Greenspace Trail on the right path Planet Wimborne has launched a new walking trail, focusing on areas of publicly accessible greenspace around the town. The trail includes more than 30 sites, including parks, gardens, playing fields, riversides, woods and other natural areas, which provide wonderful areas for recreation and a valuable home for wildlife - and all can be visited free of charge. The Greenspace Trail is one of a series that Planet Wimborne has developed as a contribution to the Wimborne Town of Culture 2026. Mayor Jeff Hart said: “One of the aims of the Town of Culture was to help people in new housing developments feel part of the town of Wimborne, by involving them in cultural activities. “This series of trails has really helped with that, by encouraging people to visit new areas and connecting different parts of the town together.” The trail was launched at the new Rivers Edge housing development, with a speciallycomposed cry delivered by Chris
Brown, the town crier. Adrian Newton, who created the trail, said: “Many people will be familiar with the wonderful riverside walks that we have in Wimborne. “But there are many other sites that are much less well known, including some extensive new greenspaces created as a result of the new housing developments. “How many of us realise, for example, that you can now walk along a Roman Road through part of the town?” Further activities will be
taking place in Wimborne’s greenspaces throughout the summer, as part of a Town of Culture project led by Wimborne Contemporary Arts, entitled Greenspace Is The Place. There will be a series of outdoor singing workshops, and a pop-up art space with ecopoetry writing, nature printing, ecomusicmaking and wildlife listening activities. The events are free to attend and open to everybody. Further information from planetwimborne.org/greenspaceis-the-place.
Garden party is blooming great The Brackendown garden party was a great success. and organisers sent out a big thank you to the many arts and crafts stallholders that attended. Special thanks were extended to the volunteers who helped with car parking. £2,660 was raised for cancer care at Poole Hospital where the money will help to maintain and improve opportunities for complementary therapies. Next year they hope to do it all again on Sunday, July 17.

On Wednesday, August 5, Parley Petanque Club had a wonderful evening entertaining a group of 10 ladies from the Bournemouth Tangent Club, who came to experience a petanque evening. Vice chairman Michael Gray, who organised the event, shared a quick history of petanque with the group. They were then split into five teams, each led by a club member who taught them the basics, such as basic rules, how to hold and throw a boule, before starting their first match. With lots of laughter and friendly competition, many of the ladies showed great potential. After the match, they all headed
to the Curlew pub for a prearranged meal. We are so grateful to Erica, Ann, Julie, Big John, Little John and Paul for their help
and making the evening such a pleasure. Anyone interested in taking uo the sport can call 07748 948696. Michael Gray

News legend captivates
One of Britain’s most respected broadcasters, Kate Adie CBE, enthralled a packed audience at the Allendale Centre in Wimborne with a fascinating evening of stories from her extraordinary career. The event, organised in aid of the Mayor of Wimborne Jeff Hart’s charities, raised funds for Lewis-Manning Hospice Care and Waggy Tails Rescue. The evening was hosted by local broadcaster Nicky Prior; Jeff invited Nicky to conduct
the on-stage interview after being impressed by her interviewing skills. During the conversation, Kate reflected on a career spanning more than four decades, offering compelling first-hand accounts of reporting from some of the most dangerous and defining moments in modern history. The evening gave the rare opportunity to hear one of Britain’s greatest journalists reflect on an exceptional career.

Bike training for adults
Help in the form of training is on offer to give adults a choice of transport for those short journeys. Big Bike Revival is a government-funded scheme administered by CyclingUK and delivered by partners around the country. In north Dorset, BBR kicked off this month with ‘learn to ride’ small group training at Shillingstone School. Aimed at non-riders, lapsed riders or improvers, the two-hour sessions, free to book, are delivered by Dilys Gartside an instructor with more than 20 years’ experience. In addition to the training sessions, BBR participants have the opportunity of taking part in a guided ride to practise their skills in the safety of a group and away from road traffic. Visit cyclewisedorset.co.uk for details.
Cardboard Campout for those on the streets Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s Disability charity, has announced its Cardboard Campout event on Saturday, September 19. The overnight event invites individuals, teams, and organisations to sleep rough for one night in a self-built cardboard shelter to raise awareness and vital funds for those affected by homelessness - particularly people living with disabilities, who are disproportionately impacted. Last year, Diverse Abilities’ advice team supported 300 people with disabilities who had no safe, permanent home. With homelessness among disabled individuals rising sharply - a 73% increase from 2018 to 2022 - this event aims to spotlight the crisis and raise funds to support the charity’s life-changing services. Participants are encouraged to set a fundraising target and seek sponsorship from friends, family, and colleagues. By signing up, participants are pledging to raise a minimum of £100 for the challenge, with the money being split; 80% to Diverse Abilities and 20% to the YMCA. Find out more, sign up and get your fundraising pack at diverseabilities.org.uk/daevents/ cardboardcampout.

Green thinking powers awards win Dacombes of Wimborne is celebrating a landmark night after scooping three major honours at the 2026 IER Awards, one of the UK electrical retail industry’s leading awards programmes. The awards honour everything from exceptional products and business pioneers to high street heroes and customer service. The independent electrical retailer, with more than 100 years of trading history in the town, was named Best Independent Retailer focused on Sustainability Consumer Electronics and Best Large Independent Retailer Consumer Electronics. And the crowning glory was being presented with Best Overall Independent Retailer Focused on Sustainability. Delighted managing director Matt Renaut said: “Winning two industry awards was fantastic but to be recognised as the overall best independent retailer in the sustainability category was an ambition of mine fulfilled.” The success follows two consecutive years of award wins and underlines Dacombes’ longterm commitment to customer
service, technical knowledge and a business plan built around greener, more energy-efficient operations. Judges praised the company’s practical approach to sustainability, including its move to solar power to help run hundreds of domestic appliances, televisions and home cinema displays in its large Dorset showroom. Working with Low Carbon Dorset, a green grant initiative run by Dorset Council, Dacombes
installed 99 solar panels on its roof. The system allows the business to be self-sufficient in energy during working hours, significantly reducing its carbon footprint and helping to protect the business from rising energy costs. The company has also invested in EV van chargers, a Tesla battery, a heat pump, energy-efficient lighting and equipment and an innovative electronic priceticketing system that removes the need for paper price labels.

Strictly Extravaganza dances into 2027 Forest Holme Hospice Charity has officially launched its award-winning Strictly Extravaganza 2027 - fresh from being named Special Event of the Year at the national Emma Awards - as 10 brave local amateur contestants came together for the first time to discover the dances and songs they will perform when they take to the stage. The launch celebration took place at Bourne View Care Home where contestants, sponsors and the hospice charity team gathered to mark the start of their Strictly journey with fizz and canapés. The 10 amateur dancers, who are all fundraising for Forest Holme Hospice Charity, met Championship dancer Oliver Beardmore, who leads the training programme, before discovering the dance styles and songs they will perform on the big night, when they will each be partnered with a professional dancer. Claire Cooper, events manager at Forest Holme, said: “The launch event is always such a special occasion because it’s the moment our contestants discover exactly what lies ahead.” Over the coming months, contestants will take part in intensive rehearsals under Oliver’s expert guidance, preparing for an unforgettable evening of entertainment
while raising vital funds to support specialist palliative and end of life care across Dorset. Claire added “We can’t wait to watch their journeys unfold while raising vital funds for Forest Holme.” Since its debut in 2023, Strictly Extravaganza has become one of the charity’s flagship fundraising events, with the 2025 event raising more than £80,000.

Cyclist Oz to lead charity challenge Stride out to
A team of cycling musicians from the renowned choir and music charity Armonico Consort, led by TV celebrity Oz Clarke, are tackling the punishing climbs of the Jurassic Coast in a fundraising bid to establish children’s choirs and dementia choirs in the region. From September 8 to 11, their arduous four-day challenge takes them from Exeter to Wimborne. Along the route, the merry minstrels will make a number of stops, busking at cafes, pubs and local landmarks, calling in at care homes to bring music and laughter to people living with dementia, and inspiring children through singing workshops in schools. They’ll also give public concerts in Budleigh Salterton (September 8), Lyme Regis (September 9) and Wimborne (September 11) where Oz and Armonico’s professional singers and instrumentalists will perform excerpts from the greatest of all oratorios, Handel’s Messiah, together
support your local church
with the iconic Zadok The Priest. They’ll be joined by special guest choirs from the local area for an hour of music, storytelling and entertainment. Celebrating their 25th anniversary in September, the team are donating their time and talent to help raise vital funds to establish children’s choirs and dementia choirs across the region, bringing
the transformative power of music to people of all ages. This is something Armonico has been doing for many years - including in the Poole and Bournemouth area - and is now building new relationships in Dorset and Devon, bringing its signature school Choir Creation programme and Memory Singers projects to the area.

Ferndown students celebrate exam success Ferndown Upper School students have received their long-awaited results and have performed extremely well in their A-Levels. The school’s headline figures continued to be in line with previous years, with 100% pass rate and half of the students’ grades being the highest possible - A* - B. Standout A Level performances include: lEmily Moss-Holland, who has secured a place at the University of Southampton to read

Standout vocational performances include; lAlice Weir and Elsie Lawton who gained Triple Distinction* and will study Sport Conditioning, rehabilitation and massage at Cardiff Metropolitan University and at Physiotherapy at Winchester University lEvan Goulding and Holly Andrews who received Double Distinction* and a Distinction.
Congratulations also to Matthew Ogbuji for securing a prestigious Degree Apprenticeship with JP Morgan. Headteacher Philip Jones congratulated all of the students, saying: “We’re all incredibly proud of all our students as they celebrate today. “These grades represent years of hard work and dedication. “What is particularly pleasing is the breadth of success across all subject areas, from the sciences and mathematics to the arts, humanities and vocational qualifications. “Their teachers join me in congratulating our students and on wishing them well as they take their next steps. “We look forward to hearing about their future successes”.
Outstanding results and outcomes for Canford School Canford school pupils have achieved excellent A-Level results across the board with 25% of all grades at A* and 87% at A* to B. This compares with 9.7% at A* and 55.8% A*-B nationally. Amongst many amazing results for the whole cohort there were some particular achievements of Canford school pupils this year include: l16 pupils (11%) achieving all A* grades lTwo sets of twins achieving 13 A* between them lA pupil receiving a Conservatoire scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music & Drama lSeveral pupils securing prestigious places at US universities including two pupils securing 100% sports scholarship awards to Drexel and the University of Texas
lOne pupil who has been offered an apprenticeship at Dyson and a place at the University of Cambridge in engineering. Headmaster Chris Wheeler said: “My congratulations and thanks go to every member of the year group, to our dedicated staff, and to parents for the support and encouragement they provide. “Canford is a school driven by culture - a place where we believe that hard work results in success and this year’s A-Level results are further evidence of - and testament to - that belief. “We have invested significantly in the Sixth Form at Canford, including outstanding new teaching and residential facilities, which provide even greater opportunities for collaboration, independence and leadership,
helping our pupils bridge the gap between school and the wider world.” The majority of Canford school leavers are choosing to head to university with 88% of places to Russell Group/Sunday Times Top 12 institutions, including places confirmed at Oxbridge. From a highly-aspirational set of offers, 90 pupils are moving on to their first-choice university destination. Those who aren’t heading to university include pupils who have accepted places at prestigious creative arts institutions, apprenticeships, and at international universities. This reflects the increasing variety of paths that Canford pupils embark on after leaving school and is testament to the school’s commitment to ensuing its pupils are genuinely real world ready.

Food & Drink
Cooking...
Oaty snack bars In our never-ending quest to lose weight, we have had a thought that snacks may be the problem. (I expect that it is more to do with the quantity of alcohol that we consume, although we have halved our intake recently!) With that in mind, I looked for some healthy snacks and came across this one. It does use a bit of sugar, but the rest of the sweetness comes from the apple sauce. We found it to be very filling and not too sticky. I used chopped raisons, although the recipe said dried raspberries, but I guess you could use any fruit. Probably best not to use fruit that is ‘too wet’, as the mixture will get very soggy. Over easter, we had the grandchildren to stay, and one activity they enjoyed was making rice crispy nests for their mum and dad. I had forgotten how easy they were to make, although I am sure the girls got more chocolate on their faces than in the bowl!! I had to stop them
eating sugar off the counter but I did let them lick the spoons. They are very good at sharing, taking it in turns with the weighing and stirring. However, I digress from these oaty snack bars. You can store these for five days in a container and you could put them in the fridge to stop them from going too gooey. Martin said that they could do with more cinnamon and I wondered about putting

ginger in there as well? I guess you could use any flavourings that go with apple. I think I need to make them again and experiment with different favours. Ingredients 10oz rolled oats 4oz granulated sugar 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon cinnamon 2 large eggs 110ml a milk
2oz apple sauce 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2oz walnuts finely chopped 2oz dried cranberries I used chopped raisons Method Preheat oven to 350F. Line an 8-inch square pan with parchment paper hanging over the edge. In a medium bowl, combine the dry ingredients including the rolled oats, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon together in a bowl. In another large bowl, combine the wet ingredients including the eggs, milk, apple sauce, and vanilla extract. Transfer the dry ingredients over the wet ingredients and set aside until flavours blend; about 20 minutes. Fold in the walnuts and cranberries, and spread combined mixture into prepared square pan. Bake in the preheated oven until edges are golden brown, about 25-30 minutes. Allow to cool on wire rack for 5 minutes before slicing. Cut into 16 bars.
will be sold to raise funds for the mayor’s chosen causes Lewis Manning Hospice and Waggy Tails Rescue, turning every bake into a meaningful
contribution to the community. The top prize is a stunning Neff pan set, worth more than £100, generously donated by Dacombes of Wimborne. As well as an adult category, this year’s competition features two junior categories: 7 to 11 years and 12 to 16 years, with book token prizes for the triumphant younger bakers. Mayor of Wimborne Jeff Hart is encouraging young bakers to get involved He said: “We’d love to see entries from Scouts, Guides, youth groups and all young baking enthusiasts. “No experience needed - just enthusiasm and a love of cake and chocolate!” Wimborne Food Festival is organised by Wimborne BID with support from Dacombes of Wimborne. Film captures a lifetime of hospice memories Forest Holme Hospice volunteer and supporter Tiff Watson has shared her personal journey through a professionally-created life story video celebrating family, resilience, volunteering and the lasting impact of compassionate hospice care. Tiff worked with Christchurchbased filmmaker Emma Trim, founder of Chapters, to create the video, which reflects on her experience of living with disability, the support of her husband Dave and her connection to Forest Holme following the deaths of both her parents at the hospice. Tiff has volunteered for Forest Holme for almost seven years after witnessing the care given to her mum and dad during their final days. Speaking about her connection to the hospice, she said:“When my parents were both in Forest Holme, I witnessed care I had never seen before. “It was kind, compassionate
and they always knew what was needed.” She added: “I could never repay the care that was given, so I thought how could I give back and honour them both. “My favourite day is Friday when I volunteer and I walk in with a smile.” The video, which Forest Holme Hospice Charity has shared on its YouTube channel, also explores Tiff’s positivity and determination while living with disability, alongside the love
and support she shares with Dave. Describing herself as ‘super positive’, she says this has always been her ‘secret power’. Reflecting on the experience of creating the film, Tiff said: “Making my Chapters video with Emma was such a joyful experience and the finished video is such a precious gift. “My loved ones can see me, hear my voice and reconnect with memories we shared together.
Your local, trusted care at home provider
“What a beautiful thing to leave behind, a lasting record of your life, your story and the moments that matter most.” Emma Trim, founder of Chapters, previously worked with the BBC and LADbible creating human interest stories focused on resilience, adversity and the moments that shape people’s lives. She said: “I’m building Chapters with a clear purpose: To give people the opportunity to tell their own story in their own words and in their own time.” Using filmed conversations alongside family photographs and home videos, Chapters creates professionally-edited life story videos designed to preserve memories, experiences and personal stories for future generations. Poole care home resident’s special reunion with hospital colleagues ADVERTISING FEATURE
A
care home resident returned to her former workplace for an ‘emotional’ reunion with her colleagues at Poole Hospital. Pam, who lives in Elizabeth House on Dolbery Road South in Poole, revisited the cardiology department at Poole Hospital, where she worked for 13 years. She was joined by her husband, Ian, alongside the Elizabeth House team, to meet up with her colleagues, Athena and Karen, who donned the old uniform that Pam would have worn before retiring. Pam joined the administration team at Poole Hospital in 2000, first in outpatients before moving to the cardio-respiratory department. After developing an interest in their work, she applied for an Assistant Technical Officer (ATO) role in 2003. They looked around Pam’s former clinic room, where she carried out ECGs on thousands of patients during her 13 years at the hospital. She also worked on the wards, performing ECGs and fitting heart monitors for patients. During the reunion,
Athena and Karen talked Pam through the procedure for setting up an ECG, bringing back memories of her time working in the department. The special visit was arranged as part of Elizabeth House’s ‘Make a Wish’ initiative. It encourages residents to share hobbies and passions they once enjoyed but are now unable to pursue without the home’s support. The care home team then works to bring the special wish to life. Donna Moss, Home Manager at Elizabeth House, said: “It was a pleasure to support Pam in returning to Poole Hospital to reunite with Athena and Karen, who were so pleased to see her. It was lovely to hear them sharing stories about her time there. At Elizabeth House, we love to fulfil the wishes of our residents, through the care we provide and by helping them to reconnect with the people and places that are important to them.” Elizabeth House, which is run by not-forprofit care provider, Care South, provides residential, respite, and dementia care.
It features a dedicated activities team which organises a daily programme of events to bring residents together to socialise and build friendships.

Small climate actions make a real difference Last Friday, mobile phones across the country sounded an emergency alert warning of an increased risk of wildfires. While the immediate danger was real, the alert was also a reminder of a much bigger challenge: Climate change. I welcomed the Government’s temporary ban on disposable barbecues, having previously submitted a Parliamentary petition calling for a permanent ban and written to retailers asking them to stop selling them. Disposable barbecues may seem like a small issue, but they can have devastating consequences during periods of hot, dry weather. I also want to see a permanent ban on sky lanterns, which continue to pose risks to wildlife, farmland and emergency services. The heatwave we have experienced this summer has led some people to compare conditions with the famous summer of 1976. But there is an important difference. The drought of 1976 followed a dry
winter and spring. This year began with significant flooding in many parts of the country, including Dorset, before moving into periods of extreme heat. That pattern reflects what scientists have been warning about for years. Climate change is not simply making the UK warmer. It is making weather more unpredictable and more extreme. We are seeing heavier rainfall, more frequent flooding, longer heatwaves and increased pressure on food production, nature and public services. The evidence is clear; the climate is changing, and human activity is driving that change. The question is no longer whether we should respond, but how quickly we can adapt. That is why Liberal Democrats continue to push for practical environmental policies that cut emissions while helping households and businesses. We support greater investment in renewable energy, improved home insulation, stronger support for energy efficiency,
Liberal Democrat Mid-Dorset & North Poole VIKKI SLADE MP and measures that reduce both carbon emissions and household bills. The transition to a greener economy is not just an environmental necessity; it is also an economic opportunity that can create skilled jobs and strengthen our energy security. One of the most powerful contributions to this debate is the National Emergency film, fronted by Chris Packham.
The film looks at the impact of climate change on everything from food and health to the economy and national security. While it does not shy away from the challenges we face, it also highlights practical solutions and reasons for hope. I believe hope matters. People do not respond well to being lectured or made to feel guilty. Real change happens when people feel empowered to take the next step. So my challenge is simple: do one more thing. Whether it is reducing energy use, choosing greener travel options, wasting less food or supporting local nature projects, every positive change matters. Small actions, multiplied across thousands of households, make a real difference. Climate change is real, and its effects are already being felt. But if governments, communities and individuals all play their part, we can build a safer, cleaner and more resilient future for the next generation.
Roma and Sinti remembered in Holocaust service The annual memorial service in remembrance of the Sinti and Romani people persecuted and murdered during the Holocaust, was a late addition to my diary at the start of the month. Organised superbly by the Ferndown-based gypsy and traveller heritage charity, Kushti Bok, a wide selection of contributors provided all of us in attendance with a delicate balance of truth, education, passion, contemplation and warranted condemnation. I cannot stress how important it is to open our hearts and minds, to learning from the lived experiences of those around us, both in the present, as well as that of our ancestors. Kudos to Kushti Bok’s Bryan Keet for his presentation, ‘Romany Origins - A Brief History’ - well researched and packed with facts, truths and quite a few revelations. I thought I knew everything about the Tudors, especially
Henry VIII. Bryan informed us of the king’s abhorration for the gypsy people; passing the Egyptian Act, which permitted the forced eviction, deportation and even death of gypsies. One of his daughters doubled down on this hatred and persecution by being even more hateful toward gypsies than her father was! You will need to book Bryan as a guest speaker (I definitely will be doing so) to find out which daughter! Officiated by Wimborne Minster’s Reverends Andrew Rowland, Roger Redding and Jonathan Herbert and Betty Billington-Smith from Kushti Bok, I was reassured by the way the service interwove the elements of remembrance, prayers and music, with the readings by Lynda Ford-Horne, chairman of the Bournemouth and Poole Holocaust Committee, Kerri Brushett and Karen Packman, both from
Dorset Labour CANDICE JOHNSON-COLE Kushti Bok and Katie Lite, a New Forest Romany gypsy. I was elated to also get the opportunity to hear guest speaker, Ashley Laverne Jackson, founder of PUSH: The Next Generation. She is a consummate professional and polished speaker, who effortlessly
conveys an authenticity and passion for her social change and civil leadership work. Ashley put the Romani and Sinti murders into the wider context of the evil nightmare that was Auschwitz, and the fight for equity, equality and civil rights for all marginalised peoples, that unfortunately, continues to this day. The full Roma Holocaust Service is available on YouTube - please watch when you can. I would rather be part of any solution than the problem. We protect race and religion in the Equality Act 2010 and media misinformation in the On-line Safety Act 2023 - let’s use them both to preserve the rights of our gypsy sisters and brothers and foster good relations between us all. May I also convey my sincere condolences to the wife and children of Professor Jason Arday; may he now rest in peace.

This crowd-pleasing approach isn’t working The new Prime Minister’s crowd-pleasing approach to policy-making isn’t working. He was quick to share his anger and frustration at the impending release of two of the killers of PC Andrew Harper and ordered a review. Under the Sentencing Act passed by the Labour Government in the teeth of opposition from the Conservatives, some 5,000 prisoners were due to be released after serving as little as one third of their sentences. But the outcome of that review - which excluded from those numbers 1,000 rapists and child sex groomers - did not assuage public anger. Electors, quite rightly, remain outraged that PC Harper’s killers are still going to be released early. Nearly a million people have signed an on-line petition thereby prompting the Prime Minister to shift his position again by overruling the decision
of his new Justice Secretary that there was no alternative but for the killers to be released. So far, however, the Prime Minister has refused to support the offer of the Conservatives to work with the Government so enact the necessary emergency legislation to reverse current policy. We have been informed that the Prime Minister may be visiting the South of England before the end of the month. This would enable him to explain his prevarication on the issue of PC Harper’s killers while choosing not to deport immediately up to 10,000 foreign nationals who are still in our prisons. n The Dorset Branch of the National Farmers Union organised a most successful briefing at Hampreston in early August. Times are tough for the farming community. Still smarting from the imposition by the Government of the new
Conservative Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE MP ‘family farm tax’, farmers are facing the longest drought in a generation. It was, therefore, good to witness the stoicism and resilience of those on whom we depend for our food production. Farmers, as always, are doing as much as possible to be selfsufficient but desperately need
the Government to invest in new reservoirs as a necessary adaptation to the consequences of climate change. n Good progress has been made on the delivery of internet facilities in areas such as St Leonards and St Ives which have, hitherto, been unable to access gigabit broadband. Services are now available or imminent for most of the premises within the St Leonards and St Ives Parish. Concern remains, however, that Building Digital UK has still not confirmed its plans to ensure that all the hard-to-reach premises will be connected. Both I and Dorset Council continue to press this point. Agreement on establishing a new telecoms mast on Forestry England land is imminent, with discussions between Forestry England and Atlas Towers Group at an advanced stage. Planning consent will then be the next step in implementation.
Advice for families moving to adult services The transition from children’s services to adult services creates vast amounts of anxiety for families with disabled children as they are facing changes, new services, and new people. Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s Disability Charity, hold regular advice sessions to help guide families through the process. Diverse Abilities supports children and adults with physical and learning disabilities, and wants to make the process easier for families interacting with all the services involved in providing their support and care. The charity has three sessions planned for the next academic year: Wednesday, November 18, 2026 Wednesday, March 17, 2027 Wednesday, June 23, 2027. All sessions are between 10.30am and noon, and are held at Melton Court, 37 Lindsay Road, Branksome, Poole, BH13 6BH. The morning will be a chance to meet with professionals from the NHS, BCP Council and Diverse Abilities, as well as other charities and organisations in the Dorset area. It is also a chance to speak with other parents and carers who may
be experiencing similar situations and challenges. Lynda Larke from Diverse Abilities said: “It’s great to get families together and help them to get the support they need. “When children reach 18, their families are at a cliff edge, everything they have
known in terms of funding and healthcare provisions ends, and the process begins all over again, so we’re here to help make that transition as seamless as possible.” Those interested in attending can register at diverseabilities.org.uk/transitionsdropin, where questions can also be submitted ahead of the event.

Powerhouse princess is latest panto star Bournemouth Pavilion has revealed that Kristel Herrera will be taking to the stage this festive season as the beautiful Princess Jasmine. After her appearance on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, where she left audiences and judges spellbound with her breathtaking audition, Kristel is ready to sprinkle a little extra sparkle over this year’s production. With her phenomenal powerhouse vocals and undeniable star quality, she is set to bring Princess Jasmine to life in a performance full of charm, warmth and memorable musical moments. Kristel joins Coronation Street villain James Cartwright as Abanazar, Noel Brodie as Wishee Washee and Jamie Steen as the outrageous Widow Twankey. Kristel said: “Inspiring others has always been at the very heart of everything I do, so to have the opportunity to be part of a child’s very first experience of live theatre is incredibly special and deeply moving. “There’s nothing quite like seeing young faces light up with wonder, excitement and pure magic, and it’s a real privilege to help create those unforgettable memories. “If I can inspire even one child to dream big, believe in themselves and fall in love
with the magic of theatre, then that truly means the world to me.” Following her appearance on Britain’s Got Talent 2026, Kristel captured the nation’s attention on her journey to the live semi-finals. Her performances quickly gained traction online, reaching millions of viewers and
earning widespread praise. Farming & Environment
Hello there, it seems ages since I last wrote the column - thank you to everyone who has joined in writing about High Mead and sharing their personal stories with you all. The heat continues... the ground is yellow and yet still the weeds grow - how is this possible? Anyway, along with the weeds growing, the horticulture team is being rewarded from months of watering and weeding, as we have an abundance of tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers, beans, peppers, aubergines and more! The farm shop is looking very colourful with all the fruit and vegetables. The hort team had their annual day-trip out which took them

A day at the farm
with Sharon Boden
Sharon is a member of staff at High Mead Farm in Longham. High Mead is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil and nature. We create purposeful roles for our co-farmers, young people and adults, to help create a sense of well-being and self-worth many have never experienced before. Due to safeguarding, the farm shop is the only area currently open to the public all to the New Forest Show. Having entered the vegetable competition, a highlight was being awarded first prize for our peppers and second for our aubergines in the beginner category. Heartfelt thanks to Barbara and Nigel for their enthusiasm and encouragement of our team participating. We have taken on three new hens to add to our small flock and they are producing brown, green and blue eggs, to add to our traditional brown eggs, so why not try some when you get your veg? We have just taken delivery of a clothes recycling bin in support of Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance - this is on a trial. The recycling bin takes bagged donations of shoes and clothing only. You never know when you may be in need of help from
the Air Ambulance so please support this service by donating generously. This week we were presented with a cheque for £500, from a small group of local people, businessmen and retirees from the Wimborne area, call the Wimborne Saxons.
They meet once a month in a local pub or restaurant. It’s an informal social and convivial gathering where they enjoy good food, a beverage or two and lively conversation. More importantly, every lunch helps them support deserving local charities within the Wimborne locale or to charities close to their members’ hearts. To find out more about them visit wimborne-saxons.co.uk. A Saxons spokesman said: “The dedicated staff and volunteers create a wonderful and safe environment for the co-farmers to help produce and experience the delights of the natural world.” This generous donation will be put towards a much-needed irrigation system for the farm plants.

Soccer season kick-off presents driving challenges Football fans are being encouraged to plan their journeys carefully as the new season gets under way, with thousands of supporters returning to the roads for fixtures across the National League, EFL and Premier League. Carlisle United’s opening National League fixture against Worthing tops the list at around 720 miles round trip, with Eastleigh’s home game against Gateshead next at almost 660 miles. Sunderland’s Premier League trip to Ipswich Town is the longest opening-weekend journey in the top flight, at around 580 miles. The National League began on August 8, the EFL Championship, League One and League Two got under way on August 14 to 17, and the Premier League starts on August 21 to 24. The return of football coincides with one of the busiest periods on Britain’s roads. With families making the most of the summer holidays and heading to staycation destinations, thousands of additional football journeys are expected to add to traffic on key routes including the M1, M5, M6 and A1. Drivers can check The AA Routeplanner before setting off. For many away supporters, a full day of driving, congestion and finding parking will
be as much a part of the experience as the 90 minutes on the pitch. Before setting off on a long awayday, motorists should make sure their vehicle is ready for the miles ahead. Those unsure about their car’s condition can book a service from AA Mobile Mechanics at home or at work, with checks covering brakes, tyres, oil and coolant. Analysis of the opening-weekend fixtures

across England and Wales shows some supporters face particularly demanding journeys before a ball is even kicked. Aside from Carlise United’s trip to Worthing, the National League features several other lengthy trips, while the EFL also threw up substantial opening-weekend away days for clubs such as Exeter City, Stockport County, Wycombe Wanderers and Colchester United. Javelin star Mila breaks record again
The top competition, the UK Age Groups Championships, was held at Bedford on the weekend of July 25 and 26. Mila Desborough was again in fine form breaking the javelin record for her age group with a winning throw of 47m40. Elliott Trickey was sixth in the under 16 triple jump with 12m86 . Mila also retained her title in the South West Inter Counties Championships at Exeter the previous weekend with 41m17. Elliott won the triple jump with 12m43. Maisie Robbins has had an exceptional competitive year sometimes winning all three of her league events. At Exeter she won the high jump with 1m40 and the shot with a personal best 9m36. Tilly Pretty won the under 14 girls discus with a personal best 25m56 and Lila Richards did what she does best, winning the under 14 girls long jump with 4m97. There were also bronze medals for Zac Johnson in the under 14 boys hammer 29m96 and for Olivia Eves with 4.56.88 in the under 16 1500 metres. The above photograph is of Mila Desborough accompanied by Lumen Myers of Poole Athletic Club who came second to Mila at the English Schools Championships and was third in the UK Age Groups event. It is unusual to have two athletes from a small county like Dorset competing and succeeding at such a high level. Peter Impett

World’s best on track for town The countdown is on to one of the biggest weekends in British motorcycle sport as the International Wimborne Whoppa returns to Pilford Lane, Uddens, Wimborne, on Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4, bringing together world champions, British title holders and the country’s top grasstrack competitors. Organised by Wimborne Motor Cycle Club, the two-day event has established itself as one of the premier meetings on the British grasstrack calendar, attracting thousands of spectators to Dorset each year. This year’s meeting incorporates the British Youth Grasstrack Championship, the GT140 British Championship, and the prestigious 500cc Sidecar Masters, ensuring an action-packed weekend featuring the very best talent from across the UK and beyond. Heading the star-studded solo rider line-up are current British Masters Champion Chris Harris, newly-crowned World Long Track Champion Zach Wajtknecht, former British Masters winner Andrew Appleton, multiple British Masters Champion James Shanes and local favourite Chad Wirtzfeld, who will all be battling for victory on one of the sport’s most popular circuits. The spectacular 1000cc Sidecar class promises another fierce contest between some of Britain’s leading crews. Fans can look forward to thrilling
wheel-to-wheel racing featuring Terry Saunters / Liam Brown, Mark Cossar / Carl Pugh, and Gareth and Billy Winterburn, whose rivalry has produced some of the most exciting sidecar racing seen in recent seasons. There will also be strong local interest in the 500cc Sidecar Masters Championship, where current champions Josh and Scott Goodwin, from Ferndown, will be aiming to defend their title in front of a home crowd. Their success has made them one of Dorset’s leading motorsport partnerships, and local supporters will be hoping they can continue their winning form. Away from the racing, the International Wimborne Whoppa offers something for all ages. Visitors can enjoy live music, a food and beer tent, trade stands and weekend camping, creating a relaxed festival atmosphere alongside the high-octane racing. Children under 16 are admitted free, making it an affordable family day out.
This year’s chosen charity is Forest Holme Hospice, with fundraising taking place throughout the weekend to support the outstanding care the hospice provides to families across Dorset. Club spokesman Paul Miller said: “We’re delighted to welcome another outstanding field of riders to Wimborne. “Having a World Champion, British Champions and some of the sport’s biggest names competing alongside our local stars will make this one of the strongest Whoppa lineups we’ve ever assembled. “Combined with great entertainment off the track, we expect another fantastic weekend for competitors, spectators and the local community.” The event takes place at Pilford Lane, Uddens, BH21 7AZ, with ample parking available. Admission is £10 on Saturday, £20 on Sunday, or £30 for the full weekend, with weekend camping available for £10. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate.

Printing apprentice collects national award
Apprentice Daniel Mydlowski, from Shaftesbury-based printer Blackmore, has been Highly Commended in the ‘Kathy Woodward Award for Learning’ by the British Printing Industries Federation Limited. Daniel, pictured, collected his award at the federation’s members’ day print reception at the House of Lords. The Award was launched in 2015 in memory of the federation’s CEO, who died in 2014. The award supports individuals working in the print, packaging and graphic design industries to further their careers through learning and professional development. Daniel is the second apprentice at Blackmore to receive an industry award, after Mateusz Sapko won Apprentice of the Year Award in 2023. Daniel’s apprenticeship in PrePress includes file handling, customer file manipulation,
impositions, proofing and quality assurance. Daniel said: “I’m very passionate about print and graphic design. “I’m currently working hard towards finishing my Level 3 Pre-Press Apprenticeship, which I hope to complete in early 2027. “I’m thankful for my apprenticeship opportunity, as it gives me a greater understanding of print as a whole.” Blackmore’s production director Nigel Hunt said: “Congratulations to Daniel on collecting his award at the House of Lords. “We’re incredibly proud of this talented young man, who is already becoming a real asset to Blackmore. “This is a fantastic achievement, and we look forward to seeing all that he accomplishes in the future.” Managing director Andrew Robbins added: “At Blackmore,
we’re incredibly proud of our team and the commitment they show every day. Apprenticeships play an important role in helping us nurture emerging talent, develop new skills and invest in the future of our industry.” Formed in 1900, Blackmore has carved out a reputation as one of the UK’s leading sustainable printers. The firm has won several
awards, including the Kodak Green Leaf Award and the Dorset Chamber Environmental Award, for its environmental credentials; has achieved Certified Carbon Balanced Printer status in partnership with World Land Trust, and also holds the ISO:14001 environmental certificate. The company is committed to achieving net-zero this decade and has invested more than £3million in a solar energy system, electric car fleet, and environmentally-friendly new litho and digital print presses. Blackmore works with a broad range of clients from large corporate companies and world-renowned charitable organisations to local, smallscale businesses. The company also provides a growing custom-printed packaging service. For more information about Blackmore or to get in touch, visit blackmore.co.uk.
