Historic items back after childhood theft!

A

MISCHIEVOUS childhood theft from a historic Somerset site has been resolved – seven decades later. In 1956, schoolboy George Box was visiting Glastonbury Abbey when he took a shine to two objects – and pocketed them. The youngster took home with him two unusual objects not usually the target of thieves – a medieval floor tile and a kneecap, taken from an opened tomb! George held on to them for the rest of his life – even taking them with him when he emigrated to Australia in the 1970s. “As a child, George never told anyone what he had done,” an Abbey spokesperson said. “In Australia, he carefully displayed them in a glass cabinet with fossils and other interesting items – he’d had a

lifelong interest in archaeology.” However, clearly keen to make amends for his antics, before he passed away last year, George said the items should be returned, and even crafted a special box for them to make the 9,000-mile journey back to Somerset. So, the Abbey was later contacted by George’s widow, who said she was travelling to Somerset to scatter her husband’s ashes at Brent Knoll, where he grew up, and was hoping to return the items. And this summer, she did just that. “Both items were returned on the anniversary of his passing, and are now back in the care of the abbey’s museum department,” the spokesperson went on. “The abbey is very grateful for their return, and to have learnt their fascinating story.” “Some of Glastonbury

George, above with the box he made for the items, and far right, aged 13 with his father

Abbey’s treasures have travelled far since the Dissolution – but few have experienced a journey quite like this,” a spokesperson went on. “Astonishingly, it’s thought that the kneecap in question

dates back to the 13th century and once belonged to an Abbot of Glastonbury,” they added. “The kneecap and floor tile can now be viewed in the abbey’s Museum, where they have been placed on display.”

Former neo-Nazi activist selected - then stands down - from Conservative party list

T

HE leader of the Conservative group in Somerset has spoken out about the saga surrounding the controversial selection of a podcaster and convicted neo-Nazi to stand in next year’s county elections. The Tories’ pick of Joshua Bonehill-Paine to stand for Crewkerne South at next year’s polls drew condemnation from political leaders, including Somerset MP Anna Sabine. Bonehill-Paine, who previously described himself as a “nationalist, fascist, theorist and supporter of white rights”, was convicted of malicious communications in 2014 over an Islamophobic hoax that led to pub owners in Leicester receiving death threats. The Guardian has also reported Bonehill-Paine has a conviction for assaulting a police officer and burglary of a police station. In 2015, he was jailed for posting antisemitic material ahead of a neo-Nazi rally, and in 2016 was found guilty of directing racially-aggravated harassment after abusing then-Labour MP, Luciana Berger, who is Jewish. The controversial content creator has since claimed he abandoned his extremist views after reading the Bible while in prison. The furore over his selection – which Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch was an indication of the party being willing to give people a second chance – ended in BonehillPaine standing down on August 5. Somerset MP Anna Sabine, who represents Frome & East Somerset, said she was "genuinely shocked and deeply disappointed" by the controversy. "I believe strongly in rehabilitation and that people can change, but that cannot be

Leader of the Somerset Council Conservative group, Diogo Rodrigues, inset, has defended the move to select Joshua BonehillPaine

confused with the responsibility political parties have when choosing who they put forward to represent them," she went on. "Standing as an elected representative is a position of trust. Political parties have a duty to select candidates who command the confidence of the public and reflect the values they claim to stand for." And a Reform UK spokesperson said: "Kemi claims the Tories have changed and they will have a new generation of candidates – it’s now clear what calibre of candidates they will be. "Kemi claims to support the fight against antisemitism yet selects a convicted antisemite Nazi as a candidate. The hypocrisy is breathtaking." Now, Diogo Rodrigues, a Bridgwater councillor and leader of Somerset Council’s Conservative group, has spoken out about the matter. His full statement said: “What Joshua Bonehill-Paine did was abhorrent, appalling and completely indefensible. His antisemitism caused profound harm, and nothing he does today can erase that past. “Joshua was convicted, imprisoned and deservedly punished. Since leaving prison, however, he has expressed deep remorse and spent several years

working to counter the hatred he once promoted. He has delivered training on antisemitism, extremism and radicalisation to police officers, Prevent professionals, universities, schools, probation services and social services. “He has also worked directly with people vulnerable to extremist ideologies, using his own experience to warn them away from that destructive path. “The Campaign Against Antisemitism, which played a role in ensuring Joshua was brought to justice, has said: “We do not know what is in his heart but we do know that in recent years he has gone to considerable lengths to educate against antisemitism. If someone works hard to counter the anti-Jewish hatred that they once sought to spread, we should all consider that a success, so we are keeping an open mind”. “I firmly believe in rehabilitation. Rehabilitation does not mean forgetting the seriousness of someone’s crimes or dismissing the pain of their victims. It means examining whether someone has accepted responsibility, changed their conduct and spent a sustained period trying to repair the damage they caused. “This is deeply personal to

me. I left the Labour Party years ago partly because I did not believe it was taking antisemitism seriously enough. Through my husband and his family, the history and experiences of Jewish people are part of my own family. I feel incredibly strongly about standing up for Jewish people and confronting antisemitism. “I would never knowingly allow anyone who currently held antisemitic, racist or extremist views to sit alongside me or be associated with the Conservative Group I lead. “Joshua has now withdrawn as a candidate, saying that more work is needed to rebuild trust with the Jewish community. I respect that decision. “As Kemi Badenoch has said, tackling extremism will sometimes require the help of people who were once part of the problem, but who have genuinely changed and are now committed to being part of the solution. “We must never compromise in the fight against antisemitism. But where someone has genuinely changed, shown remorse and devoted themselves to tackling the hatred they once promoted, we should be prepared to recognise the contribution they can make to preventing others from

Licensing clock-up delays restoration bid

W

ORK to repair a historic town-centre clock in Langport has been called off – due to an administrative 'clock-up'! The octagonal clock on Langport Town Hall – installed close to 150 years ago – has been out of action since the hands gave up on May 12 last year. However, determined fundraising efforts by the Landmark Langport group saw preparations being made for the repair to be carried out by specialist firm, Cumbria Clock Company Ltd, coinciding with the recent Bow Street closure. But Landmark Langport confirmed due to a last-minute mix up over licensing and omissions by the scaffolding company, Somerset Highways declined permission for the structure to go up – and the work was cancelled. Now, the group is facing another fundraising effort in order to get the work done – and the clock ticking over once again. “We are a tiny charity, run by volunteer trustees who give considerable time freely and willingly, together with our part-time administrator Madi,

gardener Greg and cleaner Pete. That’s it,” said a Landmark Langport spokesperson. “We have been working hard to rectify the situation – months of careful planning and organisation, negotiating with councils, heritage bodies, insurance companies, agencies, builders and consultants, and the ever-wonderful Cumbria Clock Company Ltd, who are the only people who can fix this, and are doing so at their cost.” The clock, installed in 1883, was made by London-based JW Benson Ltd, with a plaque on

the mechanism proudly stating the firm was ‘clockmaker to the Queen and Prince of Wales’. But despite the group raising the necessary funds for the repair, and arranging for the ‘full-facia’ scaffolding to go up during the work in Bow Street to repair broadband connectivity, things went awry. “Unfortunately, licencing errors and omissions by the scaffolding contractors meant that Somerset Highways Agency declined permission to erect the scaffolding at the last minute,” the spokesperson went

on. "This meant we had to call a halt to the works at the weekend, inconveniencing numerous people severely, and costing us a great deal of money that we simply don’t have. “We will now have to start again, and raise several thousands of pounds more to cover the additional traffic management costs etc.” Landmark Langport also responded to comments regarding the delay to repairs, and added: “There have been some negative comments on social media about the delay to fixing the clock, and so we wanted to explain that actually, a lot of people have worked very hard to resolve this, only to be failed by others at the crucial time we needed them. “We would also like to say that if you do have strong feelings and/or ideas about this, we are keen to have more volunteers to help us with the workload – we would really welcome your time and thoughts, so do get in touch.” n For more details on Landmark Langport – and how you can get involved – email admin@landmarklangport.org. uk.

Work set to begin on new road crossing A RAISED crossing is set to be installed across a busy Bridgwater road – which has long been called for by residents. Official notice has been given by Somerset Council of its intent to install the crossing in The Leggar, on the Bridgwater Retail Park, between the Sainsbury’s car park and the likes of Costa and M&S Food, across the road. It means work is set to begin in the coming months to “construct a Road Hump on The Leggar, Bridgwater”. Somerset Councillor Leigh Redman welcomed confirmation

of the long-awaited crossing point and said it would also act as a traffic-slowing measure. “This is a real win for residents who never stopped raising concerns,” Cllr Redman said. “The community has been clear about the risks at this location, and I am pleased that their voices have been heard. “For too long people have faced fast moving traffic with no safe option, and this raised crossing will finally put that right. I want to thank everyone who kept pushing for change. Your persistence has delivered a safer environment for local people.”

Bid for funding to reopen road to vehicles

A

BID for funding for a multi-million pound scheme to reopen a West Somerset road - closed for more than three years - has been submitted. Somerset Council has handed in a bid to central Government to enable work on a plan to reopen the B3191 Cleeve Hill, near Watchet, which closed in January 2023 after cliff movement near the road was detected. While a geotechnical survey recommended it be kept closed to ensure the safety of the travelling public, it was later deemed safe for cyclists and pedestrians – but has been closed to cars, vans, motorcycles and lorries ever since. It leaves visitors and residents with just one route in and out of Watchet – across a 150-year-old bridge. Plans have been vaunted to bring the road back into use for vehicles, but would cost an estimated £40 million. Now, the council has submitted a bid to the Government’s Structures Fund for a “significant contribution” to the costs – subject to further detailed design work – which

Somerset Council has asked the government for financial support to help sort the B3191 Picture: Somerset Council

would reinstate the B3191, either by making the existing route safe for vehicles or by redirecting the route further inland. As a secondary ask, the council is also seeking funding to deal with embankment failures on the A371 at Ansford, near Castle Cary. Lead member for highways and transport at Somerset Council, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said: “There is of course no guarantee that we will be successful, but we must remain optimistic. Securing this funding is competitive, local authorities from across the country will be bidding for a portion of it.

“This has the support of all the local councillors and the local MP, Rachel Gilmour (Lib Dm, Minehead & Tiverton), as well as many other stakeholders and businesses. “It is the first real chance we have had to find a way to reinstate this vital route for the community since it closed in 2023. “We will be pushing hard for this funding, as we have been doing so from the start. We know the impact on the community of only having one road into Watchet, and the potential impact on the West Somerset traffic that has to take long diversions if the A39 has to close due to an incident.

“We consulted our communities about the ongoing closure and they told us that it is having a major effect on the economy of Watchet including the cost to the local economy and the inconvenience in terms of hours lost in delays, the logistics of coping with delivering goods to and from Minehead as well as the negative effects on tourism.” Full details of the Structures Fund bid can be seen online at somerset.gov.uk/roads-traveland-parking/the-structures-fund, while the 2023 closure report can be seen on the Somerset Council Transport policy page at somerset.gov.uk/roads-traveland-parking/transport-policy.

Former scout leader jailed for child abuse

F

ORMER Scout leader Matt Ellett has been found guilty of sexual offences against children carried out while in the role. Ellett, from Taunton, stood trial after being charged with 19 offences against five children, with a jury at Taunton Crown Court, sitting in North Somerset, returning a unanimous guilty verdict on all counts on Wednesday, August 5. The court heard how the 32-year-old befriended his victims through his voluntary work, but then went onto sexually abuse them. The jury found Matt Ellett, of Taunton, guilty of the following offences relating to five children: Five counts of sexual activity with a child under 16. Two counts of causing or inciting a child under 16 to engage in sexual activity. Five counts of sexual assault of a child under 13. Three counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity.

Two counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity. Three counts of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child under 13. Assault of a child under 13 by penetration. After the verdict, DS Phil Hockey of Avon & Somerset Police, said: "Matt Ellett was a popular volunteer within the scouting movement. Many of the children’s parents believed he was a positive influence on the youngsters’ lives. "The outward character Ellett portrayed though acted as a way for him to earn a position of trust, which he exploited for his own horrific sexual gratification. "He has never admitted to what he did and this trial has been incredibly difficult for all those giving and listening to the evidence. "The victims who came forward have shown incredible courage from start to finish. These verdicts do not undo or reduce the enormous pain Ellett caused them and their families,

Former scout leader Mark Ellett, from Taunton, abused children Picture: Avon & Somerset Police

but we sincerely hope they provide some relief to all those affected by his crimes." Ellett was remanded into custody and will be sentenced on October 5 at the same court. DS Hockey added: "We know reporting non-recent sexual offences is a really big step for anyone. "We hope that convictions for sexual offenders like Ellett give victims the confidence to

come forward, because it doesn’t matter if the offence happened yesterday or 20 years ago, that person will be believed and the crime investigated." Help is available for victims of rape or sexual assault, recent or non-recent. People can self-refer to The Bridge, a Sexual Assault Referral Centre available 24/7 365 days a year. Special event honours hundreds of young Somerset people for their achievements

H

UNDREDS of young people were celebrated at a special event to recognise the achievements of looked-after children and care-experienced people. More than 570 young people were recognised at Somerset Council’s annual Celebrating Care and Achievement event, at the Wellsprings Leisure Centre in Taunton. Children, young people, carers, families and professionals united for an afternoon “dedicated to recognising the determination, resilience, talent and achievements of young people across Somerset”. Previously known as the Annual Achievement Awards, the event was refreshed this year to place a greater focus on celebrating all children looked after and care experienced young people. Attendance was also opened up so that more young people, families, carers and supporters could come together and share in the celebrations. The day featured a range of

activities, including face painting, a silent disco, balloon modelling, a photo booth, planting activities and opportunities to meet organisations including Route1 Advocacy and the RSPCA. The event was hosted by members of Somerset’s in Care Council (SiCC) and Somerset’s Leaving Care Council (SLCC), alongside Somerset Council’s Engagement and Participation Team who helped plan and deliver the celebrations. Leah, a member of SiCC and SLCC, helped organise the event and said: “We really care about each other, and today is about all of us. We celebrate everyone’s achievements and progress, and I hope everyone attending goes away feeling happy and proud.” Paul Mitchell, senior partnership engagement officer at Somerset Council, said: “SiCC and SLCC do this voluntarily, and they work really hard to deliver a special day for our young people. They continue to inspire us, as do all of the remarkable children and

young people recognised today.” Ahead of the event, children and young people were nominated for awards by social workers, foster carers, leaving care workers, schools and other Children’s Services professionals. This year, a record number of nominations were received, Somerset Council said, adding how each nomination “highlighted the progress, determination, kindness and personal achievements of Somerset’s children and young people”. After a panel reviewed anonymised nominations, winners were selected, including recognition for teachers, workers and carers who have made a positive difference. Councillor Heather Shearer, Somerset Council lead member for children, families and education, added: “This event is one of the highlights of the year. It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements, talents and resilience of

Somerset’s children looked after and care experienced young people. “Every nomination tells a story of determination, courage and personal growth. We are incredibly proud of all the young people commended today, and grateful to the carers, families, schools, workers and supporters who help them achieve their potential.” To find out more about supporting a vulnerable young person as a foster carer, visit www.fosteringinsomerset.org. uk. CCTV appeal in fraud probe

NEWSinBRIEF

Helping tackle baa-d behaviour

P

OLICE are keen to trace this person in connection with a fraud probe after an incident near Taunton. Officers are keen to speak to the man pictured as part of a fraud investigation in Norton Fitzwarren. Avon & Somerset Police said that at around 9.30am on Friday, April 24, a seller arranged to meet a man after advertising computer equipment for sale on Facebook Marketplace. "The buyer provided false payment details and claimed the transaction had been completed," a police spokesperson said. "No money was received before he left with a computer graphics card, a mobile phone and a laptop. "Our enquiries indicate two similar offences, one in Bath and one in the Weston-superMare area, took place the previous day using the same method." A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the investigation, interviewed and released on police bail while enquiries continue. "Following a number of enquiries, we are now releasing an image of a man we would like to identify as we believe he may have information that could assist our investigation," police went on.

Officers are keen to identify this person

"The man pictured is described as white, of stocky build and aged between 20 and 25 years old." Police have urged people buying or selling items through online marketplaces to always take steps to protect themselves from fraud. The spokesperson added: "Never rely solely on screenshots or payment

confirmations provided by a buyer. Check that funds have cleared in your account before handing over any goods and, where possible, arrange to meet in a safe, public place." Anyone with information that could help the investigation, or who recognises the person pictured, should contact police on 101 and give the reference number 5226112785.

POLICE officers seizing a vehicle in Street for having no insurance found themselves with some unusual assistance from the public. The officers were approached by an unexpected member of the public - a sheep - as they were going about their duties in the Sainsbury's car park. "While the driver was being dealt with, our woolly visitor appeared keen to oversee proceedings and ensure everything was being done by the book," an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said. "After a brief inspection of the scene, the sheep was safely guided away and no further baa-d behaviour was reported from the sheep. "It's certainly not every day that officers receive roadside assistance from livestock."

Hot weather reveals long-lost Bishop's Palace garden layout RECENT hot weather has seen many of reveal rather more than we usually would – usually arms and legs in a bid to cool down. However, at one historic Somerset landmark, the scorching sun has uncovered something far more interesting than pale shoulders. At the Bishop’s Palace, in Wells, an aerial photograph reveals how the parched ground has unearthed markings showing historic features of the grounds, covered for centuries. A spokesperson for the palace said the hot weather had meant a “hidden piece of history” was now visible.

“Following what has been the hottest July on record in Somerset, the dry conditions have uncovered the outlines of Dutch-style gardens in front of the Great Hall, thought to date from the mid to late

1700s,” they went on. “Although June’s wet weather helped our gardens flourish, the prolonged sunshine since then has made these historic features visible from above. “We haven’t noticed them during previous droughts, but drone photography has made them much easier to spot. “The lines you can see were probably gravel paths, with neatly clipped grass or box hedging between them. At the time, the Great Hall walls were still standing, although the roof had already gone. “It’s a fascinating reminder that even the weather can help uncover stories from the past.”

Rogue mechanic jailed for two years after scamming customers across 10 counties

A

ROGUE mechanic who scammed customers across the country – including in Somerset – has been jailed for his conman antics. Dorset Police detectives worked with Trading Standards partners to expose Mark Douglas Lowe, of Poole, Dorset, who was sentenced for two counts of fraud by false representation, with six further charges taken into consideration, when he appeared at Bournemouth Crown Court on July 31. An investigation was into the 47-year-old after reports Lowe – who advertised his services as a mechanic under the names Dorset & South West Mobile Mechanics Ltd, South Coast Mobile Mechanics Ltd and Mobile Auto Electricians Ltd

– had repeatedly asked for payments up front for work on vehicles and parts and had either failed to carry out the work or supply parts paid for. The court was told how in December 2024, Lowe visited the address of man aged in his

50s in Maidenhead, Berkshire, who needed work on his vehicle and advised the victim the total cost of repairs would be £750. This included £350 for a new engine control unit, with the victim paying £250 in cash. The victim never received the part and did not receive any response to calls and messages to Lowe, pictured. Then, in November 2025, a woman in her 60s in Wincanton, contacted Lowe after seeing his adverts as a mobile mechanic online, and arranged to him to come and repair the vehicle. He attended and advised cash was needed up front in order to purchase new parts, with the victim paying £500. Again, Lowe never supplied the parts. An investigation by detectives into further reports from various parts of the country led to six similar fraud offences being identified, which Lowe admitted and were taken into consideration when he was sentenced. Alongside the police probe, Dorset Council’s Trading Standards team investigated offending over a three-year period ending in July 2025. The exercise identified more than 20 victims across Dorset, Hampshire, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Cornwall, Staffordshire, Yorkshire, Herefordshire, Warwickshire

and Worcestershire, with a total value of the offences estimated at around £22,000. As a result, Lowe was prosecuted for seven Trading Standards offences including fraud by false representation, fraudulent trading and aggressively pursuing a customer. He was sentenced to two years and three months in prison when he appeared in court. Evidence compiled by the Trading Standards team, with support from Dorset Police, also led to the court imposing a criminal behaviour order preventing Lowe from advertising or offering his services as a mechanic for a period of five years. He was also disqualified from being a company director for five years. After the hearing, Detective Constable Nick Taylor, of Dorset Police’s Economic Crime Unit, said: “Mark Lowe is a rogue trader who scammed a series of customers from around the country, taking their hard-earned money without any intention of supplying the parts they had paid for or doing the work he had promised. “By working with our Trading Standards partners, we have ensured that he has been held accountable for his deception and measures have also been put in place to limit his opportunities to target further victims in the future.” Martin Thursby, from Dorset Council’s Trading Standards, added: “Mark Lowe knew his customers all desperately needed their cars fixing but he did not hesitate in defrauding them without repairing any of their cars and leaving many in an even worse condition. “It was clear the judge recognised the harm done by Lowe when he imposed a sentence of immediate imprisonment.”

White tailed eagles return to Somerset after 200 years

White tailed eagles are back on Exmoor after disappearing 200 years ago

W

HITE-TAILED eagles are back in Somerset – for the first time in 200 years. Six young birds have been released in Exmoor National Park, the first to be reintroduced after the species disappeared due to persecution more than two centuries ago. The releases are part of a project started in 2019 by Forestry England and the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation to restore the lost species, and the key role it plays in supporting biodiversity, to England. Since then, 45 white-tailed eagles – the largest bird of prey in Britain – have been released from the Isle of Wight. Several are now breeding and in 2023 the project celebrated the first white tailed eagle chick to be born in the wild in southern England since 1780. The team is now working with the Exmoor National Park Authority to release further white-tailed eagles in a bid to boost the population and expand their breeding range into south west England. Up to 20 additional young birds will be released from this location over the next three years, while releases from the

Isle of Wight will also continue. Exmoor was chosen as an additional location after tracking data from the released birds showed the area had been frequently visited by several of them and provides suitable habitat. It is known the species formerly bred along the Exmoor coastline, which continues to provide ideal foraging, including an abundance of fish, and breeding habitat for the birds. Zoe Smith, from the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation, said: “White-tailed eagles would have once been a common natural sight across the south west of England. “After so many years absent from this landscape it is a special moment to be returning them on Exmoor. “We will closely monitor their progress as they explore and, in time, begin to settle across this region. Thank you to everyone in the community who is working with us to support the return of these magnificent birds.” Earlier this year, the six young birds were collected under a NatureScot licence from the wild in Scotland and

brought to Exmoor, where they have been cared for by a team of experts while becoming familiar with their new surroundings. Before finally being released, the birds were fitted with satellite trackers so their progress can be closely monitored by the project team. It is expected the young eagles will travel widely across the UK and potentially into Europe before returning to the area to breed when they are four or five years old. Angela Eagle, Environment Secretary for Defra, said: “Majestic white‑tailed eagles – a particular favourite of mine – are once again soaring above Exmoor and the Isle of Wight, reflecting this government’s commitment to reversing the decline of nature and protecting it for generations to come. “We are investing £90 million into species recovery, marking the largest ever government investment to directly support threatened wildlife.” Stephen Egerton-Read, project officer for Forestry England, said: “It is incredible to be returning this once lost species back to England. Seven

years into the project we can see just how well the eagles are settling along the south coast of England and the really positive reaction the public have to seeing them back. “These additional releases on Exmoor will help to boost the population and expand their geographic range into the south west ensuring many more people can see these amazing birds and are inspired by seeing nature return in this way.” A comprehensive feasibility study and public surveys were conducted before reintroducing the birds, while a steering group made up of organisations and members of the community has met and is helping guide the project. Ali Hawkins, senior ecologist with Exmoor National Park Authority, added: “This is such an exciting moment for Exmoor and a real boost to biodiversity in the National Park, as whitetailed eagles play a crucial role in both marine and land-based ecosystems. “We’d like to thank all representatives taking part in the steering group and we will continue to work closely with the local community as the project progresses.”

Mum and daughter ready to walk for vets

A

SOMERSET Royal Navy veteran is putting her best foot forward – alongside her daughter – for a hiking challenge to raise money to support former servicemen and women. Maria Vaughan, from Templecombe, is taking on a 27km Heroes Hike challenge along the Jurassic Coast with her daughter, Jill, on August 15, raising money for the Help for Heroes veterans’ group. The 56-year-old served in the Navy for 23 years, as an aero-engineer, working on helicopters and Harrier jets. Her fiancé, Lt Commander Martin London, known as Jack London to his colleagues, was killed in a freak accident at the age of 43 in December 2002. He was training another pilot in a Sea Harrier jet, which suffered engine failure, leaving behind Maria to bring up Jill, who was six years old. Maria, who had always

wanted to be an engineer, had first-class support from Royal Navy colleagues and from her family following on from Jack’s death. And that support, coupled with inner strength and determination, meant she was able to continue with her career until 2011. “After Jack’s death, I realised how important sport and

physical fitness was to me – going to the gym, running and playing five-a-side football helped me to deal with the emotional stress,” she said. “I’m still fairly active now, but I wanted to do something to push myself. I’d been talking about signing up for one of the Heroes Hikes for a long time, but it was a push from my mum

that got me to complete the form.” The series of seven Heroes Hikes started in April, with three more to go, including the Jurassic Coast on August 15, Dartmoor on September 12 and the Lincolnshire Wolds on September 26. “I’m excited and nervous at the same time, and I’m looking forward to talking to some like-minded people,” Maria added. “I’ve met some inspirational people who have been able to achieve their goals thanks to Help for Heroes, and Jill and I want to help the charity continue with its work. I’m hoping the hike will motivate me to take part in similar events.” n Support the pair at justgiving.com/fundraising/ jurassic-coast-h4h-trek, and for moreon about the Heroes Hikes, go to helpforheroes.org.uk/ give-support/fundraising-events.

Signs ordered for Queen Elizabeth Way SIGNS are being ordered for a busy Wellington road that is being renamed in honour of Queen Elizabeth II. In honour of the former monarch, who passed away in September 2022, Wellington Town Council previously resolved to request permission from Somerset Council to rename part of Taunton Road to Queen Elizabeth Way. Somerset Council has since given permission – and now signs are to be installed at either end of the renamed stretch – between the Chelston Roundabout and Priory – with the new information. At a Full Council meeting this week, Wellington Town Council heard notices will be posted at either end of the road from August 10 giving details of the change, giving people 21 days to object. Councillors were also told

Our AI impression of how the new signs could look in Wellington

the total cost of installing four signs – two at each end of the newly-renamed road – would be just over £5,000. “Officers have explored whether the council’s Open Spaces Team could install the signs. However, this would require additional certificated training, together with the purchase or hire of equipment to check for utilities and to install

poles on footpaths. This approach would not represent value for money,” a report to the meeting said, adding four new signs would be the recommended minimum, though none currently show the name of Taunton Road. “Once the number of signs is agreed they can be ordered and it is anticipated they would be ready for installation in late

September/early October,” the report went on. The report said the move supported the council’s role “recognising and celebrating local identity, heritage and civic pride”. It added: “Renaming this section of road as Queen Elizabeth Way provides a visible and lasting acknowledgement of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s service, while contributing to a clear sense of place for residents, businesses and visitors.” New signage would “ensure that the agreed name change is implemented consistently and visibly”, it said. Funding would be drawn from “general underspend at year end or the General Reserve”, members were told. At the meeting, on August 3, councillors approved the plan for four signs.

Hospitality students taste graduation joy!

P

ROGRESS made by students graduating from a specialist hospitality and catering college in Minehead was celebrated at a ceremony at the town’s Butlin’s holiday resort. The 32 students who graduated from Aurora Foxes Hospitality and Catering College were joined by more than 300 fellow students, teachers, family and friends to mark the occasion. Aurora Foxes is a specialist college for young people with special educational needs and disabilities, and has a fully operational hotel on the Esplanade where students gain practical experience in hospitality. Principal, Mark Costello, said: “The success of our students is built on thousands of moments that often go unseen, like catching a bus independently for the first time or who finds the confidence to answer the phone. “When I look across this stage today, I don't see

perfection. I see hundreds of moments like those. I see progress. And that is what we celebrate.” Guest speaker at the ceremony was Esther Brittan, Hilton HR operations manager for UK and Ireland. Hilton and Aurora Foxes have worked together for over 10 years, with the hotel chain offering work placements to individuals with learning disabilities to help them launch careers in the company’s hotels. Mrs Brittan told the graduates: “Today is not only a

celebration of what you’ve achieved, it’s also a celebration of what’s to come. “You are helping create a future where more people can see what’s possible. Hilton is proud of you and grateful to be part of your journey.” Foxes students have taken up more than 100 placements at Hilton hotels across the UK over the course of the partnership. One of them, graduate Hannah, was offered work experience doing front of house and room service at DoubleTree

by Hilton at Manchester Airport at Easter and has since been offered a job there. She said: “After Easter, Hilton contacted me to offer me a job. That meant everything to me. The experiences I’ve had at Aurora Foxes have been remarkable and I’m excited about my new job.” During the graduation ceremony, tribute was paid to Maureen Tyler-Moore, founder of Foxes, who died in December. Mr Costello said: “The college we know today exists because of her courage, determination and vision. As we celebrate our graduates this morning, we do so with gratitude for everything she created and everything she stood for.” Patricia Mahon, general manager at Hilton London Kensington, where three Foxes students work, presented two special awards at the ceremony – the Waldorf Hilton Award for Service Excellence and another recognising culinary excellence.

Snake warning after dogs bitten in Langport DOG owners in Langport are being warned to be on the lookout for SNAKES after several pets are believed to have suffered bites. One incident, understood to have happened last week during a walk in the Black Bridge area, saw a dog suffer a mystery injury – later confirmed as a potential snake bite. A second adder bite is understood to have happened on Saturday (August 8) in Combe Hill Woods, also in Langport, with vets warning walkers to be careful and the PDSA advising immediate treatment, as a bite which enters the bloodstream immediately “can cause death very quickly”. In Langport, the pet’s owners said as they returned home, “she was a little subdued”, but were

not initially concerned. Later, they said, it became clear the pooch had suffered an injury to her rear right leg. “Things got worse … so we popped her to the vets and they initially diagnosed maybe arthritis.” However, they said she was soon “struggling to sit, lie, and get comfortable” and the following day, her “whole leg had swollen”. Further investigation by the vet revealed four puncture marks in the dog’s leg, believed to be an adder bite. “Please be careful with your dogs in and around long grass.” Langport & Street Vets later issued a warning over the dangers of snake bites. “Please take care when walking around Langport,” a

spokesperson said. “We have seen a patient this week who we believe was bitten by an adder when walking along the river by Black Bridge. “Please take extra caution.” Adders are the only venomous snake native to the UK – and their bites can be very dangerous for dogs, according to the PDSA charity. “The adder is the only venomous species, grass snakes and smooth snakes aren’t venomous and don’t tend to bite,” a spokesperson said. “Adders tend to keep themselves to themselves and don’t bite unless they are scared, unfortunately, dogs tend to approach them without fear, startle them and get bitten. “If your dog has bitten by an adder, their symptoms will

depend on where the bite is, and where the venom spreads to. “If the venom stays in the tissues around the bite, it will cause pain and swelling, but if it spreads further and gets into the bloodstream, it can cause much more serious problems such as damage to the liver, kidneys, heart and nervous system. “If venom is injected straight into the blood stream, it can cause death very quickly. It can also be very serious if your dog is bitten on the face or neck because swelling can lead to breathing problems. “With treatment, most dogs make a full recovery, but sadly, in some cases, adder venom can cause severe illness and even death. "The quicker your dog is treated, the better their outlook.”

Healthcare firm's move to Taunton business park sees all properties filled

A

NEW healthcare firm has taken up residence at a Taunton business park. VeinCentre, which provides care solutions for those with vein issues, has moved to the Blackbrook Business Park. Developer Summerfield, which runs the site, welcomed the move and said VeinCentre’s arrival strengthened the park’s position as one of the region’s leading healthcare and business locations. The company has taken a new lease on a refurbished first-floor office suite at Aintree House, where it will open its latest clinic, specialising in the treatment of varicose veins and thread veins. The letting was secured by property consultants Alder King, acting on behalf of Summerfield. Maurice McLoughlin, chief executive officer at VeinCentre, said: “We’re really pleased to be moving into Aintree House. As VeinCentre continues to grow, it’s important that we invest in facilities that support both our team and the patients we care for. As the UK’s largest network of specialist clinics dedicated to treating varicose veins, thread veins and venous leg ulcers, we’re proud that this new

We’d also like to thank Alder King Property Consultants for their support in helping us secure such an excellent location.” Blackbrook Business Park is

just off junction 25 of the M5 and has become a hub for healthcare businesses, which include the Taunton Diagnostic Centre, Somerset Care, Meddcare Somerset, Lakeside Dental, the Ophthalmology Diagnostic Centre and About Health. There has also been sustained interest from healthcare operators in the potential for a new build premises on part of the final vacant plot available on the park, Summerfield said. at the developer, said: “With demand continuing for welllocated, high quality office accommodation across Taunton, particularly from healthcare occupiers, we’re delighted to have secured another successful letting. “VeinCentre is an excellent addition to the building, and with this latest letting the property is now fully let. We wish the team every success as they establish themselves in their new premises and the wider community.”

Work starts on nine new homes in village WORK is underway on a nine-home development in a Somerset village. Housebuilder Summerfield Homes has broken ground on Well Stone, a new development off Queen Street, in Keinton Mandeville, which will consist of seven houses and two bungalows. The new two-, three- and fourbedroom homes include solar panels, electric car charging points, a garage and private garden in a bid to help residents cut energy bills and environmental impact. Summerfield construction manager,

Mark Woodland, said: "We are delighted to be bringing new Summerfield homes to the highly desirable village of Keinton Mandeville. "Well Stone has been carefully designed to reflect the character of its surroundings while providing high quality, energy efficient homes for modern living. We look forward to becoming part of the local community over the coming months as the development progresses and to welcoming the first residents to Well Stone."

The electric SUV that actually wants to go outside!

T

HERE'S a moment every British family recognises. You’ve packed the bags, wrestled the dog into the boot, shouted “has anyone seen the charger?” three times, and finally set off for a weekend away. But 10 minutes later you’re stuck behind a tractor, the dog’s panting like a steam engine, and a voice from the back is already asking if you’re nearly there yet. It’s at this point you realise that the car you’re driving matters more than you think. Toyota seems to have realised it too, because the new bZ4X Touring isn’t just another electric SUV for the school run. It’s been designed for families who actually leave the house — the ones who head for the coast, the campsite, or the countryside and occasionally find themselves on a road that’s more “brown squiggle on the map” than “Tarmac”. In other words, it’s an EV that doesn’t panic at the sight of mud. The Touring is essentially the bZ4X that’s spent some time in the gym. It’s longer, roomier, more practical, and a bit more rugged than the standard version. Toyota has stretched the body by around 140mm, boosted the boot to a cavernous 669 litres, and added a more purposeful stance with extra ground clearance. It’s still recognisably a bZ4X, but it looks like it’s been told to stand up straight and stop slouching. Inside, the Touring keeps the clean, modern layout of the regular bZ4X, but everything feels a little more geared towards real life. The big 14.3-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard, the materials feel solid and sensible, and the cabin has that “wipeclean practicality” that parents quietly appreciate. There’s a power tailgate for when your hands are full of shopping bags or sandy beach gear, and roof rails for bikes, boxes, or the inevitable roof-

mounted storage pod that every family eventually buys. Toyota is offering two versions of the new bZ4X Touring, Design and Excel, priced from £45,995 and £51,695 respectively. The Design is front-wheel drive and perfectly adequate for everyday use. It comes with heated seats, wireless phone charging, a panoramic parking camera, and all the tech you’d expect from a modern EV. It’s the sensible choice, the one you buy if your idea of adventure is a National Trust car park and a nice cup of tea. The Excel, however, is where things get interesting. This is the version Toyota wants you to imagine on a gravel track somewhere in the Lake District, with a couple of mountain bikes strapped to the roof and a boot full of waterproofs. It gets all-wheel drive, a more powerful 22kW onboard charger, and a set of 20-inch alloys that look like they’ve been borrowed from something much more expensive. There’s also a Skyview panoramic roof, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a digital rearview mirror that makes you feel like you’re driving a concept car. The AWD system is tuned for genuine off-road ability too, not the “we put it on a grassy slope for the photoshoot” kind, but the sort that actually helps when the campsite track turns into a puddle-filled obstacle course.

Toyota has leaned heavily on its heritage here. This is the company that gave us the RAV4, the Land Cruiser, and the indestructible Hilux pickup after all, and while the bZ4X Touring isn’t pretending to be a battery-powered mud monster, it does feel reassuringly planted when the road gets a bit less road-like. In terms of performance, you should be thinking respectable rather than dramatic. The AWD version produces 280kW (about 375bhp in old money) and will get from 0–62mph in around 4.5 seconds, which is more than enough to surprise anyone who still thinks electric SUVs are slow. The front-wheel-drive Touring offers 224hp and a range of up to 367 miles, making it the longestlegged bZ4X you can buy. Charging is quick too: up to 150kW DC, meaning a 10–80% top-up in roughly 28 minutes if you find a suitably beefy charger. Practicality is where the Touring really earns its name though. The boot is enormous, the rear seats fold flat to give you 1,718 litres of space, and the AWD version can tow 1,500kg, which is enough for a small caravan or a trailer full of camping gear. Even the FWD version can manage to haul up to 750kg, which is still perfectly respectable for an EV. Toyota has also thrown in a generous helping of safety tech. The Excel gets an expanded

Toyota Safety Sense package including Front Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, Advanced Parking Assist, and Downhill Assist Control, which might be handy if your weekend adventures involve hills steeper than the one outside your local Tesco. There’s even a JBL premium audio system available, presumably for blasting out road-trip playlists while the dog tries to climb into the front. But impressive performance and specification aside, what’s truly refreshing about the bZ4X Touring is that it doesn’t feel like an EV designed purely for commuting. A lot of electric SUVs are brilliant Monday to Friday but slightly out of their depth when you ask them to tackle anything more demanding than a dualcarriageway. The Touring feels different. It’s not pretending to be a Land Cruiser, but it does give you the confidence to explore a bit further without worrying that the car will throw a tantrum at the first sign of uneven ground. It’s also a reminder that Toyota knows exactly what it’s doing when it comes to electrification. This is a brand with decades of hybrid experience, and while the bZ4X Touring is fully electric rather than a hybrid, it still feels like the product of a company that understands how families actually use their cars. So, is the new Toyota bZ4X Touring the perfect electric SUV for family adventures? Possibly, but that’s not my decision to make. What I can say, is that It’s practical, comfortable, reassuring, and capable enough to handle the sort of mild chaos that British weekends tend to involve. It won’t climb a mountain, but it will get you to the foot of one without complaint. And if nothing else, it’s nice to see an electric SUV that looks like it actually wants to go and play outside.

Group to discuss impact of M5 crashes

A

S ANOTHER busy summer continues on county roads, residents and travellers in Somerset will be bracing for the potential impact of a crash on the M5. For any closure, small or large, has a massive impact on the county, from the A-roads of Bridgwater, Taunton and Burnham, to the smaller routes through Westonzoyland, Henlade and Wellington. Now, Somerset Councillors have joined forces with a host of other organisations to discuss what can be done to limit the knock-on effects of M5 problems. Members of Somerset Council’s Climate, Environment and Place Scrutiny Committee recently invited National Highways, Avon & Somerset Police, and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner to discuss M5 incident

complexity of managing major incidents and supported a collaborative approach to reducing disruption wherever possible,” a council spokesperson said after the meeting. Now, the council’s Executive has backed the creation of a multi-agency working group featuring those at the meeting to analyse incident data, identify opportunities for improvement and develop a co-ordinated plan to “help reduce the frequency and duration of motorway closures”. “Members also supported further exploration of the potential for a Somerset Road Safety Partnership, bringing organisations together to improve road safety through prevention, education and enforcement activities,” the spokesperson went on. Leader of Somerset Council,

Bill Revans, is also set to write to the Government highlighting the issue of repeated M5 closures and their impact on the county. Lead member for highways and transport, Cllr Richard Wilkins, said: “We’re very grateful to all the representatives of our partner agencies for attending and discussing these challenges. “We know our emergency services are involved in the most incredibly difficult work when incidents occur on the M5, and we know there are no easy answers when it comes to minimising the impacts closures can have on communities and local businesses. “Working in partnership is key to finding ways to reduce the number of incidents and find ways to reduce their impact, it’s really positive that we have come away with this aim.”

Gala raises money to help unpaid carers

Carers at the charity gala, put on by Alliance Homes

A

CHARITY gala raised more than £1,600 to help give unpaid Somerset carers a day of respite. Portishead-based social housing provider Alliance Homes’ Carers Support Service raised £825 through the event, which rose to £1,650 after the firm matched the total. The money will be used to provide a special respite day trip for unpaid carers, giving them the opportunity to take time for themselves away from their caring responsibilities. More than 19,000 people in North Somerset are estimated to provide unpaid care to a family member or loved one, with many balancing caring responsibilities with their own health, wellbeing and finances. Jodie Moore, volunteer

coordinator within Alliance Homes’ Carers Support Service, who organised the fundraiser, said: “The money raised demonstrates the incredible generosity of our local community and the appreciation people have for unpaid carers. They are often the unsung heroes of our communities. “We’re grateful to everyone who contributed and we’re looking forward to offering carers some well-deserved rest and relaxation.” For many carers, opportunities for respite can make a real difference. Cinzia, who cares for her husband Wayne following a motorbike accident that resulted in a brain injury, said the support she’s received from the service has been life changing.

“The day of Wayne’s accident changed everything. I didn’t know what the future would look like, and his recovery hasn’t always been straightforward,” she said. “Caring can be very isolating. It’s usually just me and Wayne, and it’s not easy to leave him even for 10 minutes because he needs support all the time. "Finding Alliance Homes’ Carers Support Service helped me access advice and support, but it’s also meant I’ve been able to take some time for myself, take part in trips and activities. “For a little while, I can feel more like the person I was before. It doesn’t stop me worrying, but I’m able to focus on my wellbeing too.” Philippa Armstrong-Owen, director of business services at

The free event raised money to help the likes of Cinzia, pictured right with husband Wayne, who she cares for

Alliance Homes, added: “We recognise that our role extends beyond just housing. We’re committed to supporting stronger communities, improving the wellbeing of residents and helping people access the support they need. “The Carers Support Service and our other support services, make a real difference to people’s lives every day. We’re proud to match the funds raised from the generosity of everyone who supported the event.” Alliance Homes’ Carers Support Service is available to unpaid adult carers in North Somerset. Get up close to the legendary Ilminster Ring

V

ISITORS to a free event in Ilminster will be able to get up close to one of the most important ever Roman finds in the south west. South West Heritage Trust and Ilminster Arts Centre have announced details of the Ilminster Roman Ring Discovery Day – a free, family-friendly event celebrating the Ilminster Ring and coin hoard. Taking place on Thursday, August 20, from 10am to 3pm at Ilminster Arts Centre, the event will give visitors an insight into the Roman treasure through activities, community displays and a curator’s talk. Dating to around AD 297, the Ilminster Ring is described as “an extraordinary Roman gold

finger ring”, weighing in at 48 grams and set with a finelyengraved gemstone depicting the goddess Victory driving a two-horse chariot. It was found buried alongside a small hoard of coins, with experts describing it as “exceptional for both its scale and craftsmanship, making it one of the most important Roman finds from South West England”. Visitors at the Ilminster Ring Discovery Day will have the opportunity to view the Roman Ring alongside coins from the hoard, hear a talk by South West Heritage Trust senior curator Amal Khreisheh, and enjoy a display of artwork created by local primary school pupils. Senior curator Amal said: “The Ilminster Ring is an extraordinary object that connects us directly to people living in Somerset more than 1,700 years ago. “Its exceptional craftsmanship and remarkable preservation, alongside the Roman coin hoard with which it was discovered, make it a rare and significant find that sheds light on a pivotal moment in Somerset’s Roman history. “We’re delighted to be able to share it with the community and to celebrate its story through a special day of activities that will inspire curiosity about Somerset’s rich heritage.” Julie Manley, chair of Ilminster Arts Centre, said: “We’re delighted to host this free Discovery Day for the

Series of concerts A SERIES of free live music performances aim to bring different cultural backgrounds together in Bridgwater. Bridgwater Arts Centre will host everything from rock to pop and more, with performers hailing from Italy, Poland, and more. The Live Music on a Thursday Evening series will take place in the bar, with doors opening at 7pm, getting underway on August 6 with Claude Sandiford, a singer songwriter performing music “from George Ezra to reggae”. On September 3, audiences can enjoy a performance by Justyna Michalka, a Polish singer-guitarist based in Bridgwater, known for her engaging acoustic covers. And on October 1, visitors can enjoy Devid Piazza, an Italian singer-songwriter and guitarist who performs a mix of covers, alongside his own original songs. The series has been organised by Bridgwater Together, a community group dedicated to celebrating diversity and promoting connections across the town’s many cultures.

Bank holiday bins...

H BOOK ONLINE AT WWW.MONKTONELM.COM

OUSEHOLDS in Somerset are being given early warning of changes to recycling and rubbish collections over the August bank Holiday period. Somerset Council said pick-ups would be a day later than usual due to the Bank Holiday on Monday, August 31, when there will be no collections. “Collections will be one day later for the rest of the week,

including those on Friday, September 4, which will now take place on Saturday, September 5,” a spokesperson said. “Recycling sites that usually open on a Monday will still be open for the bank holiday.” The changes come as crews across the county battle soaring temperatures, with many collections delayed so far during the summer period, plus bins being collected from 6am.
