IG changes could be coming to Street Market after running of the sale was taken over.

Street Parish Council has taken over the market, which runs each Thursday, and has plans to get residents more involved in the event.

The move comes as Somerset Council looks to offload responsibilities – including the running of town markets – to parish and town councils, like Street, under an ‘asset and service devolution process’.

The market in Street is not covered by a historic Market Charter, like others in the county, but the parish council has invoked its market rights under Part III of the Food Act 1984. The authority officially took over running of the weekly sale on April 1, having committed to it last year,

including paying operational and running costs.

Now, two dedicated market officers – Matt Whiting and Craig Jackson, pictured inset – have been employed to oversee weekly operations and help develop the event into a “thriving, sustainable service for Street”.

Officers are now working alongside NABMA (the National Association of British Market Authorities) and traders to “assess the current offer and shape a strategic vision for the Market’s future”.

A formal review of the market service will be carried out after six months, with the intention of developing a long-term strategy to grow the event.

“With this new model of management and delivery, Street Parish Council is

committed to preserving the High Street as a vibrant space for traders, residents, and visitors,” a spokesperson said.

“The council aims to grow the market offering and implement improvements that benefit the entire community.”

Street Parish Council pointed to key Points of the new arrangement for the market: • Enhanced Local Control: The devolution process gives Street Parish Council the ability to make decisions that reflect the specific needs and character

of Street.

• Improved Vendor Support: New initiatives will be introduced to support market traders and ensure strong communication.

• Community Engagement: Residents and local businesses will be invited to contribute ideas and feedback to shape the future of the market and help it serve as a showcase for the High Street.

Chair of Street Parish Council, Bryan Knickerbocker, said: “We are excited to take on the management of Street Market. This is a fantastic opportunity to enhance a market that is part of our High Street’s identity and ensure it thrives for many years to come.

“We look forward to working closely with traders and residents to make Street Market even better in the days ahead.”

However, junction 26 and the A38 to Foxmoor Business Park will be closed for around 14 weeks from June 15 until the end of the project, although access to Foxmoor Business Park from the

Chelston roundabout will be maintained.

MP calls for reform of "broken" SEND funding system

“

THE Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) system is broken, and unequal funding is a major reason.”

Those were the words of MP Sarah Dyke (Lib Dem, Glastonbury & Somerton) during a passionate speech highlighting education funding issues in Somerset.

During a debate in Parliament on May 6, the MP called for fairer education funding for Somerset and urgent reform of the SEND system, which she said is failing some of the county’s most vulnerable children.

Ms Dyke is vice-chair of the f40 group – representing 43 local authorities with historically low levels of education funding – and used her Commons speech to highlight stark inequalities in Somerset’s allocation.

For 2025/26, Somerset’s Dedicated Schools Grant is £8,500 per pupil – while some councils will receive nearly

£5,000 more.

The high-needs funding block, which supports SEND provision in both mainstream and specialist settings, Somerset’s allocation is £1,250 per pupil – more than £2,000 less than the highest-funded local authority.

During the debate, minister for school standards Catherine McKinnell (Lab, Newcastle upon Tyne North) revealed the funding formula would be revised ahead of the 2026/27 allocation.

“The SEND system is broken, and unequal funding is a major reason,” Ms Dyke told Parliament. “My inbox is full of messages from parents who are desperate to get the right support for their children but are seeing their needs go unmet. It is deeply upsetting and unacceptable.”

She called on the Government to urgently review school and high needs funding formulas to ensure they reflect actual need and enable timely,

targeted support.

She raised unique challenges faced by large rural counties like Somerset, where delivering SEND support is made even more complex by distance and limited resources.

“The current funding model is not fit-for-purpose. Without reform, we will continue to see a deeply unequal landscape where children are let down and schools are unable to meet rising demand,” she added.

In response, Minister for School Standards Catherine McKinnell (Lab, Newcastle upon Tyne North) acknowledged many of the complaints – and said a review of the funding formula was planned ahead for the 2026/27 period.

said.

Ms McKinnell acknowledged high-cost areas such as London attracted more funding, but said deprivation was a key consideration when allocating funding.

However, she said after the Labour Government was elected last July, the administration had prioritised “speed over any changes” to the funding formula to give schools certainty.

“We do recognise that importance of establishing a fair funding system that does direct funding to where it is most needed,” she added, and that ahead of any changes, “different challenges faced in different parts of the country” will be taken into consideration.

Three students electrocuted in school incident AN investigation is underway after three pupils at Millfield School in Street were electrocuted by overhead cables.

The incident unfolded at around 7.30pm on Saturday, May 3, with an air ambulance and a hazardous area response team among emergency crews sent to the scene.

Millfield has confirmed the three, who were taken to hospital by land ambulance, are in a stable condition and are with their families.

Avon & Somerset Police said a referral had been made to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), who will lead any investigation into the incident.

“Three students were involved in an isolated accident on Saturday evening where they sustained serious injuries from

contact with overhead electrical cables,” a Millfield spokesperson said.

“They were supported by Millfield staff immediately and emergency services arrived within minutes. They are in a

stable condition in hospital, with their families by their sides.

“There is no ongoing danger to others. The entire Millfield Community’s thoughts and best wishes are with them all.

“We ask for everyone to respect their privacy and avoid speculation. We are working closely with the authorities to investigate how the accident occurred.”

An Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson added: “Three people were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Their next of kin have been informed.

“Following the incident, a referral was made to the Health and Safety Executive who will lead in any investigation.”

Work starting on new Somerset cinema

ORK will begin in days on bringing the big screen back to Wincanton.

S&B Cinemas team has secured ownership of the Art Deco former cinema-turnedbingo hall-turned-church building, in South Street, and is planning on creating a threescreen venue showing the latest Hollywood movies.

Your Somerset Leveller got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the property, as work gears up to begin this month to convert the empty building into a state-of-the-art cinema.

Behind the plan is Pat Scott, of S&B Cinemas, who wants to create a cinema welcomed by the people of Wincanton because he “believes in these smaller-town cinemas”.

S&B already runs successful venues in Frome, Minehead, and the original cinema, in Burnham-on-Sea, converting and updating properties to create small, welcoming venues.

And despite widelycirculated reports of declining audiences for movies on the big screen, Pat believes the familyrun ethos of S&B venues makes their cinemas different.

“I believe we’ve got it right,” he said. “The theatres that are doing well are the ones that look after the customer – and that is what we do.”

As for an opening date in Wincanton, the S&B team – including builder John and architect Phil, as well as Pat’s wife Beryl, their faithful dog Janie and financial backer, Lloyds Bank – are confident film fans will be picking up their popcorn in the town before

the end of the year, and possibly even earlier.

The original Plaza Cinema in Wincanton opened in 1934, but was converted into a bingo hall in 1970. In 1989, films were

once again shown at the South Street cinema, but the venue closed in 1992. In 1999, it was taken on by Wincanton Community Church, but has been vacant since 2014.

'She gave me purpose': Heartbreak for family as Olivia's murderer is jailed

IERON Goodwin has been jailed for life for murdering his girlfriend Olivia Wood in Frome – on the night she planned to leave him.

Goodwin, 33, was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 35 years on May 8 at Bristol Crown Court, having previously been convicted of 16 offences – including murder – against 29-year-old Olivia and three other women.

Olivia, a 29-year-old conservationist, was killed by Goodwin on July 30 last year, with the pair having been together for less than three months.

In statements read out in court, Olivia’s family spoke of the “mountain of agonising pain” her murder had caused, while the other three victims spoke about the significant and long-term effect of his offending on each of them.

Goodwin, of Frome, was convicted in April of 12 offences after a five-week trial and earlier admitted controlling and coercive behaviour against each victim.

After Olivia’s death, police found a packed suitcase and bags filled with Olivia’s clothes and toiletries, which the jury was told this suggested she was planning to leave.

During the sentencing hearing, the court was told about the impact of Olivia’s loss on her family, and of the effect of his physical and psychological abuse on the three surviving victims.

Her mum, Astrid Wood, spoke of her “loving, hardworking and helpful” daughter whose compassion sparked her interest in nature, particularly protecting small animals.

She said: “A hole has been severed and bitten out of my heart, out of my womb. It hurts.

I feel sick. I am limping inside with pain. I gave life to Olivia

and no-one, no person on this earth was allowed to take her life away. She will never walk through my front door again; I cannot hear her footsteps ever again.

“She gave me purpose. She was beautiful and confident walking her path, she knew where she wanted to be.

“I miss her voice, her laugh, her warmth, her stories from work, her experiences with the little animals that she loved so much. There was always a beetle or a bumblebee to rescue.”

On July 30 last year, Olivia, the youngest of four sisters, was found seriously unwell in Goodwin’s Frome flat by paramedics. She died in hospital later that day with her family at her side.

In their victim personal statements read out in court, Olivia’s sisters spoke of their closeness and the impact of her loss.

“Our lives have always been deeply entwined,” Tamara Wood said. “She is one of us, and we are one of her. This loss will never leave me. A deep empty chasm sits in my heart like a heavy black stone. This shouldn’t have happened. She

was too young, taken far too soon.”

Kyra Wood, the eldest sister, said: “The defendant lied and lied. He preyed on Olivia’s good nature. He knew she couldn’t drive away from anyone who might harm themselves. She turned around. Olivia’s kindness has inadvertently saved another woman from her death.”

Soscha Seymour said: “If the defendant had any decency, he would have admitted to his actions and prevented what we have all had to endure over the past five weeks.

“He instead chose cowardice and a disgusting, misogynistic assassination of Olivia’s character in an attempt to weasel out of the vile actions he has committed.

“She had a big heart and only ever gave her kindness, which was manipulated in such a way that has made her out to be someone she is not.

“Not only has her life been taken by this monster, but her reputation too. I want this to be my opportunity to say loud and clear that Olivia was not this person and her memory does not deserve to be tarnished by the allegations made during this trial.”

As well as the murder of Olivia, Goodwin was also sentenced for controlling and coercive behaviour against her having pleaded guilty to the offence. He also admitted the latter offence against three other victims. He denied – but was found guilty of – the following offences against them: Four counts of rape, Five counts of causing person to engage in sexual activity without consent, One count of sexual assault by penetration, One count of intentional strangulation.

Alongside his prison sentence, the judge also granted indefinite restraining orders preventing Goodwin from contact three other victims.

In their victim personal statements read out in court, they each said Goodwin’s offending continues to affect their lives.

One said: “My life has been spent in survival mode, and somehow I have continued to survive. The aftermath has been the most devastating, as I did not recognise how truly awful what I went through was. I am still not fully comprehending the gravity, even while being involved in a murder trial.

Hoax bomb call

POLICE were called to Frome College after a hoax bomb threat.

Police attended on May 8, the college said, “to ensure everyone’s safety”.

“We extended tutor time while the police checked our site, and we have now returned to our normal timetable," they added.

Avon & Somerset Police said a call at around 8.30am told college staff there was bomb on the site.

“Police were immediately called and attended, and with staff they searched the area.

"Nothing suspicious was found and the call was deemed malicious," a spokesperson said.

"During this time, all students in the specified area of the college were evacuated, the normal school day resumed shortly afterwards.”

Plan for 210 homes at North Petherton

RESH plans to develop a 30-acre site near North Petherton have been submitted – for up to 210 homes.

Gladman Developments Ltd has submitted a request for a ‘screening opinion’ to Somerset Council for a site at Newton Road, bordering Stafflands Farm.

A previous scheme, for up to 140 homes, was refused in 2017, and an appeal against the decision dismissed the following year.

However, the new application said that refusal, “solely due to their (the inspector’s) judgement that the conflict with the local plan’s locational policies, was greater than the benefits of the appeal proposal, at that point in time”.

The application said the scheme would “deliver a range of market and affordable housing”, with 30% of the

properties designated as affordable.

INADEQUATE: Pyrland School in Taunton was slammed in a contested Ofsted report

'Bullying is common' say inspectors after Pyrland School inspection

YRLAND School in Taunton has been rated as ‘inadequate’ across the board following a recent Ofsted inspection.

The school, formerly Taunton Academy, was visited by inspectors in January – just weeks after the sudden departure of the head teacher.

Circumstances surrounding the Ofsted visit prompted the school to complain to the education watchdog, claiming the inspection could have an adverse effect on staff, and that it would not give a true impression of progress made.

The claims came after the former head teacher left the Cheddon Road school just weeks before the inspection.

Previously, Taunton Academy had been rated as ‘requires improvement’ – so the new report shows inspectors think the school has gone backwards.

The damning report, released today (April 29), said Pyrland School – which has almost 1,000 pupils on roll – “does not provide an acceptable standard of education for pupils”.

“The curriculum is not

ambitious about what pupils should know and do,” it went on. “While the school has begun to make some improvements to the curriculum, this work has been slow and has had little positive impact on pupils’ achievement.

“Staff do not have highenough expectations of pupils.

As a result, pupils lack the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in qualifications or their next phase of education.

“Pupils behave poorly in classrooms and around the school site. Truancy from lessons and poor punctuality to lessons frequently disrupt learning. The behaviour system is unclear.

“Consequently, some staff are not sure how to manage pupils’ behaviour effectively and some pupils are openly defiant towards adults.

“High numbers of pupils receive sanctions for poor behaviour. These pupils then do not receive the support they need to learn from incidents, so poor behaviour is repeated.”

It also highlighted how “bullying is common” and that “pupils have stopped reporting

incidents to adults as they lack confidence in the school’s ability to help resolve concerns”.

“This makes some pupils feel unsafe,” the report added.

In addition, the report also highlights how pupils “lack understanding about protected characteristics”.

“This means that pupils do not know that racist and misogynistic comments should not be tolerated,” it went on.

“Therefore, pupils are not well prepared for life in modern Britain.”

Despite that, inspectors did note how the “personal development programme teaches pupils about healthy relationship in an ageappropriate way”.

“The school provides pupils with information about careers and future post-16 options,” it went on.

Pyrland School is part of the Richard Huish Trust, which is working with the Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership (MNSP) on improvement plans.

They include the appointment of new executive head teacher, Mark Lawrence,

currently head of Bucklers Mead Academy in Yeovil, who will oversee both schools.

The school hit out at Ofsted over the inspection, raising “concerns about the conduct of Ofsted inspectors and the integrity of the process”.

However, Ofsted told your Leveller it does not comment on individual schools beyond what is included in reports.

A Pyrland School spokesperson said: “While the school acknowledges there is still some way to go on the journey at Pyrland and we have already started to respond to Ofsted’s feedback, there is particular disappointment that the inspectors failed to recognise progress made since the pandemic.

“We are disappointed at a suggestion in the report that the school has gone backwards since its most recent inspections. House shut down over drug dealing, fighting, shouting and criminal damage...

A

HOUSE in Bridgwater has been shut down amid reports of drugrelated anti-social behaviour (ASB) - including drug dealing, fighting, shouting and criminal damage.

The Homes in Sedgemoorowned property, in Fairfax Road, has been shut for three months and returned to the firm's management after an order was issued at Taunton Magistrates' Court.

It will remain closed to all people for the duration of the order, which could be extended after the initial three months, with anyone who enters the property committing an offence and facing arrest.

The closure comes after a Community Protection Warning was issued to the occupant in November 2024 in relation to ASB and crime at the address,

pictured above.

Reported issues included drug dealing, suspected violence, shouting, fighting, banging on doors, criminal damage, and high numbers of visitors coming to and from the address at all times of day and night, some of whom stayed days at a time and were known by the police for various offences, the court was told.

For example, on January 27 this year, neighbourhood police officers found a woman at the property who was wanted on warrant for thefts. She was arrested and removed from the property.

Some visitors had also been identified as highly vulnerable and at risk of exploitation, police said, and on February 22, officers were alerted to a man suspected of being held against his will at the home.

He was identified as a vulnerable person, with diagnosed autism and mental health problems, and safeguarding measures were put in place to protect him from further harm.

Most recently, a Section 8 search warrant was carried out at the address under the Police and Criminal Justice Act. Three people were arrested at the property and a mobile police station was set up nearby to reassure and provide support to residents.

After the closure was announced, a neighbour remarked: “The street is the quietest it’s been in 15 years, so I want to thank you.”

Neighbourhood Inspector Sarah Knight said: “The closure of this property is a huge relief for residents on the street. They can finally live their lives

without fear of abuse, crime, noise and drug dealing.

“I cannot overestimate how much of a toll it takes on a person’s wellbeing to reside near persistent anti-social behaviour for months and, in this case, years.

“I’m grateful for the community’s patience, resilience and due diligence in reporting issues.

"It’s because of neighbour reports and impact statements that we were able to build a robust case to put before the court and secure the order.

“This process took time in order to gather evidence and provide sufficient support to the occupant of the offending property. Nevertheless, I hope this closure will reassure Somerset residents that reporting issues does make a difference.”

PEOPLE are being urged to have their say over current and future pharmacies in Somerset.

Somerset Council has launched a consultation to help assess the need for pharmaceutical provision in the county.

The Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) is produced by Public Health Somerset and aims to support NHS England, Somerset Integrated Care Board, and Somerset Council in commissioning and supporting decisions around encouraging or permitting new pharmacies to open.

The PNA is written using national guidance focussing on access to pharmaceutical services, and does not assess the quality of services.

The current consultation is on the draft PNA, to understand if the report covers the necessary information, and correctly represents pharmaceutical services in Somerset.

As of January this year, there were 91 community pharmacies and 23 dispensing GPs in Somerset.

A gap analysis shows the distribution and opening times of pharmacies in Somerset

are ‘generally appropriate’, and services are commissioned in ways that ‘largely cover the county’.

Now, people in Somerset are being encouraged to give their feedback to inform the final report, scheduled for publication

by September.

Lead member for public health, Cllr Graham Oakes, said people's views "will be invaluable" and urged residents to get involved.

The draft PNA consultation for Somerset can be found online HERE and will close on Monday, June 16.

New furniture store for Taunton

NEW British Heart Foundation (BHF) ‘Home Store’ is opening in Taunton this summer.

The Taunton Home Store, at the former Argos property at 32-33 East Street, is set to offer a range of “pre-loved furniture, electricals and homewares”.

Ahead of the opening the charity, which has another shop in Taunton’s North Street, has applied for permission to install

new signs on the building.

Previously, the BHF had a homewares shop in the High Street, but it closed in 2023 and has been replaced by an Asian supermarket.

The BHF website says the new Taunton outlet will welcome shoppers from “summer 2025”, with Somerset Council planners now due to consider the bid for two new illuminated signs.

Report reveals health and financial struggles of Somerset police officers

OLICE officers in the Avon & Somerset area feel ‘worse off’ financially now than they were five years ago – while almost one-in-five (16%) ‘never’ or ‘almost never’ have enough money to cover essentials, according to a new survey.

And in a blow to bobby numbers in Somerset, many could leave the force as a result – with 18% of Avon & Somerset Police officers who responded to the new poll saying they intend to resign ‘within the next two years’, or ‘as soon as they can’.

The figures come from the 2024 Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) Pay and Morale Report, which was published this week, featuring 786 responses from Avon & Somerset officers.

In response, the force said while pay increases are set nationally, it had “acknowledged concerns about workload and welfare” and is working with the PFEW and others to address issues.

Meanwhile, the results show 86% of respondents have seen living cost increases in the previous month, with 56% of officers dissatisfied with their pay.

Although police officers received a 4.75% pay rise in 2024, officer pay has reduced by a fifth since 2010, the federation said.

Nationally, 76% of officers responding to the PFEW survey said their pay does not reflect the dangers they face, while a third struggle to afford essentials such as food, rent, or heating.

Officers are also struggling with low morale and lack of support, the survey found. In Avon & Somerset, 90% of officers said they do not feel respected by the Government, and 55% said they were

experiencing low morale.

A total of 70% of respondents from Avon & Somerset Police said they would not recommend joining the police to others.

Tom Gent, secretary of the Avon and Somerset Police Federation, said: “To see that 90% of our colleagues feel morale is low isn’t surprising to me, but we must ensure that our officers who are out there supporting the community are recognised for their hard work.

“I know lots of officers are leaving the service, we’re loosing that experience, it’s really difficult to replace that experience and there’s no doubt that pay is a factor in that.”

He added: “Officers are feeling under pressure, they’re feeling under-resourced, under-equipped, over-worked, and they need support, they need our support, they need Government to ensure they support officers, that officers feel backed by our own organisation and by the national

picture, and that they do need to be compensated fairly – we’ve seen pay erode by around 20% over the past few years, we see experienced officers struggling to make ends meet.”

The report also revealed how officers are coming under attack from the public, with 17% having suffered one or more injuries requiring medical attention as a result of workrelated violence in the last year.

Only 14% of officers who responded reported having access to double crewing at all times while on duty.

In Avon & Somerset, 69% of respondents said that over the last 12 months, their workload has been ‘too high’ or ‘much too high’, with 5% of officers saying they have ‘never’ or ‘rarely’ been able to take an 11-hour break between shifts in the last 12 months. Almost a third of officers (31%) said they ‘always’ or ‘often’ feel pressured into working long hours.

As a result, 86% of the 786

respondents from Avon and Somerset said they had experienced feelings of stress, low mood, anxiety, or other difficulties with their health and wellbeing over the last 12 months, with 47% saying they find their job ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ stressful.

An Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said: “Chief officers and senior leaders in Avon and Somerset Police work closely with the local Police Federation branch and have acknowledged concerns about workload and welfare.

“These come against a background of rising demand and increasing complexity of calls on the police service.

“We have drawn together colleagues from across the service to identify the changes which might help to reduce these pressures, so that officers and staff can be there when the public need them.

"Pay and conditions for police officers are negotiated nationally.”

MP brings committee chair to Somerset to meet affected farmers face-to-face

N MP at the forefront of farming legislation visited Somerset to find out more about how changes to the system are affecting county farms.

MP Anna Sabine (Lib Dem, Frome & East Somerset) welcomed fellow Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael – chair of the cross-party Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee – last weekend to “show him first-hand the realities facing Somerset farms”.

The committee scrutinises the work of the Defra in Parliament and helps represent the interests of rural communities – such as the West Country.

The parliamentary pair visited Landmark Farm, in Wanstrow, owned by the Mountys, which produces beef, milk and arable, as well as utilising a wind turbine on their land for green energy.0 Anna and Alistair toured the farm, including the milking parlour and the sheds with some new-born calves, discussing the innovations the farm has made in carbon capture and their aims to exist in an environmentally-friendly way.

Mounty as part of discussions with the NFU and learned more about food production and some of the hardships facing farmers under the new government regulations.

“I was delighted to be able to show Alistair what we have in Somerset in terms of progressive farming and for Craig and his father to be able to discuss with us both what they see as the major issues inhibiting them,” the MP said following the visit.

“The west country is a fertile and abundant area that could be utilised more to help give us food security in the UK, and if we allow farmers to work with us, we can find solutions that are both economic and environmental going forward.

“Somerset and the farmers here are a crucial asset for the local, and national economy and I hope that we can make improvements to help them facilitate the growth necessary.”

Police station set for summer makeover YEOVIL Police Station is getting a makeover – with work set to begin this summer.

The refurbishment of the Horsey Lane facility will see a new vehicle workshop developed so police vehicles can be maintained locally, while a new external staircase will be constructed for the station to comply with modern fire safety standards.

Avon & Somerset Police said the scheme was a major investment in the site, and is due to completed by autumn 2026.

The project begins after Yeovil policing teams have been based temporarily at the Somerset Council offices in Brympton Way for the last few years.

Teams will continue to work from Brympton Way until the refurbishment has been

completed, which is expected to take around 12 months.

During the project, the police enquiry office will remain open in the portacabin outside the Horsey Lane police station for the first six months, with plans being explored for another temporary home for the remainder of the project.

Neighbourhood Inspector Roseanna Green said: “Firstly, I would like to thank the community and our teams in Yeovil for their patience – as we know, this has been a long time coming, but the wait will be worth it.

“The station was in need of a complete overhaul, and while our temporary location at Brympton Way has allowed us to continue over the last few years, this refurbishment will give us a long-term home that is fit for purpose, enabling us to

deliver an outstanding service for Yeovil and South Somerset.

“We also understand that during the refurbishment period there may be some disruption for those living nearby, but I can reassure you that the contractors

Wells Skatepark revamp plans revealed

LANS have been revealed to redevelop Wells Skatepark to create a “new and much-improved” facility for young people.

An application by Salmon Planning Company has been handed in to Somerset Council on behalf of Wells City Council and the Wells Skatepark Community Group.

It details plans to replace the 20-year-old skatepark, off Lovers’ Walk, near the Waitrose car park, which is “ageing and out of date”.

“Many ramps have recently been removed as they are no longer fit for purpose,” it said.

“The area is currently a Tarmac surface with metal and wooden ramps – the wear and tear on the wooden ramps is proving costly for the council and is becoming unsustainable.

“The area is also unusable for wheels such as roller skates or younger learners because of the

“The whole park is also on a slope which poses additional safety risk, particularly to younger learners.”

"We can all support each other": Why we should do our bit and Buy Somerset

Times are hard, and the political outlook is fraught around the world. At a challenging time, Somerset's producers, suppliers and service providers need our support more than ever. Here's why your Leveller is calling on readers to BUY SOMERSET

OMERSET is home to some world-famous producers.

And it should come as no surprise, given the abundance of county-grown ingredients, a beautiful setting, and a seemingly genetic entrepreneurial spirit and determination among residents.

Now, more than ever, it is important we focus on our home-grown goods and the companies, large and small, that produce them.

The Somerset Chamber of Commerce says the county has more than 25,000 business - many of them small, independent firms living, working and reinvesting money they make - right here.

Outside our county lines, the world economy is changing.

From Donald Trump's tariffs to the climate crisis, everything is in flux as the world deals with a new reality, both political and environmental.

One thing we can all do to help, regardless of political persuasion or thoughts on the drive to net-zero, is buy local.

Last month, a group of county MPs united to launch a 'Buy Somerset, Back Britain' campaign calling on shoppers to do their bit by backing county producers.

We wholeheartedly support that aim and your Somerset

easy. The convenience of supermarkets is always tempting, while fears over the cost of home-grown produce can put many of us off.

However, you may find buying local - shopping Somerset - can often save you money, and even if it does cost

From internationally-known names like Mulberry and Yeo Valley, to the independent heartbeat of business in Somerset, we all need to keep our county in mind when browsing store shelves.

One group of enterprising entrepreneurs in the county are the folks behind The Mump Market Garden - a fast-growing farm shop in Burrowbridge.

The initiative also runs a veg box service, delivering to surrounding towns and villages - with plans to expand coverage.

£11m Langport water plant work finished

W

ORK on an £11 million refurbishment of a water recycling site in Langport has been completed.

The Wessex Water scheme, which has taken 18 months, aims to help safeguard the health of waters in the River Parrett, with the finishing touches completed this month.

Improvements to the facility will significantly reduce the impact of damaging chemicals found in wastewater, the firm said, keeping pace with environmental targets and improve water quality in the river and its surroundings.

Since the autumn of 2023, teams from Wessex Water and sister engineering and construction company YTL Construction have been working at the site, to the west of the town, to improve measures removing phosphorus from wastewater during treatment.

New systems, tanks and

upgrades to electrical equipment on site have also been carried out, with more than 8,000 tonnes of earth shifted to pave the way for the improvements.

Project manager, Victoria Plummer, said: “Chemicals like phosphorus are found in, with sewage arriving at our water recycling centres, farm slurries, agricultural fertilisers and septic tanks among the sources and Wessex Water has committed millions of pounds across its

region to address this issue.

“Where these nutrients are present in high concentrations, they can cause large growths of algae in waterways such as streams and rivers, damaging plants and animals in those areas by depleting the amount of oxygen in the water – a process known as eutrophication.

“The work carried out at Langport is an example of the decisive action we are taking to

address this issue as part of our commitment to protect the environment and also take into account the potential for population growth in the area in future years.”

More than £40 million of similar work to improve treatment methods has been completed, or is underway, across Somerset in the last few years, the firm said, including at sites near Martock, Crewkerne and Merriott, all close to the River Parrett.

In Somerton, more than £5 million was spent to remove chemicals and enhance the water recycling centre to boost the protection of local watercourses and the nearby River Cary.

And further north, a £5 million Wessex Water project to build an integrated constructed wetland to naturally remove nutrients is expected to get underway near Shapwick next summer.

Young musicians rewarded with school performances

OUNG musicians took to the stage to showcase their skills during a Somerset school’s annual competition.

Banwell Primary School held its annual Musician of the Year Award winner’s concert and presentation on May 2, with winners performing to their fellow pupils, parents, carers and more.

The competition is now in its 29th year, with 20 hopefuls bidding to secure an award in five categories: Musician of the Year Award age 7-11, Musician of the Year Award age 4 -7, Most original Act, Wowed the judges, and Highly commended.

“The winners were chosen through an audition process which focused on confidence, uniqueness, musical talent and

passion,” a school spokesperson said.

The Musician of The Year assembly was led and curated by assistant head Kate Evans and music lead and teacher, Sarah Dockerty.

Category winners performed live to a packed audience of parents, carers and the rest of the school, and showcased performances from a diverse group of pupils, ranging from a solo drummer, a family singing trio, acapella performances and

solo vocalists. The show was brought to a close by a Year Six pupil singing a in the Polish language.

“Musician of the Year is a highlight in the Banwell calendar,” said Ms Dockerty. “It was wonderful to see all of the children’s hard work pay off culminating in a fantastic celebration and awards ceremony.

“We are very proud of all of the children who took part this year and are already looking forward to next year’s event.”

One performer, Rosie, said: “All of my family have their names on a trophy and now I can join them.

“It has taken me three years to become confident enough to perform in front of an audience and I am so pleased I did.”

30mph limit on A39

A 30MPH speed limit has been introduced on the A39 in West Somerset during roadworks - set to last for seven weeks.

Work is starting to complete improvements to the cycling and walking route along the A39, between Minehead and Dunster.

Two-way traffic on the A39 will be maintained during the day, with some night work required with traffic lights installed.

The 30mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the work, Somerset Council said, to improve safety for workforce and the public.

Lead member for transport and waste, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said: “Our team will be able to keep disruption down to a minimum while work is being done and the end result will be an excellent facility people can enjoy."

Crewkerne man William Chalkley jailed for 24 years after attacks on two women

ILLIAM Chalkley has been jailed for 24 years for the rape and assault of two women.

The 40-year-old, of Court Barton, Crewkerne, was jailed on May 8 at Taunton Crown Court, sitting at North Somerset Courthouse, after being found guilty by a jury in March.

He was sentenced for 11 counts of rape and one count each of assault by penetration, sexual assault, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault causing actual bodily harm committed against two women between the mid 2010s and mid 2020s.

The court heard Chalkley raped and sexually assaulted one woman before seeking out his next victim who he later assaulted and raped.

In an impact statement, one of the victims said: “When I was told Chalkley had been found guilty, I burst into tears. I was so relieved to hear those words.

why I wanted to pursue this case was so he could not hurt another woman and to get justice for those of us who had been affected by his behaviour and his crimes. I feel this has now been achieved.

“He completely destroyed me as a person. He took away a lot of my life, but each day I am becoming a stronger person. I now want to move on with my life and be the person I want and deserve to be.”

Chalkley’s second victim said: “From the point that this incident happened I was in complete disbelief. I was terrified of him hurting me again. I constantly questioned whether I could have done something to prevent this situation ever happening. I felt trapped.

“This has changed my life. I need to rebuild my whole self and life again. I want to be back to the me before this happened.

“I am so lucky I have the fantastic support of my family and close friendship group. I do not know what I would have done without their unwavering support.

"I am also thankful to the police who have been with me every step of the way and have constantly been there when I needed them.”​ In a joint statement, the two investigating officers – DC Nicola Raybould and DC Simon Ledbury – said: “We wish to thank the victims in this case who, through their incredible

strength, courage and determination, have brought a dangerous offender to justice.

“Chalkley has refused to accept the severity of his actions against the two victims and has shown no remorse throughout the investigation and at court.

“The two victims expressed throughout the police investigation that they did not want any more women to be victims of Chalkley.

"Their commitment to ensure justice is served has resulted in him receiving a lengthy custodial sentence.

Gallery opens in Taunton High Street A NEW art gallery – featuring works by the likes of LS Lowry – has opened in Taunton.

The venture has opened to art lovers at the former Shoe Zone store, in the High Street.

It is being operated by Triton Galleries, which also has outlets in Dartmouth and Torquay.

The firm specialises in original art and collectable limited editions from contemporary artists around the world.

Currently on display in the gallery is a 1972 LS Lowry limited edition print of Going to the Match, signed in pencil – one of only 300 produced. The original painting sold for £7.8 million in 2022.

As well as the refurbishment of the ground floor for the gallery, property firm

Summerfield Commercial is also converting the two floors above into four apartments, that will be available for rent at the end of the summer.

Bid for new Minehead pool takes another step forward

BID to build a new public swimming pool in Minehead has taken a step forward after two community groups joined forces to move the project forward.

Minehead Health & Wellbeing (MH&WB) and Minehead Swimming & Leisure (MSL) have teamed up to work towards the pool.

MSL is a Community Benefit Society established in 2020 to build a community-owned indoor public swimming pool and leisure centre.

MH&WB is a Community Interest Company established in 2024 to provide facilities – including a swimming pool – to improve the health and wellbeing of the local community.

Key individuals from both groups have long been working towards these aims, motivated by the closure of Minehead’s Aquasplash facility in 2008.

Bruce Lang, a director of MH&WB, said: “MH&WB Directors have considerable experience in project development, local government, finance, public health, fundraising, leisure, swimming

development and education.

MSL has wide experience in community consultation and structures. We make an ideal partnership.

“There is a lot of work to do, but by working together and combining our local knowledge and expertise, we hope to deliver a project that will benefit all of the local Minehead and West Somerset community.”

The groups’ joint vision is for a 25-metre pool suitable for year-round use, as well as a gym to be used by the community and as a base for the West Somerset GP exercise referral scheme, enabling it to develop the current, very wellsubscribed offer.

The groups said they will try to raise the costs of the build from a variety of grant funding sources, as there are new opportunities becoming available later this year.

Once it is built and ready to operate, the groups intend for it to be a community-owned facility run as a co-operative.

They have now requested Minehead Town Council to formalise its support for the project and earmark land at the

Recreation Ground, in Irnham Road, for the facility.

Peter Wellstood, founding director of MSL, added: “The two groups have a lot in common when it comes to our ambitions for the local community, and we view our coming together as a real boost towards finally making the facility a reality.

“MSL values the relevant backgrounds and skills of the MH&WB directors and feels we all have the best chance of being successful by closely collaborating.

“It remains important to us that the facility be communityowned under MSL’s original model.”

A BIKER suffered “lifechanging” injuries after a crash in Weston-super-Mare.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a crash, involving a car and a motorcycle, in Winterstoke Road at around 3.15pm on May 6.

“The motorcyclist has been taken to hospital with serious injuries which are believed to be life changing,” an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said.

“The road was initially closed while emergency services attended and debris was cleared. It has since reopened.

“Enquiries into the collision are ongoing and we are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.”

Sink hole closure DRIVERS were urged not to use a Somerset road which was closed as workers dealt with a sink hole.

The B3190 at Upton, between Dulverton and Wiveliscombe, was closed on Tuesday after a ‘void’ was discovered.

Somerset Council put an emergency road closure in place to allow teams to investigate and repair the defect.

Jail for former Frome teacher, 29, who stabbed woman who spurned him

ORMER Frome College teacher Matthew Jones has been jailed for 12 years for stabbing Emma Kirk at least 15 times in a “brutal and frenzied attack” in a Bath street.

Jones, of Ivy Avenue, Southdown, Bath, attacked 25-year-old Ms Kirk in February last year after she told him they wouldn’t be anything more than friends.

He insisted on meeting her in a lane off Dransfield Way so she could hand back gifts he had bought her.

But at 4.20pm, 29-year-old Jones was restrained by members of the public after stabbing Emma.

In bodycam footage released

by Avon & Somerset Police, Jones can be heard telling officers: “Don’t show me respect. I’m a monster.”

Emma suffered multiple stab wounds and cuts to her neck, face, head, abdomen and hands in the horrific attack, with surgeons telling her family the knife had been millimetres from a key artery and it was “a miracle” she survived.

The prompt actions of members of the public who intervened and gave first aid, and the quick response of emergency services are credited with saving her life.

She needed emergency surgery and was placed in a medically-induced coma. Her injuries meant she couldn’t tell officers about the attack until 10 days later.

During his initial interview, Matthew Jones gave police officers a prepared statement, in which he denied deliberately stabbing Emma, saying he was acting in self-defence, and he could only assume she was injured during their struggle.

Later, Jones entered a guilty plea to an offence of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, accepting he did deliberately stab her, not in

New school plans revealed for Weston

W

ORK will soon begin on a new primary school in WestonSuper-Mare after a contractor was appointed for the build.

The new 630-pupil school will be built as part of the 2,500-home Haywood Village development by Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd. On the site of the former Weston Airfield, the school will be named Airfield Primary Academy and is being built as part of the Persimmon Homes Severn Valley scheme.

The T-shaped building will be the second school Persimmon has delivered as part of the major development, and will be equipped with solar panels, powered by air-source heat pumps, while the estate will also include wildflower areas, insect hotels, potential beehives, and log-based habitats.

It will feature 21 classrooms,

a 103-place nursery provision together with school hall, kitchen facilities, and staff and head teacher rooms.

There will also be a community hub, made up of studios and changing room facilities.

The school is set to welcome pupils from September 2026, run by the Cabot Learning Federation (CLF), which runs six other schools in Weston, all

rated good or outstanding by Ofsted.

Wedding venue plan for stately home

ILLINGTON House, in Ilminster, could become a wedding venue if plans are approved.

A planning application has been submitted by Purcell Architecture Ltd on behalf of Ewen Cameron, of Dillington Cottages Ltd, owner of the estate.

The scheme outlines the “need for change” at the estate, which was leased by Somerset Council for 70 years.

Now, the council has vacated the property, and the owners of the Dillington Estate – including the grade II*-listed house – say the plans provide a “solution for the long-term future and sustainability” of the property.

The application said the

council’s surrender of the lease provides “an exciting opportunity to rejuvenate Dillington House and give it a new life through creating a sustainable business”.

That business, the application says, would be to exploit the property as “an ideal venue for weddings”.

“The Mews Complex is already set up to host conferences and, with the accommodation available, to host residential events,” it said.

In a letter accompanying the application, Mr Cameron said: “We now hope to evolve it again and make it fit-forpurpose for our vision of how the house will be used and enjoyed.

“Naturally our goal is to celebrate and make the most of the stunning historic architecture and add to it with improvements that future generations will appreciate and be proud of.”

A range of refurbishments and changes are proposed to “enable Dillington House to function and compete in a competitive wedding venue market”.

Changes proposed include widening some access points, providing accessible toilet facilities, refurbishing windows

and removing a bar, added in the building’s history.

En-suite facilities would also be added to some bedrooms, while staircases will be added and amended to comply with fire regulations. A bridal suite would be created, overlooking the gardens to the east.

No changes are proposed to vehicle access to the house, the application said.

Former village parish councillor jailed over sex assaults spanning 11 years

W

OOLAVINGTON man Nigel Frith has been jailed after admitting sexually assaulting six people – including four children – over a period of 11 years.

The 56-year-old, a former Woolavington Parish Councillor, pleaded guilty to 14 counts of sexual assault by touching against four children and two adults and was sentenced to 34 months behind bars at Taunton Crown Court, sitting at North Somerset Magistrates’ Court, on April 30.

The court was told Frith’s offending, between 2012 and 2023, would see him touch, kiss, and make sexual suggestions towards children as young as 10, through to adults in their 20s and 30s.

Each victim wrote a personal statement, read out at the sentencing hearing.

One wrote: “When this happened, I was a child. I didn’t know what sexual assault was.

“When I saw [Frith], I felt uncomfortable. I saw him once outside a local shop working, he looked so unaffected by everything that had happened with me. I was frustrated he

didn’t seem to understand the impact of his actions, and yet I was having to change my life to avoid feeling on edge.”

Another said: “When I think back to what happened, I feel angry. Angry at the thought he could do that and think he could do it again and get away with it.

“At the time, I shrugged it off.

I remember he didn’t seem bothered by what he was doing.

Even when I called him out, he shrugged it off.

“I was shocked and confused that he had done this to me. I found it incredibly invasive that he would do this to anyone.”

A third victim added: “It used to make me feel violated when I saw you. I felt that you were invading my personal space … your presence made me feel uncomfortable.

“There were so many emotions at once, it was overwhelming. I would make any excuse just to get away as quickly as possible.

“The past few months have been really difficult for me. I used to feel I had let myself down, even though it wasn’t my fault.”

Alongside his jail sentence,

Frith, above, was also handed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, a restraining order and added to the sex offenders’ register.

Investigating officer, DC Martyn Jackson, said: “I have to commend the strength of the victims in coming forward about these horrendous crimes.

“Frith’s actions are disgraceful and left his victims feeling

degraded and violated.

"The way he touched these girls and women, invaded their personal space and made them feel angry and terrified, is unacceptable. His pattern of offending shows there was thought to his actions.

"He knew the impact he was having on these women and girls and he violated them in a place where they should feel safe.”

Flats planned above former card shop PLANS to create six apartments above the former Clinton Cards shop in Bridgwater have been submitted.

The scheme would see the upper two storeys of the grade II-listed building at 15 Fore Street adapted to create the apartments, with a shop remaining at ground level.

Clinton Cards closed in July 2020 and has been vacant ever since, with the application saying “the condition of the building, particularly internally, is such that significant repair and maintenance is required”.

“Investment is therefore essential to bring the building up to acceptable standards, and to enhance the intrinsic character of the heritage asset,” it said.

“As such, the building needs to make

better use of its potential assets to avoid the risk of any future use or development becoming economically unviable.”

As well as a change of use application to allow the apartments, listed building consent is also being sought on behalf of Project Fabrications.

“The building is currently vacant across all floors and is in essential need of repair and maintenance,” the application said.

“Changing the upper floors to an economically beneficial use is therefore fundamental to the future viability of the building, while enhancing the intrinsic character of the historic building.”

The apartments would all be onebedroom, with access through the rear of the building, allowing the commercial premises to the front to remain.

A communal bin storage area will be created in the rear yard, along with parking for up to four cars, and cycle storage.

'Rural crime teams need proper funding'

HIS spring, it’s been a pleasure to be out and about across the constituency meeting residents, visiting local businesses and listening to the concerns of our rural communities.

Last month I held a 'Future of Farming in Somerset' symposium, which brought together key industry leaders including local farmers, agricultural experts, local police and council representatives to discuss the challenges facing the farming community.

One of the major takeaways was the vast scale of rural crime that Somerset's farmers are facing.

It was disheartening to hear from the farming community that almost all had experienced rural crime. The scale of the problem in the South West is really alarming, with a 42% increase in rural crime according to NFU Mutual’s latest report.

Our farming communities are already stretched beyond breaking point following years of Conservative financial mismanagement, Labour's family farm tax and the abrupt closure of the Sustainable Farming Incentive scheme.

So, the cost of rural crime can really be the final straw for these farming businesses already operating on tiny margins, not to mention the impact on their mental health.

Incredibly, despite being a huge and very diverse region, Avon and Somerset is only currently served by two dedicated rural crime officers.

Responsibility for this lies squarely at the feet of the previous Conservative government. Their choice to slash police officer numbers was incredibly short-sighted and we

are now seeing the cost of that decision across the country.

At the farming symposium, officers from Avon and Somerset Police did a fantastic job of keeping attendees informed about their work and how to better protect their property.

It was encouraging to hear about the new system which makes reporting rural crime simpler and far quicker. The officers reiterated it’s incredibly important every single incident of rural crime is reported, no matter how minor it seems, as they use this data to build up a picture of crime patterns.

I have long demanded action on rural crime, and as chair of the Rural Services All-Party Parliamentary Group, I’m focused on making rural crime a top priority.

Communities here in Somerset deserve to feel safe and supported, but for too long, rural areas have been neglected by those in Westminster.

The Liberal Democrats are calling for properly funded rural crime teams in every police force. I will continue to use my voice in Parliament to fight for rural communities to get the police manpower they need to feel safe.

'The early years sector cannot be ignored'

S the Member of Parliament for Bridgwater, I recently visited The Olive Tree Nursery - a well-run, caring, and committed early years provider in the heart of our town.

Like many nurseries across Somerset, they are doing everything they can to give children the best possible start in life. But what I heard during that visit was worrying.

Rising staffing costs - driven by increased National Insurance contributions, rising wages, and general inflation - are making it harder for settings like The Olive Tree to stay afloat.

That’s why I submitted a series of Parliamentary Questions to the Secretary of State for Education, asking what impact these rising costs are having on nurseries, whether there has been any assessment of the risk of closures, and

whether the government has considered exempting nurseries from increases to employer National Insurance contributions.

The response I received was long on rhetoric and short on substance. The government spoke of its ambition and quoted headline investment figures - over £8 billion for early years in 2025/26, an increase to the Early Years Pupil Premium, and expansion grants.

But there was no answer to the specific questions I asked. No figures on the projected impact of National Insurance rises. No modelling of how many settings could close. No indication that the government had even considered an exemption for the sector. Meanwhile, independent

analysis tells a very different story. The Early Years Alliance estimates that this year’s changes to National Insurance and minimum wage laws will cost the average nursery over £18,600 extra per year. A separate survey by the Alliance found that 95% of providers plan to increase fees, and two in five believe they may be forced to close permanently without urgent action.

What’s more, while the government has announced a £25 million grant to help with National Insurance costs, this support will only be available to public sector nurseries. Most settings are private or voluntary providers and are being left out entirely.

In Bridgwater and across

Somerset, that creates a very real risk. Nurseries are being asked to deliver more for less, and parents are already facing higher fees as a result. Some providers are having to cut places, or stop offering government-funded hours altogether, because the funding simply doesn't cover the cost of delivery. This isn’t sustainable.

If the government truly values early years education, it must recognise that the decisions it is making is putting undue pressure on precisely the providers it relies on most.

Ministers must act to ensure that all nurseries - not just those in the public sector - get the support they need.

Somerset’s children deserve access to affordable, highquality childcare. And providers and staff delivering it deserve fair support for the work they do every day.

What 40 years of business has taught me:

F

OLLOWING on from my blog about cash flow, I thought I would discuss the role of banks, investors and how to raise capital.

Counter-intuitively, I have always found that the more you need (not want), the easier it becomes. Like so much about business as in life, you need to think about your audience. You have to ask yourself, 'why does someone or some institution want to put money into my business?'

Clearly, beyond friends and family, professional investors and lenders have a business model of making returns on their funds. This might be their own money but more often someone else’s.

If it is third party funds, they will have agreed investment lending criteria. It is worth finding these out upfront. You may have the greatest idea in

the history of humankind but if the lender/investor has a mandate that excludes your sector or they have a minimum (or maximum) investment/ lending amount, it's best to rule them in or out upfront. Next, and critically, what is their attitude to risk? At one end you have risk averse banks and at the other end start up funds. The returns and security required is in part driven by this attitude.

The higher the risk, the higher the required return which will always be double digits.

Conversely, the low risk banks will charge relatively low interest, potentially and currently, hopefully single digits interest but will often or always require a personal guarantee often back up with security. I

will return to PGs later.

So why is it easier to raise more money? Again, know your audience. Managing a lending or investment position takes time, it takes energy, it takes commitment. The lender/ investor once in, will (or should) devote as much time to their individual positions, almost regardless of the amount. The time taken to manage a £5 million position is essentially the same as a £100,000 one.

There is also a lot of money chasing potential deals. The banking director or the investment manager can only manage so much in their portfolio, so to get the best returns, on average, it is easier to deploy larger amounts of

capital to one entity.

They will also assume that at the lower levels, you will self-invest or persuade friends and family as to what a great opportunity you have. This F&F investment sends a good signal in that you are going to be more committed to looking after your friends and family, to protect their money, to grow the business profitably and to manage cashflow. It also demonstrates belief.

Once you realise that banks are low risk institutions, you will understand why they will so often decline to lend to your business. Single digit interest is not sufficient enough of a return to justify taking any material risk on a business.

Offering a PG and/or security is not in itself sufficient to move the conversation on as no bank wants to find themselves in the unhappy position of demanding

Series one, episode two repayment, calling on a PG and worst, forcing the sale of the security, often your family home. That is why the confidence levels, that you are capable of servicing interest and repaying the loan or overdraft, has to be high and communicated as such.

The best way to communicate this is with a well thought out and presented business plan, which you clearly believe in and which you can demonstrate can be robustly delivered. Examples of a lack of deliverability (“execution risk”) might include, “I have successfully run this sandwich shop for five years now and want to expand to 20 new ones in two years”. Banks will almost NEVER lend on this.

Why? Well, you cannot fault the ambition but the risk of expanding too quickly, the need for competent management to help you deliver the plan, the understanding of what the

working capital implications of such a fast expansion and the inevitability of significant additional liabilities means they will be highly sceptical that it will all work out. Even high-risk equity investors will look at this sceptically unless you have a clear step-by-step plan that demonstrates at every turn why you will deliver on it. So, this is what the plan should be designed to do.

Put yourself in the shoes of the potential investor, what will they ask? What will be important to them? What will be your answers? Using the sandwich shop example above, have you got a robust, repeatable, deliverable menu?

(Why do McDonalds taste the same all over the world?).

Where do you fit in in terms of pricing and who are your target market? Is it the “sarnie” market or is it the sourdough and focaccia artisanal sandwich?

Have you looked at margins?

Have you stress tested these margins? Have you identified all the potential sites? Do you know the likely rents etc? How will you recruit, motivate and retain good staff? What key personnel do you need to hire?

Do you need a COO, FD and an HR person?

I will discuss more about business plans in subsequent blogs but for now and as promised, my thoughts about PGs. The standard line is that “well if you really believe in it, put your money where your mouth is. Show commitment.” I don’t buy into this. If you have demonstrated capability and perhaps already put your own money and that of friends and family, then to put your family home on the line with all that entails, together with the stress of worrying about failure means your ability to think straight, to make good decisions will inevitably by impacted by the potential loss of your home or

being made bankrupt.

I believe there needs to be space in an economy for failure, as there is in the USA. According to Fundsquire, a global start-up funding network, 20% of small businesses fail in their first year, and according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS), only 42.5% of new businesses are still trading in their fifth year (2014-2019).

Ultimately, a good idea and plan will find a home so don’t take no for an answer but also listen to what professional investors and lenders are saying.

They see businesses day in and day out and whether we like it or not, for a company looking to grow and raise money, these people are the 600lb gorillas in this jungle.

OZENS of Somerset students picked up awards for the academic efforts at a glittering ceremony.

Strode College celebrated the achievements of its 2024 student cohort during an event at Strode Theatre.

Surrounded by friends, family, and staff, nearly 100 students were honoured for their exceptional accomplishments during a ceremony that highlighted personal growth, academic excellence, and resilience.

The annual awards evening highlights those who have gone above and beyond in their studies, many overcoming personal or educational challenges on their way to success.

In total, 40 awards were presented to deserving students nominated by college staff for ‘exceeding expectations and demonstrating extraordinary determination’.

Guests enjoyed canapés prepared by the college’s hospitality students before the main ceremony, where award recipients were celebrated with certificates, vouchers, and a star-shaped glass trophy.

John Revill, principal and chief executive, said: “This evening is about recognising individual achievement and the journeys students have experienced in order to achieve their personal best.”

The guest speaker was Ted Allen, Vice-Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, who said: “Employers are looking for drive, ambition, integrity, and honesty. Respect your colleagues and employers, stay true to yourself, and be kind to yourself and others.

There will be knockbacks, but rise above rejection.”

A highlight of the evening was the introduction of a new award – The Eavis Award for Young Local Talent – sponsored by the Eavis family, renowned for their contribution to music and culture through the Glastonbury Festival.

The award aims to nurture the next generation of musical talent in Somerset and includes a £100 prize to support the winner’s ongoing development.

Glastonbury organiser, Emily Eavis, said: “At the festival, we’ve always tried to support emerging musicians, so I’m

delighted to play a part in establishing this award at our local college.

OR more than four decades a “hidden gem” exhibition in Somerset has showcased amazing miniature artworks.

Wells Town Hall is the home of the Hilliard Society’s International Miniature Exhibition, which has been running annually for more than 40 years.

Founded by Sue Burton, a gallery owner in Wells, and miniaturist Rosalind Pierson, the society’s first display was in May 1982 – and has continued ever since.

The name of the society was chosen as Nicholas Hilliard was a prominent Elizabethan miniaturist portrait painter, born in Exeter in 1547.

"The art of miniature painting is many hundreds of years old, originally being a way of recording someone’s portrait before photography was possible," an exhibition spokesperson said. "Miniature paintings and drawings or are generally no larger than 4.5 x 6 inches and sculptures no more than 10 inches."

The exhibition opens on Saturday, June 7, and runs until June 14.

New artists exhibiting this year include eco-artist Caroline Westan, who paints scenes on used teabags, as well as an artist from Ukraine and a group of young artists. There will also be exhibits from many of The Hilliard Society members with subjects including landscapes, portraits, still life, wildlife and more.

To coincide with the opening, the society is hosting a Miniature Painting Workshop on June 7.

“The intention of the workshop is to introduce the technique of miniature painting to beginners, as well as helping artists who may already have some experience but would like to brush up on their skills or try out new ideas,” the spokesperson went on.

"There will be experienced, award-winning miniaturists on hand to tutor – this year including Michael Coe, Linda Kracht and Claudia Haesen."

The workshop will run from 10am until 4pm at the Town Hall in Wells and costs £50, to include tea and coffee, and there will also be time to have a look around the exhibition in the Main Hall.

Castle Cary vintage market returns CASTLE Cary’s seven-year-old Vintage Market returned in March - and runs until September.

The sale, at The Market House, BA7 7AH, takes place on the first Saturday of each month between March and September.

Stars let train take the strain for Glasto

A

HOST of stars will let the train take the strain as they travel to perform at Glastonbury next month.

Musicians including the likes of Sam Ryder, Nova Twins, Self Esteem and Greentea Peng have signed an ‘I came by train’ pledge ahead of their dates at Worthy Farm.

Festival goers can make their way to the fields of Worthy by taking a train to nearby Castle Cary station, 40 minutes from London, where a free bus runs to the Pilton site.

‘I came by train’ is a Trainline campaign encouraging music lovers to ditch their cars and take the train, a more sustainable and stress-free way to get to Glastonbury.

The Glastonbury Festival site opens to the public from Wednesday, June 25, with thousands expected to make the journey that day, and on the following day, making their way

home from Sunday, June 29.

Train operator Great Western Railway (GWR) said people intending to take the train need to book in advance, with special queueing facilities in operation in London and at Castle Cary.

GWR will operate more than 55 trains from London Paddington to Castle Cary to get people to the Glastonbury Festival, as well as many other trains from other parts of the network.

Over the three days from Wednesday to Friday of festival week, GWR will provide 37,000 seats on trains from London Paddington, and more than 16,000 seats for the return on Monday.

A total of 25 trains will operate for the return journey towards London Paddington on Monday, July 1, while extra services are also being laid on between Castle Cary and Westbury, and Castle Cary and

WHAT are the elements of a HE Shepton Snow truly happy life? AMallet new art installation in Bridgwater aims to help people consider the problem…

Utopian Chemistry is a unique pharmacy and pop-up art instillation that will be taking over a shop at the Angel Place Shopping Centre from May 15 to 17 and 22 to 24.

Featuring the art piece, A Periodic Table of a Feasible Utopia, created by David Goldblatt, the installation asks, ‘What are the elements of the good life?’

The periodic table consists of more than 100 A4 framed elements, including Lo (Love), Ce (Clean Energy) and Rk (Random Kindness).

Visitors taking it in are

asked – by pharmacy workers in suitable white coats – if they think anything is missing.

Should they say yes, they can add their suggestion to a second ‘people’s’ periodic table, created by visitors throughout the installation.

Everyone who suggests a missing element receives a print out of their suggestion, which is also added to the evolving people’s table.

Utopian Chemistry was first created in November 2023 at an empty shop in The Galleries in central Bristol, running for 15 days and visited by more than 1,000 people.

The installation will be open from 11am to 4pm from May 15 to 17 and again between May 22 and 24.

Free concert will bring lute to the Levels

A

MUSIC on the Levels' free concert takes place on June 29, with Steve Graham performing at St Mary’s Church in Westonzoyland.

The concert starts at 3pm and refreshments are available at a modest charge from 2.15pm, organisers said.

Steve Graham started his musical life as a classical guitarist but gradually "became enticed by the beauty and rich repertoire of the lute", a spokesperson said.

"The lute flourished in European music between 1500 and 1750 and during this time underwent many changes, particularly in the number of strings.

"In addition to the solo music, the lute offers many opportunities for ensemble playing and Steve has enjoyed working with several groups specializing in Mediaeval, Renaissance and Baroque music as well as accompanying solo singers, notably soprano Mary Morgan, with whom he has previously enjoyed performing at Westonzoyland."

Steve will demonstrate several lutes and related instruments and perform music from across the continent and from the Golden Age of English music, during the reign of Elizabeth the First.

Teaching children all about the NHS...

HE next generation of NHS workers have been inspired to enter the caring profession during visits to Somerset schools.

As recruitment remains a challenge for the health service across the country, a specialist team at the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is busy letting youngsters know how they can make a difference.

The Trust often publishes articles and videos detailing the many routes people of all ages can take to get into the health service; from degree courses and apprenticeships, to work experience and placements.

But there is also a specialist team that goes out into both primary and secondary schools with the aim of raising awareness of the diverse range of careers available in the NHS to children at an early age.

Caroline Stone, Trust careers and employability skills facilitator, said: “We’ve found that among lots of young people there’s a bit of a misconception that everyone who works in the trust must be a doctor or nurse

and nothing else – mainly thanks to the many TV dramas and YouTube clips out there.

“When we visit schools, we obviously still want to promote a medical or nursing career to young people, but we also find out exactly what they’re interested in, so we can tailor our conversation to fit that.

“For example, it may be that they love science, so we’d talk to them about the many healthcare scientist roles available.

“The whole purpose of the

work we do is to engage with young people at an early age, planting those seeds that a career in healthcare could be for them.

“We also try to dispel some of those other myths, such as every single colleague working 12-hour shifts and on bank holidays, as this actually all depends on the setting and role.

“Another example is that most young people who want to work with children in the future tend to believe that the only realistic path would be

becoming a paediatric nurse, while actually there are so many more roles available."

Most primary school visits are led by Mark Carter, future careers facilitator, who even runs a special Teddy Bear Hospital.

“There’s no point in bombarding the very young kids with information, but instead we want to inspire them through practical things, which is why I tend to take a Teddy Bear Hospital with me to primary schools,” he said.

“This basically involves allowing the children to play with the bears, and some of the ‘medical equipment’, and within that setting we talk about which professions may use that equipment in very simple terms – no jargon allowed here.

“In total we’ve held 27 events for primary schools and have spoken to 1,315 kids so far this school year – an incredible effort.”

The feedback from teachers at the schools visited by the team has been unanimously positive, the staff said.

Dance class helps women feel supported

A

NEW dance class helping women feel "sexy, strong and supported" has launched in Taunton - believed to be the first of its kind in Somerset.

Femme Flow, which runs weekly, promises women "a unique opportunity to move and reconnect with themselves — all whilst soaking up feel-good vibes".

The sensual dance class runs from 7.15pm at the Nourish Yoga Studio at The Quay in Coal Orchard, and is designed specifically for women, blending "sensual floorwork with mobility, flexibility and yogic techniques — creating a confidence-boosting experience like no other".

"It’s all about feeling sexy,

strong, and supported," said Carmen Lee, class founder and certified sex and relationships educator, dancer and yoga teacher.

"We’ve created a space where women can move with

intention, boost their selfconfidence, and simply enjoy being in their bodies."

Focusing on fluidity, felineinspired movement and body positivity, she said Femme Flow is ideal for complete beginners

and welcomes women of all shapes, ages, and abilities. No heels are required — as it prioritises accessibility for all women.

Carmen said the atmosphere is "fun, inclusive, and a little bit cheeky", featuring everything from slow, sultry stretching to playful twerking and whining.

One attendee shared: "This class is the highlight of my week. Why not take a fresh look at lilacs?

O

NCE no garden would have been without a lilac that flowered in spring, just like Ivor Novello’s song. At the turn of the last century and right up until the fifties, the cultivated form of Syringa vulgaris was everywhere. And now, quite suddenly, lilacs have fallen from favour. Possibly because Syringa vulgaris has a large but rather uninteresting presence for most of the summer.

But the genus Syringa does deserve another look. Other species of lilac such as Syringa x meyeri ‘Palibin’ and S. persica, the Persian Lilac, are just as popular now as they ever were. The former makes a bushy shrub about 1-1.5m in height and width. It flowers very happily anywhere sunny in the garden, in most soils, perhaps with the exception of very acid, poorly draining clay. It produces panicles of scented, lilac

flowers. They are conical and pointed in shape and have an intense perfume.

Syringa x persica is also a lover of full sun and rich but draining alkaline soil. Persian

Lilacs are altogether daintier than the usual large-flowered forms, with more attractive foliage. Whereas the Common Lilacs can reach 5-7m in height and probably in width if given

space, this form grows to about 3-4m after 10 years.

Many varieties of S. vulgaris in particular have a suckering habit, which can be off-putting.

But if these suckers are cut down to below ground level, the tree will produce lots of new growth in the crown.

Lilacs are relatively fastgrowing trees or large shrubs, making over 30cm of extension growth every year in the right conditions. A newly planted shrub or small tree may take a few years to settle down, reaching maturity after about 20 years.

They are very long-lived, so it’s sensible to give a new, young lilac plenty of space to expand for over 10 years. Give it a feed in spring that is low in nitrogen, which tends to promote leafy growth only –and high in potash to encourage flowering. And your lilac will repay the effort with clouds of flowers with the scent of yesteryear.

Making more lilacs:A step by step guide

by Sally Gregson CUTTINGS of some shrubs will root easily in a glass of water. We’ve all produced forests of willows and dogwoods. Others are considerably more tricky.

Lilacs, unfortunately, are among the latter. So, it’s wise to take at least twice as many cuttings as you think you need at the outset.

Then add a few more for good luck, if you can.

Taking cuttings of the species lilacs, such as Syringa x meyeri and S. x persica, is best carried out during a brief window of opportunity after they have flowered. Lilacs make sideshoots below the flower-head, and it is this material that roots the best. Once the side shoots have made about 4-6cm of growth, and before they extend any longer, they can be detached

from the main stem with finger and thumb, pulling down, leaving a ‘heel’ – a sliver of skin – on the end of the cutting.

Try hard not to bend the cutting stem itself while detaching it.

Take as many, and more, as you think you need, and lay them down on a clean surface.

Remove the tip of the shoot to prevent it wilting and detach the lower leaves without skinning the cutting.

Now, fill a half-pot – recycled Chrysanthemum pots are the right size – with 50-50 mixed potting compost and grit.

Tap the pot down to settle the contents.

Dip each cutting in fresh hormone rooting powder – which is available online and should be less than six months old since opening. Push each cutting down around the edge of the pot into the rooting compost,

then label the pot with the name and date, and the number of cuttings you took to help you ‘guesstimate’ next time. Water the cutting well, drain it and pop the pot into a plastic bag. Blow into it to deliver a dose of CO2 and keep the sides from touching the leaves, tie up the bag and put it somewhere shady.

Keep an eye on the cuttings

and open the bag once they have ‘perked up’. They can gradually be acclimatised to life on the greenhouse bench before potting them up and putting them outside. Re-pot them every spring for a year or two.

They should be ready to plant out once they have grown enough to stand up for themselves in your garden.

When a storm installed a water feature in our living room, we didn't know where to turn...

Then we found Roofcraft

A

S I came in through the back door, soaking wet, having made sure the sheds were secure for the night as yet another ferocious storm hit Somerset, I heard the words any homeowner dreads: "I think we have a problem with the roof."

Roofs, boilers and windows.

Three things very few of understand, but are so, so important to maintain for the security and safety of our homes.

So it's always terrifying when something goes wrong. If you're not a roof expert, or a plumber, or glazer, you have no idea what can have happened - why would you? - and no idea how much it will cost to put right.

So it was with terror in our hearts my wife and I watched water pouring down our chimney, creating a novel indoor water feature.

Thankfully, in the next 15 minutes, the rain eased and our new fountain was switched off.

Relief.

So we popped towels down

to dry things up and I was tasked with finding someone to help us get it sorted.

Would it involve insurance?

Would we need a new roof?

Exactly how much does that cost? Will someone rip us off?

Our beloved home is cottage more than 150 years old, so who knows what could be going on in those ageing eaves?

All these questions were running round my head as I contacted roofing companies.

Some asked me to send photos, only to tell me it 'looks fine' (clearly not). Another made an appointment to come out and have a look, then didn't show up.

Then I found Roofcraft. I nervously called, ready to be given whatever bad news or false promises I was becoming accustomed to, but immediately got hold of roofer, Andrew, who said he would come out the next day.

In what was a notinconsiderable victory, he did!

And he was wonderful, jumping into our loft and having a look

around, as well as surveying our roof.

Perhaps most importantly, he reassured us. There was nothing massively wrong with our roof, and we could sleep easy in our beds. Only those who have been confronted with such a situation can appreciate how important those words are.

Andrew explained what could have caused our unrequested living room water feature, and also noted some spots on the beams in our loft he wanted to investigate - and vowed to return in the near future, but not to worry in the meantime, as there was nothing to worry about.

Sure enough, within days, I got a phone call from Andrew and the next day, two members of the Roofcraft team were on our roof, replacing a missing ridge tile (in the spot that 'looked fine', according to our earlier conversation with another roofer), and refreshing some bits and bobs to protect our chimney from any further storms and strangely-angled

rainfall!

They were polite, friendly, helpful and accommodating (it can't be easy trying to get on with your work with an inquisitive six-year-old constantly by your side asking questions), while doing a brilliant job of repairing our roof and, more importantly, putting a family at ease and making them safe.

And it didn't cost a fortune.

We can't thank Andy and Roofcraft enough and have enormous pleasure in naming them a Somerset Leveller Trusted Trader.

New Weston eatery is wowing diners

NEW restaurant – offering treats from Nepal and India – has opened in Weston-Super-Mare and diners appear to be loving it.

The family-owned Gurkha Manor Restaurant and Bar, in Birnbeck Road, is welcoming guests to enjoy dishes that “reflect the rich Himalayan heritage” in an atmosphere “of connection and celebration”.

“At Gurkha Manor, we pride ourselves on offering a unique blend of Nepalese and Indian flavours,” a spokesperson said.

“Our family-run restaurant is dedicated to providing a cosy and welcoming atmosphere where you can enjoy delicious dishes made with care and tradition.”

They said the eatery has a “vision to honour the rich heritage of the brave Gurkhas and bring the authentic taste of

Nepal to your table”.

“Rooted in pride for our culture and inspired by the spirit of veterans Gurkha Manor celebrates the resilience, warmth, and hospitality that defines Nepal,” the spokesperson went on.

“As a family-owned restaurant, we pour our heart and soul into every dish. Each recipe combines the finest locally sourced ingredients with traditional spices imported from Nepal. From the delicate momos to the aromatic curries and sizzling tandoori dishes, every bite carries the essence of our homeland.”

And diners have been enjoying their first taste of the venue.

One social media poster said: “We just had a take out from here, it was delicious. Next time we will sit in as the views are amazing.”

HEERS! A trio of Somerset pubs are celebrating after being shortlisted for a prestigious award.

The finalists in the 2025 National Pub & Bar Awards have been revealed.

For Somerset, the final three are; Ludo Sports Bar & Kitchen, Bath; The Swan Inn, Rowberrow; and The Talbot Inn, at Mells, near Frome.

The awards are organised by trade magazine Pub & Bar, and each year recognise around 100 County Winners from across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In neighbouring Dorset, finalists were; The Dog House, Gillingham; The King’s Arms, Shaftesbury; The Libertine, at Westbourne, Bournemouth; and The Pavilion Arms, Bournemouth.

And in Wiltshire, the finalists are; The Beckford Arms, Salisbury; The King John Inn, at Tollard Royal; and The Royal Oak, Easterton.

Winners in the National Pub & Bar Awards 2025 will be announced during a glittering ceremony at at Big Penny Social in London on June 24.

Supercar giant McLaren marks decade of LT performance

EST of the best is obviously subjective.

There’s an argument to be had whether the emotion of something like a Ferrari is ‘better’ than the clinical engineering precision of a McLaren, but no sane person would deny that McLaren knows how to build incredible cars.

McLaren unveiled the first of its LT supercars in 2015, a designation embodying the levels of performance and excellence that McLaren is capable of, with an added dose of exclusivity.

Ten years, and six iconic cars later, McLaren is marking the occasion with the ‘Celebrate LT’ programme of owner engagement and retailer activities, to run throughout 2025.

Just for a little clarity. Yes, this is the same McLaren of Formula 1 fame, but McLaren Automotive – the brand under which the cars are now built – was only created in 2010 as a

producer of ultra highperformance, lightweight supercars. The legendary McLaren F1 may have come along in 1993, but it wasn’t until the launch of the McLaren 12c in 2011 that McLaren officially entered production car territory.

Which makes it all the more astonishing that the six LT

models in 10 years being celebrated this year, come from a manufacturer that is technically only 14 years old.

I guess all that racing experience came in handy.

The McLaren LT lineage began with the 675LT, unveiled in March 2015 at the Geneva International Motor Show.

The limited-volume coupe

was based on McLaren’s 650S supercar, with the inspiration coming from the McLaren F1 GTR ‘Longtail’ created to sharpen the racing edge of the McLaren F1 GTR – the car that won its class in the Le Mans 24 Hour race in 1997.

somersetleveller.co.uk that exceeded even McLaren’s other series-production models, quickly establishing what is now the McLaren LT philosophy; driver engagement, track-focused dynamics, minimised weight, optimised aerodynamics and increased power, all wrapped up in a car produced in restricted numbers.

Heralded as the most track-focused McLaren model since the 12C road car of 2011, more than 50 per cent of the components in the 675LT’s 3.8-litre turbocharged V8 engine were changed to deliver the increased power of 670bhp.

The 675LT also utilised more complex aerodynamic features than the 650S it was based on, as well as a very significant 100kg weight reduction.

A further five McLaren LT models have followed, with the 675LT, 600LT and 765LT all produced in coupe and convertible Spider form.

The 675LT Spider with retractable hard top was announced for delivery in 2016, introducing truly epic racetrackbred performance to the convertible supercar segment.

Underpinned by the ultra-stiff and lightweight carbon fibre MonoCell tub, the 675LT weighed in at only 40kg heavier than its coupe counterpart, a difference entirely accounted for by the mechanics of the retractable roof.

When McLaren announced the replacement of the 650S with the new 570S, the task of developing an LT based on the new car began again. That task

was completed in 2018 with the arrival of the McLaren 600LT. The development of the McLaren 600LT delivered a car with aggression and an intense connection to the road like no other.

A lightweight, top-exit exhaust system – 12.6kg lighter than the standard 570S exhaust - and aerodynamic package including a large, fixed rear wing heightened the drama of the LT experience.

Inside, the optional SuperLightweight Carbon Fibre Racing Seats from the McLaren Senna demonstrated the 600LT’s race-focussed inspiration and uncompromising approach to performance.

And like the 675LT, an open-topped variant of this lightweight track-bred supercar was also introduced in January 2019.

delivered the same 600bhp from its 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, scintillating driving dynamics, optimised aerodynamics, and dramatic flair. And again, its lightweight carbon fibre construction offset much of the added weight of the roof mechanism, preserving as much of the feel and performance of the coupe as

possible.

McLaren’s most recent LT models, the 765LT and 765LT Spider, took the LT designation to a new level of performance once again.

Based on the multiple-awardwinning McLaren 720S, it provided the platform for McLaren to create the most hardcore LT to date.

Motoring with David Young The 720S was already a supremely lightweight supercar so creating an LT version required a meticulous attention to detail.

From the signature quad-exit exhaust to the application of thinner glass, titanium wheel nuts, and the replacement of door stowage with elastic nets, McLaren engineers were ruthless in their efforts to reduce weight.

In total, a remarkable 80kg was removed from the standard car to create the 765LT. The most recent model to join the LT family was the 765LT Spider that arrived in 2021.

FAMILY-owned Somerset farming business has been honoured with a prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise.

Shearwell Data Limited, based in Exmoor National Park, has been recognised with the accolade for achievements in international trade.

Founded in 1992, Shearwell is a global supplier of animal identification and livestock management systems, providing products and services to assist livestock farmers in managing their herds and flocks.

Plot with planning for homes up for sale

PLOT of land in a Somerset village – with planning permission for two homes – is up for sale, with offers being invited.

The “tucked away” site, in the centre of Queen Camel, near Yeovil, is being marketed by Greenslade Taylor Hunt (GTH), with a guide price of £250,000.

Measuring some 0.82 acres, the plot adjoins Jalna, off the High Street, and GTH said it “offers further development potential, subject to planning”.

Detailed planning permission to change the use of the land from agricultural and for the building of two open-market homes with garages, was approved by Somerset Council in January.

“Both plots will comprise two threebedroom houses each with a detached double garage and individual driveways,” a GTH spokesperson said.

“The development falls within the council’s phosphate mitigation area. This means developers must put measures in place to reduce the impact of new developments on local water courses.

“The so-called N ruling has resulted in

planning applications across the county stalling because of a lack of effective mitigation.

“However, at this site the seller has bought the necessary credits, to ensure the development can go ahead.”
