he Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation underwrites the PBS award-winning series, “American Experience,” television’s longest-running, most watched history series. Now in its 25th season, American Experience’s 2013 fall season promises to be a riveting one with six new episodes. The season opener will be “War of the Worlds.” Seventy-five years ago, Orson Wells set off one of the biggest mass hysteria events in U.S. history with his dramatization of the H.G. Wells’ classic, “War of the Worlds.” As 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy, American Experience will air “JFK,” about John F. Kennedy’s presidency.

Other programs include, “The Amish: Shunned,” “The Poisoner’s Handbook,” about forensic science, “Freedom Summer” about the 1964 civil rights struggle in Mississippi, and “1964,” the year that ushered in the pivotal social changes of the 1960’s.

In addition, the Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation has long been a supporter of patriotic programming on MPTV, including The National Memorial Day Concert, A Capitol Fourth, and Liberty or Death.

F E AT U R E 60s GIRL GROOVES (MY MUSIC) − Host Mary Wilson of the Supremes Spotlights the Greatest Female Groups and Soloists of the Sixties –

F

or the first time ever, MY MUSIC spotlights the girl groups and solo singers from the early and mid-1960s in an all-archival celebration that features original performances. Curating worldwide video archives with rare footage from the vaults, 60s GIRL GROOVES (MY MUSIC) is part of special programming premiering on PBS stations beginning Monday September 9, at 9 p.m.

“This period in American pop music was very special,” says series creator TJ Lubinsky. “It was a time of innocence, angst, puppy love, heartbreak and, most of all, great memories of carefree youth — like the feeling of that one memorable summer we all had in our teens — wherever we were hearing these songs on the radio.”

It’s early rock and pop at its best on PBS, hosted by the always vivacious and “Supreme” Mary Wilson.

MPTV Honored by Wisconsin Broadcasters Association

T

his past June, MPTV was honored to accept the 1st Place, Wisconsin Broadcasters Association (WBA) Initiative - Year of the Veteran Award. MPTV was recognized for ongoing local program veteran segments, and the WWII veteran specials FIELD OF HONOR and RETURN TO PEARL produced in 2012. Awarded from entries submitted from all commercial and public stations in Wisconsin, this year-long program supported efforts of stations informing the public about veteran issues, events, profiles, and celebrating their service.

The award was presented by SGM Jim Venske, Recruiting and Retention Battalion, Wisconsin National Guard and received by Mr. Joe Bauer, manager administration and planning of MPTV. WBA award submissions are independently judged by outof-state sister broadcaster organizations.

MPTV Viewer Services Volunteers support the television station in a variety of ways. These activities include answering calls, messages and emails from our viewers, filing, simple projects related to our special events and more. We have space for up to 2 people per shift. Currently we have the following openings: Monday 8:30 – Noon * Wednesday Noon – 4:00 Fridays 8:30 – Noon

Tuesday 8:30 – Noon Wednesday 8:30 – Noon Thursday 8:30 – Noon * Thursday Noon 4:00 * * Indicates only one person needed

Training will be provided. Parking along with snacks and beverages is free for all volunteers.

These are great opportunities for college students looking for customer service experience and retirees.

OCTOBER

MPTV Antique Appraisal Fair: October 12 at the Auction Facility in Brookfield.

Volunteers are asked to assist by directing patrons to the waiting areas, and into the appropriate appraisal lines, work concessions and the outlet shop. There are two shifts: 9:15 a.m. – 2:00p.m. and 1:45p.m. – 6:00p.m. NOTE: These are new times for this event. Volunteers will receive a light lunch or snack along with two free verbal appraisals.

The Pabst Mansion and PRP Wine International continued their generosity and support of Milwaukee Public Television with this year’s Pabst Mansion Wine Tasting & Tour. The once again sold-out event was a success as everyone had a wonderful evening sampling wines and exploring the beautiful 19th century Pabst Mansion.

If you’ve watched any of MPTV’s local productions, such at AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN, TRACKS AHEAD, or THE MAKING OF MILWAUKEE, you’ve heard Gail’s work, but you probably haven’t noticed it. “The goal in my work is not to be noticed. If you notice my work, I probably did something wrong – it should be seamless.” said Gail.

Gail is MPTV’s audio engineer and her job is to put sound to what viewers see. She adds music and sound effects, and even records her own sound effects when she can’t find the right noise. Gail also “cleans up” the audio, so she takes out background noise like airplanes flying overhead so that viewers can better hear what is being said.

Gail has won numerous awards for her work in audio.

She has been nominated for an Emmy four times and won twice. She also won a Telly Award for her work on THE MAKING OF MILWAUKEE. Gail has been interested in sound since she was a little girl, when her father brought home a reel-to-reel tape recorder he purchased at a garage sale. Gail took night classes at local recording studios before programs in audio engineering were offered, and enrolled at MATC when it began an audio engineering program. As a student at MATC, Gail was a paid intern in MPTV’s Master Control, and joined MPTV as the full-time audio engineer in 1991.

Gail is also an accomplished musician and has been playing the keyboards with the band “First Born” since the 70’s. In fact, she and a bandmate co-wrote the theme song to TRACKS AHEAD. Gail said the reason she has spent most of her career at MPTV is because “I enjoy the variety of shows we produce and the leeway I’m given for my creativity. The MPTV producers trust that the engineers know what we’re doing and let us do it!”

Janet Mino races against the clock as graduation approaches for her severely autistic minority students. Once they graduate and leave the security of this nurturing place, their options for living independently will be few. or Arnel Pineda, the past five years have been the stuff of dreams. Neal Schon, guitarist for the iconic rock band Journey, saw a YouTube video of the aspiring Filipino singer and flew him to San Francisco to audition for the band. The rest is history.

But Pineda’s personal journey had just begun. He wasn’t prepared for the grueling physical and emotional strains that come with fronting a rock band on a whirlwind world tour. Can a man who has overcome many obstacles — orphaned at 12, living on the streets, no music training — deal with the demands of his newfound fame?
