DURAN DURAN A Diamond in the Mind

Letter from

Bohdan Zachary I always enjoy hearing from viewers, whether it’s an email or a phone call (I even get feedback while grocery shopping or taking a walk through our city). Whether it’s an observation, a compliment or a complaint, learning what works and what doesn’t helps guide Milwaukee PBS in its mission to represent the needs and interests of our diverse community. I’m writing this as the Impeachment Trial nears its end. Several viewers reached out wondering why we aired the proceedings on Channel 36, when cable networks were also providing coverage. The answer is simple—Milwaukee has more viewers watching television free and over-the-air than most other cities in the country. More than 20 percent of Milwaukee PBS viewers watch using an antenna; they don’t have the ability to watch channels on cable or satellite. We will always air coverage of political milestones as part of our mission and our civic duty. In the infrequent times we pre-empt regularly scheduled programming (for example, the State of the Union), you can always view a robust offer of programs on-demand using Milwaukee PBS Passport. It’s easy to use and one of the benefits available for members of Milwaukee PBS. If you don’t have Passport yet, feel free to call us for more information. One of the wonders of our region is a culinary diversity that acknowledges our many ethnic heritages and our state’s passion for great food. The CREATE channel presents a variety of programs showcasing local, national and global series about food. Additionally, on Channels 10 and 36, we feature terrific productions from local and regional producers highlighting what makes Wisconsin’s food scene unique. The award-winning series WISCONSIN FOODIE is back for a new season with a new host, acclaimed chef Luke Zahm. Organic dairy farmer Inga Witscher also returns with a new season of AROUND THE FARM TABLE, and for those who love Eastern European food as much as I do, watch Channel 36 Sundays at 10:00 am for FLAVOR OF POLAND with Aleksandra August, which is shot on location around Poland.

2

Lastly, I’d like to acknowledge Milwaukee PBS producers Maryann Lazarski and Scottie Lee Meyers, along with Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Rory Linnane, for outstanding work that demonstrates the power of public television and superb storytelling. KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE is the half-hour documentary about youth mental health challenges that has been impacting teens, families and communities across the country since premiering on Milwaukee PBS and USA Today last May. To date, we’ve received more than 250 requests for DVDs of the documentary for use in facilitating discussions about this national epidemic. The program has aired nationally on PBS local stations and also the WORLD channel. For their outstanding work, Maryann, Scottie and Rory received a 2019 Award for Community Engagement at a recent conference of NETA, the National Educational Telecommunications Association. Most importantly, the project has made a real difference in the lives of young people struggling with challenges. After attending one of the community screenings, a 13-year-old girl contacted Alex Hart-Upendo, one of the four youth featured in our film, and shared, “I’ve been in a deep depression lately and really struggling with my mental health. I have been having suicidal thoughts and I have felt completely worthless. I left the screening feeling empowered. I used some of the contacts you gave out and I’m proud to say for the first time I’m in therapy." That's the power of what Milwaukee PBS can accomplish because of your generous financial support. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Vice President & General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

On the Local Scene 10THIRTYSIX™ examines how mental illness stigma in

Milwaukee’s African American community discourages people from getting help. To assist the community in dealing with those issues, the Milwaukee Health Department launched a new workshop to help hair stylists recognize and treat emotional distress. We'll take you inside a local barbershop and hair salon as we hear from both stylists and clients who say having sensitive conversations makes a huge difference. Plus, we'll have an update on how our documentary on youth mental health is impacting public policy in Wisconsin.

Whether retirement is way off in the future, a few years away, or has already arrived, Suze provides the essential steps that can make viewers’ retirement successful and secure. As Suze tells the audience, “It is never too soon to begin.” The special was taped at the dazzling Frank Gehry-designed New World Center in Miami Beach in front of an enthusiastic live audience. RISE UP: SONGS OF THE WOMEN’S MOVEMENT celebrates the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment by chronicling the role that music played in one of the nation’s most dynamic social movements of the 20th century. Hit songs that became empowering and beloved anthems are performed by Aretha Franklin, Lesley Gore, Helen Reddy, Loretta Lynn, Janis Ian, Holly Near, Gloria Gaynor, Dolly Parton, Joan Jett, Cyndi Lauper, Melissa Etheridge, Tina Turner, Eurythmics (Annie Lennox) and others. This dynamic soundtrack of the women’s movement also features footage of historic milestones in women’s liberation woven together with new interviews with performers and leading activists, including Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda and Toni Van Pelt, President of NOW. The special chronicles the music and events from the early 1900s through the late 80s, with a second installment bringing the movement up to the present day planned. RISE UP: SONGS OF THE WOMEN’S MOVEMENT is produced by Heather A. Smith, Donna Korones and multiple Emmy Award-winner Jim Brown.

HONORED WITH NATIONAL AWARD

10THIRTYSIX™ and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK–Wisconsin Recognized for Documentary That Ignited National Conversation on Youth & Mental Health In 2019, Milwaukee PBS premiered a new documentary on mental health among Wisconsin’s youth. KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE brakes down the stigma and shines a light of truth on this subject, and was just honored with a 2019 NETA (National Education Telecommunications Association) Award for Community Engagement in the Local Project division. A collaboration between Milwaukee PBS and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK–Wisconsin, KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE tells the gripping stories of four local young people and their experiences with mental health challenges and suicidal thoughts. The documentary continues to generate a significant amount of public conversation throughout the state and the country. In September 2019, the producers and the four young people featured in the documentary were invited to the State Capitol by the Assembly Speaker's Task Force on Suicide Prevention to screen the film and to discuss the issue of mental health among Wisconsin’s youth. This inspired public policy recommendations regarding mental health awareness and care in Wisconsin. Nationwide, hundreds of schools and civic organizations have screened KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE in their communities. Also, PBS stations across the country have aired it, inspiring conversation and fostering awareness throughout the United States. The documentary has also received a regional Emmy Award and the 2019 Katherine Schneider Journalism Award for Excellence in Reporting on Disability by the National Center on Disability and Journalism. For more information on KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU'RE NOT ALONE, and for mental health resources, visit: MilwaukeePBS.org/KidsInCrisis.

WATCH MATC STUDENT PROGRAMS on Milwaukee PBS

This March, Milwaukee PBS 36.1 hosts a fresh new lineup of student-produced shows, from Milwaukee Area Technical College's Television & Video Production academic program. Many people dream of becoming TV directors, producers, editors and videographers, and at MATC, students have the opportunity to combine their vision with the expertise of Emmy award-winning mentors and instructors to do just that. Every student in the Advanced Broadcast Program Production class has spent two years learning and developing the skills they need to carry out each part of the process. They've learned how to write compelling dialogue, cast on-screen talent, light the perfect shot, piece the story together in the edit suite, all the way to marketing their program. Students pull together ideas from their own life experiences, the hobbies that bring them joy and the urge to help inform their communities about the issues that matter. This year's lineup showcases a variety of topics. For the foodie there’s THE LOCAL FOOD TRAVEL, highlighting restaurants you'll wish you had known about for years. For those looking for laughs, PAINTED FACES is a surrealist comedy following bandmates trying to make it in the tough world of high school. There will also be several shows that intend to educate viewers on issues our community faces. WHEN IS ENOUGH ENOUGH? explains how recycling works right here in Milwaukee and A HOUSE ON FIRE details the way politics have impacted our climate. The students cover a variety of topics sure to interest many viewers. Viewers will be able to tune in to see what students have created starting at midnight on March 1. Shows air every Sunday starting at 12:00 a.m. and continue through April 26. Check program listings for complete program information. Photo Credit: Kevin Pulz

Milwaukee PBS’ own Dan Small was recently recognized with the 2019 Conservation Educator Award from the Wisconsin State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF). Dan has been the host of OUTDOOR WISCONSIN since the show began 36 seasons ago. Dan accepted the award at the Wisconsin State Chapter of the NWTF’s annual convention in January 2020. With chapters in every state, the national organization is a leader in upland wildlife habitat conservation in North America. The NWTF is dedicated to the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of hunting heritage. OUTDOOR WISCONSIN airs Thursdays at 9:00 p.m. on Milwaukee PBS 10.1.

Thanks to our

FOUNDATION PARTNER

Milwaukee PBS is pleased to recognize the Krainz Foundation, a foundation partner since 2018. They are local sponsors of both CLASSIC GOSPEL and THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW. The Krainz Foundation was founded by Wisconsin residents Robert and Katherine Krainz and Dale Martin and his late wife, Trudy Martin. Through the years, one of Dale and Trudy Martin’s happiest memories was staying home on Saturday evenings to watch one of their favorite Milwaukee PBS programs, THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW. Another show they both enjoyed was CLASSIC GOSPEL. When Dale’s beloved wife Trudy passed away in 2017, Dale thought it most fitting to support Milwaukee PBS, whose programming brought much pleasure to Trudy and Dale during their marriage. In addition to underwriting programming on Milwaukee PBS, the Krainz Foundation supports the Parkinson’s Association. The Foundation has also been a significant donor to the Greendale Veterans Memorial that was dedicated in October 2019. According to Dale Martin, “The Krainz Foundation supports Milwaukee PBS because it provides quality programming for the entire family, from children’s literacy shows like SESAME STREET to adult programming such as CLASSIC GOSPEL.“ Milwaukee PBS is deeply appreciative of the underwriting commitment from the Krainz Foundation. We thank them for their support! Mimi Notestein, Director of Foundation Relations 26
