Welcome from Debbie Hamlett

Happysummer! Nothing says summer quite like a breeze at a picnic, a fun bike ride, some crisp sweet watermelon and the sun washing over your face while you catch the smell of a fresh cut lawn. Summer is a magical time!

I’m honored to be joining Milwaukee PBS as its first woman General Manager and excited to be exploring my new hometown, thank you for your warm welcome. I hope to meet you soon - in the meantime, drop me a note to let me know what you love about Milwaukee PBS. How has it made a difference in your life? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

My work and passion for public media spans more than twenty something years. Recently, I attended the PBS annual meeting where people gather from across the country to see what’s coming up this year. A few highlights include a program on the origins of gospel music by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, a show on Funk music, everyone was moving during those previews! A new season of GREAT AMERICAN RECIPES (yum), a renewed emphasis on environmental documentaries with THE HUMAN FOOTPRINT, SPY IN THE OCEAN series (fascinating animal look-alike robots), NATIVE AMERICA SEASON 2, SOUTHERN STORYTELLERS, AMERICAN BUFFALO BY KEN BURNS and a lot more!

Sixty-five years ago the Frisbee and Sputnik were launched along with Milwaukee PBS.

MASTERPIECE: GRANTCHESTER SEASON 8

Grantchester returns with Will happily married to Bonnie, and Geordie and Cathy content in their rebuilt relationship. But an accident and shocking announcements threaten the stability and happiness found by Grantchester’s vicar and police detective duo. Exploring faith, forgiveness, and redemption, this explosive season of Grantchester tests Will and Geordie to the limit.

Beginning 7/9 at 8 PM 10.1

New Exhibit at MATC’s Create Gallery

Incelebration of our 65th Anniversary, Milwaukee PBS has opened a very special exhibit in MATC’s Create Gallery at the Downtown campus. The exhibit, MILWAUKEE PBS AT 65: LOOKING BACK & MOVING FORWARD, is a chance to remember how Milwaukee PBS has evolved over its 65-year history and to celebrate the future. Attendees will have the chance to look at historic memorabilia as well as watch some clips of its incredible production accomplishments including THE GREAT CIRCUS PARADE,THE MAKING OF MILWAUKEE, and THE GREAT TV AUCTION. It also celebrates how Milwaukee PBS continues to serve the community with thought-provoking local programs like 10THIRTYSIX™,

ADELANTE, BLACK NOUVEAU, THE ARTS PAGE, MY WISCONSIN BACKYARD, and RHYTHM CAFE MKE, all currently in production.

The exhibit is free to anyone in the community who is interested in visiting. It is located at MATC’s Create Gallery, at the downtown campus in the M building, in room M175. Exhibit hours are 10 AM to 4 PM weekdays.

MILWAUKEE PBS AT 65: LOOKING BACK & MOVING FORWARD runs from June 5 through September 1. Watch for special evening hours coming this summer during Gallery Night MKE July 21. For more information and to learn more about the 65th anniversary celebrations visit milwaukeepbs.org/65.

On the LOCAL SCENE

ON TV

10THIRTYSIX™ One of the biggest shows on PBS is ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL, the story of a country veterinarian in Yorkshire. Did you know that we have country vets right here in Wisconsin? In this encore presentation, find out what it takes to be a large animal doctor.

Over the years, you’ve seen ground-breaking documentaries, perspectives from local artists, historically important stories, a variety of music and so much more. This year FRONTLINE celebrates 40 years of compelling, thought provoking documentaries – to date, almost 800! GRANTCHESTER and DOC MARTIN are back and the CAPITOL 4TH CONCERT is in its 43rd year.

Milwaukee PBS provides an essential connection to understanding each other and the world we live in. Your ongoing support keeps this important work strong. Thank you!

ADELANTE On this month’s episode, Adelante highlights three stories that won regional Emmy awards. You’ll meet Pulitzer Prize winning author Luis Alberto Urrea, go behind the Alzheimer’s epidemic and have a front row seat to Voces de La Frontera’s A Day Without Latinos March.

BLACK NOUVEAU This episode offers a screening of the 11-minute film, BLACK STRINGS, which profiles the Black Strings Triage Ensemble, an all-African American string orchestra in Milwaukee that performs at crime scenes in the immediate aftermath of incidents of gun violence, altering the notion of first responders. Host Earl Arms sits down with Marquise Mays, the filmmaker, and Dayvin Hallmon, the founder and leader of the Black Strings Triage Ensemble.

THE ARTS PAGE In this episode we’ll meet a Wisconsin farmer who’s also a master glass artist. See how he combines the two in his artwork.

ON DIGITAL

MY WISCONSIN BACKYARD Summer is in full swing and people are heading outdoors for all kinds of adventures. Check in for some great ideas on what you can do. Watch for new episodes dropping Fridays at milwaukeepbs.org.

HUMAN FOOTPRINT

RIDLEY

Beginning 7/18 at 7 PM 10.1

5PM M-F Amanpour and Company

A new six-part documentary series, hosted by biologist and Princeton University professor Shane Campbell-Staton, embarks on a journey to understand all the ways humans have transformed the planet. Part science series and part travel show, HUMAN FOOTPRINT reveals the complicated, conflicted, and remarkable species that is Homo sapiens. As our power to reshape the planet grows, will our understanding of the world we inhabit ever catch up?

Saturdays at 3 PM, beginning 7/8, 36.1

Retired Detective Inspector Alex Ridley is called back to advise on a complex and compelling murder case by his replacement and former protégé DI Carol Farman. Carol is keen to access Ridley’s unique insight into crime-solving which served them so well in the past, but the investigation takes a dark and unexpected twist. Courtesy of Ridley Productions Ltd.
