Mothers’ Union celebrates 150 years Poole man is The Wimborne branch of the Mothers’ Union celebrated the 150th anniversary of the founding of the organisation in style. There were family fun games on the Minster Green, express manicures, hand massages
and children’s entertainment. There was also a visit by two donkeys, much to the delight of the children around. In the afternoon the bell ringers had their famous teddy-bear zip wire drop from the top of the west tower.
Refreshments were served throughout the day in the Minster and a special tea party took place in the afternoon. The event culminated with the cutting of a ‘Birthday Cake’ by Di Hiscock, leader of the local group. Anthony Oliver
and defibrillator skills using the charity’s female manikins, helping them feel more confident to act quickly in an emergency. One participant said: “One of the
things that inspired me to do the swim was the idea that women are not getting equal CPR. “That shocked me to the core. “It was a really joyful event and exactly what we hoped it would be. It was just amazing to see everyone without a care in the world, what an amazing atmosphere!” Last year alone, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance’s critical care team was tasked to 2,738 incidents, with each mission costing around £3,500. Every pound raised through DARE to BARE will help the charity continue providing prehospital critical care to the most ill and injured patients across Dorset and Somerset.
Women bare most to highlight CPR Women from across Dorset and Somerset came together at Vobster Quay for DARE to BARE, a topless sponsored swim supporting Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, while raising awareness that women are less likely to receive life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation than men. Together, participants raised an incredible £24,500 and counting for the charity, helping to fund Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance’s vital work across the region. The event brought together women of all ages and abilities in a powerful show of community spirit. Alongside the swimming challenge, participants also learned CPR
found with £120k cocaine A Poole man has been jailed after officers discovered a large quantity of cocaine and cash. Jake Musselwhite, aged 36, was in the back of a Ford Fiesta when it was stopped in the Longfleet Road area of Poole on April 16 after reports it had been involved in suspicious activity. Officers found Musselwhite with a brown paper bag containing two one kilogram blocks of cocaine. Searches uncovered small bags of cocaine and £1,570 in cash. The estimated street value of the drugs was a minimum of £120,000 and he was charged with possession with intent to supply class A drugs. Musselwhite was sentenced to four years and two months in prison when he appeared at Bournemouth Crown Court. DC Liam Moss said: “We hope this case demonstrates we will pursue offenders relentlessly and take robust action against anyone seeking to bring harm to our communities.”
New neighbourhood health centre opens A new health centre in Bournemouth has officially opened, bringing modern healthcare facilities into the heart of the Winton community. Thanks to a £1.9million NHS investment, Banks and Bearwood Medical Practice, Dorset HealthCare and NHS Dorset have transformed the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council-owned building on Alma Road into a new Neighbourhood Health Centre. The building is the former Winton Health Centre, which carries a covenant requiring it to be used for healthcare purposes. The site has been unused since July 2023 following its closure. It will now be home to Banks and Bearwood GP practice and a range of community health services run by Dorset HealthCare, including: Paediatric services Children’s speech and language therapy Podiatry Leg ulcer clinics Community oncology Heart failure clinics Health visiting, school nursing and district nursing NHS talking therapies for mental health. The site offers on-site parking and excellent public transport links, and forms part of the NHS’s wider commitment to deliver
more healthcare services within local communities, making it easier for people to access the care and support they need closer to home. The site was officially opened by NHS Dorset’s associate director of primary care and neighbourhood health estate

Police appeal Mr Kellogs brings some horse play House care home, in after collision Hyacinth Wimborne, was full of animal when a miniature horse in Ferndown mischief came to visit. A 49-year-old woman has been arrested after a crash in Ferndown on Wednesday, August 26. Police said the crash, involving a black Nissan Qashqai and a silver car, happened in Church Road at around 5pm. No injuries were reported after the incident, though police sent to the scene arrested a woman from Ferndown on suspicion of driving offences. She has been released on police bail as enquiries continue. PC Halle Meeks, of Dorset Police, said: “We understand that details were exchanged between those involved but the driver of the silver car left the scene and we have not yet been able to locate her. “If this was you, please get in touch. “I would also like to speak to anyone who may have captured anything on dashcam footage.” Contact Dorset Police online or by calling 101.

Residents at Hyacinth House were pleasantly surprised to see their new furry friend roaming around their garden as Mr Kellogs from Linking Hearts Therapy Horses paid a visit. General manager Kamila Gagala said: “Our residents have really enjoyed their unusual visitors today. We knew that having the horse here would be a bit of fun for all our residents, especially as some find it difficult to go on many outings in our minibus. “We’re always looking for new activities for the residents and today we’ve seen the seen the enjoyment and the therapeutic influence animals can have.” Resident Jeanette was very excited to see the horse. She said: “I used to show New Forest ponies both riding and using the harness and cart, I won 300 rosettes. “Today was very enjoyable and it was nice to see the horse although a smaller edition of what I was used to!”

Choir seeks new members as Handel beckons
Gardener Charlie to headline festival
Charlie Dimmock is one of the nation’s best-known and best-loved celebrity gardeners, presenting a variety of gardeningthemed TV programmes including Ground Force, The Joy Of Gardening, Charlie’s Garden Army and, most recently, Garden Rescue. She will be the keynote speaker at the finale event of this year’s Planet Wimborne Green Festival ‘Gardening for Wildlife & Wellbeing’ at Queen Elizabeth’s School on Saturday, October 17. You can hear Charlie share her gardening passion and expertise as she enthuses about ponds, creative garden design, and peeks behind the scenes of those TV gardening shows. Doors open at 4.15pm, with Charlie’s talk at 5pm. There will be refreshments available (hot and cold drinks and cakes), and gardening and green stalls to browse. Members of Wimborne Choral Society are looking forward to restarting our rehearsals this month, with an absolutely stunning piece by Handel. Less well-known than his everpopular Messiah, the Society will be performing Israel In Egypt on Saturday, November 28, in the Minster Church, accompanied by the Wimborne Chamber Orchestra. This is a dramatic piece, covering the 10 plagues, the Exodus and the parting of the Red Sea, all being set to

Young opera stars to perform recital
Some of the UK’s brightest up-and-coming opera singers will perform a not-to-be missed recital in the elegant setting of Merley House, on Sunday, September 27. Arts charity Hurn Court Opera, which provides performance and training opportunities for the opera stars of the future, has cherry-picked two vocalists from its prestigious 2025 Singer of the Year Competition to perform. The recital follows the success of HCO’s breathtaking production of Verdi’s La Traviata, which played to packed houses in Christchurch, Blandford and Winchester this spring. The recitalists include Quito Clothier, a 27-year-old tenor from Hampshire, who was the winner of HCO’s Sarah Harrison Prize last year. Quito is joined by countertenor Will Prior, who was the winner of the 2025 Anthony Lowrey Audience Prize and Roger Higgins Second Prize at the 2025 HCO Singer of the Year Competition. He recently graduated with distinction in his Master of Performance at The Royal College of Music and will join the Royal Academy of Music’s opera course in the autumn. On trac for £530 fundraiser The grounds of Pamphill Parish Hall, Wimborne, were bathed in sunshine all day as the venue for the East Dorset Trac Pack’s tractor show to raise funds for two important local charities.Around 30 tractors lined the are, from a vintage 1943 Case to a 2017, 200 horsepower Massey Ferguson. There was certainly no shortage of variation from fine British manufacturers such as Nuffield, Ferguson, Ford, Fordson, International and Massey Ferguson. The Trac Pack ladies did a sterling job taking care of the catering and refreshments all day, making sure the many visitors were fed and watered when required. There was a steady stream of visitors throughout the day and Trac Pack members were on hand to answer any questions or allow youngsters to climb aboard various machines for a memorable photo shot. At the end of the day, £530 had been raised purely by public donations at the event. This will be equally divided and donated to two great charities, the Friends of Victoria
Hospital Wimborne and the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. A by-product of this event was a great day all ‘round for visitors and members alike and also a chance for a ‘catch up’ with old friends. John Maiden

Green fingers Rail exhibition arriving shortly needed to The Central Southern Gauge Group (CSGOG) will be help charity Oholding their Annual Model Disability charity Diverse Abilities is seeking volunteer gardeners to help maintain and develop the outdoor spaces at the Treehouse in Hurn, creating welcoming and accessible environments for children and adults with disabilities to enjoy all year round. The charity is looking for volunteers of all experience levels to join its friendly gardening group, which meets every Thursday during term time from 1pm to 3pm at the Treehouse in Merritown Lane, Hurn, Christchurch, BH23 6BA. Parkstone care home resident’s brings luck to allfemale crew during special sailing wish

Parkstone care home resident took part in a race around Poole Harbour to fulfil her special sailing wish. Chrissie, who lives at Alexandra House in Parkstone, which is run by not-forprofit care provider Care South, spoke to the care home team about learning to sail while serving as a radio controller in the RAF. During her time in the forces, she sailed from Bombay to Singapore with colleagues and wanted to take to the water again to relive those happy memories. Alexandra House contacted Poole Yacht Club, which invited Chrissie to take part in one of its weekly Summer Series races around Poole Harbour. Sailing with an all-female crew aboard Peggy Pepper, Chrissie proved to be a lucky passenger as the boat came third in the race. Chrissie said: “I felt at home on the boat. It was very good. I liked when the boat went up high on the waves. I was a bit scared, but I managed to keep my cool. It was thrilling and I liked the all-female crew.”
Tracey Lee, Class Captain for Cruiser Class 3 at Poole Yacht Club, said: “Chrissie was such a trooper. It was pretty windy during the race, and she took it all in her stride. It was a wonderful privilege to share the evening’s race with her.” The visit was arranged through Care South’s ‘Make a Wish’ initiative, which helps residents revisit hobbies and passions they can no longer pursue without support.
Lana Wright, Home Manager at Alexandra House, said: “It was wonderful to see Chrissie relive such happy memories and enjoy the thrill of being back on the water. As soon as she got on the boat, she beamed from ear to ear, and it was clear to see how much the experience meant to her.” Alexandra House provides residential, respite and dementia care, with a dedicated activities team organising daily events that bring residents together to socialise and build friendships.

‘From feeling lost to living my best life’ ‘I lost the two and a half stone I wanted by May, so just over three months; And, seven months later I am maintaining and living my best life. Police in hunt for burglars after break-in Police officers are trying to trace two people who broke into a property in Ringwood Road, Ferndown, between 11.10am and 11.20am on Wednesday, August 19. Police said nothing appeared to be stolen. A painting of a girl born 370 years ago is one of the highlights of the Charterhouse three-day auction in September. Richard Bromell of Charterhouse said:“It’s a charming 17thcentury Dutch painting of a three-year-old girl holding an apple. “And yes, the apple looks edible today!” Painted in the manner of Caesar van Everdingen this three-quarterlength picture is dated 1659 although sadly it is not known who the child is. For most of this century the painting has been hung on the wall of a Somerset mill house. The owner passed away a couple of years ago and the family asked Charterhouse to first carry out a probate valuation and them to WANTED Books hardback, fountain pens, coins and stamps, costume jewellery. imborne is getting ready to serve up one of its tastiest days of the year as Wimborne Food Festival returns on Saturday 19 September, bringing free cookery demonstrations, tastings, talks, pop-ups, live music and family-friendly food events to the town centre.
A highlight of the countdown is Wimborne’s Great Big Choc Bake Off, inviting chocolate lovers, star bakers and kitchen creatives to enter a chocolate cake competition on the day of the festival. Cakes should be brought to the marquee on Willow Walk, near Waitrose, between 3pm and 3.30pm.
This free festival, organised by Wimborne BID, will run from 10am to 4pm and will celebrate local food, drink and produce from across Dorset. Visitors can look forward to a packed programme across Willow Walk, Minster Green, East Street, Church Street and the Allendale Community Centre.
The competition will be judged by Maggie Richardson and Colin Nash, with cakes marked on flavour, creativity and presentation. Slices will be sold after judging to raise funds for the mayor’s chosen causes, Lewis-Manning Hospice and Waggy Tails Rescue.
At the heart of the day will be the Dacombes of Wimborne Food Theatre on Willow Walk, near Waitrose, where chefs, producers and food experts will share their skills, stories and favourite flavours. The line-up includes Colin Nash, chef at The Colin Nash Restaurant at The Retreat near Christchurch, who will showcase seasonal, sustainable Dorset ingredients in a live cookery demonstration.
The top prize is a Neff pan set worth more than £100, donated by Dacombes of Wimborne. There will also be junior categories for ages 7–11 and 12–16, with book tokens for the winning young bakers.
Cristina Cavalleri, owner of LovItaly Deli and Restaurant in Wimborne and Ringwood, will share Sardinian family recipes, including the secrets of a perfect tomato sauce and amaretti biscuits, joined by pastry chef Sarah Read. Former Great British Bake Off contestant Maggie Richardson will bring baking tips, behind-the-scenes stories and advice on mastering choux pastry. There will also be expert advice from Sali Pike and Ellie Snook from Wimborne’s Renoufs team, who will explain how to build the perfect cheese and charcuterie sharing board, and Pete Miles of Dorset Oysters, who will take audiences from seed to plate with insights into Poole Harbour oyster farming, tastings and simple seafood ideas.

Delaying tactics make mockery of justice The Government regularly promotes the mantra that justice delayed is justice denied. Yet that is exactly what is happening in our local Bournemouth Crown Court. One of my constituents, the victim of an alleged rape, was expecting the trial of her assailant to be heard in August. At the last minute, however, at the request of the defendant, the trial was adjourned. The new trial date given is more than a year away. How can such a long delay be justified? Where is the accountability of the Crown Prosecution Service and the Court Service for allowing such a situation to arise? Postponing trials for significant periods can cause prosecution evidence to be undermined by the length of time between the offence and the trial. Long delays can also result in witnesses no longer being available.
That is why defendants are increasingly playing the system to delay their trials. In another recent Bournemouth rape case a defendant was able to delay justice for over a year by pleading not guilty - a plea the trial judge declared to be ‘absolute nonsense’. That defendant, Mohammed Abdullah, who had arrived in the UK from Syria in 2023 was awaiting trial on bail and able to play the system to his potential advantage and to the detriment of his victim. Although he was sentenced to six years and nine months imprisonment, he will serve far less and may not even then be deported. n The news from BCP Council that it is on course to overspend its budget by £27million this year is breathtaking. What action is being taken to prevent this happening? The press release from the Liberal Democrat council

We were assured that the council was taking ‘a prudent and pragmatic approach’ focusing on ‘putting the basics right and spending

This year’s council tax increase of 6.75 per cent was in defiance of the clearly-expressed wishes of those residents in a consultation last November. 81 per cent of people called for a council tax increase of less than 4.99 per cent, with fewer than one in 10 supporting a council tax increase above that level. Now - despite that excessive increase - it is clear that the council has been overspending massively. Back in January 2025, the Liberal Democrat council was bragging about putting forward a balanced three-year budget in the face of a challenging national financial environment which provided a ‘sound, stable financial future for the council’. As the current council leadership cannot cope, it should resign and hand over responsibility to opposition councillors to rebalance the books.
The young are definitely not ‘lazy and entitled’! There have been many articles, reports and discussion show topics centred around young people and the current job market. The narrative imbedded in the majority is that of young people being ‘lazy’ and ‘entitled’! I can assure you, that anyone actively applying for jobs is not ‘lazy’. If they are seeking a role that utilises their skills, experience and qualifications, that leads into a job that feeds their soul, as well as pays the bills, is not the young person feeling ‘entitled’ to be offered such a role? Sure, many of us have worked in jobs that may not have been our first choice. You took the job because it was employment, it got you out of bed in the mornings, it meant you were a member of society that was fulfilling a role in the job market, which
therefore meant you were a net contributor to your local area and to the nation’s coffers, through the tax and National Insurance you pay. There will come a time though in the young person’s life that the job does need to fulfil a deeper need in order to get them out of bed, day in, day out and that is not entitlement why shouldn’t a young person have that fulfilling job and career? The alternative would be getting stuck in a job, just because you have got used to relying on it for survival and eventually you could be filled with the regret of not pursuing those dream careers you had in mind at school, or when you were studying in further education. As for young job seekers being lazy - have you tried to apply for multiple job vacancies in today’s market? I often speak to the young

If they don’t bag the first, second, third, fourth job they apply for, this process repeats and depletes energy, moral and confidence and their bank balances! are Special open day raises £750 Crafters urged to book
A Dorset charity came up smelling of roses after raising more than £750 at an open garden event. Disability charity Diverse Abilities welcomed visitors to the Treehouse, in Hurn, as part of the National Garden Scheme, raising money to help it support local children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Members of the public were invited to explore the charity’s unique sensory garden and Nature Nook, which provide engaging outdoor spaces for children and young people who access services at the Treehouse. More than 65 people attended the event, taking the chance to discover the gardens while learning more about work Diverse Abilities does to support children and families across Dorset. Funds raised from the day will help children with SEND
tables soon Crafters can unite in their
access specialist sessions and services at the Treehouse, enabling them to build confidence, develop skills and enjoy new experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Francesca Potton, community fundraiser at Diverse Abilities, said: “It was wonderful to welcome visitors and share our gardens with the wider community. “The event was a fantastic

hobbies at a special event in Wimborne in October. The Wimborne Craft Fair is set to return to the Allendale Community Centre on Saturday, October 24, from 11am to 3pm. This year the event is sponsored by solicitors, Harold G Walker. The fair, organised annually by Wimborne Rotary, promises an ‘interesting and varied display of locally made arts and crafts which are all for sale’. Entrance is free of charge to the public who are invited to donate to Rotary-supported charities on leaving. More than 24 tables are available in the Allendale’s Minster Hall for crafters to display their skills, with bookings being taken. ‘King of the jungle’ Mike grows £2k for charity
Leading exotic plant expert Mike Clifford and his wife Tina have raised almost £2,000 to fund the development of a new sensory garden at multi-awardwinning charitable garden centre Chestnut Nursery in Poole. Despite the challenges of backto-back heatwaves, Mike and Tina ensured their Botanical Jungle Garden was in pristine
condition so it could open to the public four times during the scorching summer - with entry fees donated to Chestnut. Plant collector and propagator Mike, who has been featured on BBC Gardeners’ World and in Amateur Gardening magazine, has amassed a treasured collection of thousands of rare and unusual plants from all over
the world, which have taken root in the gardens of his bungalow in Broadstone. The latest donation, totalling £1,900, means that Mike and Tina have now raised more than £12,000 for Chestnut by opening their private garden during the last seven years. Chestnut Nursery, in Kingland Road, is run by mental health
charity Plants and Minds. Adults with life-impacting mental health conditions take part in horticultural therapy, growing thousands of perennials, bedding plants, climbers, shrubs, exotics and hedging plants to sell. From the moment we arrived, there was an amazing sense of excitement and anticipation. It was a place where everyone could switch off from everyday life, have fun and simply enjoy an unforgettable weekend of great music, good vibes, laughter and fantastic people to share memories with in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. There was something special about discovering 15 different stages/dance tents, wellbeing activities, swimming in the lake, paddleboarding, craft workshops, kids area and much more. There was an amazing choice of food and drink, plenty to explore and lots of space to relax when you needed a break from dancing. People were of different ages and backgrounds, yet came together effortlessly. There was a real feeling of happiness across the site, and the crowds were some of the friendliest you could want. And then there was the music without a doubt one of the biggest

highlights of the entire weekend. There was jazz, soul, hip-hop, house, disco, broken beat, drum & bass, reggae, electronic, funk and much more. It brought together some of the best DJs and selectors from across the UK and USA, alongside an international line-up that entertained the crowds through the day, evening and early hours . Even when you weren’t watching a particular artist, you could always find something going on or just sit back and soak up the atmosphere . Fantastic performances included Joshua Idehen, Arthur Verocai and his orchestra, Herbert &
Momoko, Shabakam Yazmin Lacey and many more. We Out Here 2026 was one of those weekends that leaves you with great memories and a feeling that you don’t want it to end.

For generations, learning to drive has meant mastering the clutch, navigating the gear stick and trying not to roll backwards during a difficult hill start. But that familiar experience is changing rapidly. We are approaching a tipping point at which increasing numbers of new drivers will choose to learn and take their test in an automatic car. The figures demonstrate the scale of the shift. Automatic driving tests accounted for only around 4% of practical tests in 2007/08. By 2025/26, that proportion had risen to 29.4%. Manual tests still represent around 70% of the market, so the clutch is certainly not disappearing overnight. However, the direction of travel is clear. This change is being driven by the wider transformation of the car market. Around 83% of new cars sold are now automatic. Electric vehicles are automatic by design, while a growing number of petrol

For many learners, an automatic car is easier to operate. Removing the need to coordinate the clutch and gears allows them to concentrate more fully on observation, positioning, speed and the behaviour of other road users. That does not mean automatic drivers require lower standards or less experience. The priority must always be to produce safe, confident and responsible drivers. Passing the test sooner should never come at the expense of gaining sufficient experience on different roads and in different conditions. However, learners who are ready should not be required to demonstrate skills that are becoming less relevant to the vehicles they are likely to drive.

How long does probate take? ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE When someone passes away, managing their estate can be a complicated process. One of the most common questions asked by executors and family members is how long probate takes. On average, probate usually takes between six and tw12elve months to complete. However, the exact time-frame depends on the size and complexity of the estate. Simple estates with limited assets may be completed more quickly, while estates involving property, inheritance tax or disputes can take much longer. We usually advise that even simple estates can take up to a year to finalise. The first stage of the probate process involves gathering information about the deceased person’s assets and liabilities. This includes locating the will, valuing property, identifying bank accounts and calculating any outstanding debts. This can take several months, particularly if financial records are incomplete, or assets are difficult to trace. Once the necessary information has been collected, the executor can
apply for a Grant of Probate. This legal document gives the executor authority to deal with the estate. Processing times can vary, especially if further information is required. After probate is granted, the executor can collect assets, settle debts and deal with any tax obligations. There are several reasons why probate may take longer than expected, including disputes between beneficiaries, unclear wills, complex financial arrangements, overseas assets and inheritance tax issues. Executors can help reduce delays by keeping accurate records, gathering documents early and communicating regularly with beneficiaries. Seeking professional advice can also be beneficial where an estate is complicated or there is uncertainty about legal responsibilities. Although every probate case is different, careful preparation can make the process smoother. Steering group bovine TB strategy recommendations by Paul Doran MA, VetMB, MRCVs In June this year, the Steering Group of the Bovine TB partnership for England published new recommendations for the bTB control strategy for England. This received some interest but has then been a little overshadowed by more pressing concerns such as the prolonged dry weather, heat stressed cattle, heat stressed farmers and the alarming rise in Bluetongue cases throughout the UK. The steering group includes representatives from APHA, Defra, the British Cattle Veterinary Association, scientific experts and cattle farmers. Both the full document and a summary can be found on the main page of the TB Hub website: https://tbhub.co.uk. bTB is rarely a subject greeted with huge enthusiasm. The epidemiology of the disease can be fascinating, but dealing with the practicalities is frustrating. Given the stress, extra work and financial burden that bovine TB control creates for cattle farmers, and its high prevalence in the South West, it’s often hard not to feel powerless about the situation. I was therefore pleased reading the new strategy recommendations, to find many to be refreshingly sensible. Although cattle vaccination still appears to be viewed as the ‘holy grail’, there are a range of more immediately implementable recommendations as summarised below: Herd Risk Scores APHA produces a monthly TB risk score for every cattle herd in England, but this is not currently published or shared with farmers. It’s suggested the risk scores could be shared privately with farmers in the first instance to help them
understand and manage risk and later be made publicly available to inform risk-based trading. Managing Infection in persistently infected & high risk herds It’s suggested the testing regime which allows a herd to regain Officially Bovine TB-Free status should be altered for persistently infected herds, utilising more sensitive testing to reduce spread of infection through cattle movements & sales once these herds become unrestricted. Resolved IRs Resolved inconclusive reactors (IRs), must continue to remain restricted to the holding for life as is currently the case. The group recommend
removing the option to lift restrictions from these animals via interferon-gamma blood testing. Farmers should be encouraged to manage resolved IRs out of the herd e.g. by sending to slaughter as soon as practical. Use of Ancillary Tests Several methods of testing for TB aside from the skin test and interferon-gamma tests exist. No test is perfect, but these tests have potential to better assess individual animal risk and support herd management, in a similar way to how Johne’s disease testing has been used to reduce prevalence in the national herd. n more next issue
