Popular Pat dances her way to 101 Man hit with The Poole community united to help a special Hamworthy care home resident mark her 101st birthday in style.

Pat, who lives at Dorset House care home, on Coles Avenue, was treated to a day of pampering and entertainment to create a special day to remember by a range of businesses who donated their services.

After the Dorset House care home team shared details of Pat’s upcoming 101 birthday celebration on the Poole Community Group Facebook page, local businesses and residents came forward wanting to help make the occasion extra special.

Known for being a rather glamourous lady, her day started with make-up, which was applied by Davinia Fermi of DFMA, before she enjoyed entertainment from local singer Abbie May, a bouquet from Bloom And Bramble florist, cupcakes from the Scrum and Crumb, and a beautiful birthday cake from

local baker Jo Heckels.

This was all in addition to the garden party that the care home team had already arranged, complete with afternoon tea, balloons and decorations, for Pat to celebrate with her fellow residents.

Pat said: “The whole day was a very nice surprise for me.

“I’m just lucky to turn 101.

“I’ve always loved make-up and used to be inspired by the beautiful film stars of the day, such as Joan Fontaine, Greta

Garbo, Olivia de Havilland and Shirley Temple.

“I used to do a lot of dancing including ballet, tap and ballroom dancing.

“Now, I just keep swinging my legs to music and I just can’t stop.

Pat added: “I’m so happy living at Dorset House.

“The staff are so nice to me, and we can have a good conversation.

“The food has always been good; I particularly like the cottage pie!”

A 57-year-old woman has been arrested after a man was hit in the head with a hammer outside a Poole supermarket.

Police were called at 6.35pm on Saturday, July 4, to the Co-op store in Northmead Drive.

A police spokesman said: “It was reported that the victim had returned home and the suspect had left the scene.

“A description of the suspect was taken from the informant and an ambulance was requested.”

They added that the victim was later taken to hospital for treatment to lacerations to his head, though his condition is not described as serious or lifethreatening.

Later, a 57-year-old woman from Poole was arrested on suspicion of assault and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

She has been released on conditional police bail while enquiries continue.

Supportive Rare football boots up for cup town an even Margaret Green Animal Rescue is giving football fans and safer place collectors the chance to own Wimborne Minster Town Council has launched its Safe Places scheme, building on the strong community spirit in the town.

The scheme identifies locations in Wimborne Minster through the Safe Places window sticker and the free Safe Places app, offering an initial point of contact for people in need of support when out and about.

Whether feeling anxious, lost, confused or overwhelmed, anyone in need of support regardless of age, demographic or support needs, can now find a Safe Place providing a friendly, calm location.

Whether someone simply needs a few moments to regain their confidence, help contacting a family member or friend, or assistance in reaching the emergency services if required, Safe Places are there to provide reassurance and support.

Dorset Police has a new chief constable who will take the helm later this summer.

Rachel Farrell, right, currently deputy chief constable, has been appointed to succeed Chief Constable Amanda Pearson, who will retire later this summer.

The move was announced

by Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick, who said: “I am delighted that Rachel Farrell has been confirmed as the new chief constable of Dorset Police.

“Throughout her policing career, she has demonstrated the professionalism, integrity and determination needed to lead Dorset Police into the future.

“Having served Dorset for many years, Rachel understands our communities, the challenges facing modern policing and the importance of maintaining the highest standards while continuing to deliver an excellent service to the public.”

Ms Farrell said: “I’m delighted and honoured to lead Dorset Police, having served

communities in Dorset and Hampshire for over 30 years.

Group thanks stalwart Derek Two Bridges volunteers transport people to medical appointments from the Fordingbridge area.

During the recent Frogham Fair, Two Bridges celebrated the longest-serving member of its team, Derek Ayling.

In Jolly Good Company is a dementia-friendly charity offering uplifting ‘Jolly Days’ across Dorset, bringing friendship, fun activities, entertainment and refreshments to hundreds of older people. One of its most treasured gatherings takes place at Kingston Lacy Allotments Growing Spaces, where guests garden, grow vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers, harvest produce to take home, and enjoy tea, cake, companionship and laughter.

To raise awareness of the charity and welcome more people, In Jolly Good Company will be holding Summer Evenings in the Garden on Fridays, July 17 and September 18, from 5pm to 7pm.

Wildlife theme for orchestra’s church concert

Dances With Wolves, the Waltzing Cat, Hippopotamus Song and many other wildlifethemed pieces will feature at the Wimborne Orchestra’s Summer Concert at St Nicholas Church, Corfe Mullen, on Monday, July 20, at 7.30pm.

Admission is free but there will be a retiring collection in aid of Dorset Wildlife Trust.

The Wimborne Orchestra is a friendly community orchestra of more than 60 members.

New members are always welcome and the orchestra is particularly keen to hear from string players, especially cellists, who would like to join us.

The orchestra meets on Monday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.00pm at the church and there is adequate free parking.

On trail of new drinking fountain A new accessible water fountain has been installed at the Cook Row toilets in Wimborne. You can now refill your water bottles from the tap with fresh drinking water, above left.

Jeff Hart, Mayor of Wimborne Minster said: “It’s great to see the installation of this free water point and we hope, particularly during hot weather, it will be used by both locals and visitors to the town to help them keep hydrated. We know climate change is bringing much hotter weather and how dangerous this can be, particularly for young and elderly people. So, having access to drinking water can

really make a difference for people’s health and wellbeing.”

Wimborne War on Waste trustee Linda Bunting said: “We’ve long wanted to see a water point in the town centre and this will really help to reduce single-use plastic waste.”

Wimborne Minster Town Council is working with Planet Wimborne, Wimborne BID and the Town of Culture, to commission an artist to paint a mural on the wall to highlight the water fountain. n And Wimborne Minster’s trail for June, the Tree Trail, above right, is the sixth in the project to provide a trail a month in

2026 linked to the Town of Culture.

Planet Wimborne, the BID and the town council have worked together to provide a Music Trail, a Pre-Loved Trail, a Historic Green Plaque Trail, a relaunched Bee Trail and a trail linked to the Literary Festival.

All except the event-specific last one will live on after the Town of Culture as a legacy, and there are more in the pipeline to enjoy through the year.

70% of adults in the UK have no Will

The UK is suffering from “wills apathy”, with more than 30 million adults failing to make provisions for when they die.

Dying intestate (without a Will) means the government will decide who gets what from your estate. Not having a Will could also result in Inheritance Tax being due before the estate is released. Grieving families may be forced to take out loans in order to release the assets.

But drawing up a Will doesn’t have to be a daunting or expensive process, a single Will costs £225 and a double Will is £375.

So what should I consider when making my Will?

Executors – the person(s) who will carry out your wishes and apply for Probate. You must trust them implicitly.

Guardians – the person(s) who you trust to bring up your children should the worst happen to both parents.

History festival fans defy heat Despite record-breaking temperatures, history fans defied the heat in their thousands to attend the Chalke History Festival.

With more than 200 speakers and 600 living historians and history interpreters, visitors were spoilt for choice as sold-out audiences listened to household names such as Alexander Armstrong, Mary Beard, Antony Beevor, Al Murray, Harriet Walter

and Anthony Scaramucci.

Sunshades and ice-creams were the order of the day, but the history fans adopted a ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ attitude as thermometers rose and the crowds poured in.

Across the seven days, numbers were in line with the record 25,000 attendees of 2025.

Next year’s festival will run from June 21 to 27, 2027.

Watching Dirty Business and finding out the only way to have truly safe water is to invest in expensive reverse osmosis is shocking. Our water should be drinkable.

In addition we are doing significant damage to our ecosystems and seeing decline in wildlife as a result.

If we lose our wildlife we lose our ecosystem. This cannot be allowed to continue.

We are at times unable to use beaches or surrounding businesses due to concerns of sewage dumping. Unable to live freely, dip toes in rivers, etc, due to concerns about sewage.

We are guardians of this planet and should be protecting all.

If we fail to look after our water we will lose valuable bird life that eats the insects destroying our crops in the summer.

We will lose fish stocks needed to feed the country and beyond. And so much more.

We must make water companies clean up their act and adopt a

harsher commitment to not accept dumping of sewage.

We must make them handle their own water treatment and sewage treatment, not force it on nature and everyone else. We pay to have safe water and we expect there to be no impact on the nature around us.

The system is not working as it should. There is over-reliance on dumping into nature and a comfortable acceptance that water contains microplastics and more, which are all linked to illness and disease.

The water companies need to clean up their act. We need new laws to govern them and we need more enforcement when they break these laws.

It is not enough to fine water companies for dumping sewage into rivers.

They need to no longer be able to dump in the first place.

Sticky pork belly with Vietnamese-style salad & smashed peanuts As our trip to Vietnam was cancelled, we decided to give ourselves a taste of what we had missed by making this slow cooker Vietnamese recipe.

The preparation was easy and I love the fact that you can just put it in the slow cooker and walk away, until you are ready to eat. I am not sure if they have slow cookers in Vietnam, I think they cook on fires and just leave meat to simmer gently for a few hours. I know that the markets and street food stalls always smell delicious when you walk by. Many people say that you shouldn’t eat street food, but given that it’s cooked fresh and for a long time, and right in front of you, we have never had a problem. It’s certainly better than some restaurants when you can’t see how things are prepared and cooked.

It makes us feel that we’re not really tourists but eating like locals.

Ingredients: Serves 6 600g pork belly 6 tbsp hoisin sauce 3 tbsp clear honey 3 tbsp rice vinegar 3 tbsp soy sauce 4 tbsp tomato ketchup 2.5cm piece ginger peeled and finely chopped

1 tbsp salted peanut toasted and lightly smashed in a pestle and mortar For the dressing 1 small red chilli finely chopped ½ garlic clove grated juice ½ lime 1 ½ tsp light brown sugar 1 tbsp rice vinegar Method Heat the slow cooker to High and add all of the sauce ingredients with 50ml/2fl oz water, then stir well.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan and seal the pork on both sides. Add to the slow cooker pot and turn the rashers in the sauce to coat them.

Turn the dial to Low and cook for 3 hours until tender.

Meanwhile, prepare the salad: Toss all the ingredients, except the peanuts, together in a bowl.

To make the dressing, combine all the ingredients and set aside.

When the pork is ready, tip the sauce from the cooker into a small pan. Bring the sauce to the boil and let it bubble until thick and syrupy.

Toss the dressing through the salad and divide it between two plates, then top with the smashed peanuts. Arrange the pork alongside the salad, then drizzle over the sauce.

Serve with coconut rice if you like.

Wimborne open gardens day raises £5,000 Nineteen gardens were opened in and around Wimborne to raise money for Wimborne in Bloom.

Retired powerboat racer, Kim, relives racing days thanks to Castle Dene’s ‘wish’ initiative

A

retired powerboat racer living in a Bournemouth care home was reunited with his beloved boat and former racers to fulfil his special wish.

Kim, who lives in Castle Dene care home on Throop Road in Bournemouth, which is operated by not-for-profit charity Care South, spoke to the team about his former life on the waves which saw him take part in many offshore powerboat racing championships before retiring from competition in 1989. In response, the Castle Dene team arranged for Kim to attend Round 2 of the UK Offshore Powerboat Racing’s ‘Poole Bay 100’ event, where he sat in on the driver’s briefing and met the operations team.

Kim also looked around a range of boats including the 31ft wooden Unipart catamaran that he raced for many years, which was berthed in the ‘wet pit area’ at Poole Quay Boat Haven, as teams prepared to head out to the Muster area. Afterwards Kim, his family and the Castle Dene team then travelled to Bournemouth Pier to watch the race take place.

Kim said: “It was the best day ever. I made so many happy new memories with my

family.”

The special visit was arranged as part of Care South’s ‘Make a Wish’ initiative, which encourages residents to share hobbies and passions they once enjoyed but are now unable to pursue without the home’s support.

Farming & Environment High Mead Farm is an extraordinary place. Its ethos: Diversity, individuality, cooperation, playfulness, creativity and, above all, acceptance.

Alpacas sprawl on the lawns untroubled. Newts thrive in the wild garden. The newborn pygmy goats dance a mazurka on the feet of co-farmers.

From somewhere, the sound of scrap being dismantled and reused. The ferrets are going for a walk. Fresh dill is being gathered in the polytunnel. The smell of Dorset apple cake diffuses from the kitchen. Chickens have got into the craft room again. From the music room, the Belle of Belfast City on fiddle, percussion and accordion with a bit of Irish dancing and much joy.

High Mead Farm. Much joy.

I am a recent volunteer at High Mead Farm. Apart from a bit of weeding, I do sessions on music and art.

There is no need for a lesson plan. Order emerges from playful chaos. A co-farmer plays Ode To Joy on the piano using an idiosyncratic notation system of numbered chords and lettered notes drawn on the keys.

We gather around the keyboard to give full throttle to a heartfelt vocal rendition of Amazing Grace. I once was lost but now am found. High Mead Farm.

In art we are working towards the Self-portrait Exhibition to be viewed by a famous portrait artist.

No, it doesn’t matter if it’s not like the photo on your phone, it’s about how you choose to represent yourself. Go with the flow. Everyone has their own way of drawing; turn off that critical voice from school art lessons.

Freedom. A mysterious hooded

face gazes out almost unseen from dense green shading. A pair of eyes dart across a frenzied splash of a blurred body in movement.

If you want dreadlocks have dreadlocks. A neat, elderly lady smiles self-consciously from the paper. A volunteer comes back in armed with an eraser; to have another go at her mouth. That’s better. At least it looks like me now. It’s great. No worries. High Mead Farm. No worries.

Perhaps everyone needs a High Mead Farm to go to. Time passes and all hands are keeping HMS HMF on the water and it’s full steam ahead. And tomorrow?

The benefits of using NSAIDs in livestock Part II In adult cattle, the use of pain relief has increased hugely within our clients at Friars Moor Livestock Health.

It is no longer reserved just for severe cases such as toxic mastitis or a bad calving.

Some of this uptake has been around treatment and prevention of lameness.

There is some great work by Thomas (2015), showing that the combination of treating a lame cow with trimming, a block, and NSAIDs is significantly more effective than trimming alone.

Thomas’s 2016 paper illustrated the importance of providing this treatment promptly, as the effects were not significant in the chronically lame cow, albeit these cows should be provided with pain relief on welfare grounds.

Work illustrating how mobility improves through the use of pain relief is also really fascinating.

A 10% improvement in 1st lactation heifer mobility was found if heifers were treated at the point of calving with ketoprofen for three days and at every lameness event thereafter (Wilson, 2022).

Again, this work challenges our perceptions of pain and inflammation and makes us

think more broadly about how we should use pain relief within our ruminants.

The increasing use of technology means that we are now capable of detecting painful conditions much earlier.

Early detection allows us to use supportive treatments such as fluid therapy and pain relief at an early stage of the disease, whilst

we determine what is wrong with the animal and whether further therapies are required.

It will be really interesting to see how supportive therapies evolve over the next few years and the benefit this provides to our livestock.

Technology should serve us not manipulate us Few Government proposals this year have generated as much debate as a social media ban for under-16s. Parents regularly raise it in my inbox and, when I visit schools across Mid-Dorset and North Poole, young people have plenty to say about it too.

Unsurprisingly, most parents support tighter restrictions. What has been more interesting is hearing from older teenagers, many of whom reflect on the negative impact social media had on their younger selves. They recognise the problems caused by endless scrolling, addictive design and algorithms that promote harmful content.

But they also worry about losing access to a space where they communicate with friends, explore their interests and access the news in a digestible way. That deserves to be taken seriously.

It is easy for adults to look back on our own childhoods and suggest young people simply spend more time outdoors or talking to friends face-to-face.

Yet the world has changed. Many teenagers travel long distances to

school and increasingly rely on online spaces to stay connected.

This problem is no longer confined to children. Increasingly, adults describe feeling unable to switch off from their phones.

Many of us spend less time reading or concentrating than we once did. Social media platforms that began as ways to connect with friends have evolved into environments where misinformation, AI-generated content and outrage compete for our attention.

The Online Safety Act is improving the speed with which some harmful material is removed, and school smartphone restrictions will give children a break from the online world.

But there are genuine questions about whether a blanket ban will work in practice. Sites like Instagram and Snapchat already operate minimum age limits, yet many younger children still access them. VPNs may make enforcement even more difficult.

That is why Liberal Democrats have argued for a different approach. We have called for

Though I was not awarded the privilege to be our MP for Mid-Dorset and North Poole, I was the only candidate that night who was able to celebrate their party winning the election in their speech and I made the most of that opportunity! nA key former Downing Street official has recently told the media that they felt the Labour Party were not sufficiently prepared for the realities of government and if that were the case in reality, much more has been achieved than any of them could have been expecting.

National Health Service waiting lists are at their lowest in three and a half years; with five million more appointments and prescription charges frozen, renters and workers have new protections and rights, the state pension has gone up and the triple lock, which ensures pensions

Liberal Democrat Mid-Dorset & North Poole VIKKI SLADE MP social media platforms to adopt age classifications, like those used for films and video games. This would place greater responsibility on technology companies rather than children and parents.

At the same time, we must be careful not to cut vulnerable young people off from valuable sources of information, support and community. Many children out of school access education through online platforms, and not all have the home environment to

access the mental health or other support that they need.

For my part, I have already raised concerns about Ofcom’s ability to enforce its existing responsibilities. Whether it is broadband, scam calls, postal services or safety, regulators must stand up for consumers.

That is why I have secured a Parliamentary debate on how Ofcom can improve its performance and public protection. The reality is that this debate is about much more than children. The harmful effects of social media are now seeping into every part of society.

Technology should serve us, not manipulate us. People should be able to choose what they see online, rather than having content selected to maximise engagement and advertising revenue.

This legislation may not be perfect but the status quo is no longer tenable and Parliament is right to act. We cannot sit by while so much of our lives is shaped by algorithms that benefit billionaires and bots, rather than those they are supposed to serve.

Labour’s two-year anniversary is here!

Dorset Labour CANDICE JOHNSON-COLE never lag behind, has been maintained.

The minimum wage has been increased, the two-child cap lifted, free breakfast clubs and term-time childcare rolled out and SureStart will return through the Better Start programme.

Markets are steady and huge

investments have been made in armed forces Veteran Hubs with millions of pounds pumped into bringing armed forces personnel houses up to the high specification standard that they deserve and have been living without for too long.

There is a lot more to do and I expect we’ll all need to do our bit (perhaps taking a few hits along the way), to make life better for everyone in the long run.

This transition of power still has deadlines to adhere to, so we might have a new Prime Minister when you read this or maybe not - let’s see!

Either way, now is the time to build and capitalise on the successes of the last two years and also identify and dissect the not so-successful elements of being a new government and move forward, in collaboration, solidarity and with respect.

Economic legacy of terrifying proportions Keir Starmer’s premiership is ending with an economic legacy of terrifying proportions. In the month of May alone, the UK borrowed £23.3billion, the highest ever for that month.

Even worse was the fact that more than half that borrowing - £11.7billion - was for paying interest on our country’s burgeoning debt. It is, therefore, incredible that Starmer’s potential successor wants to spend and borrow even more while increasing taxes beyond their current record levels.

Every rational economist knows that our welfare bill is unsustainable. Starmer’s government has priced people out of the labour market by increasing National Insurance on employers and preventing people working for less than the inflated minimum wage.

Incentivising people to work by reducing taxation and removing regulatory barriers is essential.

Existing on taxpayer-funded benefits should not be an option

for anyone who is capable of work. n As a member of the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee, I recently visited Aberdeen to hear from local businesses about the importance of oil and gas to our economy.

The visit followed on from the resounding Conservative Party victory in the Aberdeen South Parliamentary byelection where the Conservative candidate gained the seat winning 50% of the vote. The oil and gas industry employs more than 110,000 people and adds £25billion each year to the UK economy. In Scotland one in every 30 workers is employed in off-shore energy.

The Government’s continual assault upon domestic fossil fuel production is a disgrace and I hope that the committee’s visit will add to the pressure on the Government to change course.

I have long campaigned for the repeal of the Climate Change

At a meeting with the minister responsible, I received a green light for introducing a Bill to outlaw complicated contractual arrangements which have the effect of imposing extra costs on residents and even depriving them of their security of tenure. n Another Bill is to require the Government to honour its commitment to provide redress for those who are the victims of Covid-19 vaccine damage. The Covid Inquiry under Baroness Hallett recommended reform of the Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme but the Government has yet to respond.

Other Bills incentivise individuals to take greater responsibility for their own welfare including health and education.

Collaboration grows across charity sector Mental health charity Plants And Minds has witnessed significant growth in demand for its Growing Communities networking events - demonstrating the need for dynamic partnership working across the charity sector in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

In 18 months, the free monthly events, held at Cherry Tree Nursery in Bournemouth, have seen attendance rise from an initial six to 30 delegates.

Born in 2024 as the result of a Community Mental Health Grant issued via Dorset Community Action, the events have become a vibrant hub for connection, collaboration and community support. The events bring together local organisations, community groups and individuals who are passionate about improving wellbeing and supporting people experiencing mental health challenges.

Liaison officer Maria Tidy said: “Held in a welcoming and inclusive environment, the sessions provide a space to share ideas, build partnerships and develop initiatives that make a real difference to the lives of local people.

“The growth of the network reflects a strong and shared commitment to fostering a more connected and compassionate community.

“The network inspires meaningful action, with partnerships formed leading to new projects, better collaboration, increased support services and greater awareness of mental health across the area.

“Together, we’re creating a better community for local people experiencing mental health challenges.”

With mental health breakdown recognised as a key driver of homelessness, Plants And Minds has this spring joined the Homelessness Partnership BCP - bringing awareness of its support and networking events to the partnership’s membership of around 50 local charities and services.

Keynote speakers have included Community Action Network, YMCA and Citizens Advice BCP. Plants and Minds, which supports adults with life-impacting mental health conditions at Cherry Tree Nursery in Bournemouth and Chestnut Nursery in Poole, encourages anyone who is passionate about supporting mental health, strengthening community wellbeing and driving positive change to join future sessions and become part of the expanding Growing Communities network.

Acclaimed director returns with choir

Former King’s Singer, choral director and composer Jeremy Jackman returns to Dorset this August to lead the choir Laudemus, showcasing music for the service of Choral Evensong.

Taking its name from Latin for ‘let us praise!’ and singing in venues across the county, the group has its roots in the Wimborne Arts Festival of 1991.

The choir has returned each year since then to bring

cathedral-style Evensong to country churches across Dorset.

Operating as an annual summer course, singers come from all over the UK and some from overseas. The repertoire is wide ranging, with different music for each service on the tour.

This summer, Laudemus will visit churches in Broadstone (August 11), Lyme Regis (August 12), Trent (August 13), Blandford Forum (August

Why marriage still matters for Inheritance Tax ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

In modern Britain, many couples build committed lives together without ever marrying. While that is a personal choice, the law surrounding Inheritance Tax has not fully adapted to that shift.

One of the key benefits of marriage or civil partnership is the Inheritance Tax exemption between spouses. When one partner dies, assets can pass to the surviving spouse free of Inheritance Tax, regardless of value. For unmarried couples, the position is very different.

No matter how long you have been together, transfers between partners can be taxed at 40% above the available thresholds, creating significant and often unexpected liabilities.

Married couples can also combine their nil rate bands, potentially allowing up to £1million to pass free of Inheritance Tax, subject to the residence nil rate band.

Unmarried couples do not benefit from these protections.

This is not simply a theoretical issue. We regularly advise clients who are surprised by

the exposure they face when planning their estates. In some cases, those conversations are followed fairly quickly by a visit to the register office.

Caesar is an eight-year-old staffie cross. He loves people and would be okay in a home with older children.

He enjoys quality cuddle time, playing tug or ball and having zoomies with a stuffed toy in his mouth. Caesar is nervous of loud noises and fireworks. He likes his toys and is always happy to play - he is currently learning how to give the ball back so we can throw it again!

He will need time and patience to help him adjust. Caesar is not good with other dogs, although he can walk with calm dogs who respect his space. He will need to be the only pet in the home.

Then join the track alongside, a bridleway, leading gently uphill to the north north east for a couple of miles to Tenantry Down.

Most of this stretch is alongside a single vast field, currently yellow with barley.

They could change the name of the parish to Gussage All Barley, however, as an enthusiastic beer drinker, I mustn’t complain.

Towards the top there’s an area of woodland on your left and after a while the path follows it curving round Harley Down to the left, north west, and then enters the wood where they are currently undertaking some clearance and

Soon the path curves right, north and comes to a T-junction with a bridleway.

Turn left and soon you reach another junction where you turn left again.

You’re now on the Roman Road, Ackling Dyke.

Apart from one hill, it takes you in a straight line downhill to the south south west for about two miles.

Unfortunately it is between hedges so you won’t be able to enjoy the wide views of which the Romans undoubtedly had the pleasure.

However, there are lots of wild flowers and butterflies and you might wish you’d brought an identification guide with you.

Eventually you reach the road where you turn left and head south east back to where you started, having walked about four and a half miles.
