Letter from

Bohdan Zachary Finally, there are signs of hope as we enter the new

year. As this issue of Fine Tuning arrives at your home, several FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines will soon be distributed across the country. Despite the promise of the new vaccines, there is skepticism and apprehension among some. A significant number of Americans have said they will not get the vaccine once it’s available or they’d prefer to wait until there is further evidence of the efficacy of the treatments. Milwaukee PBS will focus on the question of vaccines, efficacy, ethics and distribution across southeastern Wisconsin in the first of a series of ongoing specials in 2021. The first will be an hour-long live broadcast on Thursday, February 4 at 7:00pm. The program will air on Channel 36 and will be hosted by 10THIRTYSIX’s Portia Young, BLACK NOUVEAU’s Earl Arms, and ADELANTE’s Patricia Gomez. Simultaneous to the live broadcast, we’ll stream the hour-long special online, where viewers will be able to post questions to our hosts and invited medical and political experts. To start the new year on a high note, MASTERPIECE kicks off its 50th anniversary season, featuring the premiere of the highly anticipated ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL on January 10. This new adaptation of the classic literary series is sure to provide a bit of warmth to those

cold winter evenings. And the MASTERPIECE celebration continues this month with the premieres of ELIZABETH IS MISSING (January 3), starring the incomparable Glenda Jackson, the period drama THE LONG SONG (January 31) and a new period mystery, MISS SCARLET & THE DUKE (January 17). Be sure to mark your calendars. This month also marks the 48th season premiere of NOVA on January 13 with “Secrets in Our DNA.” Looking ahead to Black History Month in February, there are some great shows coming your way, including a new mini-series from Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., THE BLACK CHURCH: THIS IS OUR STORY, THIS IS OUR SONG. More information on that and other Black History Month programming—including an important new local special in the coming weeks. Thank you for your ongoing support of Milwaukee PBS. 2020 was quite a year. Best wishes from the Milwaukee PBS family to yours for a bright new year filled with possibilities! Sincerely,

Vice President & General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

MPS’ Countdown to Kindergarten with Other Community Partners Since November 2018, a group of community partners who serve our youngest citizens has been diligently working to support families as their children get ready to go to kindergarten. This year, this group is piloting a program to encourage families to work with their children to support their development during the first five years of life, even though COVID-19 has curtailed many plans. The initiative is called the 1,825 Initiative, which equals the number of days of life a child has during their first five years. In the first five years of life, 95% of a child’s brain is developed; this timeframe is the focus of the initiative. “As a community, we must answer the question of how we are positively influencing those first five years for every child in the city,” said Superintendent Dr. Keith Posley when the initiative started. “A child does not create the conditions and opportunities that he or she is born into – as a community, we do, and we can change those conditions. Building a strong foundation sets the stage for ambitious instruction.” First steps this year included a partner presence at the MPS enrollment fair in February. MPS has held this fair for many years, but this year, community organizations who serve young children

were invited to take part, to share their many resources with the attending families. In October, about 500 children enrolled in MPS’ kindergarten classes received a bag with curated items from a number of organizations, including Milwaukee PBS, that are intended to help build awareness of the many resources available to families in our area. Other organizations partnering with the initiative include the City of Milwaukee, MATC, Betty Brinn Children’s Museum, Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, Milwaukee Public Library, Medical College of Wisconsin, Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful, Skai Academy for the Performing Arts, United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County, University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, and Wisconsin Reading Corps. Countdown to Kindergarten is based on a program that is run in Boston and has included support from the Boston PBS station, GBH. Milwaukee PBS is positioned well to provide equitable support to the community, offering many free resources for parents, educators and caregivers, as well as a vast offering of early childhood programs designed specifically for preschoolers and those in the early elementary grades. Those programs cover a wide range of learning, including social emotional, problem solving, critical thinking, communication skills and physical skills, and are available to anyone who owns a television.
