If you’re in the mood for something thought-provoking, INDEPENDENT LENS: MINTED offers a fascinating look at the rise of NFTs (non-fungible tokens). It guides you through the big questions — from their impact on artists to the environmental concerns and the uncertain future of digital art — in a way that’s both engaging and easy to follow.

Another film, INDEPENDENT LENS: WITHOUT ARROWS follows Delwin Fiddler Jr., a champion grass dancer who reconnects with his Indigenous roots by returning to his ancestral home on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota. MIDSOMER MURDERS SEASON 24 Back in the fictional picturesque English county of Midsomer, Season 24 of MIDSOMER MURDERS finds DCI Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and his trusty sidekick, DS Winter (Nick Hendrix), attempting to solve perplexing crimes while also exploring the quirks of this delightful yet deadly county. As always, the duo is joined by the inimitable pathologist Dr. Fleur Perkins, Barnaby’s wife Sarah, their daughter Betty and lovable dog Paddy.

Masterpiece Confirms Two More Seasons of Beloved Series All Creatures Great and Small

he treasured series ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL will return with a double commission announced for seasons 7 and 8, each to be comprised of six episodes plus Christmas Specials.

Season 6 of ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL premieres January 11, on MASTERPIECE PBS and brings audiences back to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales for more heartwarming human and animal tales. The series jumps forward in time to 1945. The intervening years have seen our cherished Skeldale gang somewhat scattered with James and Helen now living at Heston Grange farm, Tristan serving overseas, Mrs. Hall away and Siegfried struggling to cope on his own at Skeldale, but they gladly reunite as the war in Europe comes to a close and look forward to a peaceful future. The series brings

its usual soothing warmth, humor and sense of community alongside a host of animals great and small.

Boredom Isn’t a Bad Thing for Kids

B

oredom gets a bad rap. Kids whine about it, grownups dread it, entire industries aim to eliminate it.

It might come as a surprise, then, to hear that being bored sometimes is good for kids. Before you sign your child up for a class or hand over your game-loaded cell phone, consider the benefits of boredom.

Being present. Boredom can help kids be present and aware of the world around them. One of the delightful things about young children is their curiosity and fascination with the things we adults take for granted: the colors of a moth on the window, the noises of a recycling truck, the way old snow crunches under your feet. Making those discoveries is how children learn.

Taking brain breaks. We are all so busy trying to do everything at once that it’s no surprise stress and anxiety are on the rise, and not just among grownups. Kids’ brains need stimulation, but they need downtime, too. Fortunately, many schools and families are involving kids in mindfulness activities, which can help children and adults quiet their minds and feel calm.

But there’s also something to be said for good, oldfashioned staring off into space. There is some evidence that daydreaming is associated with better cognitive skills and the ability “to think beyond our immediate surroundings.”

Fostering independence. Some experts worry that stuffing our children’s schedules full of activities or leaving them to their (electronic) devices is spurring a crisis of dependence, a trend of young people not being able to manage their time or take responsibility for themselves. Unstructured play helps them develop a different set of important skills and relationships.

Creating unstructured time means introducing the possibility of boredom, but also the chance to work – Suzanne Bouffard through it.

I

am Amy Krzykowski, a mother of six and grandmother of 14 living in Cedarburg, WI. I am a retired English teacher and high school library media specialist. I moved to Milwaukee with my late husband in 1973, and have been an avid fan of Milwaukee PBS ever since.

When I was a stay-at-home mom, I enjoyed watching SESAME STREET, MR. ROGERS, and THE ELECTRIC COMPANY with my kids, and sharpened my sewing skills with Nancy Zieman on SEWING WITH NANCY. Long-time favorite shows like MASTERPIECE THEATER, GREAT PERFORMANCES, AMERICAN MASTERS, and CRAFT IN AMERICA remain favorites to this day. I also love THE HUMAN FOOTPRINT, AMERICA OUTDOORS, and of course all of the Ken Burns Collection.

I could go on! PBS really has been my go-to network for a long time. I happily donate, not only to receive a great resource like PBS Passport, but because I really appreciate the quality news coverage and entertainment I find daily on Milwaukee PBS.
