Dan Mueller I

n October of 2009 I was fortunate to be at the Bon Iver concert at Milwaukee’s Riverside Theater. The Riverside was sold out, with people coming in from all over the country to catch this Wisconsin indie rock sensation performing in its home state. Radio Milwaukee simulcast the concert and the buzz around this performance in town was nothing short of palpable. At a post-concert event, I was basking in the glow of a tremendously successful show when I had the pleasure to be introduced to some leaders of the indie rock world from around the country, every one of whom commended Milwaukee for its burgeoning indie rock scene. We have much to enjoy in southeast Wisconsin when it comes to live performance – from the fine arts to indie rock. As we continue to celebrate our 65th anniversary, we are pleased to present our newest gift to you, RHYTHM CAFÉ MKE. This program is a digital series you can watch now on Milwaukee PBS Passport and on the web at rhythmcafemke.com. RHYTHM CAFÉ MKE brings you up close to indie music artists here – their music, their stories in their voices brought to you by the award winning team at Milwaukee PBS.

NOVA "YOUR BRAIN: PERCEPTION DECEPTION"

Is what you see real? Join neuroscientist Heather Berlin on a quest to understand how your brain shapes your reality, and why you can't always trust what you perceive. Learn the surprising tricks and shortcuts the brain takes to help us survive. 2-part series airing Wednesday, May 17 and 24 at 8PM on 10.1.

Later this month, our anniversary takes an interesting turn and, once again you are invited to join us as we do something unprecedented - inaugurate the exhibition Milwaukee PBS at 65: Looking Back and Moving Forward. Yes, we are putting our 65 years of history into an exhibition located in the Create Gallery on the downtown campus of Milwaukee Area Technical College, located on the first floor of the Main Building. This exhibit will be free and open to both our campus and Milwaukee communities. We hope that you stop by and pay it a visit. We invite you to stay up to date on all of our anniversary activities by visiting our Milwaukee PBS 65th anniversary website: Milwaukee.pbs.org/65 and we thank you, once again, for your generous support. This hands-on approach is a critical component to the success of the program. “Students that participate in the Student Operations Day benefit a great deal by gaining experience in live broadcasting as well as having student content aired on Milwaukee PBS,” said Student Operations Day

Student Producer Andrew Simon. “This differs a lot from different programs because this allows students the opportunity to air their shows on broadcast TV, and not many college students can say they’ve made a show that has aired on TV.” Don’t miss this annual experience on May 6 starting at 11 am on Milwaukee PBS 36.1.

New Digital-First Local Music Series Rhythm Cafe MKE Available Beginning May 1

W

elcome to RHYTHM CAFE MKE, where we're connecting you with a front-row seat to performances by your favorite Milwaukee musicians. RHYTHM CAFE MKE is Milwaukee PBS' brand new digital first music series showcasing the city's most talented artists. And we're doing it from one of the city's great venues, Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co., in the heart of the Walker's Point neighborhood. Each episode features exclusive, original, up-close and personal performances and profiles in which artists reveal the inspiration and influences behind their music. We’re featuring an array of soundscapes from rock, jazz, hip-hop, soul and everything in between. Producers Darin Malkowski and Justin Migliano thought Milwaukee PBS was the perfect place for the series. “Music and arts are at the soul of PBS,” said Malkowski. “Milwaukee has a great music scene full of artists to showcase original songs written and created by them.” Another aspect of RHYTHM CAFE MKE is the opportunity to include MATC Television and eProduction students in the creation of the series. They are recording behind-the-scenes footage for segments and social media. “Shooting footage for the segments provides them the opportunity to contribute and also watch how this is done at a professional level,” said Migliano. “It is truly a team effort across the station once we get all aspects involved.” Viewers can watch our new digital first music series on milwaukeepbs.org, the Milwaukee PBS App, rhythmcafemke.com and You Tube.
