O

ctober is a time to enjoy Wisconsin’s beautiful fall foliage, piling the kids in the car to a local farm for apples or pumpkins, or working in the garden to bring in the last of the season’s tomatoes, zucchinis, and fall flowers.

This month we would like to recognize Hydrite Chemical Co. for its underwriting support of numerous programs on MPTV. Hydrite Chemical Co. is a long-standing underwriter of Nature. After more than 32 seasons, Nature, the recipient of more than 600 honors in television, continues to “wow” audiences with its features on wildlife and the natural environment. Earlier this year, Hydrite Chemical Co. was one of the underwriters of the documentary presented by Ken Burns, Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies, chronicling the struggle to fight this most dreaded of diseases.

Hydrite Chemical Co. has been a supporter of numerous patriotic programs for several years on MPTV, including this summer’s A Capitol Fourth, America’s annual Independence Day Concert celebration extravaganza, and the National Memorial Day Concert. Other patriotic programs the Hydrite Chemical Co. sponsored this summer on MPTV included programming on Pearl Harbor, D-Day, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the experiences of African-Americans before and after the Civil War, and a concert for veterans and members of their families.

Most recently, the Hydrite Chemical Co. was the local underwriter of two science programs, The Mystery of Matter: Search for the Elements and Uranium. The Mystery of Matter: Search for the Elements is on the nature of matter and the periodic table, while Uranium features the element uranium, and how its discovery changed science, medicine, and the nature of war.

e were reviewing the upcoming calendar of MPTV events at a recent meeting and it was astonishing to see just where the station will be visiting in the next few months! Outreach activities are planned all over our viewing area and we hope to see you at some.

This month, MPTV will hold its annual Appraisal Fair at the Auction Studios in Brookfield, then will be in downtown Milwaukee for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Wine and Dine Event and the Milwaukee Admirals season opener. Closing out October, join us for afternoon tea at the Elm Grove Woman’s Club.

November is an exciting month as well. Fall/Winter Farmer’s Markets resume at the Auction Studio in Brookfield on November 14th and the MPTV Holiday Art and Gift Fair will be held November 21st-22nd to help get you started on holiday shopping. November 15th is an exciting day when we welcome Alastair Bruce, historical advisor to Masterpiece’s “Downton Abbey” to Milwaukee. Mr. Bruce will provide firsthand accounts of recreating Edwardian England for PBS most successful program ever. See page 8 for more information.

Home Fires

Starring Samantha Bond and Francesca Annis In a World War II–era drama

Sundays, October 4th – November 8th, 7p.m. on Channel 10.

S

amantha Bond (Downton Abbey) and Francesca Annis (Reckless) head an extraordinary cast in a moving drama about women in an English village facing the onset of World War II. Calm, fortitude, and creativity are the watchwords on Home Fires, airing in six inspiring episodes on MASTERPIECE, Sundays, October 4th – November 8th.

Bond plays forward-thinking Frances Barden, a born leader with a stubborn streak, while Annis is her antagonist, Joyce Cameron, obsessed with class and tradition. The two are bitter rivals for control of the local Women’s Institute, a nationwide service organization. With war looming, their chapter faces its moment of truth. Will the largely social group shut up shop for the duration, or will it reinvent itself to help the nation in its hour of need?

Audiences and critics fell in love with Home Fires during its recent UK broadcast, which enticed over six million viewers each week. The Daily Mirror (London) applauded the series as “an astonishing story about women as war breaks out.” “There are few better dramas on television,” echoed the Sunday Express (London). And The Guardian (London) promised, “You can't go wrong with a face-off between Samantha Bond and Francesca Annis!”

Co-starring with Bond and Annis are a multitude of gifted British actresses playing the spectrum of women in the village, from maids to shopkeepers to gentry, including Ruth Gemmell (Fever Pitch), Claire Rushbrook (Great Expectations), Frances Grey (Case Histories), Clare Calbraith (Downton Abbey), Rachel Hurd-Wood (Peter Pan), Leila Mimmack (Inspector Lewis), Claire Price (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel),

Fenella Woolgar (Case Histories), Leanne Best (Worricker: Salting the Battlefield), and Daisy Badger (Shelter).

Appearing as the principal local men are Ed Stoppard (Upstairs Downstairs), Mark Bazeley (Endeavour), Mark Bonnar (The Paradise), Mike Noble (Mr. Selfridge), Daniel Ryan (Worricker: Salting the Battlefield), and Chris Coghill (Nowhere Boy).

Home Fires opens in August 1939. War with Germany is all but certain, and the citizens of the isolated village of Great Paxford are each facing it in their own way. Men of fighting age are mostly enlisting or waiting to be called. Some of the women are joining the female military services; others already have essential jobs, such as farming; and still others are planning to “dig for victory,” planting gardens to reduce the need for food imports.

Since German submarines will be attacking merchant ships, any task that adds to the nation’s self-sufficiency is vital.

Frances (Bond), whose husband owns a local factory, believes that the Women’s Institute has an important role to play. Joyce (Annis), the longtime president of the institute, vehemently disagrees and proposes suspending activities until the war is over.

So begins a quarrel that mirrors the fragmentation rending the wider world. In Great Paxford, this crisis ends up cementing the friendships of a group of women who have their own personal troubles, but who now have a shared mission that will lead them to their finest hour.

Home Fires is based on Jambusters, Julie Summers’ enthralling history of the Women’s Institute in World War II. Watch for Summers in a cameo role: she’s “Mrs. Summers” in the brown hat, presiding over the suspenseful election for president in episode two.

Local Scene Falling leaves, pumpkins, tricks and treats remind us October is here. This month new seasons begin for I Remember and InterChange. Tune in to see what’s happening in and around Milwaukee on our intriguing local programs.

I Remember begins its new season with an interview with Rosemary Steinfest, former Vice President and General Manager of the Pfister Hotel. She played an important role at the Pfister Hotel, from its 1960s renovation, to the ‘90s, when Milwaukee celebrated the centennial of this 19th century treasure.

InterChange starts a new season discussing our communities’ relevant issues. Keepup on what people are talking about in Milwaukee, the surrounding area, and Wisconsin with a little help from InterChange.

The Arts Page revisits the 2014 MPTV Appraisal Fair, explores how SHARP Literacy partnered with the Neighborhood House of Milwaukee to create the first outdoor mural in this community murals’ series, and features abstract artist Jason Rohlf who was born and raised in Milwaukee.

Around the Corner with John McGivern features how people live, work, and play in Wisconsin’s communities. In September John and the crew visit Geneva Lake, Sheboygan Falls and Kohler, Prairie du Chien, and Milwaukee’s Mitchell Street neighborhood.

Black Nouveaucelebrates the 10th Anniversary of the Milwaukee Fatherhood Summit and looks at the second Million Man March. ¡Adelante! features Danceworks’ Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap, an innovative educational dance program, providing arts and physical education programming to under-served, urban youth in low-income central city schools.

Outdoor Wisconsin meets a couple of cranes on the shores of Pewaukee Lake in Waukesha, goes Musky Fly Fishing in Hayward, and heads to Sheboygan for trout and salmon fishing.

Tracks Ahead visits Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry and gives us an update on the Great Train Story exhibit and features an unusual steam-powered attraction at the Omaha Zoo. Healthful Indian Flavors with Alamelu demonstrates how to prepare a delicious Black Pepper and Cumin Rice with Cashews dish and an easy-to-prepare Shrimp Masala.
