Isabella swims to achiever award Wimborne teenager Isabella Haynes is the latest winner of the John Thornton Young Achiever of the Year award, funded by Wimborne Rotary.

A pupil at Allenbourn Middle School, and a through-the-knee amputee, her ambition is to become a paralympic swimmer.

The award comes with a bursary of £500 which, Isabella says, will help to make her dream more achievable.

She was first spotted by a British para talent officer when only eight years old, as a disabled youngster of outstanding talent. She went on with determination to develop her skills through regular coaching and training.

Isabella later achieved county, regional,

and national level times, culminating in qualifying last December at the age of 13 for her first national competition, the British para swimming meet in Swansea.

As a result of her performance and having achieved three bronze medals there, she has now joined the Swim England para swimming talent programme.

More recently she participated in the Junior Para Championship at Coventry.

Commenting on the award, president of Wimborne Rotary, Jan Baseley, said: “We are delighted to be able to support such a talented and determined youngster as Isabella, and wish her every success with her future swimming career”.

It’s now illegal to hold a barbecue or light a campfire in many areas across Dorset.

Thanks to a new Public Spaces Protection Order, people doing any of these or who use fireworks and candle lanterns are liable for a £100 fine and all banned items will be confiscated.

Dorset Council says there will be clear signage where these activities are prohibited and has produced an online map to show where they are.

The order is partly in response to the devastating Wareham Forest fire of 2020, which saw 220 hectares of heath and forest destroyed by a wildfire. Started by discarded disposable barbecues, the fire blazed for three weeks and took 150 firefighters and four million litres of water to extinguish.

Learn about law and order Dorset Police has opened its fourth volunteer police cadet unit in Christchurch at the Grange School.

The force says the new unit is an exciting opportunity for teenagers aged 13 to 17 to learn about the law, police procedures and specialist police units while developing a range of skills, including communication, interpersonal and teamwork.

It already has three cadet units, in Poole, Bournemouth and Weymouth.

The units actively see young people committed to serving their community through volunteering and acting as ambassadors for the force.

They are currently recruiting for cadet leaders which includes running weekly meetings, supporting outdoor activities, and policing events. To find out more visit: dorset.police.uk/ recruitment/police-cadets/.

Dorrie still delights... at 92

A former opera singer provided a patriotic start to the ‘Proms’ at her new Dorset care home with a rousing rendition of Land Of Hope And Glory.

Doris ‘Dorrie’ Smith, 92, became a resident of Colten Care’s home Fernhill, in Ferndown in May. Dorrie’s singing ability was ‘discovered’ when she was just 13 by the well-known soprano Mavis Bennett, who regularly performed on BBC Radio where she was known as the ‘Nightingale of the Wireless’.

Dorrie’s daughter, Christina Smith explained: “Mavis, like my mum, lived in Redditch in Worcestershire. “She was a customer at my grandfather’s petrol garage and one day he asked her to listen to mum sing.

“She listened and announced she was a natural contralto who needed very little training. And from that point she took mum as a kind of protégé.”

Over the next few years, Dorrie’s voice was heard several times on the BBC, including on the Listen With Mother programme.

She was also a regular guest of the BBC Orchestra at the Redditch Theatre.

Christina said: “Mavis Bennett wanted to mum to become a ‘crooner’ and perhaps even go on to make records. But my grandfather didn’t think it was appropriate and refused.

“Who knows? Mum could have gone on to become quite

famous. But it wasn’t to be.

“Mum carried on singing in amateur operatic productions and became well known in the theatre, particularly in the role of Queenie in Showboat.

“But I think she always wondered how far she could have gone.”

Dorrie and her husband Norman, a talented pianist, continued to perform locally and went on to open a children’s nursery, where they introduced some of the country’s earliest music and movement sessions.

The couple moved to Bournemouth in the late 1960s and Dorrie continued to sing, accompanied on the piano by her friend, the BBC Radio producer Jimmy Grant, whom she met through a U3A Choir.

Dorrie joined with local entertainer and pianist Mike Sideway for Fernhill’s Proms, which was organised to mark World Music Day. She said: “When I hear music of any kind it stirs something in me and I just have to sing.

“It was always a dream of mine to sing at the opening of The Proms and now I have – at 92 years of age!”

Fernhill residents enjoyed an afternoon of singing along to classical and popular songs from across the years before a delicious afternoon tea.

Dorrie added: “Fernhill has so much music and singing every day. I am also helping some of the carers who love to sing with their technique.

“It was lovely to sing in front of everyone and hopefully they enjoyed it too.”

Fiona Pritchard, Colten Care’s music and arts partner said: “Music has and still does play an important role in the lives of many of our residents across our homes. “Hearing Dorrie sing in her beautiful and still very strong voice, was very emotional for us all.

“She was beaming all over afterwards and went on to enjoy a great afternoon of singing and happy reminiscence with her fellow residents.”

Dream of messing about on the river

Dreamboats Wimborne is now into its 22nd year of offering boats to hire on the River Stour.

Dreamboats is part of the charity VisionWimborne and was set up to provide people with the chance to use the river.

Last year they launched their new row boat Jenny in memory of sadly missed treasurer Jenny Coates.

This year they have bought two new stand-up paddlebards to add to the fleet of rowing boats, canoes and paddleboards.

Gravelled lay-bys on the A35 at Markway Hill between Lyndhurst and Holmsley, and on the A337 at Cadnam will return to nature, following a land-swap deal as part of the Holmsley Bridge replacement.

Hampshire County Council has confirmed that the nine small land parcels of what are described as ‘Highway verge estate’ will be managed for ‘ecological purposes’.

The long-running Holmsley Bridge Works on the A35 in the New Forest were due to have been completed by now.

But the works, which were held up by a nesting bird, are now able to go ahead after an ecologist’s advice that the nest could be removed.

To avoid closures of the A35/ C10 junction, additional lengths of the C10 adjacent to the junction will be resurfaced at this time.

A blooming good show

Wimborne in Bloom, in its 30th anniversary year was a successful event with 22 gardens open including four new ones.

Richard Nunn, chairman of Wimborne in Bloom said: “Wimborne in Bloom takes the opportunity to thank all of the approximately 400 members of the public who visited and supported our Open Gardens Day. “All were rewarded with a lovely day. “Those selling refreshments and plants were well supported and helped boost the amount raised on the day to almost £4,500 - a superb result.

“Perhaps the biggest ‘thank you’ is to those who spent the day taking visitors around their gardens and, of course, spending many long hours prior so that they were in pristine condition.

“We were also particularly grateful to Christopher Batten, Estate Agents for their generous sponsoring of the event.”

‘Bee kind to us’ county is urged

Extinction Bees PIC Members of Extinction Rebellion Wimborne gathered in the centre of Wimborne last Saturday with the message ,Stop Spraying, Save Our Bees,, ,We Want A Pesticide Free Town, and ,What’s Wrong With A Few Weeds?, Wimborne residents recently witnessed Dorset Council spray weeds along pavements and roads outside their homes. One such was James Bullock, a Professor of Ecology, who feared the council might be using glyphosate.

He contacted the council and received a reply from the Greenspace Team East confirming the council does indeed spray glyphosate. The Greenspace Team East said glyphosate was approved by the EU in 2017 after assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

Professor Bullock said: “Since EU approval was given for the use of glyphosate, evidence of harm has accumulated – harm to honeybees, harm to bumblebees, harm to river and pond life. Dorset Council declared an ecological emergency in May 2019.

“Why are they still spraying glyphosate?”

Concerns have been raised by researchers about the harm glyphosate does to

pollinators, and to aquatic organisms, and the World Health Organisation has said glyphosate is a probable carcinogen, in other words a probable cause of cancer.

“We are urging residents to complain to Dorset Council on their ‘Comments, compliments and complaints’ webpage about their continuing use of glyphosate, and to alert their Dorset councillor to their concerns,” added Professor Bullock.

Please help our plan for housing refugees Concerned Dorset residents are spearheading an initiative to house refugees.

The idea came from a member of Wimborne Methodist church who was moved by the plight of Ukrainians fleeing their homeland.

Jennifer Jenkins came up with the plan of paying the rent on a flat for one year to give such a family a start here.

Then it was discovered that there is a hotel in Bournemouth full of refugees from Afghanistan - families whose breadwinner had risked all their lives by working for British troops.

The British government saved them from being murdered by flying them here but they are trapped in the town with little prospect of making new lives.

So the scheme was broadened to pay the rent on two properties a flat for Ukrainians and a larger property for an Afghan family.

Jennifer said: “It has been heart-breaking following the unfolding of Ukraine’s tragedy in the media.

I didn’t feel I could open my home but I really wanted to do something to help so I suggested renting a flat for a year.

“Then when I heard about the Afghan families crammed into a Bournemouth hotel, it seemed only right to extend the idea.”

International Care Network - a Dorset charity which has been settling refugees in the area for over 20 years - will support both families.

So Peace Haven is asking people to pledge £10 (or a multiple thereof) a month for a year.

About a third of the money has already been promised..

St Michael’s Church in Colehill has taken the venture under its wing which gives Peace Haven immediate accountability and transparency.

We need affordable homes

Once again you report on the massive £41million retirement village that has got the go-ahead for planning and is being built in Wimborne, and once again – no mention of social or affordable housing for young/poorly paid working people who are desperate for a home they can afford.

Having looked recently at the flats for sale in the Bournemouth area it is interesting to note that most ‘cheaper’ flats are retirement ones up for resale.

There are very few ordinary

ones, and those available get sold very quickly and are more expensive because of the demand.

We have masses of retirement flats available for resale, lots of new and older care homes, and a very great shortage of low cost/ affordable housing.

The councils and the Government need to fix this – I am sure it would be a vote winner if that’s what they need to make it happen!

Where are these ‘host of local clinics’ for our jabs?

We’ve just had Midsummer Day and I daresay most of the people eligible for a booster jab will already have made arrangements to have theirs.

Vulnerable elderly people with the conditions which sometimes accompany being older, often find it impossible to

deal with a 30-mile round trip, plus associated waiting.

There was no centre nearer to Blandford than Colehill when my husband booked.

I would love to know what the health authority exactly means by ‘a host

of other local clinics’.

I have complained about the lack of vaccination facilities here, but had neither an explanation nor an apology for treating Blandford folks as an afterthought.

It’s time for Putin to put Free digital help is here away the knuckledusters

At the time of writing this about the Russian/Ukraine war the Ukrainians have withdrawn from Luhansk and set up a new front line that is easier to defend.

It is my assumption that Russia will now be faced with a considerably harder task with hit-and-run tactics used by the Ukrainian military.

It involves a tactical doctrine of using short surprise attacks, withdrawing before the enemy can respond in force and constantly manoeuvring to avoid full engagement with the enemy.

The purpose is not to decisively defeat the enemy or capture territory, but to weaken enemy forces over time through raids, harassment and skirmishes.

In 1994 Ukraine signed the trilateral agreement with the US, the UK and Russia under which Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal in return for security.

Russia exploited Ukraine’s vulnerability when it attacked.

And that is the reason why the US and Britain (Nato) are helping Ukraine.

Not many people know that judging by some internet bloggers.

Some good examples of super powers being brought to heel by hit-and-run campaigns are the Afghanistan rebel forces defeating the former Soviet Union in the Afghan war.

And how during the Vietnam War the Viet Cong forces used hit-and-run tactics to great effectiveness against US military forces that were eventually forced to leave.

Even China which attempted to take over North Korea thought twice before realising it was a conflict they could never win.

Its time for Putin to put away his knuckledusters and go quietly before Russia is once again humiliated.

Welcome return for popular flower show The long-standing Poole Flower Show is to relaunch, post the pandemic, and will run over two days, from August 27 to 28, at the Hamworthy Club, Magna Rd, Canford Magna,.

Sponsored by Compton Acres, the popular show will be raising funds for Lewis-Manning Hospice Care.

The show is being organised by husband-and-wife team, David and Pam Bassil, who have done so for more than 20 years.

David said: “The show has been a part of the local show calendar for many years and everyone is thrilled that it is restarting as it’s been sorely missed.

“Exhibitors are already growing flowers. There will be different classes for judging, including flowers, fruit and vegetables, floral arrangements and pot plants. There will be 139 different classes in total and lots of trophies to award!”

“There will also be handicraft, cookery and children’s classes.

“Poole Flower Show is very fortunate to have some well-known local faces to assist with judging. Names include dahlias judge, Gwynne Davis, who’s a renowned horticulturist.

“John Lockwood will be judging the

fruit and vegetables categories. He is a former horticultural officer at Poole Council with a breadth of knowledge and passion for his subject.

“Marion Martin will judge pot plants and cut flowers categories. She’s a long-standing judge who also runs the Busy Bees gardening club on Canford Heath.”

Making a mockery of our asylum system Constituents are right to be angry and frustrated by the Government’s inability to reduce the number of migrants arriving illegally on our shores.

The people smugglers and their clients continue to make a mockery of an asylum system designed to provide refuge for those genuinely fleeing persecution.

The 600 Ukrainians who have already been housed in Dorset are examples of those whom the public wish to assist.

By contrast there is little sympathy for those economic migrants who resort to illegal entry and thereby queuejump all those patiently waiting for their visa applications to be processed.

Few will be aware that four hotels in Bournemouth have been block booked as part of the Home Office’s dispersal policy for asylum claimants over the last ten months.

Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE MP These hotels provide accommodation for approximately 425 asylum seekers at any one time. The delays in investigating their claims and an inability to deport those whose claims are rejected are adding to the problems being created.

The latest ‘wheeze’ of some of these migrants is to pretend that they are under 18 years of age, despite that

issue having been addressed when they were first screened on arrival in the UK. The law states that, as soon as someone raises a question about their age, the local council is required to make detailed investigations and, during that period, quite often provide special accommodation tailored for unaccompanied asylumseeking children.

To date, BCP Council has had 70 such cases adding to the burden on its services to children, already judged by Ofsted, as being ‘inadequate’. n Another example of a national policy with local implications is the decision of the Government to extend for two years the regime of tariffs and other restrictions upon imports of steel.

ReidSteel is the largest private sector employer in Christchurch and manufactures and supplies large steel structures

across the globe. While welcoming the Government’s announcement of a temporary extension of protection for the UK’s steel industry, I asked the Secretary of State ‘what will happen in two years’ time’ and whether ReidSteel would, by then, be able to receive supplies of the ‘clean, green’ British steel which the Government is seeking to promote.

Unfortunately the Secretary of State was unable to provide a coherent response.

This must put into question the Government’s obsession with ‘net zero.

If the consequence of that policy is to make UK steel uncompetitively expensive, it should be abandoned.

While a short-term fix may be welcome, there is an urgent need for the costs of all the Government’s ‘net zero’ policies to be properly evaluated against their benefits.

What did for Johnson... was being Johnson So it’s over. Almost. The man who considered himself an exception to the rules of politics and life – well, his political career ends in failure like the rest.

Alexander (his real first name) the Great he is not.

It’s not a foreign policy failure that did for him, like Eden. Nor an economic failure, like Heath, nor domestic division as brought down Thatcher. To the contrary, Johnson’s Tories kept him in 10 Downing Street whilst taxes piled up, the economy flatlined, tens of thousands of citizens needlessly died and Britain’s standing in the world diminished.

In the end, what did for Johnson was Johnson just being Johnson – a contemptible, lying charlatan.

Fittingly, it was mendacity arising from a sexual assault in the cradle of conservatism, the Carlton Club, that brought him down.

Amid the tumult surrounding his demise, we must not forget the fact that the Conservative party

knew exactly what he was like (exhibit A – Brexit lies), yet put him up for prime minister, and sustained him there for nearly three years.

Many people across Dorset and the surrounding shires find it disgraceful that our local MPs, Messers Hoare, Loder et al stayed silent on Johnson’s failures and misdemeanours for so long, before joining, as Keir Starmer put it, ‘the sinking ships fleeing the rat.’

My personal favourite was Andrew Murrison’s hasty resignation as trade envoy. Have a look on his Twitter – he didn’t even have time to take a legible scan of his resignation letter amid the avalanche of newlyfound consciences, such was his Damascene haste.

Save some contempt for North Wiltshire’s Michelle Donelan.

Despite already attending cabinet as Universities minister, and thereby having had ample

Dorset Labour GREG WILLIAMS opportunity to tell Johnson what she thought of him, she took a promotion to Education Secretary only to quit 36 hours later.

She’s eligible for a £16,000 extra pay-out for her troubles. These people who aided and abetted Johnson should be consigned to the backbenches forever, not enriched.

Pfeffel the Awful, the Tories have decided to keep him in place for another two months whilst they have an internal, navel gazing, battle royale of a leadership contest.

That’s right – they all think he’s too disreputable to be PM, but they’re happy to leave him in place whilst they fight each other for the spoils of his demise.

And then, in an undemocratic coup de grace, the next PM will be chosen by approximately 150,000 Conservative party members.

I don’t think anyone would argue that membership is reflective of British society.

Terrible. Just terrible. Enough is enough. It’s not just Johnson who needs to go, but the whole rotten party who put him there and conveniently misplaced their morals, those few they have, for three years.

We need a general election, and a change of government.

The contents of Hillcrest, Church Lane, Charlton Marshall, Blandford DT11 9NX, are going under the Charterhouse auction gavel on Wednesday, July 27.

“We have been instructed to auction about 98 % of the contents at Hillcrest, a threestorey country house, all being sold entirely without reserve,” said Richard Bromell of Charterhouse. “Although the house is not a Palladian property the contents are certainly that of a country house with 18th-century walnut furniture and garden statuary through to a library of 1,000’s of books.”

In the house, which is accessed via an unmade track and located at the top of a hill, is a vast array of furniture, ceramics, glass, pictures, silver, jewellery and books.

Charity staff prevail despite Pandemic

Employees at Dorset’s Disability Charity Diverse Abilities have completed their qualifications, despite challenges and changes to learning during the Pandemic.

A group of 14 started qualifications in Health and Social Care Level 2, Level 3 Residential Childcare Services, Level 3 Health and Social Care, and Level 5 in Management and Leadership in 2019, but quickly had to adapt to new ways of learning when the COVID-19 pandemic struck in March 2020.

After starting college together, they soon moved to distance learning, with limited access to college or a tutor for the remainder of their qualification, but all managed to pass their qualifications with flying colours.

Stephanie Vaughan-Mason, wellbeing and training manager at Diverse Abilities, commented: “I am so proud of everyone who has completed their qualifications during such a difficult time. Not only have they had to adapt to new ways of learning, but they have done it whilst supporting the most

vulnerable people in the community during the pandemic.”

Diverse Abilities offers a range of training opportunities. All staff complete mandatory, paid-for introductory training to get them ready to fulfil their role in areas such as safeguarding, moving and assisting, and medication training.

Staff are also offered opportunities to enhance their career with further

qualifications and training throughout their time with the organisation.

Michelle Turner, supported living deputy manager, said: “It was fantastic to be able to complete my qualification, despite it not being quite how I imagined it. We all quickly adapted to learning from home”.

Chilli Before I moved in with Martin, he used to have a curry night on a Saturday, when he would order a takeaway, have a bottle of beer and watch a good film.

When I arrived, we turned Saturdays into a sort of ‘date night’, when we would put down our computers, have a nice meal and watch a film.

The trouble these days, is that there is so much choice!

We have the normal TV channels, Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime to name but a few. Martin usually starts looking for a film at about 5. He scrolls through all the channels, playing the previews and I have to make a decision quickly.

The trouble I have is that so many of the films seem the same, or they preview the funniest bits and then, when we watch it, the rest of it is boring.

We have similar tastes, in that I don’t really like girlie films or romcoms, I hate horror films and suspense films although Martin likes them.

When we first moved in together, I found out that he likes cartoons. (I was never allowed to watch them before.) We loved Ice Age and the Despicable Me series. The makers are so clever these days in that although they are for children, there are adult jokes in them as well.

Usually, we settle for a drama or crime thriller. We have our meal and then settle down with a glass of wine to watch the film. We have quite a large TV and we have lights round it so it looks like a cinema screen. The only thing is, no one sells popcorn or brings the ice creams around!

a trip to the cinema meant seeing two films with an interval and, oh, the double seats at the Tivoli, great for courting couples!!)

Ingredients: 1 tbsp Olive Oil 1 onion Chopped Clove of Garlic 1 red pepper chopped 400gm Beef Mince 400grm Tinned Tomatoes

In association with...

1 tsp chilli powder ½ tsp ground Cumin Seasoning 400grms Kidney Beans Method: Heat the Oil in a large saucepan Fry the garlic and onion gently Add the red pepper and stir for a couple of minutes Put in the mince and cook until the mince is light brown Add the tinned tomatoes, chilli powder and ground cumin and seasoning Bring to the boil on a low heat for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally Then put in the kidney beans and simmer for 20 mins If you are not eating straight away, then after cooking for 30 minutes, leave and then add the kidney beans 20 minutes before you serve.

You can serve with rice or pitta bread.

Make your way through the yard to visit the lovely church which, although privately owned nowadays, is open.

Back to the cart shed and, from there, walk east along the road crossing the River Tarrant.

There’s been so little rain recently that they might feel the need to change it’s name to ‘trickle’!

Continue to the bend where it then heads north east for nearly half a mile until, on your left, you come to the public footpath along the drive to Luton Farm, heading north-west.

Passing the farm buildings, you then

enter Luton Drove that heads due west in a straight line crossing quite a few contour lines. At the end of the Drove,

enter the next field and follow the path to the near corner of Race Down Plantation, which the path skirts.

Once past the woodland, you’ll see part of Blandford Camp behind high security fencing.

The path soon arrives at a junction where you turn left along a narrow way through woodland.

It’s worth pausing to peer back at the way you came as the views are wide and lovely.

Soon your path bends left and crosses Little Down, heading south east. You’ll pass a long barrow but it’s difficult to see through the hedge.

Then you come to the clubhouse of Ashley Wood Golf Club.

Join the road to its left and you’ll have an easy walk downhill over Rawston Down for a mile or so.

Eventually it curves round to the north east and in another half a mile you’ll be back at your car, having walked five miles.

We’re all entitled to feel proud

Recently, my colleague and I delivered our first ever online group coaching event. It had been weeks in the making.

During the session I experienced goose pimples for I was speaking passionately from my heart about what I believe in.

I have facilitated and delivered presentations in previous careers, and although interested in the subject, I was never moved to a point where I could feel the emotion in the back of my throat or know powerfully that what I was delivering was on point.

For me, the difference between delivering a message that you are passionate about is very different to delivering something that does not

make a fire burn in your belly. And I don’t think we can control that passion, it’s either there or it’s not.

For an audience, I believe they can see, hear and feel that passion.

We received lovely feedback.

People were inspired, happy, motivated, and one lady even said that we’d made her spine tingle. It’s fabulous knowing that you have resonated to the point where you have lifted someone’s mood or ignited a sparkle in someone’s soul.

The morning after, still high and pumped, I opted to express my pride on social media channels, all in a bid to help promote our small businesses.

However, after I posted, I began to fret.

What if people think I’m blowing my own trumpet?

What if people think I’m being big headed, banging on about how marvellous the session had been and how marvellous I am? Why do I even care what others think?

The trouble is, I do. I want to be loved and admired as much as anyone.

I want people to think kindly of me, be pleased for me, care about me. And if I don’t receive that then potentially, like many other people, I can be left feeling low or empty.

Grrrr... the evil joys of social media!

Rather than await affirmation and encouragement from others, I think it’s important that we are our own champion, believe and trust in ourselves, be pleased and

One of the things I’m asked most often is to help people with motivation.

They see me doing things so they assume I’m feeling motivated all or a lot of the time, but motivation is a feeling and it comes and goes for me as much as anyone else. Here’s the way I look at it: imagine motivation is a charismatic friend; they’re really good fun, they’re the life and soul of any party and you love hanging out with them.

They light up the room and make you feel great. The problem is, they’re quite flaky and unreliable and quite often they let you down.

They’re great for making plans and coming up with exciting ideas that you’ll look forward to, but then, at the last minute, they don’t show up.

Naturally you’re going to be left disappointed as you were

Find your support relying on them being there and for them to set the tone for you. Motivation is a great friend, but you cannot rely on them to be there all the time or to get things done. Instead, make consistency and habit your friends too.

Consistency and habit might not be as exciting or glamorous as motivation, but they’ll be there for you and they won’t let you down. You need them in your life too, they’ll help your confidence and be there quietly cheering you on and encouraging you long after motivation has left. They are the action that follows through. The reason you’re not making progress or not sticking to something isn’t because of lack of motivation, but because you’re expecting too much from motivation and you need a wider support team

that you can really rely on.

When we make changes in our lives to better our health and improve our fitness, we’d hope that those around us and those close to us, are supportive and encouraging.

Unfortunately that’s not always the case. What may happen is that your changes and positive progress may start to make others feel uncomfortable, undermine their sense of self or throw some light onto their inability to change and lack of focus and direction. It’s important to remember that it is about them and not you.

Sometimes we grow apart from people, or grow at different times, but that isn’t always a bad thing.

Try not to let others hold you back from making changes to improve yourself.

Helpful hints on hay fever

Q. I suffer from hay fever, but I love my garden and plants, how can I enjoy my garden without plants?

A. Hay fever is miserable, and can make what should be a lovely spring and summer an endurance test. But, whilst you cannot control what your neighbours grow, there are many options for plants that will not add to the hay fever burden in your garden.

There are some plants and trees which are absolute no-no’s. In fact many of our most common and stately trees are some of the worst offenders sadly.

Silver birch (Betula spp.), above, is

one of the worst offenders of all the plants and trees, yet is so common in gardens and street scenes, and Quercus (oak), Populus (poplar), and Acer pseudoplatinus (sycamore) are also bad for allergy sufferers.

In terms of plants, avoid sunflowers, chrysanthemums and dahlias among others. Plants that are least likely to affect you are those that are pollinated by insects, rather than wind, those that have a shorter flowering time, and those that have heavy, sticky pollen. Male plants are also a problem, since they are the pollen producers, not the females.

Some plant varieties are male or female only, whereas some plants have both male and female flowers on one plant.

An example of male and female plants is Ilex (holly) – it is the female varieties and cultivars which carry the berries, males will never bear berries but will produce pollen. A completely pollenfree tree is Acer ‘Autumn Glory’, and double hollyhocks have virtually no pollen either (in fact many double flowers are good for allergy-free gardening).

Follow these guidelines and it is perfectly possible to have a fabulous garden that is allergen friendly.

He’s hungry like ‘The Wolf’

I had heard that compost was sometimes termed, ‘black gold’.

At the time I thought this was overplaying it a bit, but now... maybe not!

It seems we are running out of chemical fertilisers and the scarcity is driving the price up which in turn puts up the price of food.

I take comfort from the fact that while this is true for large-scale intensive agriculture it need not be the case for portages, small holdings and allotments.

In every household we have the ingredients to create our own compost.

It’s a very satisfying pursuit, especially when you see the results!

If you are not used to it, maybe it seems a bit disgusting but it’s been used for centuries and certainly when Britain was ‘digging for victory’ and growing our own, we were making our own compost to grow our own crops.

The newspapers are full of scare reports about the shortage of potassium but, as the name hints, potassium can be obtained by just putting pot ash into the mix.

The first, from October 4 to 8, is Spike, by Have I Got News For You’s Ian Hislop and Nick Newman, a homage to Spike Milligan of Goon Show fame.

It’s the booming fifties, and Britain is in the clutches of Goon mania as men, women and children across the country scramble to get their ear to a wireless for another instalment of The Goon Show. While Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers

get down to the serious business of becoming overnight celebrities, fellow Goon and chief writer Spike finds himself pushing the boundaries of comedy, and

testing the patience of the BBC. Will Spike’s dogged obsession with finding the funny elevate The Goons to soaring new heights, or

will the whole thing come crashing down with the stroke of a potato peeler?

Peace, love and wellness = happy campers

by Lorraine Gibson Festivals have always had a bit of a wellness vibe going on, but often in the shape of a solitary yoga area in a far corner of the field.

Not any more. A Pandemic-driven increase in the focus on mental wellbeing and health issues has seen self-care take centre stage this summer and never more so than at local weekender, Camp Bestival.

Co-curators, Josie and Rob da Bank, pioneers of the wellbeing movement, have enouraged it at their festivals for years but this time, feelgood options are off the scale.

From ice baths, sleep therapies and breathwork, to meditation, moon healings and cleansing fire ceremonies, the family-friendly event at Lulworth will feature fields of calm and restoration for festival-goers to unwind between the music mayhem.

Rob da Bank, who told the New Stour & Avon that he sees the Dorset festival as his own family holiday, said: “Josie and I have always had a wellness space since we started Bestival in 2004 and loved being able to sit somewhere quiet and contemplate the world, have a treatment, or try something new - from knitting to chanting with strangers!

“This summer,” he added, “we feel even more blessed to be able to put on a festival with everything that’s happening in the world and for the first time are giving our wellness areas the theme - Freedom.”

Horticultural show is back after two years

Broadstone Horticultural Society members are looking forward to their Summer Show.

It takes place in the War Memorial Hall, Tudor Rd, Broadstone, on Saturday, August 13, from 1-4pm.

BSO’s show for residents

Residents from three Dorset care homes enjoyed their own intimate performance by musicians from Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO).

French horn and piano player Kevin Pritchard and violinist Jenni Curiel visited the Colten Care residents as part of the care group’s celebrations for World Music Day 2022.

The performance had been due to take place alongside a picnic at Poole Park.

But after rain was forecast, residents of Fernhill in Ferndown and Abbey View in Sherborne joined with residents at Colten’s newest home Bourne View, in Poole.

The musicians led the audience through a stunning one-hour set which included popular pieces by Schubert and Tchaikovsky, as well as hit songs from the 1960s and a medley of Cole Porter classics.

Kevin said: “We’ve played at many Colten Care homes and always receive a wonderful welcome.”

“Bourne View is an exceptionally beautiful home and performing a summer concert for so many residents together, on the picturesque roof garden level was perfect.”

Jenni agreed: “Everyone was swaying, tapping their toes or clapping.”

Save the date and paint the town

by Lorraine Gibson When Andrea Hook tells you she’s going to paint the town - she literally means it.

Last October, the award-winning Wimborne artist spotted a colourful pumpkin display in her local grocer’s shop and was so inspired that she decided to capture it.

The result - a small and beautifully-detailed nod to impressionism - was so well received that Andrea painted another shop, Winfred’s 1929, and then another and then some more.

“Originally my only intention was to paint the pumpkin scene for an autumnal post in social media,” she says.

“Then I painted Winifred’s as it stocks my work and the local response was so amazing, I kept going.”

The resulting miniature masterpieces have now been immortalised in a 2023 calendar called Painting The Town.

Naturally, and judging by the surge of positive comments on her Facebook posts, it is rapidly becoming the talk of the town - and beyond.

In a charming example of things going full circle, Andrea’s calendar is now stocked in two of the premises she painted - Gulliver’s Bookshop and Wimborne Model Town & Gardens - with others likely to follow suit.

Amazed, but thrilled by the success of what began as an artist’s passing whim, she says: “It’s a delight to see my paintings in print, after several months of painting just some of the wonderful, charming independent shops we have in Wimborne.

“I am extremely grateful for the support and encouragement I received from the local community and the shopkeepers when I started painting the series.

“I’ve met some really lovely people through this painting venture,” she adds, “I’m going to continue painting the town, there are so many characterful and inspiring buildings to capture. I’ll be painting for quite a while.”

Besides selling through local stockists Andrea will sell her calendars at local events, including the Wimborne Flower Festival at the Minster, from September 2 to 5, and Handmade Wimborne at the Allendale Centre, on October 16. Time to pop those dates in your soon-to-be-replaced calendar!

Giant buzz expected at music fest

by Lorraine Gibson Legendary punk band Buzzcocks could well start a commotion when they headline a music festival being held in the shadow of the Cerne Abbas Giant and his famous 36 feet-long appendage.

Barnstomper is back after a two year lay-off due to Covid and those who’ve fallen in love with it are already buzzing with anticipation.

The Dorset Downs will vibrate to the sounds of bands including Holy Moly And The Crackers, Guns Of Navarone, Imperial Leisure and other well-known acts.

Phil Hoyle, landlord of Ringwood’s London Tavern who is one of the festival organisers, said: “Securing these acts has been a real effort but it will be superb. “Holy Moly And The Crackers are a lively female-fronted folk-rock outfit from Newcastle and Imperial Leisure are a ska/rock band from London.

“We also have Black Water Country, a six-piece Dorset-based folk-punk band

and Warrington’s Roughneck Riot who are folky and punky.

“Music and beer go together perfectly and we have plenty of both.”

No doubt helped by the venue, the Cerne Abbas Brewery and a range of beers as eclectic as the music line-up.

Phil adds: “With the cost of living crisis we have kept the price as low as possible to encourage people to finish off the festival season with a bang.

Building a model weekend Building toys from the 1950s, including Lott’s Bricks, Bayko and Minibrix, will be making a hands-on appearance for one weekend only, at Wimborne Model Town on July 23 and 24, at the start of the charity attraction’s 70th anniversary summer holiday season. The construction model sets, popular before the appearance of Lego, will be available for visitors to try as part of a special Model Buildings Weekend.

Jack Gritton from Cobnut 3D will also be on hand to demonstrate and explain the process of model making with 3D printers.

Cobnut has been producing the miniature models for the Model of the Model Town, the developing 1/100th scale diorama which forms the 70th anniversary project now on view.

Booking is not required and there are no additional charges for the event.

Two days is £75 which includes camping.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming our regulars but also new festival-goers to what we believe will be the best Barnstomper yet.

“Hopefully we’ll have great weather, but never mind the rain, we’ve got Buzzcocks.”

Under-14s are champions of the UK After retaining the ENG Southern Conference title, Poole entered into the grand finals in good form.

The Dorset-based side would now meet the strongest teams in the country to determine who would be crowned National Champions.

In the opening game of the major event, Poole were slow to find their stride against an unknown Chester NC, but once the nerves were out the way Poole settled in and took control of the quarter-final fixture which resulted in a 43-20 win.

This set Poole up nicely for the semi-final, where they would meet Middlesborough based netball club Grangetown.

Grangetown presented Poole with a very tough challenge; early into the game the possession was fairly even, before they finally succumbed to the Dorset side just after half time. Poole were able to grind out a lead and then take it away. The game ended 34-19.

In the national final Poole NC faced a very established Kingsway Power from Manchester.

Poole got off to a dream start, the girls were firing across all areas of the court - playing with confidence and determination.

Kingsway Power struggled to break through the defensive pressure that a very relentless Poole applied throughout.

Poole found the breathing space early on to take control of the game and win 25-13, which made the girls the official Number One U14 team in the country.

Giving the shirt off his back for fundraiser A football coach is set to undertake a walking marathon from Portsmouth FC to Southampton FC at the end of September in support of Prostate Cancer UK. Chris Berry, coach for Ringwood Town U9 Titans signed up for the challenge but with an additional twist.

He said: “I hope to raise awareness by completing this challenge and raise funds for such as supportive charity.

“If the challenge to walk 26 miles from stadium to stadium was not enough, I plan to change into a different football shirt after

walking each mile.

“It would be great to have south coast teams

represented, Premier League to grassroots.’

Chris has had friends and

family donating or loaning shirts for this challenge, but he is still on the lookout for more.

A day at the farm with Tiffany Fleming

Tiffany Fleming is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown.

High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of wellbeing and self-worth that many have never experienced before’.

Browse Google for ‘bad-day sayings’ and it will serve you up a cornucopia of corny quotes suggesting we all need bad days, to help us truly appreciate the good ones.

“Be thankful for bad days and bad people. They teach you to appreciate the good days and the good people more”.

Tricky to adopt that as your philosophy, when you arrive at the farm to discover a break-in. Quite what our intruders hoped to find I’m not sure, but their clumsy efforts to open just about every door and every lock, left an unnecessary trail of destruction and much bad feeling amongst the cofarmers and staff.

Those that seek comfort in the farm environment found the unwelcome visit very unsettling indeed. Luckily, the exciting prospect of a quiz, a Farm Open Day, and a trip to Chessington, quickly

lifted their spirits. And, as if to demonstrate there is some truth in all those saccharine aphorisms on Google, plenty of good people did step up to the plate!

It is hard to stay unhappy for long at the farm, something visitors often experience and comment on. It is just the place to lift the spirits.

Take Ian for example, a High Mead co-farmer with a keen interest in farming, that began when he was very young. Stories of farm life back in the 1920s told to him by his Nan, sparked a love that will last a lifetime. Ian attended Beaucroft School from 1991, then learned business studies before working in retail. Through the years, Ian yearned for life on a farm. So, when his support worker found High Mead, Ian felt he’d found his second home.

Despite being excited about joining, Ian felt quite anxious when he first started, but

and worked in the farm shop - refreshing his former customer service skills - and rekindling lovely memories of his previous shop work.

You’d be barking to miss this dog fest!

Britain’s only surf contest for canines, the UK Dog Surfing Championships is set to ride the waves on to Branksome Dene Chine beach in Poole again this month.

The fourth annual Dog Masters Festival is now an all-day event that extends into the evening with a full programme of live music and sundown entertainment.

“It’s barking brilliant fun for all the family,” says event organiser Mark Reeves from Shaka Surf, a local surf and paddleboard school.

“We’re really excited because after three years undefeated reigning champions James Clarke and his beagle Bear have announced their retirement so we’ll have to crown a new top dog!”

Notable entrants include Jason the cockerpoo who learned to paddleboard to conquer his separation anxiety, Nixon the parson russell whose owner Mark Lewis is a famous fitness YouTuber, Scout the border collie who comes all the way from Ireland to take part, and

Harper the black lab whose owner Simon insists on wearing a Scooby-Doo outfit.

Meanwhile, last year’s runner up and firm fan favourite, Chuck Norris the parson russell has been in training... eating an egg a day!

As well as the main event with 30 canine competitors registered for a fast-paced doggy paddleboard race in the sea using Sandbanks

Style boards, the festival boasts a host of new features including a dog show with dog behaviourist Paws On Board, the Mutts Market, Shaka Surf Street Market, Shaka Street Food Fair and the Puppy Pad Kids Zone.

And the fun continues into the evening with the Sunset Sessions headlined by the Marley Experience, the world’s top Bob Marley tribute, and a strong support

bill featuring the emerging singer/songwriters Francis Lion, Poppy and Sam Lowen.

“Dog Masters is more bonkers than ever,” adds Mark. “We can promise dogs in Hawaiian shirts, kids on bungee swings, the best surf and pooch gear, beers and burgers on the beach. Lungworm (or Angiostrongylus Vasorum) is a parasite affecting dogs and foxes. It can cause significant disease and in some cases, be fatal.

It’s therefore important to be aware of lungworm and how you can help protect your pet from this parasite.

Dogs can be infected with lungworm larvae carried by slugs and snails (which act as intermediate hosts).

Unfortunately, slugs and snails can be inadvertently eaten in grass, soil or whilst playing with toys in the garden.

Lungworm larvae can even be found in the trail that snails leave behind in your garden.

The disease is commonest in young dogs that eat or play with slugs and snails and in dogs that eat or drink outside where slugs or snails may have been in their bowls.

Beware of lungworm

Lungworm are swallowed as tiny larvae, which migrate into the circulation and travel to the right side of the heart.

Here they develop into adult worms which can build up

in the heart; the adults then mate and produce eggs.

The eggs hatch into larvae and migrate into the lung tissue.

These larvae are coughed

up and are passed out into your dog’s faeces to re-infect snails and the like.

When in the body the larvae cause significant lung tissue damage, often causing a cough, breathing troubles and lethargy. This can result in bronchitis, heart failure and spontaneous bleeding.

Affected dogs often become weak and lethargic, go off their food, and may cough, vomit, or pass blood. The disease can be so severe as to be fatal but if diagnosed early, can be treated successfully.

The good news is that prevention is straightforward with spot-on or tablet medications, both of which are highly effective and available from your vet.

Ross providing the ring of confidence

It’s an extraordinary sight.

From the outside, Ross Phillips’ home in Colehill looks like any other detached house.

But on entering the back door you’re greeted by up to 14 people taking part in a boxing class or some other fitness training.

Ross, a former professional kickboxer, built the private gym attached to his home in 2006, originally for his own personal use.

It laid dormant after the 46-year-old father of three quit kickboxing.

But after people started asking for lessons, Ross began teaching, launching his business in 2009.

Today NRG Boxing and Fitness has upwards of 90 people a week through its doors, ranging in age from four to 62.

Apart from classes in boxing and kickboxing he also offers One 2 One fitness sessions and ladies fitness/strength/ toning and conditioning.

Twice a year Ross stages Fight Nights at The Hamworthy Club at Canford Magna.

Since the first one eight years ago, 17 have been held with each involving 40 fighters and attracting a 600-strong crowd.

Ross said: “Boxing is booming at the moment.

“I’m told there are about 26 boxing gyms in

“Boxing is amazing for fitness, and you can burn around 400 calories a session, but it’s also fun.

“There’s no getting hit in the boxing fitness classes and no pressure. It’s just for fun.

“When you’re having fun, and your body is literally working at the maximum, your brain is not thinking; ‘I don’t want to do any more exercise’.

“Instead, you’re concentrating on the boxing rather than thinking about how tired you are.

“We don’t aim for major weight loss in our gym, we aim for fitness.

“If you want to get fit, I can get you fit.

“If you want to lose weight and you go home and don’t change your diet I can’t get you to lose weight but you’ll still be fit.”

Ross, who is married to Carole, has now been joined by son Brandon, 16, and daughter Bekah, 18, in the business.

Securing possessions, securing data A storage business has renewed its partnership with a cyber security company because it believes it is just as important to keep clients’ data as safe as their possessions.

Store & Secure, which has three huge facilities in Bournemouth, Poole and Basingstoke, is working with C3IA Solutions.

The ‘security managed partnership’ means the cyber experts carry out vulnerability assessments on Store & Secure’s systems.

They have also guided the company through the Cyber Essentials certification and provide cyber security training and education.

“We have three sites and new clients arrive daily so there is a lot of data being processed.

“During the lockdowns more criminals went online to commit fraud so we always assume someone is trying to attack our systems.”

C3IA Solutions, which was one of the first companies to be certified by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), is headquartered in Poole and works across the public and private sectors.

Dave Owen from the company said: “We work with many firms who have an IT department or

outsourced IT companies and we come in to test for vulnerabilities.

“We’re not there to replace IT companies, but approach it from a cyber security point of view.

“As well as checking systems we guide clients through the Cyber Essentials certification, which also provides free cyber insurance.

“On top of that we train and educate staff to know what to look out for with regard to scams and how to recognise them.

“We always make the point to clients that they wouldn’t leave their business without locking the door – so why would they leave their systems open to attack?”

Solicitors coast in to fundraise £5,500 Tenacious solicitors from a Wimborne law firm hit the Jurassic Coast to raise £5,500 for former soldiers and their families.

The team from Ellis Jones Solicitors tackled the 100km Jurassic Coast Challenge in aid of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.

Now they have presented the proceeds from the gruelling trek, which covered the stretch of coast from Corfe Castle to Bridport.

Senior associate solicitor Will Dooley, who was joint team captain with solicitor Conor Maher, said: “Our thanks go to everyone who supported us in aid of such a worthy cause.

“Many former servicemen and their families have incredible mountains to climb so every penny counts for the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity so it can provide assistance when it is most needed.”

Conor said: “The trek was pretty gruelling at times with some challenging inclines but the amazing views more than made up for it.

“Well done to everyone who took part and raised such a tremendous amount.”

MSP expands its underwriting team Property finance specialist MSP Capital has expanded its underwriting team to champion its growth in the development and bridging loan market.

The south coast-based lender has made two strategic appointments to reflect its continued growth in the property industry, with £165million of funding released in 2022 so far.

Business development manager Mike Townsend is tasked with delivering new funding opportunities in Hampshire and West Sussex while credit analyst Jo Kelly will support the business with asset lending and financial analysis.

Both new recruits are experienced industry insiders. Their arrivals come as the property market continues to do well despite the wider economic context.

The latest ONS figures also show increasing demand for property with the average house price rising 1.1% in April and now standing at £286,079. That is more than ten per cent up on a year ago.
