ctober is a time to enjoy Wisconsin’s fall foliage- taking a walk outdoors to enjoy the brilliant fall colors of oaks and maples, piling the kids in the car to a local farm for apples, or working in the garden to bring in the last of the season’s tomatoes, zucchinis, and fall flowers.

At MPTV, Outdoor Wisconsin, a show for both outdoor and armchair enthusiasts to appreciate Wisconsin’s natural resources; our lakes, streams, and woodlands, begins its twenty-sixth season. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 494 has been a long-time supporter of Outdoor Wisconsin. I.B.E.W. Local 494 is a Labor Union representing electrical workers in construction, manufacturing, maintenance, and telecommunications. They provide this service in Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties, as well as the Kettle Moraine counties of Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, Dodge, Manitowoc, and Calumet. I.B.E.W. Local 494 represents over 2,000 members and their families as well as over 1,000 retirees.

For over 100 years, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 494 has played an integral part our community. They have spent years training to make sure where you learn, work, play, and sleep is safe.

They are proud to have built our community, because it’s their community, too. Local 494 does this through providing family sustaining jobs. This allows their members the time to enhance their cities, towns and villages through charitable outreach and other volunteer opportunities in their respective communities.

o question, Milwaukee Public Television members enjoy the same programs as do other public TV viewers around the country – MASTERPIECE, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, THE PBS NEWSHOUR, NOVA, and many more.

But being “locally owned and operated,” MPTV has always had a commitment to coverage of the issues, people, and history of southeastern Wisconsin. Our October schedule provides some great examples: • THE OVERTURE CENTER FOR THE ARTS’ TOMMY AWARDS, October 21 at 9 pm on Channel 10, celebrates excellence in musical theater production among Wisconsin high school students. Schools featured in competition this year include Divine Savior Holy Angels in Milwaukee, the Kettle Moraine School for Arts and Performance, Oconomowoc, Shorewood, and Wauwatosa West. This special is part of our statewide Young Performers Initiative.

• Among the most famous and historic landmarks in the state is the Pfister Hotel, with roots dating to 1893. The new MPTV production INSIDE THE PFISTER, A MILWAUKEE HOTEL ICON, premiering October 31 at 7 pm on Channel 10, documents the grand hotel’s history and its operations today.

• And speaking of icons – how did William Harley and Arthur and Walter Davidson first get together to work on their motor-bicycle in a northside Milwaukee machine shop? The story behind the famous partnership is told in the MPTV documentary HARLEY AND DAVIDSON: THE FRIENDSHIP BEHIND THE MOTORCYCLE, October 12 at 8:30 pm on Channel 36.

• THE ARTS PAGE, Thursdays at 6:30 pm on Channel 10, includes segments this month about: Milwaukee fiber artist Timothy Westbrook, who creates sustainable, wearable art; and Oconomowoc author Paul Bialas, whose two recent photography books take readers inside the shuttered Pabst and Schlitz breweries in Milwaukee (his Schlitz – Brewing Art will be released this month).

• Milwaukee’s own Bruce Froemming reminisces about his career as the longest tenured umpire in the history of baseball (19712007) on I REMEMBER, October 7 at 6:30 pm on Channel 10; and WTMJ Chief Meteorologist John Malan joins host Jim Peck on the October 21 program.

• This month, INDEPENDENT LENS: THE GRADUATES details the unique challenges Latino students face to succeed in and graduate from high school in America. On its

October 29 edition, at 6:30 pm on Channel 10, MPTV’s ADELANTE! takes a close look at innovative efforts in the Racine Unified School District – starting at the kindergarten level – to close the graduation gap between minority and non-minority students.

• We’re also pleased to announce the return of 4th STREET FORUM to the MPTV lineup for a full season, Fridays at 9 pm on Channel 36 beginning October 11. Throughout the year, the series will focus on “Vital Signs,” an important benchmarking study commissioned by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation that looks at the vitality of the region that encompasses Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington, and Waukesha counties. Remember, you’re welcome to join the studio audience for the live tapings, Thursdays at 12 noon, at Turner Hall, 1034 N. 4th St., Milwaukee!

• Later in October, 4th STREET will offer a timely discussion on the how the Affordable Health Care Act’s exchanges are rolling out in Wisconsin. MPTV’s BLACK NOUVEAU will also be covering that subject with a practical guide to what residents need to know about the Act. Also on the docket for BLACK NOUVEAU are reports on human trafficking and Breast Cancer Awareness Month in southeastern Wisconsin.

FRONTLINE INVESTIGATES THE NFL’S CONCUSSION CRISIS FRONTLINE Presents League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis Tuesday, October 8, 2013, 8-10 P.M. on Channel 10

The National Football League, a multibillion-dollar

commercial juggernaut, presides over America’s indisputable national pastime. But the NFL is under assault as thousands of former players and a host of scientists claim the league has tried to cover up how football inflicted long-term brain injuries on many players.

What did the NFL know, and when did it know it? What’s the truth about the risks to players? What can be done?

In a special two-hour investigation, League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis, FRONTLINE and prize-winning journalists Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru reveal the hidden story of the NFL and brain injuries drawn from their forthcoming book, League of Denial: The NFL, Concussions and the Battle for Truth (Crown Archetype, October 2013).

Premiering Oct. 8 at 8 P.M. on FRONTLINE, League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis investigates how, for years, the league worked to refute scientific evidence that the violent collisions at the heart of the game are linked to an alarming incidence of early-onset dementia, catastrophic brain damage and other devastating consequences, even death.

The investigation draws on more than 200 interviews with scientists, doctors and former players, including some of the NFL’s all-time greats, as well as previously unpublished 4

medical records, NFL memorandums and e-mails.

“We all know football is violent and dangerous; that’s not a mystery,” says Steve Fainaru. “But if it’s shown, or if it’s suggested, that players can come away severely and prematurely brain-damaged as a result of their careers, that's going to change the way people look at football completely.”

“In every single play, particularly at the line of scrimmage, guys are running into each other head to head, and that’s just the nature of the sport,” says Mark Fainaru-Wada.

“And the science is emerging more and more that that’s the very nature of what this issue is about and why the players are going to develop this problem.”

In hour one of League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis, Fainaru and Fainaru-Wada chronicle the discovery of a devastating neurological disease in the brain of the Pittsburgh Steelers legend Mike Webster, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which was likely incurred during Webster’s 17-year NFL career.

As FRONTLINE reports, the response from the NFL to Webster’s diagnosis was swift. The league demanded a retraction of the scientific paper explaining the diagnosis, insisted there was no evidence linking football to chronic brain disease, and used its own heavily funded research arm to try to kill the findings and discredit the researchers behind them.

“For the most part, people didn’t want to believe it’s true,” a former team physician for the Steelers tells FRONTLINE. “They didn’t want to admit to themselves or anybody else that our beloved sport, probably our most popular sport, could end up with brain damage.”

The discovery of CTE in Mike Webster was only the beginning. In hour two, League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis investigates how the NFL responded to the growing body of scientific evidence that football was putting the brains of its players at risk.

But professional, adult athletes aren’t the only ones at risk.

As FRONTLINE reports, scientists are finding evidence of CTE in high school athletes, too.

“One of the biggest problems we had is that as long as the NFL dismissed this and said it’s not a big deal, … that meant parents were signing up their kids to go play football believing that there was no risk of problem,” one researcher tells FRONTLINE. “And you know that wasn’t fair to those kids or those parents, but especially those kids.”

Now the league faces another challenge: More than 4,200 former players have filed lawsuits claiming that their playing football led to brain damage. As League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis shows, it’s a confluence of events for the NFL that may threaten the future of the game.

n October 2012, superstorm Sandy cut a path of devastation across the Caribbean and the East Coast, killing hundreds and doing tens of billions of dollars in damage.

Now NOVA follows up on the 2012 film “Inside the Megastorm” with a fresh investigation of the critical questions raised by this historic storm: Are hurricanes increasing in intensity due to a changing climate? What can we do to prepare ourselves for the next Sandy, and what progress has been made toward making our urban infrastructure more resilient?

H

enry V has settled onto the throne and has the makings of a fine king. The French ambassador (Jérémie Covillault) brings a challenge from the French dauphin.

Inspired by his courtiers, Henry swears that he will, with all force, answer this challenge.

The Chorus (John Hurt) tells of England’s preparations for war, and Henry’s army sails for France. After Exeter’s diplomacy is rebuffed by the French king (Lambert Wilson), Henry lays a heavy siege and captures Harfleur.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES ON-GOING VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES The MPTV Viewer Service Volunteers support the television station in a variety of ways. These activities include answering calls and emails from our viewers, simple project related activities for special events and more. We have space for up to 2 people per shift.

MPTV, Antique Appraisal Fair Saturday, October 12, at the Auction Facility in Brookfield. Volunteers are asked to assist by directing patrons in the waiting areas, concessions, and the outlet shop. There are two shifts: 9:15 a.m. – 2:00 and 1:45 – 6:00. NOTE: these are new times for this event. Volunteers will receive snacks or a light lunch and two free verbal appraisals.

The MPTV Mail Crew welcomes volunteers multiple times a month. The mail crew assists with stuffing envelopes, etc. and meets at MPTV downtown. Parking is provided. Please come meet this energetic team. Students, retirees and seniors are all welcome to participate.

¡Adelante! Special T

his month, ¡Adelante! dedicates 2 segments focusing on the graduation rates of minorities locally. They examine the Racine Unified School District (RUSD) efforts to close the graduation gap existing between non-minorities and minority students, especially Latinos.

According to principals and administrators, if school districts want to serve minorities better, it is necessary to start with kindergarten and elementary level students. RUSD Bilingual Coordinator Dr. Jose Martinez explains how and why the district has used and changed several bilingual models. RUSD Superintendent Dr. Ann Laing talks on how illegal educational practices affect the learning process of Latino-Bilingual students including those who had special needs. She also talks about the challenges of serving Latino students in the future including non availability of bilingual teachers due to the small bilingual student graduation rate.

Start learning about these issues with Independent Lens’ “The Graduates” on October 28 at 9p.m. on Channel 10, and then see the ¡Adelante! Special, October 29th at 6:30 p.m. on Channel 10.

MPTV IS UPDATING PBS KIDS PROGRAM LINE-UP TO MAKE ROOM FOR A BRAND NEW SHOW! Beginning October 7, MPTV’s PBS Kids programs will be making room for a new animated preschool series, PEG + CAT! It follows the adorable, spirited Peg and her sidekick Cat as they embark on adventures, solve problems and learn foundational math concepts and skills. While teaching specific math lessons, the series displays the value of resilience and perseverance in problem-solving. Children can find games and other resources online at pbskids.org/peg.

THOMAS & FRIENDS will also join the daytime schedule. On October 13, MPTV’s Sunday line-up will change to make room for programs displaced by the weekday offerings. These schedules will air on MPTV 10.1 HD and 36.2.

Relive the thrill of Orson Welles’ infamous radio dramatization of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, 75 years after it set off one of the biggest mass hysteria events in U.S. history. The film examines the elements that made America ripe for the hoax: and Welles himself, the 23-year-old wunderkind director of the drama and mischief-maker supreme.
