Poldark and The Durrells in Corfu have filled our Sunday nights with just the right amount of drama each week. Current events are covered in detail on Frontline and the PBS Newshour. And, The Vietnam War from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick brought so many memories and experiences of local Vietnam veterans we captured on film to share with the community. This month’s schedule continues to be as compelling. Be inspired by Beyond a Year in Space which tracks astronaut Scott Kelly’s homecoming after a historic year in space – the longest space mission in American history. Laugh a little as David Letterman receives The Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. And, be a part of “Beatlemania” all over again with the broadcast premiere of The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years. Director Ron Howard chronicles the early years of The Beatles early career through never before seen archival footage, accounts from those who were there and explores what went on behind the scenes from creating the music to the personalities that made them so unique. In advance of the film, Milwaukee PBS presents an encore of The Beatles Invade Milwaukee, our look back at the September 4, 1964 concert at the Arena with those who went, historians and musicologists and former WOKY DJ Bob Barry--the 5th Beatle.

More new programs are coming to Milwaukee PBS, including local stories of the people around us each Thursday night at 9:00 p.m., and the last weekend in November kicks off our winter on-air fundraising campaign with a suite of programs made possible through viewer contributions.

his month we would like to recognize the War Memorial Center, Wisconsin’s memorial to the men and women who have served in our nation’s armed forces during war or peace time.

Recognized as a Milwaukee landmark in 1974, the War Memorial Center serves as a cultural center of patriotism with its mission to “Honor the Dead, Serve the Living.” The War Memorial Center is one of the local underwriters of The Vietnam War. The 10-part series is currently being re-aired in November on Milwaukee PBS Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. on Channel 10.

After World War II, the idea of a community memorial to those who had lost their lives in service to their country was born from the collective vision of the Zonta, Altrusa, Business, Professional Women’s Clubs and the Milwaukee Civic Alliance. The War Memorial Center was envisioned as an arts complex on the Lake Michigan shore, with a museum, performing arts center, and veterans’ memorial. Designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, the building was dedicated on Veterans Day, 1957. Sixty years after its original dedication, the War Memorial Center serves as a vital patriotic cultural center with its restored sacred Veterans Courtyard, the new Eternal Flame, Ring of Honor, and a Mobile Tour that tells the stories behind the memorials. The War Memorial Center continually seeks to provide students and the general public opportunities to learn about the accomplishments and sacrifices of Wisconsin veterans through school tours and educational lectures. As part of its mission the War Memorial Center also houses The Veterans Story Project, a repository of recorded interviews with Wisconsin veterans available on site and online.

Milwaukee PBS is thankful for its collaboration with the War Memorial Center. Their vision and commitment makes it possible for Milwaukee PBS to offer The Vietnam War to our southeastern Wisconsin viewers.

on Howard’s authorized and highly acclaimed Emmy® Award and GRAMMY Award®-winning documentary film about The Beatles’ phenomenal early career, THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK – THE TOURING YEARS premieres Saturday, November 25th 7p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10. The film will be followed by an encore broadcast of SGT. PEPPER’S MUSICAL REVOLUTION, at 9:30p.m., which continues the story beyond The Beatles’ touring years, during the months the band spent creating Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, a groundbreaking masterwork that became popular music’s most universally acclaimed album.

THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK – THE TOURING YEARS is based on the first part of The Beatles’ career (1962-1966) – the period in which they toured and captured the world’s acclaim. The film explores how John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr came together to become this extraordinary phenomenon, “The Beatles.” It reveals their inner workings – how they made decisions, created their music and built their collective career together – all the while, exploring The Beatles’ extraordinary and unique musical gifts and their remarkable, complementary personalities. The film focuses on the time period from the early Beatles’ journey in the days of The Cavern Club in Liverpool to their last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco in 1966.

The Beatles began touring Europe in late 1963, after an extraordinary arrival on the British scene in 1961 and ‘62. However, it was their much-heralded “Ed Sullivan Show” appearance on February 9, 1964, that caused The Beatles’ popularity to explode. By June, the band had commenced their first world tour, and continued on a relentless schedule for two subsequent years. By the time the band stopped touring in August of 1966, they had performed 166 concerts in 15 countries and 90 cities around the world. The cultural phenomenon their touring helped create, known as “Beatlemania,” was something the world had never seen before and laid the foundation for the globalization of culture.

THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK – THE TOURING YEARS features rare and never-before-seen archival footage of shows and interviews, plus new interviews with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and numerous prominent observers. The film captures the exhilaration of The Beatles’ phenomenal rise to fame as well as the toll it eventually took on the band’s members, prompting them to stop touring and devote their prodigious musical talents to their groundbreaking studio recordings.

Tune in each Thursday at 9p.m. for the latest in community issues, the arts, and happenings in southeast Wisconsin.

There is an exception that you’ll experience this month. In a month with 5 Thursdays there will be one Thursday with alternate programming. On Thanksgiving Thursday, we will have special programming in the Milwaukee PBS Presents time slot.

on the local scene 10thirtysix™ profiles Ann Fritsch, a ninety year old veteran who served two tours of duty in Vietnam. We join the retired Army Colonel and physical therapist as she takes the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight to Washington DC (Sept. 16, 2017) to visit the National Vietnam Memorial. ¡Adelante! features a look at the Vietnam War from Wisconsin Latino Veterans’ perspective. They explain that they faced rejection during the war and therefore kept their experiences private.

Around The Corner with John McGivern™ explores some interesting places that are not community specific in an episode called Around the Map. John and the crew also visits Delevan, Grafton, Beloit and Milwaukee’s Garden District.

Black Nouveau celebrates Veterans Day with a salute to some local Vietnam Veterans and we talk with Human Rights educator Jane Elliott, creator of the “Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes,” experiment. We also discuss this year’s Affordable Care Act Enrollment period which runs from November 1st December with Bevan Baker, Commissioner of Health for the City of Milwaukee.

Outdoor Wisconsin talks to UW-Extension natural resources educator, John Haack about lakeshore habitat restoration.

Deb Wolniak looks at accessible fishing piers on Lake Winnebago. Emmy Fink takes viewers behind the scenes at Rutabaga’s Canoecopia event in Madison.

The Arts Page showcases how Milwaukee metal sculptor Jesse Meyer creates his “Garden Fish”. Machine de Cirque entertains with amazing acrobatics and humor. Illustrator John Martel’s detailed drawings can be seen in Hollywood films. The FRESH A.I.R. Gallery features the work of artists in recovery. Larry Moss and Kelly Cheatle create large-scale balloon installations called “airigami”.

Mittens and More Is Currently Seeking Donations to Help Keep Hands Warm This Winter!

The Mittens and More collection drive is in full swing, and we need your help! The weather is getting colder, and Milwaukee PBS asks viewers to help keep hands, heads and hearts warm.

We are currently collecting *new* mittens, gloves, hats and scarves. There are over 20 collection sites throughout our viewing area, and they will be accepting donations until November 5. For the location nearest you, please visit MilwaukeePBS.org or call us at (414) 297-7514.

Volunteers are also needed to help sort, box and distribute items beginning the week of November 6.
