AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: RUTHLESS: MONOPOLY'S SECRET HISTORY

For generations, Monopoly has been America’s favorite board game, a love letter to unbridled capitalism and — for better or worse — the impulses that make our free-market society tick. But behind the myth of the game’s creation is an untold tale of theft, obsession and corporate double-dealing. Part detective story, part sharp social commentary and part pop-culture celebration, Ruthless: Monopoly’s Secret History presents the fascinating true story of the game and those who created it. Directed by Stephen Ives.

Welcome from Dan Mueller

Long before any conglomerate realized it was time to wake up, hip hop had been speaking out and telling truths. Working with PBS and BBC is an opportunity to deliver these messages through new ways and help explain hip hop’s place in history and hopefully inspire us all to take it further.” – American Rapper Chuck D

ThisFebruary, as we honor National Black History Month, we are inviting you to see the hip hop art form through a whole new lens in our compelling documentary FIGHT THE POWER: HOW HIP HOP CHANGED THE WORLD. The series tells the story of hip hop as an organic expression of experience that was unapologetic, fierce and empowering as it spoke truth to power and informed a nation through a different lens. The documentary features interviews with Chuck D, Grandmaster Caz, Ice-T, will.i.am and Run DMC among others. The hip hop community chose to work with PBS and the BBC to produce this docuseries because, as music industry veteran Lorrie Boula says, we are “unparalleled at creating great documentaries.” It is unflinching and terrific and I encourage you to watch it.

In keeping with a theme of moving beyond the familiar to learn more, I invite you to join me and friends from Milwaukee PBS on our 2023 television focused tour of England. Exclusive to Milwaukee PBS viewers, our All Creatures Tour will take us on an exciting adventure in England designed for fans of PBS favorites like CALL THE MIDWIFE, GRANTCHESTER, and ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL. We’ll walk through tranquil villages, visit some of the finest stately homes and go behind the scenes to explore the locations of some of your favorite PBS programs. See the landscape and towns that form the backdrop and sometimes the very soul of your favorite PBS shows. Tour dates are June 26 through July 2. For more information, visit milwaukeepbs.org/events.

FIGHT THE POWER: HOW HIP HOP CHANGED THE WORLD

Premieres January 31 on Milwaukee PBS

New Four-Part Series With Rap Icon Chuck D Explores Four Decades of Hip Hop History Featuring Interviews with Legendary Artists Ice-T, Fat Joe, Run DMC and MC Lyte and More

Developed by Chuck D and his producing partner, Lorrie Boula, the series tells the story of hip hop as an organic expression of experience that was unapologetic, fierce and empowering as it spoke truth to power and informed a nation through a different lens. Featuring firsthand accounts from some of rap’s most integral players, FIGHT THE POWER: HOW HIP HOP CHANGED THE WORLD recounts the origins of this bold and revolutionary art form through the voices of those who were there at the beginning, creating an anthology of how hip hop became a cultural phenomenon against the backdrop of American history. Weaving together interconnected moments via intimate interviews and archival footage, the docuseries will explore how hip hop quickly created a provocative narrative of America. “The hip hop community has, from the start, been doing what the rest of media is only now catching up to,” said Chuck D. “Long before any conglomerate realized it was time to wake up, hip hop had been speaking out and telling truths. Working with PBS and BBC is an opportunity to deliver these messages through new ways and help explain hip hop’s place in history and hopefully inspire us all to take it further.”

“We brought the project to PBS and BBC Music because they are unparalleled at creating great documentaries. Chuck D and I look forward to working with them to take this account of such an important movement to the world,”

said Lorrie Boula. “People are finally open to hearing and learning about the history of all Americans, and we want to deliver authentic, compelling and truthful stories to them.”

“PBS is excited to join with Chuck D, Lorrie Boula and BBC Music to bring this illuminating project to audiences across our platforms,”

said Bill Gardner, Vice President of Multiplatform Programming and Head of Development for PBS. “Hip hop is one of the most influential artistic genres and cultural movements of our time, and we’re thrilled to tell a deep and unflinching story with one of its originators and most powerful voices.”

The series features insightful interviews with hip hop luminaries including, Chuck D, Grandmaster Caz, Ice-T, Abiodun Oyewole (The Last Poets), Roxanne Shanté, Run DMC, John Forté, will.i.am, MC Lyte, B-Real (Cypress Hill), Melle Mel, Fat Joe, Lupe Fiasco and more.
