On November 18th, Milwaukee PBS premiered 10thirtysix, hosted by Portia Young, a program focused on the stories that impact southeastern Wisconsin.

An underwriting sponsor will often choose their favorite program to support, such as Nature, Nova, American Experience, or one of Milwaukee PBS’s local Emmy-award-winning shows. Perhaps their focus is on current events, news, or stories on southeastern Wisconsin, so they choose to underwrite Milwaukee PBS’s 10thirtysix, or the PBS Newshour, or FRONTLINE. Some underwriting sponsors choose perennial PBS favorites such as Masterpiece, Antiques Roadshow, or This Old House Hour.

O

ne of the most endearing aspects of living in Milwaukee is the warmth and generosity of the people I work with and the residents I’ve met over the last year.

After living 30 years in California, I’d forgotten how genuine Midwesterners are. Though I was born in Detroit, I spent most of my adult life in New York City and Los Angeles, where a lack of civility and engagement in others seemed the norm. (That’s certainly not to infer that everyone in NYC and LA is that way).

Almost everywhere I’ve gone in southeastern Wisconsin, strangers have stopped me and shared their passion for Channels 10 and 36. Even yesterday I heard my name shouted while walking down the street near the Milwaukee Area Technical College campus.

“You’re the PBS guy!” the woman shouted. Many of you who I’ve met are long-time supporters and others newer members who find our mission and programming decidedly different from that of commercial television stations. To many, Channels 10 and 36 are the only stations they tune to. Others I’ve spoken to appreciate that our channels are free to everyone - and can be enjoyed by using only a digital antenna. Those viewers also include college students and seniors who have no interest in costly cable subscriptions. The passion you hold for our channels is undeniable.

The nearly-daily encounters in supermarkets, the airport, Summerfest and museums has been, as you can imagine, gratifying and heart-warming. Yet one thing emerged from the countless conversations. People spoke about Channels 10 and 36 yet rarely mentioned our overarching brand name of many years, MPTV.

An idea arose and the name we have introduced heralds the next chapter in this station’s long and storied history: We are now Milwaukee PBS. Our commitment to local and national programming remains unchanged. Telling the stories of our communities in southeastern Wisconsin continues to be a priority. In coming months we will also start showcasing the talents and stories of Milwaukee Area Technical College students and graduates, many of whom got their professional starts in the television industry working on Milwaukee PBS programs alongside our seasoned producers and engineers. And thanks to your ongoing financial support we have an amazing year of PBS programming ahead of us, including the January 16, 2017 launch of the Milwaukee PBS Kids Channel. I’ll write more on that in the next issue of Fine Tuning.

Lastly, as we head into the end of 2016, I’d like to wish all of you Happy, Healthy and Safe Holidays.

New Moniker For Milwaukee Public Television

our favorites - whether it’s Masterpiece; Frontline; Nova; PBS NewsHour; Sesame Street; Around the Corner with John McGivern will always continue to be seen on Channels 10 and 36. But now - with input from our loyal viewers and members - we’ve adopted a new name…..Milwaukee PBS. “We wanted a name that reflects where we are and what sets us apart from commercial broadcasters,” said General Manager Bohdan Zachary. “We want people to know we are recommitting our mission to tell local stories.

That’s the ‘Milwaukee’ reference. At the same time we are dedicated to trusted PBS content that we offer on our television channels as well as our website.”

“The new name for our stations represents our renewed commitment to strengthening the region through the college's many services, including Milwaukee PBS,” said MATC President Dr. Vicki J. Martin. “Aligning the stations with the recognized and respected PBS brand demonstrates the highquality local programming and services that help improve the quality of life in southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.”

Nothing has changed but the name.

Milwaukee PBS still has the same entertaining, inspiring, and informative local programming focusing on southeastern Wisconsin. Viewers can still watch their favorite national dramas, documentaries, science shows and public affairs programs from PBS. PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger had this to say, “The name and logo treatment clearly communicates that Milwaukee comes first – and invokes the strong connections that WMVS and WMVT have cultivated as a responsive, locally governed community resource that tailors its services to serve the needs of viewers in the area. At the same time, it aligns directly with PBS, which has been called the most trusted national institution in national polls for 13 consecutive years.”

Over the next several months Milwaukee PBS will transition all aspects of the station to who we are today….Milwaukee PBS.

Anyone who saw the BoDeans play live anywhere will remember their unforgettable harmonies and their everyman lyrics.

30 Years of Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams Premieres December 1st at 9 p.m. on Milwaukee PBS CH 10.

Milwaukee PBS brings you a chance to go back in time.

Recorded on location at Cedar Creek Park in Cedarburg, Wisconsin on a rainy August night, BoDeans co-founder Kurt Neumann leads the group through a set list of the band’s classic recordings as well as its new single “My Hometown”. Included in the set list are “Fadeaway,” “Good Things,” “Closer to Free,” and “Still the Night.” The program also visits Neumann at the Milwaukee County Historical Society for the opening of an exhibit featuring the band.

The end of the year approaches, and with it, one of Milwaukee PBS’s favorite annual traditions; Letters to Santa. Every year, the TV/Video Production students of the Milwaukee Area Technical College band together with MIlwaukee PBS to showcase the timeless magic of local children writing letters to jolly old St. Nick.
