s we leave spring and emerge into summer it is easy to note the many changes around us. The spring blooms are making way for the full foliage of these robust warmer months. As Wisconsinites we usually respond to all of this with a typical outpouring of joyous energy. Still, there are many among us who struggle to find joy. Dr. Thomas Insel states that 75 percent of mental illness is onset before the age of 25. Milwaukee PBS passionately cares about mental health issues, so I want to call your attention to an epic, two-night program, HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT, a documentary presented by Ken Burns, on youth mental illness premiering June 27 and 28 at 8 PM on Ch 10. The two-part documentary follows the journeys of 20 young Americans from all walks of life who have struggled with mental health. These young subjects share their stories of what they’ve learned about themselves, their families and the world around them. For those young viewers who have suffered silently, this documentary will open a door to a pathway to better health. We also will be airing again our award-winning documentary KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE a documentary about youth mental health. Created in collaboration with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, it powerfully encourages others to seek help for their mental health challenges. While we honor Mental Health Awareness this spring, this time period also is full of the programming you love on PBS Passport. In this issue we introduce you to three new programs that will take you from the corridors of power in Westminster to a Marine Homicide Unit to a hairdresser, who infiltrates the British neo-Nazi hierarchy of London in 1962. e begin May with an hour-long special exploring the issues surrounding teachers on Thursday the 5th at 7 PM. There is a looming crisis in education with teachers questioning their future in the classroom and a potential teacher shortage across the country. National Teacher Appreciation Week is the perfect time to begin this discussion as we talk with teachers, administrators, and students about life in the classroom and how we can help ensure our young learners are receiving the best instruction our society can provide. Also in May, on the 19th at 7 PM, we will celebrate our team of producers, videographers, and editors with another hour-long special, MILWAUKEE PBS’S STORIES OF THE YEAR highlighting the stories and shows that were honored with awards from the Milwaukee Press Club. This represents some of our best work over the last year and features stories from each of our public affairs shows – 10THIRTYSIX™, ADELANTE, and BLACK NOUVEAU. Also honored were our specials, AMERICA’S DAIRYLAND: AT THE CROSSROADS and our feature of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in their new home.

The Foundation currently underwrites ANTIQUES ROADSHOW on Monday evenings on Channel 10.1 and Saturday evenings on Channel 36.1 and DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD, daytimes Monday through Friday and Sunday mornings on Channel 10.1. The Jerome J. & Dorothy Holz Foundation has sponsored a variety of programming over the years, including THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, and the children’s programs CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG and ARTHUR. The Jerome J. & Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation was established by Jerry and Dorothy Holz in 1996. Jerry’s father Rudy opened Holz Motors in 1914 in Hales Corners. Growing up in an apartment over the family’s dealership downstairs, Jerry grew up immersed in every aspect of the auto business. Jerry loved the car business and attributed the success of the dealership to the hard work talent, and teamwork of each employee. Holz Motors received numerous awards, including Dealer of the Year Award from 2002-2008, and 2010, and the GMAC Champion of Life Award. Dorothy passed away in 2009 and Jerry followed her in 2017. Both Jerry and Dorothy valued giving back to Hales Corners and the Greater Milwaukee community during their lifetimes. The foundation they created continues to be a proud underwriter of Milwaukee PBS programming. “My grandmother, Dorothy, loved children. Underwriting DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD reflects her early vision for the Foundation to brighten the lives of kids in southeastern Wisconsin,” shared President J. J. Weis, about why the Foundation supports programming on Milwaukee PBS. “Both of my grandparents were proud of their families’ history and heritage. ANTIQUES ROADSHOW highlights their love of family treasures and stories.” Milwaukee PBS is thankful for its collaboration with the Jerome J. and Dorothy H. Land Girls Season 1 Follow Four Members of the Women’s Land Army During World War II

ollow the lives, loves, highs and lows of four members of the Women’s Land Army who are working at the Hoxley Estate during World War II in this BBC drama. As men fought on the battlefields, women from all walks of life worked the farms that fed the nation, doing their part to keep the home front running. Joyce, Nancy, Annie and Bea join the Land Army officially to help Britain’s war effort, but privately each has her own reasons for doing so.
