Bohdan Zachary As we continue celebrating National Hispanic

Heritage Month, Milwaukee PBS is honored to broadcast the premiere of LATINO WISCONSIN. Produced by the husband and wife team of Georgia and Ralph Pabst, the hour-long documentary delves into one of the fastest growing populations in Wisconsin. The film is wellreported and beautifully realized and I invite you to experience this story on October 8 at 7 p.m.

One of Milwaukee PBS’s outstanding local storytellers is Everett Marshburn, the senior producer of BLACK NOUVEAU. Milwaukee PBS has been producing this critically acclaimed, long-running series for 28 years. Throughout its history, BLACK NOUVEAU has been a welcome and trusted chronicler of stories of Milwaukee’s African American community. The series has introduced viewers to leaders, community ac-

tivists and issues that deserve recognition. The new season kicks off on October 1 and in this issue, Everett shares his vision for the coming year.

A new, hour-long documentary, LATINO WISCONSIN, vividly illustrates the impact, influence and importance of the state’s fastest growing population. It premiers on Milwaukee PBS October 8 at 7 p.m.

In five chapters, the documentary shows how the booming Latino population is reviving dying, rural communities and aging urban centers. Latinos are creating businesses and breathing new life into empty store fronts, filling empty classrooms, and developing community, cultural and educational programs that benefit entire communities. There’s also a new generation of leaders and professionals who are bringing new life, energy and diversity into the Badger State.

The film was produced, written and directed by journalist Georgia Pabst, and veteran video producer Ralph Pabst. A fourth generation Mexican-American, Georgia was a reporter for the Milwaukee Journal and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. For more than 30 years she covered the Latino community and chronicled its growth in Milwaukee and throughout the state.

The documentary examines the long history of Latinos in Milwaukee and Wisconsin, and the fights for civil rights, education and opportunities. Today there are challenges, like jobs, poverty, education and political power.

Still, many Latinos are forging new paths politically, educationally and socially and working to build a future for themselves, their communities and the Dairy State because Latinos are key to the state’s future.

BLACK NOUVEAU HAS A NEW HOST

In October, “Black Nouveau” begins its 29th season on Milwaukee PBS. A program by, for, and about the African-American experience in Milwaukee, and elsewhere, It celebrates our history, culture, and achievements; while also illuminating the challenges facing many African-Americans. It is one of a few survivors from Public Television’s attempt to serve and give voice to diverse communities.

My involvement with the program officially began with Season 15 in 2006; but I knew about the series at least a decade before then. I was a Public Affairs producer at Maryland Public Television, and I met one of the producers, Joseph Savage, at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Los Angeles in 1990.

Twelve years later, when NABJ held its annual convention in Milwaukee, I got to meet other members of the production team (Liddie Collins and Sharon Patterson) who were covering the Convention.

When Sharon left the staff in 2006, I jumped at the opportunity to work on the show. The program has been hosted by a number of journalists and community activists including Rod Walker, Sonya Masingale, Dr. Richard Lewis, Joseph Savage, Sharon Patterson, Rev. Walter Harvey, Eugene Kane, Eric Von, Faithe Colas, Keith Murphy, Milton Dockery, and Joanne Williams.

This month we’re adding a new name to that list, Earl Arms.

Many of you may remember Earl from his days as Sports Anchor/Reporter at WDJT TV Channel 58, from 2013 to 2017.

He left there to become Anchor/Reporter for WAPT in Jackson, Miss. He returned home in 2019 to become Communications Director for Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes.

Earlier this year he became the Media Relations Manager for Milwaukee Public Schools.

He will host the October 1st broadcast.

“My interest in Black Nouveau comes from my time in front of the television as a kid until now. It has been instrumental in amplifying the stories and issues affecting Milwaukee’s Black community. This is a monumental time in Black history, so to be a part of this award-winning show is both an honor and a blessing.
