COVER STORY:
LIFE ON EARTH: ATTENBOROUGH’S GREATEST ADVENTURE

PREMIERING
Wednesday, May 6 at 7PM on Channel 10.1
Sir David Attenborough embarked on an ambitious three-year global odyssey to film LIFE ON EARTH, an innovative documentary of unprecedented scale. Attenborough and his team traveled to 40 countries to document over 600 species and faced extraordinary challenges along the way, including a coup in the Comoros, gunshots in Rwanda, and threats from Saddam Hussein’s army in Iraq. Written and presented by Attenborough, LIFE ON EARTH set out to “tell the greatest story in all the world”: how life on our planet evolved.
Fifty years after production began, and in celebration of Attenborough’s 100th birthday, LIFE ON EARTH: ATTENBOROUGH’S GREATEST ADVENTURE offers rare, behindthe-scenes insight into the making of the groundbreaking series. Featuring exclusive interviews with Attenborough and his original crew, the special captures the triumphs
and setbacks of filming the series during a pivotal era in television history, when jet travel and color filming were relatively new.
"Few series have made an impact the way LIFE ON EARTH did, truly reshaping our understanding of the natural world,” said Paula Kerger, PBS President and CEO. “Sir David Attenborough's vision set a standard we're still reaching toward fifty years later. We are so proud to share this new film, and to celebrate his unparalleled contribution to our shared understanding of the planet we call home."
LIFE ON EARTH was the first series to combine cutting-edge camera technology and techniques. Timelapse, microphotography, and filming speeds of up to 10,000 frames per second were used to capture animal movement in ways never before seen — from striking rattlesnakes to leaping lemurs and hovering hummingbirds. New Kodak

film stock allowed the team to produce some of the sharpest and most colorful wildlife footage at the time, while the new Canon 300 lens enabled the camera crew to film at dawn and dusk and document new animal behavior previously thought impossible to record.
LIFE ON EARTH became the first worldwide natural history blockbuster, mesmerizing viewers with incredible photography and transforming public perception of the natural world. The documentary details how the team captured some of the series’ most astounding moments — a lioness ferociously taking down a wildebeest, the rare moment a male Darwin’s frog “gives birth” by mouth, and Attenborough’s unforgettable encounter with mountain gorillas in Rwanda, often voted one of the greatest television moments of all time.

Be My Neighbor Day Connects Community
More than 1,600 neighbors gathered at the Milwaukee Public Library on March 14 for Milwaukee PBS’s BE MY NEIGHBOR DAY, transforming a late-winter Saturday into a joyful celebration of kindness, community, and connection.
Presented in partnership with the Milwaukee Public Library, Fred Rogers Productions, and supported by PNC Grow Up Great®, the free, family-friendly event brought Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood to life through hands-on activities, storytelling, and opportunities to meet Daniel Tiger himself. Children and caregivers explored interactive stations focused on early learning, creativity, and what it means to be a caring neighbor.

Throughout the day, moments of simple joy and generosity unfolded. Staff and volunteers greeted families, helped children create cards for community helpers, and kept lines moving with smiles—and stickers— while young fans waited to meet Daniel Tiger. Many team members even gave away their own Daniel Tiger ears to children, creating small but meaningful moments that reflected the spirit of the event.
The response from partners and attendees alike was overwhelmingly positive. Library staff expressed excitement about the strong turnout, and representatives from PNC Grow Up Great® shared how impressed they were with the energy and impact of the day.
While Milwaukee PBS offers a wide range of programming, BE MY NEIGHBOR DAY is a powerful reminder of its role beyond the screen—bringing families together, fostering kindness, and strengthening community connections. As Milwaukee PBS looks ahead, the success of this year’s event reinforces its commitment to serving as a trusted neighbor and creating meaningful experiences for the community it serves.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Barbara Haig and Dan Schley
Long time donors love the arts, volunteering and Milwaukee PBS.
My husband, Dan Schley, and I have lived in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Milwaukee for many years. We were both selfemployed before recently retiring, and now we’re actively involved in supporting the arts and volunteering to keep our neighborhood a strong and exciting place to live and work.

Like many families, we started watching Milwaukee PBS with our kids for MISTER ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD and SESAME STREET. Now evenings at our house often revolve around using our PBS Passport to watch shows such as FINDING YOUR ROOTS, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE and GREAT PERFORMANCES – each offering new perspectives and sparking lively conversations.
On our kitchen TV, we tune in with a standard antenna for cooking inspiration from COOKS COUNTRY, dinner entertainment with Sandy Maxx’s THE ARTS PAGE and laughter with the familiar charm of JOHN MCGIVERN’S MAIN STREETS. We keep the current issue of Fine Tuning nearby so we can look up show timing, and if we come across ANTIQUES ROADSHOW on 36HD, we are glued to the screen for an hour!
Milwaukee PBS is important because it connects us to both local stories and national experiences. It brings us programs that educate, inspire and celebrate our community, offering a space where diverse voices are heard and cherished. Supporting Milwaukee PBS is a priority for us, because it is an important investment in education, culture and the values that make our city special.
