A

utumn in southeastern Wisconsin is a beautiful time of year to enjoy the brilliant fall colors, visit a local farm to pick apples or a favorite pumpkin, or bring in the last of the garden’s tomatoes, zucchinis, and fall flowers. It’s a time to plan ahead for the winter – to bring in the bounty of the fall harvest.

This month we would like to recognize Edvest Wisconsin’s 529 College Savings Plan, one of the underwriters of children’s literacy programming seen Mondays through Fridays and on the weekends on MPTV. Edvest’s underwriting support helps make it possible for MPTV to continue to offer vital PBS children’s educational programming to young children and their families in the southeastern Wisconsin viewing area. Programs such as Martha Speaks, Super Why, Sid the Science Kid, Sesame Street, Wild Kratts, and others foster important early learning and literacy skills. Each has a particular emphasis, such as building critical literacy and language development concepts, introducing kids to math, science, and engineering concepts, or modeling positive social interactions with others.

The state of Wisconsin established the Edvest College Savings Plan in 1997 as Wisconsin’s direct-sold 529 Plan. As college costs rise and student debt grows, Edvest is designed to help families save and prepare for higher education expenses. An Edvest account can be opened for as little as $25 and earnings have the potential to grow tax free when used for qualified higher education expenses, including tuition, room and board, computers/tablets and related expenses such as internet access. Edvest also offers tax benefits to Wisconsin residents based on individual contributions regardless of whether the contributor is the account owner.

Funds can be used for colleges, universities, technical colleges, graduate schools and certificate programs nationwide and many schools overseas.

“We are proud to partner with an organization, like Milwaukee Public Television, with such similar values and goals to Edvest,” said James DiUlio, director of the Wisconsin 529 College Savings Program, “The educational programming provided by MPTV further supports and strengthens the role of education in a child’s life.”

PTV’s talented producers honor the longstanding tradition of shining a light on the issues that impact the communities we serve. The women and men on our staff produce a remarkable array of diverse programming from Outdoor Wisconsin to ¡Adelante! and Around the Corner with John McGivern to Black Nouveau. It’s an honor when Milwaukee Public Television is recognized for its achievements and recently Black Nouveau won two awards from the National Black Journalists Association. Black Nouveau received first place in the category of FeaturesLongform, for its episode titled “Trippin'”, which originally aired in August 2015. This special episode traveled the state and visited sites that were significant to the African American experience in Wisconsin.

Black Nouveau also won first place in the Specialty category for a segment that examined a new weapon in the fight against HIV -- Pre-exposure Prophylaxis.

Please join me in congratulating Joanne Williams, Liddie Collins-Siegrist and Everett Marshburn for the outstanding work.

Having landed in Milwaukee in late November 2016, I arrived just in time for the winter: “an unusually mild one” my MPTV staff told me. This year I’ve experienced great spring and summer seasons. And now I await the start of the changing of the colors of fall. With this new season upon us, Milwaukee Public Television is about to premiere several new television projects that truly merit your attention.

It’s welcome news to debut a new special from Milwaukee’s favorite historian John Gurda. Ten years after his iconic series The Making of Milwaukee was first broadcast in 2006, John takes a look at the changes that have happened in our city in the last decade. For me, the original series was the perfect introduction to the rich history of the city I now proudly call home. I learned about the people, the neighborhoods and the stories that make this city so unique. And now, the new special The Making of Milwaukee: The Next Chapter chronicles a decade of dramatic change.

Next month, we’ll be premiering MPTV’s news magazine series that promises to tell the stories of the communities we serve in the style that is uniquely ours.

Appropriately, we’re calling the new monthly series 10thirtysix - honoring the long tradition of Channels 10 and 36 as we look to the celebration of MPTV’s 60th anniversary in September, 2017. You’ll be hearing and reading more about the new program very soon.

istorian, writer, producer and host John Gurda and director, producer, editor Claudia Looze have teamed up again to bring viewers The Making of Milwaukee: The Next Chapter.

When The Making of Milwaukee premiered in October, 2006, it made local television history. Not only was it the most ambitious production Milwaukee Public Television had ever attempted, the series also made Channel 10 the most-watched public television station in America for four nights running. The program went on to win a Midwest Emmy© Award for best documentary.

This fall marks The Making of Milwaukee’s tenth anniversary, and MPTV is celebrating the occasion in style.

The series will be rebroadcast in its entirety and then capped with an all-new episode called “The Next Chapter”. This half-hour update will chronicle a decade of dramatic change as old struggles persist and a new Milwaukee rises.

Watch the entire series on Channel 10, October 2nd beginning at 2 p.m. The Making of Milwaukee: The Next Chapter airs at 7:00 p.m.

The Making of Milwaukee will also air on Channel 36 over three evenings, October 4th, 5th and 6th at 8 p.m. The Making of Milwaukee: The Next Chapter will air October 6th at 9:30 p.m.

MPTV Holds Storytelling 101 Free Activities for Children 2016 Fall Schedule

Storytelling 101 teaches children to identify story and illustration elements and is offered to children enrolled in kindergarten through third grade, accompanied by a parent or teacher. Each session is 45-60 minutes in length.

MLB Commissioner Emeritus busier than ever in helping preserve the pastime

’m sitting on a couch, across from a baseball icon, on the 14th floor of Milwaukee’s newest lakefront office tower.

He’s 82-years of age, but still very much a player. We’re surrounded by a tasteful gallery of photos, memorabilia, and other relics of his passion.

“You’re as busy as you ever were, sir.” “Busier,” is his response. “Some days I get tired by 5:30 or 6 o’clock. I’ve been busy all my life, so there’s no reason to change. I still enjoy it.”

Allan H. (Bud) Selig isn’t about to take a seat on the bench.

He’s too busy with lecturing about the game, advising his successor, and philanthropic outreach.

I’m back in Bud Selig’s world. His baseball world. In 1998 my MPTV colleagues and I produced the documentary, Bud Selig, Baseball Baron. It was the same year Mr. Selig was elected Commissioner of Major League Baseball. Since then a lot has changed. Those changes have inspired development of MPTV’s new presentation, Bud Selig, Commissioner Emeritus.

During his stewardship Selig revolutionized the game, from its economics to technology. But his love of the pastime is still very traditional. That’s obvious as he comments while walking us along his office gallery collection.

“There are many lessons that you can learn. There really are. Obligations, social responsibility. Jackie Robinson proved that. Learn how to handle disappointment. You learn how to handle success.”

As part of our updated production we also drop in during an afternoon class at Marquette Law School, where Bud Selig offers insights on the business side of the game, and the players who toiled on the field.

In addition, our epilogue features perspectives from numerous civic leaders and friends who’ve followed Selig’s career, his passion for life, and commitment to the community. Among those contributing; Rabbi Francis Barry Silberg, journalist Dave Begel, job creation and education consultant Gerard Randall, Milwaukee Brewers chief operating officer Rick Schlesinger, and Marquette University law Professor Matthew Mitten.

“So as you walk through the office there’s a lot of meaningful history here.”

“Do you feel at home,” I ask?”

“Oh, you bet I do, it’s been my life.”

My response is simple.

“I know.”

But, from the food they ate, to the clothes they wore and the new products that thrilled them, the Victorian's were surrounding themselves with killers. The domestic horrors of home life in the 19th century and the terrible consequences are laid bare, revealing how the Victorian ideal of 'safe as houses' was far from the reality.
