he Wisconsin Mathematics Council, Inc., (WMC) underwrites PBS’s Cyberchase, a children’s program on mathematics. The program is broadcast each week-day evening at 5:30 p.m. on Channel 10. Cyberchase is an Emmy Award winning television program, designed for kids ages 8 -11. The animated series features three kids, who use math and problem-solving concepts to help save Cyberchase from the exploits of Hacker. Each character on the series uses the math-power of fractions, percentages, multiplication, pre-algebra, and other math, to help solve the episode’s suspenseful adventures. The math topics in the series support standards for grades 3 through 5 of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Cyberchase’s website has features, games, math videos, and activities to support math learning. The Wisconsin Mathematics Council provides math-oriented activities and puzzles in the MPTV Kids Club Newsletter quarterly. “The Wisconsin Mathematics Council is proud to underwrite PBS’s Cyberchase on MPTV and support excellence in mathematics teaching and learning.” With its underwriting of Cyberchase, the Wisconsin Mathematics Council seeks to enhance math learning for all children through the promotion of quality mathematics education. It supports curriculum, best practices, learning theory, and educational technology that builds, enhances, and promotes mathematical proficiency and enthusiasm. WMC offers professional learning opportunities to support and foster highly effective teachers and leaders. WMC provides quality mathematics education leadership, services, and resources for Wisconsin teachers, administrators, parents and students, from pre-Kindergarten through higher education. MPTV V-ME, WORLD & CREATE LISTINGS

On the eve of the Great TV Auction, we are all set to offer “One Sweet Deal” to all viewers with a wide array of items up for bid, all to support public television. All year, individuals and businesses throughout viewing area have donated art, locally-sourced goods, family destination experiences, professional services and much more. We’ve also learned that those delicious Elegant Farmer pies will make an appearance as a steal item once again this year! Be sure to tune in to experience the nation’s most successful public television auction in progress. And, be sure to bid high and bid often. The Great TV Auction paves the way for incredible programs airing during the entire month. Most notably are programs that explore the lives of the many Americans who have served in the military and have shaped who we are today. Among the most anticipated of these programs is Coming Back with Wes Moore, a three-part documentary examining the brave men and women who have served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Moore, and Army combat veteran himself, takes viewers on an intimate journey of these veterans they return home, work to assimilate back into daily civilian life and, ultimately, identify a new mission and purpose in continuing to make significant contributions here at home. Coming Back with Wes Moore debuts on Tuesday, May 13th at 7:00 p.m. on Channel 10.

For more programs honoring our veterans in May, see pages 9 and 13. On behalf of the entire MPTV Family, we thank all of our donors who are military veterans, have veterans in their families, or currently have loved ones in service for the extraordinary service that has been brought to our nation.

F E AT U R E 2014 MPTV Great TV Auction Sweet: “One Sweet Deal” is our 2014 theme! It refers to both the great “deals” that winning bidders get and the sweets and treats we have all around the auction site for our volunteers! This year we even have a Great TV Auction Chocolate Bar that we’ll be selling. The bar was specially designed and created with only the best chocolate by The Chocolate Chisel! Amazing: Amazing doesn’t begin to cover the experience of pulling this event together – staff and volunteers working year round making thousands of calls, processing thousands of items, coordinating the efforts of countless supporters and making sure everything is ready by April 25!

T

Sharon Fischer-Toerpe Director of The Great TV Auction

he first Channel 10 Great TV Auction was held in 1969! Forty-five years later, it’s still going strong and a sure sign of Spring in southeast Wisconsin! Recently, we posed a question to our Auction Fans on Facebook. We wanted to find out what the auction meant to them so we asked them to sum up the auction in one word completing the phrase, “the Great TV Auction is…”

Expensive: Only for our “shop ‘til you drop” bidders! All those hearty souls who watch nine days straight of auction and bid on items every hour, on the hour! In reality, the Auction has always been and is still, one of the best places to find really incredible deals on all kinds of items from restaurants and travel to items for your home or tickets to shows. Entertaining: It’s live television – the ultimate reality show and once the cameras roll – we never know what can happen! Watch for celebrity hosts like John McGivern and Sandy Maxx! Legendary: The Channel 10 Great TV Auction began in 1969 and it quickly became the largest public television auction in the United States. Our million dollar auction far exceeds the televised auctions of most other stations and we’ve retained our title!

Here are some of the responses (with my comments!)

Greatest: Well, we are the Great TV Auction!

The Great TV Auction is:

Charitable: This is the point, isn’t it? We raise money for Milwaukee Public Television and we do it in a way that allows our donors to help us without having to spend any cash (which is great when times are tough) and our buyers to save money while supporting us!

Awesome: The Great TV Auction is awesome! It is truly a community event that pulls together thousands of businesses, thousands of donors, thousands of volunteers and thousands of bidders, all showing their support for MPTV in a 9-day shopping extravaganza! Exhilarating: With thousands of items and only minutes to bid on each one (all the while more and more are continually displayed) auction bidders have to stay alert! Exciting: Lights, Camera, Auction! The deals, the “steals” and television are an exciting mix! Come and volunteer and experience for yourself how much fun we have once the cameras start rolling! Help on the phone bank and your friends will see you on TV! Addicting: This word was mentioned more than once! And it’s true, once you start watching the auction and bidding, it’s hard to stop! Even the volunteers find the auction addicting and plan their vacations around the auction schedule! STEAL: Longtime fans of the Auction watch for their chance to snap up some of the great items that we offer at special low prices as “STEALS” of the night. 4

Fun: The definition of fun is enjoyment, amusement or lighthearted pleasure – and that certainly applies to the auction especially when you volunteer or are a winning bidder. But donors have fun to especially when they see their items on-air or get some new auction customers! Many more descriptive words were submitted, and I invite you to visit our “Channel 10 Great TV Auction” Facebook page and add the one word that you think best sums up the auction! While you are there check out the latest auction news, interesting items, contests and more! My “one word” that sums up The Great TV Auction: Grateful: The station and development staff are grateful for the 46 years of support that Milwaukee Public Television has received from our amazing donors, our incredible volunteers and our awesome bidders!

MPTV’s Everett L. Marshburn honored with Bayard Rustin Award from Diverse & Resilient

On the

Local Scene Everett L. Marshburn 2014 Bayard Rustin Leadership Award winner.

The award was presented at Diverse and Resilient’s second-annual Reviving the Dream Celebration the evening of March 20, 2014 at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Milwaukee. Bayard Rustin was the chief organizer of the historic 1963 March on Washington which helped build momentum for the passage of civil rights legislation, and throughout his life was an inspiring leader in the fight for equal rights for people of all colors and sexual orientations. The annual award honors a person who reflects the spirit of Rustin, and Everett's work at MPTV and throughout his public television career -- telling the stories of individuals who have shown courage and commitment in the face of resistance -- made him an ideal candidate. Congratulations Everett!

In May, Milwaukee Public Television’s locally-produced programs cover a range of topics. Outdoor Wisconsin visits with Lewis & Clark, two adopted brown bear cubs named after the famous explorers. Find out why they’re living at the Shalom Wildlife Sanctuary in West Bend. Black Nouveau partners with WUWM to host a town hall meeting on May 20th focusing on the high incarceration rate of black males in Wisconsin. The Arts Page focuses on thought-provoking art and the soul of the artist. InterChange continues conversations on the hot issues in the Milwaukee area. I Remember features Fritz Usinger, president, Usinger’s Famous Sausage and commemorates Memorial Day with Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Gary G. Wetzel. On the Issues with Mike Gousha hosts Craig Steven Wilder, the author of Ebony and Ivy: Race, Slavery, and the Troubled History of America’s Universities. There are also some notable repeats that Milwaukee audiences wont’ want to miss. Wisconsin Remembers John F. Kennedy, Wisconsin Supper Clubs: An Old-Fashioned Experience, Veterans of the Forgotten War and the five-part series The Making of Milwaukee are just a few programs featuring Wisconsin and the Milwaukee area. If you missed Peter Pan from Milwaukee Ballet in April you’ll get another chance to watch it on May 4. Tune in each week to find out what’s new in Milwaukee and Wisconsin. In August 1943 a few hundred slave labourers did so, and today only two witnesses remain: Samuel Willenberg and Kalman Taigman. Revealing their powerful testimonies, this important film sheds powerful new light on Treblinka and documents their remarkable histories after the atrocities as they continued to lead extraordinary lives. 5/11, 9p.m. 10HD

NO GOING BACK: WOMEN AND THE WAR NO GOING BACK: WOMEN AND THE WAR explores how the lives of women, and their roles in society, changed during and after the Civil War. Singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter narrates. Interviews with well-known historians and academics, reenactments at Civil War-era landmarks, and dramatic readings from the letters and journals of women illuminate this fascinating chapter in American history. 5/11, 11:30p.m. 36HD

NOVA: Escape From Nazi Alcatraz Colditz Castle, a notorious prisoner of war camp in Nazi Germany, was supposed to be escape-proof. But in World War II, a group of British officers dreamt up an escape plan: in a secret attic workshop, they constructed a two-man glider out of bed sheets and floorboards. The plan was to fly to freedom from the roof of the castle, but the war ended before they could put it to the test. Now a team of aero engineers and carpenters rebuilds the glider. Then, after a 70-year wait, the team finally finds out if the legendary glider plan would have succeeded. 5/14, 8p.m 10HD

THE GHOST ARMY War, deception and art come together in this astonishing true story of American G.I.s who tricked the enemy with rubber tanks, sound effects and carefully crafted illusions during WWII. This remarkable tale of a top-secret mission that was at once absurd, deadly and amazingly effective. 5/16, 9p.m. 36HD

LOOKING OVER JORDAN: AFRICAN AMERICANS AND THE WAR As Northern armies swept south, self-emancipated slaves sought refuge behind Union lines. Determined to claim basic human rights, these former slaves-turned-soldiers fought valiantly for the Union – and many sacrificed their lives for the cause. The program chronicles the black experience in the South before, during and after the war. 5/19, 11:30p.m 10HD - CONTINUE ON PAGE 13

THE MEN WHO SAILED THE LIBERTY SHIPS The Merchant Marines — volunteer civilian sailors — held one of the most dangerous jobs of World War II: sailing cargo ships loaded with food, fuel and raw materials to the frontlines. As a result, they also suffered some of the highest casualty rates of the war. Despite their valiant support of the Allied war effort, veteran merchant seamen waited 45 years before they received official recognition from the U.S. government. 5/25, 6a.m. 36HD

EAGLES OF MERCY EAGLES OF MERCY recounts a seldom-told chapter in the World War II narrative. In the early hours of June 6, 1944, two young American medics with the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles" parachuted into France, and soon found themselves trapped in a 12th-century Norman church in the small village of Angoville-au-Plain. Medics Robert Wright and Kenneth Moore provided first aid to the first casualties of D-Day while a savage battle raged outside between American and German forces. 5/25, 7a.m. 36HD

DAY OF DAYS: JUNE 6, 1944 To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landing, four D-Day veterans gather at the famed Museum of World War II outside of Boston, Mass. to share their experiences from that fateful "Day of Days." Cameras eavesdrop on their conversations as they vividly recall details from their ordeal — from the perils of the amphibious assault to the invasion's gruesome aftermath. 5/25, noon 36HD

THE MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR SALUTES OUR ARMED FORCES A 2011 concert special pays tribute to the men and women who have served the United States in times of war. Taped at Temple Square in Salt Lake City, THE MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR SALUTES OUR ARMED FORCES intercuts selected performances by the world-renowned, 360-voice choir with inspirational video vignettes featuring veterans of World War II, Iraq and Afghanistan. 5/25, 2p.m. 36HD

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: DEATH AND THE CIVIL WAR Drawing heavily on “This Republic of Suffering”, historian and Harvard president Drew Gilpin Faust’s acclaimed book, Death and the Civil War explores a critical but largely overlooked aspect of the Civil War experience: the immense and varied implications of the war’s staggering and unprecedented death toll. 5/26, 8p.m. 10HD

THE TYPIST The Typist follows the life and work of Larry Tillemans, believed to be the last living clerk-typist from the Nuremberg Trials. As a sergeant in the U.S. 3rd Army, it was Larry's duty to document the testimony of victims and perpetrators of the Holocaust – information that deeply affected the young Midwesterner. 5/26, 10p.m. 10HD

ESCAPE IN THE PACIFIC: 1943 ESCAPE IN THE PACIFIC: 1943 delivers a dramatic, gripping account of one of the most remarkable incidents of World War II — the only successful group escape from a Japanese POW camp. ESCAPE IN THE PACIFIC also chronicles the events leading up to the fall of the Philippines and the Japanese occupation, and later concludes on the home front, as some members of the "Davao Dozen" seek to rally the country to the plight of their comrades still in captivity. 5/26, 11p.m. 10HD

D-Day Uncovered D-Day was a logistical effort on a scale never seen before or since. This film takes advantage of LiDAR technology to recreate the landscape and allow viewers to switch effortlessly between the macro and the micro - pulling back for the big picture and zooming in to a close-up of a single soldier on the battlefield. 5/27, 8p.m. 10HD

EISENHOWER'S SECRET WAR EISENHOWER'S SECRET WAR examines Dwight D. Eisenhower's unwavering commitment — both public and covert — to peaceful co-existence with the USSR in the tumultuous and uneasy Cold War years. Based on recent research by established scholars and writers, the two-part documentary series provides a fresh understanding of how Eisenhower's national security policies and tactics kept a divided world at peace during the 1950s and in the ensuing decades. 3/27, 10p.m. HD

ANGLE OF ATTACK ANGLE OF ATTACK chronicles the 100-year history of Naval aviation — from wobbly gliders and the first shipboard landing in 1911 to modern supersonic jets and unmanned aerial vehicles. The two-hour documentary deftly interweaves archival footage, interviews with historical and military experts, contemporary footage of cutting-edge aircraft and insights from today's "Top Gun" fighter pilots in the Marine Corps and Navy. 5/28, 10p.m. 10HD

HEBBURN Hebburn is a warm and affectionate tale of north east family life. It tells the tale of the Pearson family and their impetuous and ambitious son, Jack, who has left Tyneside for the bright lights and glamour of Manchester. He has secretly married (while in Las Vegas) a middle class Jewish girl, Sarah, and realizes that it is about time he introduced her to his family. New Series starts 5/10, 8:30pm 10HD

VETERANS OF THE FORGOTTEN WAR For most Americans, the Korean Conflict is the “Forgotten War,” sandwiched between World War II and Vietnam. The three year engagement (1950-53) did not end with victory as did World War II, nor did it stir the passions and divisions of our nation like Vietnam; yet it had a profound impact on the United States and the world. MPTV honors Wisconsin Veterans who fought in Korea and explains the significance of the conflict and its impact on the Cold War. 5/24, 11a.m. 36HD Complete Up-to-Date Program Listings and Repeats on mptv.org

OMING BACK WITH WES MOORE, a new three-episode series executive produced by best-selling author and U.S. army veteran Wes Moore, tells the story of his search for answers to some of the most difficult questions facing veterans returning from war. Moore’s journey, spurred by the suicide of one of his oldest friends and a fellow officer, takes him into the personal lives of different soldiers as they attempt to reintegrate into society, establish new identities and – for many – find a new mission.

Events for Baby Boomers and Beyond MPTV is proud to partner with the Helen Bader Foundation to bring a second season of Next Avenue: Community Conversations to baby boomers and beyond. On May 12 join us at St. John’s on the Lake, 1840 N. Prospect Ave. in Milwaukee, when Marquette University Professor Anees Sheikh, Ph.D. discusses the “Art of Happiness”. The event begins at 6:00 pm and free parking is available in several locations nearby. The Next Avenue initiative strives to present information on five different areas that help community members live a robust second chapter of their lives. May’s event focuses on Health and Well-Being. The other topic areas are Work and Purpose; Caregiving; Money and Security; and Living and Learning. The intent is to help grownups keep on growing. MPTV will be hosting events featuring each topic throughout the rest of 2014. Each event is streamed live online so if people can’t make the event, they can participate remotely. The programs will be shown on-air later this year. In March, Next Avenue presented WKLH’s Morning Show Hosts Dave Luczak and Carole Caine who discussed how they have remained relevant over their long career and why giving back to the community is so important. If you missed this event, you can watch it on demand on MPTV’s website. Visit mptv.org and click on Next Avenue for more information.

ctober 14th 2013 was the 70th anniversary of an event that shook the Nazi party to its core. In east Poland, at the remote Nazi death camp of Sobibor, 300 Jewish prisoners staged a bloody break out. To mark the anniversary, this film travels back Sobibor with the last remaining survivors to reveal their extraordinary story of courage, desperation and determination. The multi-layered plot unfolds like a Hollywood blockbuster yet every terrible and inspiring moment of this story is absolutely true.

NOVA: D-DAY'S SUNKEN SECRETS

O

n June 6, 1944, the Allies launched an armada to invade the Normandy beaches and liberate Europe from the Nazis. Hundreds of ships sank while running the gauntlet of mines and bunkers, creating one of the world’s largest underwater archaeological sites. Now, NOVA has exclusive access to an extensive survey of the seabed bordering the beachheads. Dive teams, submersibles and underwater robots will identify key examples of the Allied craft that fell victim to German shellfire, mines and torpedoes. Highlighting the ingenious technology that helped the Allies overcome the German defenses the program presents a blow-by-blow account of D-Day.

EAD AHEAD: THE GRATEFUL DEAD IN CONCERT, recorded during the Grateful Dead’s historic eight-night run of shows at New York’s Radio City Music Hall in 1980, marked the only time the Dead would play at the famous theater. DEAD AHEAD: THE GRATEFUL DEAD IN CONCERT presents highlights of those sets. The public television re-release will contain new interviews with band members as well as a revised running order.
