Bohdan Zachary I

hope you’re enjoying summer as much as I am. The warm, sunny weather, combined with finally emerging from the pandemic, is giving this summer a particularly festive feel. And in just a few days we’re happy to help you celebrate with the annual PBS Independence Day special—A CAPITOL FOURTH. The fireworks this year will shine a little brighter for all of us. Although I’m sure we’re all spending as much time as possible outside, you’ll still want to be sure to catch some new shows on Milwaukee PBS I know you’re going to love. The premiere of the English language version of PROFESSOR T, starring Ben Miller, is one of them. If you enjoyed the original version of this gripping drama, this will be a must-see for you—and the entire first season will be available to stream on Milwaukee PBS Passport on July 11, when the first episode premieres on the air. THE LATINO EXPERIENCE is another series I’m excited for you to see. This three-part collection of nonfiction and fiction short films explores the broad experiences, perspectives and points of view of the Latino community. I know you’ll be captivated by the energetic and diverse works these filmmakers have created.

UNFORGOTTEN SEASON 4: EPISODE ONE ON MASTERPIECE Parts of a body are found. The team believes the remains have been stored for a long time. After deciding to retire, Cassie learns she must complete 30 years of service to receive her pension. Beginning 7/11 at 8p.m. 10HD

And as a continuing way to say “thank you” for your support of Milwaukee PBS, I hope you’ll enjoy INSIDE STORY, the brand new member newsletter we’re debuting this summer. It will not only bring you additional information about that local and national shows you love to watch, it will shine a spotlight on individuals and organizations that are investing in public television in our community by supporting Milwaukee PBS. Look for the first issue in your mailbox or email soon! As we come together to celebrate our nation’s 245th birthday, I want to take a moment to celebrate you and all you do to keep Milwaukee PBS strong through your ongoing support. Thank you. Sincerely, Vice President & General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

My Wisconsin Backyard Celebrates the Great Outdoors Summertime in Wisconsin means getting outside and MY WISCONSIN BACKYARD highlights exactly that— all year round! Milwaukee PBS’s digital-first series grew out of the pandemic and the need to work from home. “We felt compelled to start a regular series that would provide a sense of happiness and encouragement,” said producer/ editor Traci Neuman. “We wanted to highlight the importance of getting outside and explain how it benefits both your mental and physical health.” The series tells the inspiring stories of local people enjoying sustainable living and healthy lifestyles in Wisconsin. Producer/photographer Brian Ewig said, “We wanted to offer viewers opportunities to explore educational and inspirational segments featuring what makes

this state great.” Segments have showcased a backyard animal rescue; shipwrecks, swimming and sailing in Lake Michigan; snow sledding, skiing and ice sculpting; raising backyard chickens, a nature artist and gardeners, just to name a few. The segments are short and easy to view at milwaukeepbs.org. On July 1 at 7:30 PM on Milwaukee PBS 10.1, viewers can see a special selection of segments put together for broadcast. On this special broadcast episode, viewers will hear from longboarders who bring their Labradors along for the ride, meet a father and son who ride pennyfarthing bikes, and get advice for gardening almost anywhere. Step outside all year round with MY WISCONSIN BACKYARD!

Local 5 Grader Interviews PBS KIDS Developers

H

ave you ever wondered how PBS KIDS got started or how new shows are developed? Landon Thomson, a 5th grader at Racine’s Jefferson Lighthouse School did and decided to make it a school project. Jefferson Lighthouse is an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme and at the end of the elementary experience, 5th graders take part in a special exhibition. Students explore, document and share their understanding of an issue or opportunity of personal significance. This year’s theme was “How We Express Ourselves.” Landon, who has autism, loves PBS KIDS and wanted to find out more about the shows he watches

and, with a little help, set out to interview the PBS KIDS show developers. Jefferson Lighthouse Associate Principal and IB Coordinator Colleen Strain, reached out to Milwaukee PBS to arrange the interview and we were able to connect her with our PBS KIDS contacts. In a virtual interview with PBS KIDS developers, Landon was able to learn more about his favorite subject—PBS KIDS. He interviewed Natalie Engel, director of content for children’s programming, and Anne Lund, senior director of curriculum and content for children’s programming at PBS KIDS.

Watch PBS KIDS On Milwaukee PBS 10.1 weekdays and Milwaukee PBS KIDS 10.3, 24 hours a day, seven days a week

Natalie told Landon that PBS KIDS began in the 1990s, through a series of phases until children’s programming evolved into PBS KIDS. When asked what makes PBS KIDS special, Anne told Landon, “What we really want to do is think about what kids like you want to know about the world and then come up with show ideas.” Both Natalie and Anne told Landon their favorite parts of their jobs are helping kids all across the country learn and thinking about what important stories they can incorporate into future programs. When Landon asked how he could help others learn about PBS KIDS, Natalie and Anne had a few suggestions. Kids can visit pbskids. org to find games, apps and other fun activities, and their parents can also find helpful information there. Educators and caregivers can find lesson plans and learning assets at pbslearningmedia.org. And of course, children can watch great PBS KIDS programs on television, streaming and on their devices.
