Welcome from Debbie Hamlett
March brings a mix of special programming created specifically to support Milwaukee PBS and other PBS stations fundraising efforts. As always, we’re deeply grateful that you’ve already chosen to invest in this station and the service it provides. Our on-air fundraising is thoughtfully designed to reach those who haven’t yet taken that step. This is one of the most effective and efficient ways to welcome new members to help sustain public media.
DOWNTON ABBEY (SEASON 1)
Created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park), Downton Abbey depicts the lives of the noble Crawley family and the staff who serve them, set at their Edwardian country house in 1912.
3/1, 2:30PM 10.1
Along with December, March represents one of our most significant fundraising periods. As of January 31, $1.9 million remains to be raised by June 30th to fully fund this year’s service. Your sustained giving, and continued viewership, and the generosity of your friends and neighbors help make this goal achievable.
March invites us to look a little closer—at our history, our neighbors, our natural world, and the forces shaping our future.
BRADY STREET: PORTRAIT OF A NEIGHBORHOOD explores one of Milwaukee's most iconic locales. We trace its history as one of the city's quintessential immigrant communities, to becoming a hotbed for 1960's counterculture, then its decline into a "classic American ghetto," and to its resurgence in the 1990’s, Brady Street now sits at the crossroads of Milwaukee’s culture.
AMERICAN MASTERS: BELLA! THIS WOMAN’S PLACE IS IN THE HOUSE. Follow the meteoric rise of firebrand politician and activist Bella Abzug. See how her commitment to women's rights and progressive causes upended the status quo in Washington.
Over the past year, we’ve partnered with the Milwaukee County Historical Society on THE MAKING OF MILWAUKEE curriculum for elementary grades. This exciting project will launch soon and be available to use through our website for anyone!
Your support helps to make all of this and so much more possible. As a Milwaukee PBS member, you ensure that lifelong learning thrives and that high-quality programming remains available —free to all. Thank you for your steadfast dedication to public media here at home. with appreciation,
Debbie Hamlett Vice President and General Manager

COVER STORY:
A stellar cast leads lavish reimagining
of THE FORSYTE SAGA
NEW 6-PART SERIES
ThisPREMIERING
Sunday, March 22 at 8PM on Channel 10.1
month, PBS brings you a major new reimagining of John Galsworthy’s FORSYTE novels. Planned as a returning series, the first season of six episodes follows the lives of the wealthy Forsyte family in 1880s London and is based on Galsworthy’s Nobel Prize-winning tale of love, loyalty, ambition and betrayal.
The stellar ensemble cast includes Francesca Annis, Jack Davenport, Tom Durant Pritchard, Jamie Flatters, Millie Gibson, Danny Griffin, Susan Hampshire, Owen Igiehon, Tuppence Middleton, Stephen Moyer, Joshua Orpin, Josette Simon and Eleanor Tomlinson.
BAFTA winner Francesca Annis (Flesh and Blood) plays formidable Forsyte matriarch Ann, with Stephen Moyer (Sexy Beast, True Blood) as her eldest son, Jolyon Senior, head of the family stockbroking firm Forsyte & Co.
Danny Griffin (Fate: The Winx Saga) plays his bohemian son Jo, Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey: A
New Era) is Jo’s status-driven wife Frances, and Eleanor Tomlinson (One Day) plays Louisa Byrne, a Soho dressmaker and Jo’s first love.
Jack Davenport (The Morning Show, Ten Percent) plays Ann’s competitive younger son James, with Joshua Orpin (Titans) as James’ shrewd and sometimes ruthless son Soames.
Millie Gibson (Doctor Who) plays Irene, the dancer whom Soames falls in love with. Tom Durant Pritchard (This Is Going To Hurt) plays Monty Dartie, James’ son-in-law.
Josette Simon OBE (Anatomy of a Scandal) is Mrs. Ellen Parker Barrington, a wealthy heiress and friend of the Forsyte family, with Jamie Flatters (Avatar: The Way Of Water) as architect Philip Bosinney and Owen Igiehon (Disclaimer) as lawyer Isaac Cole. Susan Hampshire OBE (star of the 1967 BBC Forsyte Saga for which she received the first of her three lead actress Emmys), plays Lady Carteret.
Screenwriter Debbie Horsfield notes, “It was an honour to be asked to write a bold new reimagining of Galsworthy’s epic saga. Our show is in part a prequel to the events of the first book, but also an opportunity to expand the world and place the women of the family centre stage. It’s a love letter to the original story while offering an exciting new perspective.”
Susanne Simpson, Executive Producer of MASTERPIECE, added, “We’re proud to commission a new, original take on THE FORSYTE SAGA. This s weeping, romantic drama portrays how duty binds a family together until it conflicts with matters of the heart. Debbie Horsfield’s inspired scripts will be realized by an exceptional cast and supported by a lavish production. We’re thrilled to be creating another one of the high-quality period dramas that MASTERPIECE has always been known for.”

Learning How to Set Goals With Donkey Hodie
Setting and achieving goals helps kids (and grown-ups) build self-esteem — and teaches perseverance, too.
When children set goals, it helps them practice executive function skills like planning. Children use these skills in school and life as they learn new, more complex concepts.
Practice setting a goal with your child like Donkey Hodie and Purple Panda do in “The Goalies.” In the episode, Donkey and Panda become “goalies” as they set and achieve goals throughout the day.
3 Easy Steps for Goal-Setting With Kids
First, start by defining the word goal for your child. Explain that a goal is something you want to do. Talk about how you have to try hard, plan, and practice to reach a goal.
Next, give an example of a goal. Maybe your child wants to learn how to balance on one foot or share their toys with a sibling. In “The Goalies,” Donkey tried to balance a pineapple while walking, and Panda wanted to clean up his toys. While it wasn’t easy, they both kept on trying!
Another approach for helping your child learn is to set a family goal. Begin by describing a problem that needs to be solved and ways you could help one another achieve that goal. For example, if your family feels rushed in the morning, set a goal that everyone will organize their jackets, backpacks, or other items the night before instead of in the morning.
You may also need to remind children that it takes time to achieve a goal, and often, it’s not done in one hour or even in one day! Achieving goals takes practice, but step by step, your child will learn how to accomplish new goals and feel so proud of themselves when they do!

Longtime member sees three generations inspired by Milwaukee PBS
I’m a 90-year-old mom of four and grandmother of nine. I would like to share my sixty-five-year journey as a viewer and supporter of PBS with you.
I have enjoyed PBS throughout all the seasons of my adult life. As a new mother, my children and I watched SESAME STREET and MR. ROGERS as part of our daily routine. As an educator in the classroom, I used PBS news programs to support teaching current events and history. As an older mother, I was inspired by Julia Child’s cooking program. I also enjoyed shows with a focus on music or art, such as Andre Rieu and the Celtic Irish shows. My husband and I regularly watched PBS on Sunday evenings, particularly the mystery shows, our favorites being MIDSOMER MURDERS, LORD LYNLEY, MISS SCARLET, GRANTCHESTER and the MISS FISHER mysteries. We were also inspired by RICK STEVES’ travel shows and took trips to over twelve European countries.
My personal favorite show is ALL CREATURES GREAT & SMALL, which I watch repeatedly and particularly savor the final Christmas episodes. I also enjoyed all of the Jane Austen programs. Seeing Darcy and Lizzy come to life was a special treat.
Now my adult children are also supporters and viewers of PBS and delighting in their favorite programs. Our lives have been greatly impacted by the quality programming of public television. More than ever, our democracy needs an informed citizenry with access to programming that includes fair and truthful content. We will continue to be supporters and viewers of public television for all the valuable content that it provides.

Henry David Thoreau helped define modern environmentalism and nonviolent resistance, yet his life has been obscured by myth. The author of Walden and Civil Disobedience, he was brilliant but flawed, idealistic but opinionated.
