s Thanksgiving approaches, it’s normal to take a moment to reflect on the people and things in our lives that enrich and sustain us. Especially over the past couple of years, when so many of us have been separated from family and friends, these moments of gratitude have been especially important. I want to take a moment right now to thank you for your generous investment in Milwaukee PBS. Your support of public television in our community is incredibly important and deeply appreciated. This month, your support is allowing local storytelling to shine with a look at Wisconsin’s dairy industry. Hardworking families across the state have made Wisconsin “America’s Dairyland” for generations. But over the last 20 years, things have changed and this industry is in crisis. You won’t want to miss AMERICA’S DAIRYLAND: AT THE CROSSROADS, a documentary examining the hardships currently facing Wisconsin’s dairy farmers. This special presentation grew out of a 2019 national collaboration with FRONTLINE, when we discovered several additional compelling local stories to share with you.

MASTERPIECE: ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL James Herriot’s adventures as a veterinarian in 1930’s Yorkshire get a glorious new adaptation in a sevenpart series based on his beloved stories. Exciting newcomer Nicholas Ralph will make his television debut as the iconic vet who became renowned for his inspiring humor, compassion and love of life. The 1970s adaptation, which aired on public broadcasting, was a favorite of millions of viewers. Season 1 Marathon 11/25 beginning at 1 PM 10.1 Courtesy of PBS

November is also National Native American Heritage Month and to help celebrate, your children and grandchildren can see all-new episodes of the award-winning PBS KIDS series MOLLY OF DENALI this month. And in keeping with entertainment that can be enjoyed by the whole family, I invite you to spend part of your Thanksgiving Day enjoying a special marathon of the beloved new adaptation of ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL—the perfect way to unwind after a gathering of friends and family. From everyone at Milwaukee PBS, thanks again for keeping our community strong by supporting programs designed to enlighten, entertain and inspire viewers of all ages. Sincerely, Vice President & General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

America’s Dairyland: At the Crossroads

T

here is no more quintessential image of Wisconsin than a red barn with a herd of cows grazing in a green field against a blue sky. The state’s dairy history is an essential part of the state’s culture and economy. All of it is at risk. A confluence of factors is causing many small, family-owned dairy farms to quit, including low milk prices, changing consumer tastes, labor issues and now a pandemic. Wisconsin has lost 68% of its dairy farms since 2000, while gaining large, corporate farms. The industry has been the state’s economic engine, generating more than $45 billion a year. But many farmers are at a crossroads of either making big changes or calling it quits. Milwaukee PBS has partnered with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to produce this documentary, an hour-long look at the continuing crisis and the future for farmers, businesses and communities who rely on the dairy industry to survive. Thursday, November 18 at 7 PM, 10.1

On the LOCAL SCENE 10THIRTYSIX™, ADELANTE AND BLACK NOUVEAU – Milwaukee PBS’s public affairs programs continue to provide in-depth looks at what’s happening in our community. Segments include information about issues impacting Milwaukee and the surrounding area. And watch for the new “AMERICAN DREAMS” segments featured in all three shows. Follow these stories on the Milwaukee PBS website, social media and on-air. Check milwaukeepbs.org/schedule for details. AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN™ – Take a trip to Monroe and learn why in Green County they say, "Cheese is life!" There’s a lot of Swiss (cheese, people and cows!), but for you shoppers, there's more for sale than just cheese. Monroe is a town that can stimulate all the senses! Then visit the village of Menomonee Falls. Sounds small, right? Wrong! This village is giant and is home to some really big things. Kohls is a big employer, the Menomonee Falls Little League is the biggest in the state and the garden scale train set at Shady Lane is the biggest in the Midwest. OUTDOOR WISCONSIN – This month enjoy fishing, hunting and other adventures. Dan Small fishes for walleyes near Lake Pepin with guide Denver McKinnon, and Meredith Evans and he goes on a pheasant hunt in Green Lake County with Nathan Nickel and Jeff, Jesse and Jaelee Schwartz of Rock River Kennels. Then Deb Wolniak spends time at Sturgeonfest, learning about community involvement in the raising and release of sturgeon.
