Villagers urged to have their say Learn all about People are being urged to have their say on a plan to give people in Sturminster Marshall a bigger say over planning decisions. Sturminster Marshall Parish Council has submitted a new draft neighbourhood plan for examination. The document, drawn up by residents, has been agreed by the council. Neighbourhood plans are intended to guide councils on planning applications, outlining areas for development, design guidelines and more. If the neighbourhood plan is approved following examination, and supported by a local referendum, it will be used to make decisions on applications. Dorset Council, which will decide on whether the plan is accepted, is required to consult on the draft before the examination can take place. People who live, work or run a business in the Sturminster Marshall neighbourhood area have until Friday, March 1, to submit comments regarding the proposed plan. Any comments received will then

New Forest fare

be passed on to an independent examiner to consider, along with the draft. Cllr David Walsh, Dorset Council’s portfolio holder for planning, said: “It takes a tremendous amount of work to put together a Neighbourhood Plan. I congratulate all involved in getting to this stage. “Neighbourhood plans give local communities a real say in how their area should change over time. I would therefore encourage anyone with an interest in the future development of

Sturminster Marshall to view the plans and submit any feedback they may have.” For more details, and to comment on the plan, visit consultation. dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/spatialplanning/smnp. Copies will also be available for inspection at Wimborne Library, the Spar Shop, Station Road and St Mary’s Church, Church Street in the village, during the venues’ normal opening hours. Anyone commenting should let the council know if they wish to be kept informed of progress.

Visitors and residents can find out more about food and drink producers in the New Forest at a new festival on March 9 and 10. Members of the New Forest Marque – awarded to local producers of quality – will be at the National Park Authority’s Awakening Festival, which will feature delicious food and drink, as well as handmade products from craftsmen and artisans. The Roadshow takes place over two days at Everton Nurseries. Entry is free and visitors can turn up between 10am-4pm.

Path reclaimed A popular Sturminster Marshall footpath has been ‘reclaimed’ by Dorset Council’s Greenspace East team to make life easier for users. The path, which runs along the disused railway line, had become very overgrown and the ground was struggling to dry out, said the council. It has removed several Ash trees for safety reasons, and straggly hazel and hawthorn has been converted into a laid hedge.

County leads the country in answering NHS 111 calls People needing medical help in Dorset are urged to call NHS 111, with new figures showing the local service has the quickest response times in the country. Staff from Dorset HealthCare averaged less than 18 seconds to answer 111 calls in 2023.

NHS 111 operators can provide expert advice and arrange for people to access the care they need – reducing unnecessary trips to hospital emergency departments and the long waits which may follow. Data provided by NHS Dorset has revealed

that since April last year: more than 92% of 111 calls have been answered in under 60 seconds; the average speed to answer was just over 17 seconds – currently the best performance of any 111 service in England.

Neighbourhood police meetings

Garden centre firm’s charity boost Stewarts Garden Centres have launched Lewis-Manning Hospice Care as their charity of the year for their Christchurch and Broomhill branches. Hospice staff visited the Christchurch branch and enjoyed a tour of the thriving and bustling garden centre. MD Martin Stewart said: “Our decision to make LewisManning our charity of the year in Dorset was easy because of the affinity and admiration that we have for the amazing work that they provide to the patients and families that they support. “We’re looking forward to getting our whole team on board and engaged with fundraising for the charity in as many ways as we can. We feel lots of synergy with the hospice, and with sunflowers at the heart of their brand we have plans to launch a sunflower initiative in our centres to celebrate them and will become a part of their ‘Grow Some Sunshine’ campaign. “We hope it’ll inspire customers to come on board too! “Every customer at our till points will have the option to donate 10p to the hospice with their purchase”. Corporate fundraiser Nicki Cluley said: “We’re incredibly excited to be working in partnership with Stewarts. They are very well established and highly regarded in the local community. “There is great synergy between Stewarts, the charity and the patients and families we support. “We’ve agreed on some fantastic ideas on how we’re going to work together and are extremely grateful for the opportunity.”

The New Forest Neighbourhood Policing Team will be at Bramshaw Village Stores on Monday 26th at 8am. Vehicles broken into in car park Five cars were broken into overnight in Fordingbridge on January 29/30 in Roundhills Car Park, the town centre and nearby roads. Police say an offender used objects such as stones to break windows of vehicles and then conducted searches. The thief stole loose change and smaller personal items like music tapes and other lower value items. Officers are warning drivers not to leave valuables in vehicles.

Dealers are sentenced A man and woman have been sentenced after dealing cocaine for more than two years. Matthew Appleyard, 31, of Milborne Port, and Sapphire Dennis, 30, of Ferndown, received suspended sentences after officers found and seized a large quantity of cocaine. Village suffers mini-crime spree

Thieves disguised as delivery drivers stole rapeseed oil and frozen fish from outside a Dorset pub. The heist took place between 7.15am and 8.30am on Tuesday, January 30, at the Red Lion Inn, in Church Street, Sturminster Marshall. Dorset Police said a man and woman, who appeared to be dressed as delivery drivers, stole eight containers of rapeseed oil and a delivery of frozen fish. “It is reported that the offenders pulled up outside the pub in a white Mercedes Vito van wearing hi-vis jackets and carrying an empty blue oil barrel,” a spokesman said. “The total value of the stolen items is around £500.” The man is described as being of Asian descent, of skinny build, with short, black skin-faded hair. He was wearing a dark-coloured hooded top with a white inner lining. The woman is described as being of Asian descent, of medium build, with long

blonde-brown hair tied in a ponytail. n And burglars stole cigarettes and alcohol and tried to take scratchcards from the Spar shop in Sturminster Marshall, at around 1.30am on Saturday, January 6. After forcing their way in and taking the goods, the suspects left the scene in a dark-coloured hatchback, believed to be a Ford Fiesta, heading toward the A31. Anyone with information should contact Dorset Police via dorset.police.uk, or by calling 101. They can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously online at Crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling 0800 555 111.

More government Come & Sing at choral society irresponsibility So Chris Chope thinks it’s irresponsible for doctors to strike. The independent Institute for Government’s recent report on public services paints a bleak picture, talking of ‘crumbling’ services due primarily to a lack of capital investment since spending cuts in the 2010s. The Health and Prison services are described as being particularly in crisis. It criticises the Government for failing to negotiate with doctors over pay for many months. This is real irresponsibility! I know a young anaesthetic registrar. They are still training and studying hard more than

12 years after starting medical school, often doing 12-hour shifts, day and night. They care deeply about their work, as do many others, treating seriously ill people. Next year it appears they will be on a basic rate of just over £18 per hour - to say they were insulted and outraged by Mr Chope’s comments is a gross understatement! As for the ‘scandal’ of delayed discharges, universally attributed to inadequate funding for social care - yet another example of government irresponsibility! Robert Westwood Alderholt

On Saturday, February 24, at 7pm, Blandford Parish Church is hosting an exciting concert of new music. Cellist Emily Burridge will kick off with her solo work, Prayer For The Rivers, originally created for Chartres Cathedral. She is then a featured soloist in Karen Wimhurst’s new piece Freedoms, alongside soprano Abigail Fiddik and Palida Choir. Central to this work are lyrics inspired by Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms.

In 2023, Palida, with other UK choirs, commissioned eight black composers to create new songs for a cappella choir as part of a Black Lives Matter initiative. In the second half of the programme, they will give a Dorset premiere to many of these uplifting new works. Weaving the whole evening together will be poetry presented by members of the Wimborne Community Theatre. Gill Horitz Wimborne

Marine photographer Steve Belasco’s talk ‘A Cruise Along the Jurassic Coast’ covered the World Heritage Site from Dorset to Devon. He journeyed by sea, which is by far the best way to view the many wonderful sights along the way. Students and scientists come to study the area and it’s geological formations, parts of which have been used for filming, including Dr. Who and Star Wars.

The talk was accompanied by colourful slides of a variety of wildlife and even the Red Arrows going overhead. County to hand over centre operations

Wimborne’s Queen Elizabeth Leisure Centre will soon cease to operate as it now does as council funding is withdrawn with jobs put at risk. Dorset Council will hand over the running of the venue to owners, the Queen Elizabeth’s School Trust, at the end of March, saving around £500,000 each year. However the Trust, which owns the adjacent school, in Blandford Road, has not reached agreement with a new operator, so has confirmed the centre will change from April 1. The changes come after, in early 2022, the council voted to give trustees two years’ notice they would withdraw from the current management arrangements at the centre at the end of March 2024. At this point, the day-to-day operation of the facility will become the responsibility of the trust. The decision was made because the council subsidises the centre by around £500,000 each year, a spokesperson said, which is

around a third of their overall leisure centres budget. In an area where seven public leisure facilities are within a 20-minute drive of the centre - three of which are owned by Dorset Council, ‘it was considered the spend could not be justified’, they added. Meanwhile, due to the lack of a new operator, the trust has confirmed the centre will cease operating as it does now on March 31.

‘The facilities will still be utilised for the school curriculum and made available for community clubs and groups during non-school use times,’ a council spokesman said. “Future bookings and administration will be managed through the school staff.” Anyone with questions about services and activities from April 1 onwards should email office@queenelizabeths.com,

or call 01202 885233. The centre currently has around 40 permanent employees; nine full-time workers, with a further 31 in part-time roles. Everyone in scope of potential redundancy has now entered a 45-day period of formal consultation with Dorset Council, via 1:1 support and in liaison with trade unions. ‘During this time, those in scope will be kept informed of redeployment opportunities and vacant posts that the council has across its other services (including Leisure Services), where they will be given priority if they meet the requirements of the role,’ the spokesman said. “Dorset Council will work with Initio Learning Trust (which operates Queen Elizabeth’s School) over the coming months to inform current leisure centre customers, user groups, and clubs about what is happening with services and scheduled activities in the future.”

Political round-up

Defence must be priority for taxpayer money Is 2024 the year of maximum danger for the free world and our western democratic values? Putin’s hold on power in the Russian Federation is stronger than it has ever been since he was first elected 25 years ago. Putin’s victory in this March’s Presidential ‘election’ is guaranteed and will further embolden him. This is despite the continuing carnage caused to his own citizens by the illegal aggression against Ukraine in a war which is about to enter its third year. The crisis in the Middle East with the Iranian axis of evil extending its influence from Hamas to the Houthis and beyond shows no sign of resolution. China meanwhile is stepping up its menacing threats toward Taiwan while further tightening its restrictions on democracy in Hong Kong. What is the response of the West

Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE MP to these forces of evil? The United States is preoccupied with its presidential election in November, President Macron has lost his authority in France, Germany’s government is weak and fractured and the European Union is paralysed by the process of the EU Elections this June.

Even Canada’s unpopular government lacks authority pending elections next year. What action can the UK Government take to prevent our enemies exploiting these democratic weaknesses and launching World War III later this year? The first action which we can and must take is to hold our own General Election this May so that by the time of maximum peril in the autumn the UK has a strong new government in place with a fresh mandate to confront threats to national and international security. This is why my strong advice to the Prime Minister is to call a general election in May to coincide with the local elections. Petty internal differences within and between our domestic political parties pale into insignificance in comparison with the global imperative for the UK to take the lead.

As a country we are fortunate that there is a cross-party consensus in support of Ukraine and in support of Israel’s right to defend itself. These elements of national unity need to be expanded to embrace a commitment to making reinvestment in our Armed Forces and defence capability the top priority. It is nothing short of a national disgrace that we have too few sailors, soldiers and airmen/ women for our defence needs. The generous provision of arms and equipment to Ukraine should not have been at the expense of our own needs. There should be no greater responsibility for a government than to ensure the security of its own people against external threats and that must mean, in this time of crisis, prioritising defence over other areas of taxpayer-funded expenditure.

Tories have abandoned our farmers

So, when will the much-needed General Election be? What is Rishi Sunak (and Simon Hoare) worried about? Why don’t they just bring it on? The sensible time would be to have it in May, when there are local elections but Sunak is choosing to cling to power and doing more damage in the process. Sooner rather than later would be a blessing for us all. Whether it’s in three months or nine months, as ours is a rural constituency, Labour’s plans relating to agriculture and farming will be of interest to all – we all depend on our food producers as in many ways they are the backbone of our island nation. Labour has vowed to enhance food security and empower the UK agriculture sector with a significant ‘new deal for farmers’. This includes a target that at least half of the food used in public institutions, such as hospitals, schools and prisons, should be

produced locally. Dorset farmers have been abandoned by the Conservative government and have faced 14 years of broken promises. Labour will work with the sector to deliver better scrutiny of free trade deals with other countries, better public procurement practices to support UK farmers who want to adopt regenerative agricultural methods such as increasing wetlands and wooded areas. A Labour government will seek to deliver lower energy bills for farmers by switching on GB Energy. Labour will lower red tape at our borders, including veterinary and plant agreements to get our food exports moving again and use the government’s own purchasing power to back British producers. The party has set 2030 as the deadline for when it wants UK electricity production to be routinely fully renewable. We will help rural landowners by speeding up the planning process from years to months for

Dorset Labour GERALD DAVIES connecting energy projects to the grid. There are a number of other areas which are rightly of concern to our farmers: Responsible management of greater public access to the countryside so it can be enjoyed by everyone is much needed, while recognising that much of it is an active working environment that the public must respect. British farmers and growers are

proud to produce food to some of the highest environmental and animal welfare standards in the world – standards we know the British people value and trust. No one wants to see high welfare and sustainably produced homegrown food undermined by trade deals. We need to plan for, and reward farmers fairly for their role in mitigating flood risks and protecting adjacent towns and get farmers to commit to the proactive management of our streams and rivers. Too often, the planning system can act to make the rural economy less sustainable – preventing farm modernisation and diversification. Such development would make a farm business more sustainable and reduce its environmental footprint. Our lovely Dorset villages should not be set in aspic but need to be vibrant centres of local vitality with agriculture and allied industries at their heart.

Making the most of children’s early years It is well understood that the first 1,000 days of a child’s life are crucial to their future and that fewer children are starting school ready to learn. There are different schools of thought (no pun intended) about whether early years should have a greater focus on play or learning and there are many who believe that our formal education should start later as they do in Scandinavia, Canada, Singapore and Germany. The UK has a declining birth rate and the rising cost of living – including the cost of childcare – is likely to be a contributing factor. When I was a 70s child, most mums stayed at home, because mortgage or rent costs were affordable on one salary, often taking a part-time job around school hours once children started school. Playschool was often run by volunteers and focused on learning to share, developing routines and starting the basics of ABC/123. When my children were born

Dorset Lib-Dems VIKKI SLADE in the early 2000s, most parents returned to work quickly to help pay the bills, as house prices meant our mortgages were based on two incomes. Families used a combination of family and friends, childminders offering a ‘home from home’ setting alongside nurseries for older children. I noticed a shift away from childminders as my children approached school age, as they were required to provide a more structured ‘education’ and many

stopping, with families shifting to larger day nursery provision. Now, as my children’s generation are becoming parents the situation is more critical, not just for families spending more on childcare than on their mortgage, but for providers who simply cannot make ends meet. Free places are rarely free, because early years settings receive insufficient funding from Government, with families often paying large ‘top-up’ bills for snacks, nappies and lunchtime. Highly-trained staff and low ratios of staff to children are good for child development but business overheads and staff costs mean that nurseries are closing every week, and families are finding it difficult to secure the childcare they need. Ofsted’s own figures show that, compared to pre-pandemic levels, 8,800 childminders and 500 nurseries have ceased business. The first phase of the muchtrumpeted expanded childcare offer is due to commence in April and the secretary of state has

confirmed she cannot guarantee families will be able to access what they need. This looks like another promise broken by the Conservative Government. The Liberal Democrats’ manifesto makes a real commitment to families, building on our work in Government, introducing shared parental leave and pupil premium. We would review payment rates for childcare providers, increase the early years pupil premium and simplify childminder registration. The Lib Dems would also create a ‘toddler top-up’ on child benefit for one-year-olds to help families with extra costs and invest in Special Educational Needs and Disability (Send) funding to support schools and councils with this growing crisis. Proper, long-term funding to support early years is needed if these innovative small businesses and social enterprises are going to survive and if we are going to give children a sound start in life and future parents the confidence to plan their families and build the economy.

Crafting the Perfect Wedding

Flowers

As couples embark on the journey of a lifetime, each element of the wedding becomes a brushstroke, painting the canvas of their special day. From the choice of venue to the intricate details of attire, every decision contributes to the creation of unforgettable memories.

Photography

The Venue Selecting the perfect venue sets the stage for the entire celebration. Whether it's a romantic beachside affair, a rustic countryside charm, or a luxurious ballroom extravaganza, the venue becomes the backdrop that frames the couple's love story.

Attire The attire transforms the bride and groom into the protagonists of their fairy tale. From the stunning wedding gown that leaves guests breathless to the dapper suits that redefine sophistication, every detail speaks volumes about the couple's style and commitment.

The choice of flowers can transform a venue into a fragrant garden of love. From bouquets to centrepieces, each floral arrangement is a brushstroke of colour, adding romance and grace to the atmosphere.

Photography is the art of freezing time. A skilled photographer captures candid moments, creating a visual narrative that will be cherished for generations. Every smile, every tear, and every stolen glance tell a story of love. In the grand tapestry of a wedding, each element weaves together to create a celebration that is uniquely and beautifully the couple's own. It's not just an event; it's a testament to the enduring power of love, a promise to cherish and celebrate the symphony that is their life together.

Rings Exchanging rings is a timeless tradition, and the chosen bands become enduring symbols of the couple's commitment. Whether it's classic simplicity or intricate designs, the rings encapsulate the essence of their everlasting love.

Create Your Own Designs Make your own wedding rings workshop. Private workshops for couples to spend the day creating their own rings in sterling silver or gold.

At my Jewellery & silversmithing studio in Christchurch town centre, I create handmade jewellery and invite couples for a special workshop day to make their own wedding rings. Spend the day learning to craft your own, or each others, wedding ring in either sterling silver or 9 or 18 carat gold. Learn traditional techniques and create unique wedding bands during a memorable day, working with sustainable recycled metals. I work with couples to arrange a suitable date to hold the workshop, Saturday’s or weekdays are available. If creating your own rings is not for you, I also offer a bespoke wedding ring service as an alternative. I also welcome group bookings for Hen party workshops. Spend a morning creating stacking rings, bangles or pendants in a private group. If you would like more information please do get in contact.

significant benefits in terms of greenhouse gas reductions and in cutting energy bills. Battery storage can harvest green energy when available or off-peak, and hold it for when needed. Insulation is part of the strategy. Sufficient loft and wall insulation, draught free doors and windows, double or even triple glazing, even a good pair of curtains can help keep your hard-earned heat in. We also need to be cognisant of the unseen mileages that our lifestyle and habits add to our greenhouse gas footprint. 'Food miles' are a good example with every food transport mile adding to global warming. 'Shopping local' supports not only our appetite but also our local farmers, shops and high street, and therefore our communities. Farm shops and markets, and buying seasonal fruit and veg, are ways of reducing our food miles and environmental impact. Using local

Everyone loves the idea of a meadow, an important habitat, one of the rarest in the UK - we have lost 97% of them in the last century. Beautiful in their variety of wild flowers, meadows can support huge numbers of wildlife species, including bees-pollinators vital to our food production. A small wild flower 'meadow' in a corner of your garden is a step in the right direction... Overall it is about being mindful of the big story, and adopting new habits, all small steps on a journey that we must make to look after the place we call home and the species we share it with. Heat pumps use sustainable energy to generate heating and hot water for your home. With low running costs your household energy bills are reduced, it also removes the

need for fuel to be delivered and stored at home; a common problem for homes that are in off-gas areas and rely on alternative fuels. They operate using electricity (including from alternative sources such as solar power) and produce no emissions, making them much more environmentally friendly than traditional heating systems. Heart-healthy living... and losing weight ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Learn more about what it is and how the diet can help Coinciding with Valentine’s Day, February is National Heart Month and brings with it awareness that 2.6million people are living in the UK with Coronary Heart Disease. Having a heart condition can affect all areas of your life, such as work, family, travel, sex, driving, and even just simply daily tasks such as moving around your home or getting dressed. National Heart Month encourages heart-healthy living and awareness for cardiovascular diseases. Heart and circulatory conditions Heart and circulatory conditions affect people of all ages and from all walks of life. But despite progress, there is still so much to discover to beat the world’s biggest killers. In the UK, someone dies from a heart or circulatory condition every three minutes. Whether it’s losing a loved one to sudden cardiac arrest or coping with the devastating impact of heart failure, far too many of us have felt the pain of heart and circulatory conditions. But with your help, we can give more hearts a chance. Each day your heart beats approximately 100,000 times, pumping 23,000 litres of blood around the body and it is a vital part

of your cardiovascular system. Problems with this system can take many forms but the most common issues are heart attack, stroke, and angina. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) can include illnesses such as heart attacks, strokes and other blood vessel diseases. Unfortunately, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity all increase your risk of CVD significantly. The commonly understood solution to these illnesses is a change in lifestyle. Yes, that means moving more and, for most people, losing some weight. Weight of the nation Research by the team at the 1:1 Diet has revealed that there has been a universal mental shift, as many of us continue to focus on ourselves and our wellbeing. For two thirds of people (66%), this centres on the desire to bring down the number we see when we step onto a set of

Love yourself

scales, by - on average - two stone. The research - drawn from the Weight of the Nation 2023 report - polled more than 3,000 people across the UK and Ireland. It found that 21% of those polled have high blood pressure, 19% have high cholesterol and worryingly, 4% are suffering with heart disease and heart attacks. What’s more, 22% have been told by a doctor to lose weight for health reasons, and with 77% of the nation feeling ‘stuck in a rut’ when it comes to weight loss, now is the time to instil hope for those about to embark on their life-changing journey. Heart conditions and diabetes Mark Gilbert, nutritionist at the 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan, says: “The results of this report are very concerning but the 1:1 Diet can provide a healthy, researchproven, nutritional solution. “Our diet has been shown to help reverse diseases such as diabetes, prediabetes (which more than half the overweight, 40+ population has) and high blood pressure, along with substantial weight loss – all of which are significant risk factors for heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the UK.” Inspired to kickstart your own weight loss? Anniversary attraction set to be a glass act A dazzling display featuring 1,000 handcrafted stained-glass flowers will mark a Dorset charity’s 30th anniversary. The Forest Holme Hospice Charity has announced details of the special attraction, to be installed at Merley House in Wimborne. As well as viewing the display between April 27 and May 2, members of the public have the opportunity to own a piece of the commemorative art, created by artist Ellie Drake-Lee, from Garden Glass Art. The keepsake flowers are now available to pre-purchase via register.enthuse.com/ ps/event/GlassFlowers for delivery or collection following the event. This year marks 30 years since Forest Holme Hospice Charity was set up to raise funds for the then-new specialist palliative care unit based at Seldown Road, in Poole. It was the year Four Weddings And A Funeral became the top grossing UK film, the first UK National Lottery draw took place, and Tony Blair won the Labour Party leadership election. The charity officially launched on April 26 and since then, donations from supporters have helped care for more than 30,000 patients and their families. Formerly known as the Friends of Forest

Holme, Forest Holme Hospice Charity has grown to meet the increasing demand for the hospice services. To coincide with its anniversary, the charity has also announced details of a number of other activities and initiatives taking place throughout the year. They include a £30 For 30 Years appeal, numerous fundraising and challenge events,

as well as the annual Tie A Yellow Ribbon and Light Up a Life remembrance services. Hannah O Hare, charity CEO, said: “This year is an opportunity to reflect on all that has been achieved during the last 30 years, remembering all those whose lives have been touched by Forest Holme, and thanking everyone who has been a part of making the hospice what it is today.”

Felicity on the path to raising £2800

Local woman Felicity Hooper took on an exceptional challenge and ran the whole of the South West Coast Path, a grand total of 630 miles and 115,000ft elevation. Felicity took on the challenge starting in Minehead, Somerset, and ended at South Haven Point, Studland, greeted by friends and family. As well as completing the challenge, Felicity was raising money for the Bike Project, a charity which collects second-hand bikes and donates them to refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK, and for Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s Disability Charity, which makes every day better for children and adults with disabilities. Felicity raised £2,263 plus a further £549 donated by her employer Investec Wealth & Investment. Felicity Hooper commented: “I wanted to raise money for Diverse Abilities as my brother has mild learning difficulties and has used their services in the past. “I know how important it is to have the right support and the right access to education for individuals and their families and I love the fact that the charity’s ethos is to enable the people they support to achieve their full potential.” Diverse Abilities is encouraging individuals

and groups to ‘Do Something Amazing’ and create their own event or challenge to provide exceptional lives for the people supported by the charity. The opportunities are endless, whether fundraisers want to host their own events, take on a sponsored swim or encourage friends to dance their way through a Zumbathon. Those looking to fundraise can create their own amazing activity, or find inspiration and sign up at diverseabilities. org.uk/dsa or contact fundraising@ diverseabilities. org.uk for more information.

As we embark on a new chapter beginning the year 2024 at Footprints foster care, we reflect on the success of our foster carers and Footprints team and get excited for what is to come in the next 12 months. The rewards, the support, the growth and the development - in the last 12 months we have given our readers the chance to see fostering in the words of our carers and social workers. Overall, Footprints has succeeded in providing more than 30 children and young people care; Whether that be long or short term, we were there to help. When carers needed extra out of hours support, we were there to help. When carers needed some respite or childcare, we were there to help. In times of great difficulty and strain on the foster care system, due to a decline of carers within England at 12%, more than 7,000 foster families are needed across the UK to combat the rising demand of children in foster care. Without this, the fostering system will find it hard to place children near to their families as they extend reach outside of counties. Our pledge for 2024 is to continue working for the foster carers and families, providing them the upmost care and support, and hopefully we can publicise the rewards and life-changing benefits of becoming a carer to recruit and help reduce the national shortage. Over the next year we will be looking into some interesting topics within foster care - stay tuned for more! WE ARE HERE TO HELP Join our fabulous team in 2024 and help us to continue providing the best care to children and young people.

What is osteoarthritis and how can we treat it? Recently I have been treating Osteoarthritis (OA) a lot in clinic, I have noticed some of the old misconceptions around arthritis are still out there! So this article is to help set the record straight regarding the myths around OA. Osteoarthritis is the most common joint condition, affecting 520million people around the world. It most commonly affects the knees, hips and hands, but can affect any joint. In normal joints hyaline cartilage covers the end of each bone. Hyaline cartilage provides a smooth, gliding surface for joint motion and acts as a cushion between the bones. In OA, the cartilage breaks down, causing pain, swelling and problems moving the joint. The odds of having osteoarthritis increase with age, but it’s a myth that the condition is an inevitable part of ageing. It’s also a myth that only older people experience symptoms. To help you understand osteoarthritis and manage its symptoms more effectively, let’s bust four common myths about the condition. Myth 1 – Arthritis is purely due to wear and tear on your joints The exact cause of osteoarthritis is still unclear, but it’s certainly more complicated than just being due to wear and tear. A disease process that involves inflammation interferes

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

with how the cartilage repairs itself, but the joint may still be able to work normally, without any symptoms. Myth 2 – Exercise will make osteoarthritis worse This is potentially the most damaging misconception; regulatory bodies state that exercise is one of the three core treatments for osteoarthritis. This should involve both strengthening around the affected joint and general cardiovascular exercise. Strengthening muscles around the joint can improve symptoms by protecting it. Improving general fitness can also reduce inflammation.

If you’re a runner, osteoarthritis is no reason to stop. A recent study including runners and non-runners concluded that runners were no more likely to experience symptoms associated with osteoarthritis. Myth 3 – Pain equals damage Evidence has shown that there’s no correlation between the changes that naturally occur in osteoarthritis and the symptoms that are experienced. If you feel pain, there’s still a huge opportunity for you to control your symptoms. You can be assured that these symptoms don’t necessarily indicate further damage. Myth 4 - Surgery is the only way This stems from the belief that no matter what you do, your osteoarthritis will get worse. Only about a third of people get worse over time but some see improvement in their symptoms of pain and disability. Rehabilitation and exercise prescription is the recommended first-line treatment to advise on the right forms of exercise and ways to manage your pain. If you feel you are suffering from osteoarthritis - then give us a call on 01202 604707 or email admin@ wimbornewellnesscentre.co.uk to book in for a consultation and see how we can help you!

A ‘neep’ way to celebrate at care home Staff and residents at Kings Park Care Home in Ferndown, run by Barchester Healthcare, celebrated National Activity Providers & Professionals Week. Residents and staff wanted to thank the activities team at the home, whose hard work and dedication make a real difference to the lives of the residents living there. As part of the celebrations, activities staff were treated to a lovely box of chocolates and a Thank You certificate for all of their efforts in making the home a happy place. During an afternoon of Burns celebrations, with music, a Burns quiz and a ‘wee dram’, the home’s activities team, comprising Claudia Canosa and Vivian Clarke-Hunt, were surprised when residents stopped midway through to present their gifts and thanks. Jenna May, senior general manager said: “It was

wonderful to be able to celebrate National Activities Providers & Professionals Week and thank our fantastic activities teams for all their hard work by organising something for them for a change! “They had no idea it was happening and were genuinely touched by the residents’ heartfelt thanks.

“They do so much to fill the home with joy for our residents, both in front and behind the scenes and we are so grateful for all that they do here at Kings Park.” Claudia added: “It was such a surprise and we weren’t expecting it! “We were having a wonderful afternoon celebrating Robert

Burns with lots of music and dancing, so this was an added bonus to the proceedings. “It actually made me quite emotional! “I really love what I do and I know Vivian and I were taken back by all the residents’ kindness and warm comments. “Our Burns night celebrations have been fantastic too, with everyone singing and dancing along. “Afterwards we were all celebrating with traditional haggis, neeps and tatties for our supper - the perfect end to a wonderful afternoon for everyone. “Thank you to all the amazing residents and staff for all your support, you are all amazing!’ The home’s varied life enrichment programme keeps residents active, and provides a daily choice of engaging physical, mental and spiritual activities tailored to residents’ needs.

Cooking... Cod Tacos As my readers will know, last year Martin fell in love with his air fryer! We have used it a lot over the past year... some were successful, some were not! We have found that some food manufacturers are now including air frying instructions on the packets! Martin also likes fish, so we thought that this would be a good recipe to try. It was a bit fiddly with the fish, but they were cooked beautifully. We opted for hard taco shells and maybe that was the problem! By the time you had filled it with the salad bits, there was very little room for the fish! Having managed to cram it all in, the next problem was trying to eat it! It was too much to get everything in your mouth

at once, but if you split it down, then you missed out on the mixing of some of the ingrediants. In the end, I had to keep the fish in the taco and eat the salad with a fork! It was very messy, tasty but messy! I think it would be better with beef of chicken , where the pieces wouldn’t be as big. Hey ho, on to the next challenge. We have done quite well with the air fryer, we have managed to cook a Sunday roast in one and it does really good scampi and chips. Martin has perfected toasted cheese sandwiches and it’s great for cooking bacon for a sandwich. Maybe I’ll forgive Martin for being so unfaithull! Ingredients For the fish: 600g cod fillets

with Martha Legg soft or hard shell tacos lettuce tomatoes red onion coriander guacamole

Method Season the cod fillets with salt and pepper. In a bowl, beat the water, egg, flour, baking powder and lemon flavouring. Coat the fish in the batter, then cook in a preheated air fryer at 200 C for 14–16 minutes – it’s important that the air fryer is piping hot as the fish goes in. Check after 10 minutes to ensure nothing burns – mine usually take 15 minutes. While the fish is frying, combine all the sauce ingredients in a bowl and prep your filling ingredients. Assemble the tacos with the fish, salad and guacamole and top with the sauce.

300ml water 1 egg 180g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp lemon zest Season For the sauce: 6 tbsp light mayo 3 tbsp Greek yoghurt 2 tbsp sriracha juice of 1 lime 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp garlic powder To serve:

Hannah’s horticulture... The days are getting longer and we are starting to see early signs of life in the garden from spring bulbs to early blooming camellias. As we go through February, there is still time to continue to take stock for the year ahead, do a little ‘spring clean’ if you haven’t already, as well as tending a few plants which would love attention now to perform their best. Here are a few things to be doing in the next month:

Apple and pear tree pruning Now is your last chance! Take off no more than 20% and aim to keep an open structure to allow lots of light and air and encourage blossom and fruit rather than leafy growth. Remove dead, diseased and damaged branches, and any that are crossed and rubbing on another. Spring clean the greenhouse Clean glass lets as much full

Hannah Hobbs-Chell is a horticulturist and garden designer/consultant. If you have a question for her, email:hannah.hobbschell@ outlook.com including a picture if relevant the end of February. Keep an eye on any emerging broad beans - don’t let those pesky mice or pigeons have a feast from your hard work. Start chitting any potatoes you plan to grow too. n Snowdrops are a great joy of early February, and there are lots of places to enjoy them, notably Kingston Lacy and at 10 Ryan Gardens, Wimborne, between February 8-11 and 15-18, in aid of the air ambulance

spectrum light as possible through, as well as getting rid of any lingering pests, fungi and diseases.

In the veg plot… Sow some early crops of salad leaves and spring onions for planting in the greenhouse at

Prune away! Coppice hazel, buddleia, sambucus etc, and do any remaining formative tree pruning on everything but cherry’s, plums, apples, almonds, apricots, and their relatives as they are prone to silver leaf if pruned at this time of year.

Similarly rhododendrons, alders and laburnum are also prone. Acers can be pruned now too, try to do it earlier in the month rather than later, as they can bleed heavily from cuts if left too late. Similarly, bush roses are perfect for pruning now. You can be very thorough with this – I have more than 80 cultivars (yes, a little bit of an addictive collection in the front garden!), and I prune down to an outward facing bud about 15cm-30cm from the ground every year. Remember, prune to a bud that’s pointing in the direction you want it to grow a branch! Put down mulch before the perennials emerge Mulch is brilliant for retaining moisture, adding nutrients, and promoting a really healthy soil structure for healthier plants. I unapologetically promote this at every possible opportunity! It was a joy to fork through my own soil in early January, having used mulch for several years, and not have it stick to the fork and pull me in as I attempted to turn the soil over. And the worms are in abundance too. I prefer to put down mulch in early spring, rather than in autumn. I want the mulch’s summer drought-protecting qualities, and then the following autumn it can be incorporated by light hand forking, and worms, who will happily do a lot of the work for us! Watch out for late frosts Plants are particularly vulnerable now, as they have started to wake up. Some are keener than others to emerge, and get caught out. I particularly have to watch peonies, pieris, azaleas (the developing blossoms can easily be caught), and, in the greenhouse, overwintered half hardy plants.

Model Railways is a hobby shared by millions of people of all ages. Famous modelling enthusiasts include Rod Stewart, Jools Holland, Pete Waterman, Eddie Izzard, Anne Diamond and Michael Jordan. At the heart of this enthusiasm is a fascination with scale models that reproduce lots of details of the real thing, right down to the rivets and bolts. Enthusiasts come via different routes; For those who enjoy observing real trains, the models are momentos of the romance of railway transport. Some people like to collect, build and run the models of the trains they saw when they were very young, often taken to see them by their grandparents. They build working layouts featuring stations, signal boxes, scenary, vehicles, shops, people and places that they remember or imagine. Others enjoy the research of looking back into our country’s industrial, engineering and railway heritage. But above all they all enjoy combining models

Farming & Environment

A day at the farm with Tiffany Fleming

Tiffany is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of well-being and self-worth that many have never experienced before’. I’m a regular visitor to High Mead Farm, so I have become used to the unusual antics and goings-on, including the team’s extraordinary aptitude for finding use for everyday articles that are seldom, if ever, used for anything other than their intended purpose. But every now and then I still see something that stops me in my tracks. Our staff and CoFarmers have always been adept at recycling and repurposing and you’d be amazed (and amused) to see how some of the things so obviously built to do a specific job can be found doing something completely different. The infamous car-frame chicken roost for example, or the ‘boat coop’; the farm’s animal feed store was previously a lorry trailer - a perfect case of clever

repurposing as it is insulated, has light and power and is verminproof. However, some things on the farm are limited to uses based on their original function. The motorised scooter is quite often used as a tractor and one of the polytunnels also doubles as a bar for events. But, by far and away the most impressive ‘workaround’ I have seen recently was during the cold snap when all the farm’s outside water sources froze and the staff were left with the problem of finding a way of distributing water to the animals. Oddly, animals drink more water in cold weather than warm. Livestock experts tell us that the days when we probably want to stay by the fire are the days we should pay closer attention to water management. With that in

mind and with so many animals to cater for, filling buckets and carting them around the farm was not a sustainable solution. Our quick-thinking team were not stumped for long. The farm’s shower, kindly donated to us by Ferndown Town Council, came into its own. The hose and head were hung out of the shower room window and, when coupled with a length of guttering and a plastic pond, quickly became a

fast-filling water delivery system! With enough volunteers on hand to carry the ‘pond’ around to each animal enclosure, the job was done in no time. Luckily, the freeze didn’t last long, and the thaw arrived just in time to welcome Chocolate and Dahlia, our pigmy goats into their new paddock which is equipped with their very own caravan camp, soon to be creche, as both these lovely ladies are expecting!

The Moon and the Seven Sisters get close Starwatch night sky events with Kate Earl of the Wessex Astronomical Society On February 16, the Moon will be at ‘first quarter’, as it is a quarter of the way through its monthly orbit of the Earth. (Confusingly, the moon looks half-full at this point, so the term half-moon is occasionally, but incorrectly, used). It will also be nearly ‘touching’ the Pleiades star cluster. This is only a chance alignment – in reality the Moon and the Pleiades are more than 2,500 trillion miles apart. The Pleiades star cluster, also known as ‘The Seven Sisters’, is one of the closest star clusters to Earth, and has been recognised by humans as a notable nightsky object for thousands of years, with several cultures timing the beginning of their New Year when this small grouping

of stars first appeared above the horizon before dawn. If you miss it this month, there will be two more opportunities to see the Moon close

to the star cluster later in the year, but this is the most favourable. And of course, these two celestial objects look great through binoculars at any time.

Exploring Stour & Avon...

New Stour & Avon, February 9, 2024 47

with retired Dorset rights of way officer CHRIS SLADE

LYTCHETT MATRAVERS Park near the church, which used to be the centre of the village before the Black Death but is now somewhat isolated. The ancient church is Grade 1 listed and is worth a visit. You might notice in the cemetery several graves of SBS members who had been killed in Afghanistan. Walk up the footpath past the churchyard until you meet a road where you turn right and continue south eastwards, taking a right turn before the village. This takes you south west, then south until you come to and join a bridleway heading west. This takes you across a road to join a footpath that takes you along the parish

boundary, curving round to the right and passing briefly along a road into the next parish.

At a bend in the road, leave it to join a footpath heading east north east through a wood until you join another footpath leading south to meet a corner of a road which you join and head east to meet a road you’d come down earlier. This takes you north east to join the road that takes you east south east through the village. At the end of the village join a bridleway that takes you south south east, Foxhills Lane, to a T-junction where you turn right, west, then to the next junction where you turn right again and head north back to the village where you turn left and head west back to your car. You’ll have walked over seven miles and, if not a muggle, might have found up to a dozen geocaches.
