ, before later studying music at Cambridge University. Wells Cathedral School has said Buckley is “based between Wells and Los Angeles”, and in 2025 named him one of its Foundation Fellows. The Wells Cathedral Choir also featured on his soundtracks for Papillon and Greenland,
Pictures: Google/WCCT
while Buckley has subsequently worked with Wells choristers on other recording projects, and in 2025, his choral work – Lamentations – was performed at Wells Cathedral. The latest studio plans follow an earlier application for the same development, which was refused by Somerset Council in March due to insufficient information over the required Biodiversity Net Gain. Wells City Council has supported the plans, and the fresh application said changes to Biodiversity Net Gain rules – which came into effect on August 6 – mean the requirement no longer applies to the 0.1068-hectare site. n For more on the proposals, and to comment, visit somerset. gov.uk and search the application reference 2026/1520/FUL.

Hosepipe ban in Somerset for the first time in 50 years: Here's what it means for you
W
ESSEX Water has imposed a hosepipe ban - the first in the region since 1976 - as a result of record-breaking low rainfall and high temperatures. Much of Somerset is covered by the ban, which comes into force at midnight tonight (August 17). "Following months of unprecedented hot and dry weather, demand for water has never been higher and we need to protect our water resources, both for you and the environment," the company said in a message sent to customers on Monday. "Demand is currently 30% higher than average, and with more hot weather to come and no significant rain forecast, we’ve made the difficult decision to introduce a hosepipe ban. "It has been 50 years since water restrictions were last
introduced in the Wessex Water region. We have worked hard to avoid the need for restrictions, but introducing a hosepipe ban now is necessary as no significant rainfall has been forecast for the coming weeks." What does the hosepipe ban actually mean in Somerset? Also known as a Temporary Use Ban (TUB), a hosepipe ban "restricts the use of hosepipes for certain non-essential activities to help conserve water during periods of prolonged dry weather", the company said. When does the hosepipe ban start in Somerset? The hosepipe ban will be in place from 00.01 on Tuesday from midnight on Monday night effectively - with no end date confirmed. "At this time, we can’t confirm when restrictions will be lifted," Wessex Water said.
"We will continue to monitor reservoir levels, river flows, groundwater levels, and demand for water. We will remove the hosepipe ban as soon as we can and let you know." What am I banned from doing during a hosepipe ban? The following are prohibited while the hosepipe ban is in place: n Watering gardens, lawns, flowers and plants n Filling or maintaining paddling pools and swimming pools n Washing private vehicles n Cleaning patios, paths, driveways, walls and windows n Filling ornamental ponds or fountains n Cleaning outdoor surfaces Are there any exemptions to the hosepipe ban? People may be exempt from the hosepipe ban if they are
unable to make "reasonable adjustments due to a health condition or disability". "Using a hosepipe for health and safety needs, animal welfare and some business services and activities are also exempt from the restrictions," the firm said. A complete list of exemptions from the hosepipe ban can be found at wessexwater.co.uk/hosepipeban. The news comes after months of unusually dry weather in the UK, including a number of heatwaves that have left land parched and reservoirs struggling to maintain water levels. This week is set to see temperatures drop, according to the Met Office, but with no prolonged periods of rain forecast, Wessex Water said it had taken the decision to introduce the hosepipe ban.
Warning over wildfires after barbecue starts blaze in Taunton PEOPLE are being urged not to use disposable barbecues in the open after a fire at a Taunton green space. Firefighters from the town have posted about a blaze at Longrun Meadow on Wednesday, August 12, which saw an area of the open space
torched. In a social media post, Taunton Fire Station said the blaze was “started by a disposable barbecue”. “Our message is simple, please take great care when enjoying our beautiful countryside and open spaces.”
They advised: No BBQs in the open, no camping fires, no bonfires, no leaving glass bottles, and no discarding of cigarettes. “If you see a fire no matter how small, call 999, the ground is tinder dry and fire can spread in seconds,” they added.

New Street running club base unveiled and is hailed as "much more than a building"
A
SOMERSET running club has crossed the finish line after covering years of fundraising miles to secure a permanent home. The Strub – the new home of the Street Striders – was officially opened on Saturday (August 8) at the Victoria Club site in the town. The new hub, named through a competition completed among club members, was opened by Cllr Peter Goater, chair of Street Parish Council, and Cllr Liz Leyshon, deputy leader of Somerset Council and lead member for finance, procurement and performance. The event was led by Street Striders chair, Fee Nunn, who reflected on the remarkable journey the club has taken since it was founded in 2019. “What began as a small group of people brought together through a shared love of running and a desire to improve their health and wellbeing has grown into a thriving community,” Fee said. “Today, Street Striders has members ranging in age from 18 to 82, demonstrating that running, friendship and community spirit really do have no age limit. “For the club, running has always been about much more than miles and finish lines. Members have supported each other in improving their health, building confidence and making lasting friendships.” She said club members
Clouncillors Peter Goater and Liz Leyshon doing the honours at The Strub - the new home of the Street Striders running club
included those completing their first Couch to 5K run through to those tackling marathons and ultramarathons, with others “have simply discovered the enjoyment of being active as part of a supportive community”. “The Strub represents the fulfilment of a long-held ambition for the club. For years, Street Striders had no permanent base, often gathering in car parks whatever the weather before heading out for their runs,” she added. Now, the new hub provides a place for members to meet, celebrate achievements, welcome newcomers, plan adventures and strengthen
friendships. The project was made possible through a combination of community support, fundraising and the hard work of members and volunteers. Street Parish Council provided a vital grant, while Shapwick Runners, Ed Howells Associates Ltd and Defence Support Optimisation Ltd also provided financial support. Members themselves played a major role, notably through a remarkable 48HourRunathon in October 2024, with members running day and night to raise funds. “For Street Striders, The Strub is much more than a building,” a spokesperson
added. “It is a symbol of friendship, generosity, perseverance and community spirit; a testament to what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose. “As the club looks ahead to its next chapter, The Strub will provide a lasting home for many more miles, memories, friendships and opportunities to give back to the local community.” Street Striders meet for regular runs on Mondays and Thursdays. Anyone interested in joining them can find out more information online at www. streetstriders.co.uk, or by emailing hello@streetstriders. co.uk.

Mural trail and more to tackle town tagging
A
NEW extended mural trail is set to be created on tagging hotspots in Frome – to deter others daubing the sites with graffiti. Previously, Frome Town Council called for ideas on how to tackle problem tagging in the town, and at a meeting on August 5, approved the new steps. The new initiative will follow the example of street art programmes in places like Bristol and Wrexham, with artwork installed on surfaces often targeted for tagging and extending Frome’s network of murals, such as those at the Westway Centre and in Vallis Road. Town clerk, Peter Wheelhouse, said: “Councillors recognised that we need to look at positive, long-term solutions, as well as continuing Ranger Mike’s important work to clean
up the town centre when unwanted tagging occurs. “This project aims to improve the appearance of some of the most frequently targeted locations, and also to channel young artists’ creativity into something the whole community can enjoy. “There’s good evidence to show that this approach reduces repeated tagging, which makes the town centre unsightly and which we know is a matter of concern for many residents.” The first part of the project will see artists commissioned to transform around eight utility boxes regularly targeted for tagging into colourful pieces of public art, with an anticipated cost of £8,000. The second, more ambitious proposal will create a community street art programme, which will see street artist Tom and the School

of Graff, alongside other town artists and young people, deliver the project. FTC said the aim is to identify suitable locations for around 12 large-scale artworks, subject to the necessary permissions and conservation requirements, creating a trail of murals through the town centre. As well as brightening public spaces, the programme is intended to develop artistic
skills and confidence while providing positive creative opportunities for young people, the council said. At the meeting, councillors welcomed the proposals and said they could be an “inspiring and positive response to a longstanding issue, while building civic pride, supporting emerging artists and creating new reasons for residents and visitors to explore the town.

10% OFF The Vivary Park War Memorial is being repaired and restored
War memorial repairs
A
WAR memorial is being repaired and stabilised after upcoming VJ Day commemoration events. Work was set to begin on the structure, in Vivary Park, Taunton, on Monday (August 17), following the annual VJ Day commemoration on Saturday (August 15), marking the end of the war with Japan in 1945. Somerset Council said repair work on the 26ft-high memorial had been delayed to enable the VJ Day events to take place. The memorial, originally designed to commemorate more than 400 residents who lost their lives or were reported missing in World War One, was unveiled in 1922. Since then, it has been inscribed with names of those
lost in subsequent conflicts, including World War Two. Chair of Somerset Council, Councillor Mike Best, said it was important the memorial remain the centre of the tributes being paid at the weekend. “It is an important historic monument and close to the hearts of people in Taunton and the wider area. We must maintain it so that it can continue to play its part in Remembrance events,” he added. Work being undertaken involves stabilising the monument’s platform, with steps set to be removed before being repositioned. The memorial and surrounds will be fenced off during the work, with wreaths moved to the memorial bench near the monument.

Music came from the Frome Street Bandits

Frome becomes a play area for special national event!
F
ROME became a play area - and unveiled a revamped facility - to mark National Playday. On August 5, Frome Town Council (FTC) hosted an afternoon of play for all ages at the Key Centre as part of the National Playday 2026 celebrations. Running from 2pm to 5pm, the event was followed by the official opening of the improved play area at Tower View park, with a free picnic provided for children. Attractions on the day included cyanotype printing
with Caravan Arts, skate lessons for all ages from Soulful Skate Co and bike ramp-building with Super Roots. Guests took home willow dragonflies made with artist Mary Cross, danced to live music by Frome Street Bandits and helped create a brand new Key Centre board game. There was also a stay and play with Purple Elephant, a ‘board game bonanza’ and free refreshments all day, including a lot of cake. Mayor of Frome, Mark Dorrington, said: “It was lovely to see everyone having such a
great time and to open the play space extension, designed and built in consultation with the community. “The Key Centre is a fantastic addition to the town council’s offer for the community and that was certainly in evidence in the great turnout and atmosphere. Many thanks to everyone involved.” The Key Centre is in Feltham Lane, in the Mount area of

Wessex devolution moves a step closer
D
EVOLUTION for Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole could be moving closer. Authorities for those areas, who have joined forces to represent a proposed new mayoral strategic authority in the form of a Wessex organisation, have been “invited to express interest” in the move by the Government. It comes after an initial submission for the creation of the new authority was overlooked by government chiefs. If approved, the move would see the authorities become part of a wider, strategic body, including a mayor – which the government says would unlock extra funding and decisionmaking opportunities. Responding to the fresh invitation, the leaders of Dorset, BCP, Somerset and Wiltshire Councils – Cllr Nick Ireland, Cllr Millie Earl, Cllr Bill Revans, and Cllr Ian Thorn respectively – have issued a joint statement. They said: “We have been clear Wessex is ready and uniquely placed to move forward with a Mayoral Strategic Authority, and we welcome the Government’s invitation to
express an interest as the next step in securing devolution for our region. “This is an exciting and once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring decisions closer to local people, unlock investment and drive long-term prosperity to every postcode across Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. “As the only fully unitary
area in England without a devolution arrangement, we already operate at the scale required and, with no need for local government reorganisation, we are ready to realise the benefits of devolution from day one. “A Mayoral Strategic Authority has always been our aim as it would give Wessex the powers and funding that local leaders need to improve
transport, housing, skills, infrastructure and lasting economic growth, while strengthening our contribution to the national economy. “The case for Wessex is clear. We are united in our ambition and ready to seize this opportunity. We are committed to working with Government to secure a devolution agreement that matches the scale and ambition of our potential.”
Bridgwater police worker misused system A BRIDGWATER-BASED police worker who used force computer systems to search a number of individuals – including herself – has pleaded guilty to a number of charges. Laura Dean, who worked at Bridgwater Police Centre, admitted 11 counts of computer misuse when she appeared before Exeter Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, August 12. The court heard Dean used a police computer system to carry out searches on a number of individuals, including herself. None of the illegal searches Dean made related to victims of crime she had contact with in a professional capacity. The 33-year-old was released on unconditional bail and will be sentenced on September 16.
Dean resigned from her role at Avon and Somerset Police in September 2025. A separate misconduct process has been running alongside the criminal investigation and will continue following Dean’s conviction. After the hearing, Detective Superintendent Larisa Hunt, head of the Avon & Somerset Police Professional Standards Department, said: “The computer system Laura Dean accessed is used to record crime reports, intelligence and other highly sensitive information and she was permitted to use it as part of her day-to-day work. “Employees receive training around the need to only use this system when there is a policing purpose.
"Before the programme opens, officers and staff must consent and acknowledge that they can only use the software when there is a valid policing need. “Dean ignored those warnings and used the system repeatedly for searches which she clearly knew were inappropriate. "Her actions were deliberate and in no way accidental. “The public place trust in the police and expect their data to be only accessed when required. “It is for that reason we have taken these offences so seriously and our Professional Standards Department primarily conducted this as a criminal investigation, with further misconduct proceedings to potentially follow too.”

The GTH teams raised a huge £13,000 for the charities

Auctioneers going, going, gone for charity!
S
OMERSET auctioneers took to the roads in unusual style to raise a whopping £13,000 to improve cancer screening. The gavel-holding group, from Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s (GTH) Sedgemoor Auction Centre, near Bridgwater, raised funds for two cancer charities during a frantic 12-hour trip. Setting off from their Somerset base with just £20, teams of two attempted to get as far as they could – with their endeavours involving a wacky
range of transport options. Teams reached Braemar, Preston, Edinburgh, Dundee and London as they travelled by ice cream van, skis, shopping trolley, horse and bike to name a few, as part of their charity trips. The challenge came after all 10 participants have witnessed the effects of a cancer diagnosis close up, with money raised going to cancer support charity Macmillan and to the Derek Mead Health Room at the North Petherton auction centre, which supports and screens farmers
attending the regular markets. “We are thrilled to have raised so much money for Macmillan, which supports people living with cancer, and for the Derek Mead Health Room, which supports farmers at the market,” said Andy Clements, one of the fundraiser organisers. “We are particularly focused on enabling them to put on further cancer screening days at Sedgemoor.” The teams comprised: Andy Clements and Russell Thomas,
Paul Ashton and Rob Stone, Tom Mellor and Rob Baker, Ryan Doble and Jamie Batt, and James Wotton and Osian Richards. Andy Clements and Russell Thomas, Tom Mellor and Rob Baker managed to reach Scotland on their epic journeys during the challenge. Simon Havens, GTH Chairman, said: “This was a brilliant initiative and effort from all five teams. "The money raised for two charities is outstanding.”
Housebuilder hands over £2,000 to rugby club's gym fundraiser CASTLE Cary Rugby Club’s bid for a new gym has received a weighty lift thanks to a donation from a developer. Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, the developer behind the new Tor View scheme in the town, has donated £2,000 to the club as part fundraising efforts. Greg Power, chairman of Castle Cary RFC, said: “We are so grateful to Persimmon for once again supporting us as a local sports club in Castle Cary, especially as we have a specific
goal for our fundraising project that we are now nearer to accomplishing than before thanks to their donation.” The club, established in 1888, has youth teams serving local children aged four to 16, as well as a senior side and is seeking funding for new gym equipment, as much of those being used by its players are at the end of their life. Among them was Persimmon’s Community Champions programme, which
handed over £2,000. Persimmon Homes Severn Valley sales director, Carly Spear, said: “We are very excited to have started work at Tor View, with our first plots now available for purchase in Castle Cary.
“As part of Persimmon’s commitment to leaving a positive and lasting legacy wherever we build, we heard the calls for assistance from our friends at the rugby club and were delighted we could help them out in their fundraising quest. I would encourage other businesses that can to help the club so they can get the equipment they need to continue being a community club loved by those in and around the village.”

Could new repair method solve pothole woes?
A
ROAD in the centre of a Somerset town is being used as a test bed for innovative new ways to prevent and repair potholes and other surface defects. North Somerset Council’s Highways Team has been trialling a treatment that could help extend the life of road surfaces and prevent potholes from developing. The trial, on a section of Walliscote Grove Road, outside of the entrance to Weston-superMare Library, was installed on Thursday and Friday, July 30 and 31, with the council working with specialist contractor Multi Contracting Services Ltd. Walliscote Grove Road was picked as it had a mix of cracks and small potholes along its length, providing the right mix of defects to test the product fully in one place. The company installed its multi mastic surfacing repair product, which is designed to seal cracks, joints and minor defects before they develop into more significant issues. The trial covered 196 square metres of road and will help the highways team assess how effective the treatment is and whether it could play a wider role in the council’s highways maintenance and improvement projects. It is suitable for use on both concrete and bitumen road surfaces, and can be used for joint infill and overbanding, crack sealing and pothole repairs. The company said a key advantage to the technique is speed, with treated areas ready to reopen to traffic in as little as five minutes – helping minimise disruption for road users, residents and businesses.
“Unlike traditional repair methods, the process requires no excavation, meaning no parts of the road needed to be dug up, removed from site and replaced with new asphalt,” a council spokesperson said. “The technique also produces zero dust, low noise levels and no vibration, dramatically reducing the impact of works on nearby residents and businesses. “In addition, the contractor estimates that the treatment generates up to 90% lower carbon emissions than conventional repair methods, while also improving safety for road workers by removing the need for heavy cutting and breaking equipment.” The treatment is not designed to address underlying structural defects, but can help protect road surfaces from further deterioration by preventing water ingress and seal vulnerable areas before significant damage could occur, they went on. The multi mastic surfacing repair process involves: Sweeping loose material from the defective area Filling deeper areas with asphalt where required Heating Elastomac material to around 200 degrees celsius Applying the material directly onto the road surface Spreading and levelling it using hand tools Applying a layer of bauxite grit to provide a durable finish Cllr Mike Bell, leader of NSC, said: “Residents rightly expect us to look after our roads in a way that delivers the best possible value for money while also reducing environmental impacts wherever we can. “This trial is a good example of how we are exploring innovative techniques that could

help us maintain our highway network more efficiently. As well as offering the potential to slow road deterioration and reduce the likelihood of potholes forming, this treatment can be applied quickly, creates significantly lower carbon emissions and avoids large amounts of waste material being removed and replaced. “If the trial proves successful, it could become another useful tool in helping us keep North Somerset moving while minimising disruption for
our communities.” Cllr Hugh Malyan, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “While it isn’t a structural repair solution, it could become a useful addition to our preventative maintenance activities by helping to protect road surfaces and reduce the conditions that can lead to potholes." And Lee Merces, managing director for Multi Contracting Services Ltd, added: “We are excited to be working with North Somerset Council on this trial and demonstrating how multi mastic repairs can support a proactive approach to highway maintenance, and look forward to reviewing the results later down the line.” The results of the trial will be reviewed by the council’s highways team to help determine whether the product could be more widely used.

Could you become a foster carer for pets in need - or help lovely Daisy? by JACQUI BUDD St Giles Animal Welfare Centre
D
O you have a space in your home to provide temporary care and accommodation for a dog or cat? Many of the animals who arrive in rescue centres find the busy kennel environment stressful; it can be quite noisy too. Foster carers are integral to the running of rescue centres. They provide temporary homes to both dogs and cats. Some animals have never experienced loving homes. Being in a home environment gives them the opportunity to adjust and decompress. It helps them learn to trust humans and realise they are safe in their presence. If an animal has undergone veterinary treatment prior to adoption it needs a calm and peaceful environment in which to recover. Often pregnant cats arrive at the centre. Fosterers allow them a quiet space to continue their pregnancy and give birth to their kittens. All expenses are paid by the

centre, so caring costs nothing. Could you become a much needed foster carer ? For more information and application form see stgilesanimalwelfare. co.uk/fostering. Daisie is a lovely girl who was brought into the Centre heavily pregnant, and fortunately found a foster home to give birth. Her kittens have
all found new homes, and now Daisie is looking for one of her very own. She is a lovely girl who has come out of her shell a lot since being in her foster home and has shown she is ready for a home of her own. She enjoys the company of people and likes to have a fuss made of her, but also likes her own space when
she needs to rest. She would love to find a new home where she can spend her days snoozing in the sun. Daisie would be best suited as the only pet in the home. She could live with children aged 10 or above. n Can you give Daisie a new loving home? Visit stgilesanimalwelfare.co.uk/ adoptions/daisie.
Second dog suffers adder bite during walk A SECOND dog owner has urged people to be on the lookout for adders after their pet was bitten near Street. The owner said their dog was walking in Combe Hill Woods when it suddenly let out a "high-pitched yelp" and lay down, "panting heavily", unable to stand. "Initially, we thought it was a twisted leg, but he became extremely lethargic over the next few hours and couldn't stand," they went on. "Langport Vets confirmed it was an adder bite."
The incident is the second in the Langport and Street area in recent weeks, with the vets urging people to be aware of the hazard when out walking. Langport & Street Vets previously issued a warning over the dangers of snake bites. “Please take care when walking around Langport,” a spokesperson said. “We have seen a patient this week who we believe was bitten by an adder when walking along the river by Black Bridge. “Please take extra caution.”

'We need far greater water investment'
A
S I embark on my advice surgery summer tour across the Glastonbury and Somerton constituency, I am being greeted by the same troubling sights wherever I go: vast swathes of farmland parched by drought, scorched verges and dry grassland. We have already seen multiple fires across the country, which act as a brutal reminder of how quickly a small spark can become an emergency. This summer, Somerset has endured extreme heat, with amber heat-health warnings, drought conditions and extreme temperatures showing how exposed our county is to a changing climate. Yet it has taken five heatwaves for the Government to call a Cobra meeting. While I recognise that Andy Burnham has only recently taken office as Prime Minister, the warning
by Sarah Dyke Lib Dem MP for Glastonbury & Somerton signs have been impossible to miss. The Government is travelling at a snail's pace and Ministers should have moved much earlier to prepare communities, and public services for increasingly extreme summers. Heatwaves are not simply an inconvenience. They put older and vulnerable people at risk, place additional pressure on our NHS and increase the danger of wildfires. That is why I have been calling for greater investment in fire ponds, reservoirs and other nature-based solutions to slow the flow of flood water and ensure it is available in times of need. In rural areas, where firefighters may be some distance from the nearest
hydrant, these water sources can provide vital support while also helping farms manage drought and supporting wildlife. The impact on our food security also concerns me deeply. I have spoken to farmers who are already burning through winter feed stocks simply to keep their animals fed because grass growth has slowed so dramatically. After an exceptionally dry spring and summer, many now face the prospect of entering winter with depleted supplies and yet more costs, the impact of which will be felt by consumers at the supermarket tills. Our farmers are on the frontline of climate change. During winter they are dealing with flooded fields and prolonged heat and drought during the summer. That is why my Good Food Bill calls for proper investment in British
farming and a long-term approach to food security. We need to help farmers adapt, improve water resilience and continue producing the food we rely on. The Government needs to move faster. Britain urgently needs a national climate resilience strategy that joins up our response to heat, drought, wildfire and flooding, rather than waiting for each emergency to arrive before acting. Somerset's communities, farmers and emergency services deserve preparation, investment and leadership. As always, I want to hear from you. If you would like to share your views, have an issue I can help with, or wish to register your interest to attend one of my regular advice surgeries, please don’t hesitate to contact me on sarah.dyke. mp@parliament.uk.
Concerned over children's SEND services
I
HAVE written to His Majesty’s Chief Inspector at Ofsted asking for an urgent inspection of Somerset Council’s services for young people with special educational needs and disabilities. I have taken this step because I am increasingly concerned about the experiences being reported to me by families across my constituency, including here in North Petherton, and by Somerset Council’s own assessment of its performance. For those who may not be familiar with the terminology, special educational needs and disabilities, commonly known as SEND, covers a wide range of additional needs that can affect a child’s ability to learn or take part fully in school life. Some children may need relatively small adjustments in the classroom, while others require much more substantial or specialist support.
by Sir Ashley Fox Conservative MP for Bridgwater For children with more complex needs, one of the most important forms of support is an Education, Health and Care Plan, usually called an EHCP. This is a legal document setting out a child’s needs and the education, health and care support that must be provided to them. Over recent months, I have heard from parents and carers who have faced long delays, poor communication and considerable frustration trying to secure this support. When a child may need an EHCP, there is a legal process for assessing their needs. Where the council agrees that a plan is required, the whole process should normally be completed within 20 weeks. In Somerset, the average completion time has instead reached 51 weeks, almost a full year.
I recognise that councils across the country are facing increasing demand for support for children with special educational needs and disabilities. However, the scale of the problem in Somerset cannot simply be explained as a national issue. While Somerset has completed fewer than 3% of Education, Health and Care Plans within the legal 20-week deadline since January, neighbouring North Somerset achieved 95% within the deadline during one recent reporting period. Somerset Council itself acknowledges that it is “one of the most poorly performing Local Authorities in England” for completing these plans on time. The problem here is Somerset Council, not the system. That is why I have asked Ofsted, the independent body responsible for inspecting
education and children’s services, to bring forward its next inspection of Somerset’s SEND services and undertake it as a matter of priority. My concern is heightened by the wider deterioration in Somerset Council’s children’s services. Earlier this year, Ofsted inspected the services responsible for supporting children and young people and downgraded the Council from ‘Good’ to ‘Requires Improvement’ in the majority of its judgements. I want to hear directly from local families. If your child has been affected by delays, poor communication or difficulties getting the SEND support they need, please complete my short Somerset SEND Experiences survey at ashleyfox.org.uk/ somerset-send-experience. Your experiences will help me continue pressing for the improvements young people and families deserve.

UNDREDS of votes have been counted – and the films to be screened at an open-air cinema event in Bridgwater next month have been selected. Almost 600 votes were cast by member sof the public to decide which movies will be screened at the event, on St Matthew’s Field, on Saturday, September 12. And the public chose Sing and The Greatest Showman for the event, Bridgwater Town Council said. “Stay tuned for more event
details coming soon including timings, parking information and some special announcements,” a spokesperson added. For several weeks, cinema goers were given the chance to vote for two films they wanted to see shown on the big screen on September 12, ranging from the likes of 80s family favourite, The Goonies, Encanto, Frozen and classic musicals Mamma Mia! and Grease. But it was musical favourites The Greatest Showman and Sing that came out on top.

PECIAL shoes – and the stories behind them – are being sought for a special display to mark 12 months since the opening of the Shoemakers Museum in Street. The attraction, at The Grange, Clarks Village, is calling on Somerset folks to share the stories behind their shoes ahead of its first anniversary, on August 31. Museum staff hope to use the dozen special pairs to highlight the people, stories and craftsmanship behind the area’s rich footwear heritage in a 12 Shoes. 12 Stories display. And a spokesperson said they were looking for “a dozen pairs of shoes with a personal story to tell – from wedding shoes and first school shoes to football boots, work boots, wellies or a much-loved pair that has travelled the world”. Rosie Martin, director at Shoemakers Museum, said: “Shoes can hold so many

memories, and we know there must be some wonderful stories sitting in wardrobes and cupboards across Street and Somerset. “They don’t need to be old, rare or valuable – we’re interested in what they mean to the person who wore them. “We’d love the local people of Street to get involved and help us share 12 very different stories for our first birthday.” People can submit their shoes and stories by emailing hello@ shoemakersmuseum.org.uk by Thursday, August 20. Submissions should include a photograph of the shoes and a brief explanation of the story behind them.

Open chapel LANGPORT’S historic Hanging Chapel will open to the public later this month. The 13th-century landmark will open its doors from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, August 29, giving people the chance to discover what organisers call “Somerset’s hidden gem”. People turning out for the free event can find out more about the history of the chapel, as well as taking in the views from the structure. The Grade I-listed building and scheduled ancient monument originally formed part of the town’s medieval east gate defences, built on the earthworks of a Saxon bank surrounding the town. While the gateway arch dates to the 13th century, the chapel structure above mostly reflects 15th-century alterations.

Green Flag joy for outlet centre
A
N OUTLET shopping centre is not usually somewhere you would expect to find a Green Flag Award-winning green space. But that is the case at Clarks Village, in Street, where the venue’s gardens have been recognised with the prestigious accolade – an international quality mark for parks and green spaces. The award-winning landscaping was recognised for well-maintained gardens, parklets, a wildflower meadow, native hedgerows, ornamental shrubs and climbing plants, reflecting the outlet’s “long-term commitment to biodiversity and sustainability”. Over the past year, Clarks Village has planted hundreds of new plants, shrubs and flowers across the site, including a new 220-metre native hedge and meadow to encourage wildlife, support pollinators and capture
carbon, as well as introducing a new solitary bee hotel and two new bee hives. The site’s mature trees are carefully managed through a maintenance plan to protect them for future generations; such as facilitating the root growth of its 130-year oak tree as it ‘stretches its legs’. Meanwhile, Clarks Village said it is working to continue reducing its environmental impact, recycling 79% of its on-site waste, sending zero waste to landfill, and using 100% renewable electricity, with solar PV panels on its rooftops. Mike Jones, centre director, said: “With beautiful gardens and a relaxed outdoor setting,
Clarks Village is no ordinary shopping destination. We believe our green spaces are just as important as the brands we offer, creating an environment where guests can relax, spend time together and enjoy their visit. “We’re proud of the ongoing investment in our gardens and biodiversity, and it’s fantastic to be recognised with a prestigious Green Flag Award.” Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award manager at Keep Britain Tidy, added: ”Parks are essential public spaces that support our wellbeing, our communities and our economy. Clarks Village has shown what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed. “As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like this that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard.”

Prime Minister says farmers 'should not be carrying risk of climate change alone'
T
HE Prime Minister has announced a package of support for farmers to help them manage the impacts of this summer's recordbreaking low rainfall and high temperatures, saying they should not carry the burden of a changing climate alone. Andy Burnham and farming minister, Stephen Morgan, made the announcements during a visit to a farm in Cornwall over the weekend. They said heatwaves and below-average rainfall have increased pressure on water resources for agricultural production and Environmental Land Management (ELM) scheme activities. Dry conditions and heat have also increased the risk of wildfires across many parts of the country, "creating real

challenges for farmers". On August 12, the PM chaired the government’s emergency response committee (COBR) on extreme heat, wildfires and drought and has unveiled measures to "help farmers manage drought pressures, protect crops and strengthen resilience for the future". The Prime Minister said: "I am meeting with farmers here in the South West who brought in the earliest harvest of their working lives and watched the yield come in well down on what it should be. Lower income, higher costs, and no rain in the forecast. I understand the worry that comes with that. "The ability to grow our own food is national security, and I will treat it that way. So we are acting now: more money into

farm support, help to get reservoirs built, and easier access to water when it is scarce. "This is the third drought in five years. Farmers are at the sharp end of a changing climate, and they should not be carrying that risk alone."
helping farmers store water and become more resilient to future droughts. n Improved access to water during drought conditions, including that the Environment Agency will prioritise requests for short term variations to abstraction licence conditions.
New measures include: n Temporary adjustments to Environmental Land Management (ELM) agreements, so farmers affected by drought can continue to receive payments and take practical steps to protect livestock, crops and land. n An extra £50 million for Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026 Window 2, taking the total budget for SFI26 to £290 million to help more farmers access support. Increased SFI uptake will help farmers to adapt to the risk of future droughts. n Action to make it easier to build reservoirs, including reducing unnecessary barriers and updating planning guidance. n Funding up to £15 million to build on-farm reservoirs,
"We're committed to working with farmers to improve the resilience of on-farm water supplies. This includes making sure the right planning and abstraction licensing arrangements are in place so farmers can invest with confidence," a spokesperson said. "We'll continue to monitor the situation closely and work with the farming and water sectors. If needed, we'll take further action to help farmers manage the impacts of drought." n For full details on the announcements and how to get involved, visit the Government's Farming Blog at https:// defrafarming.blog.gov. uk/2026/08/15/new-droughtsupport-for-farmers.
