AMERICAN MASTERS — Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool

Letter from

Bohdan Zachary Just when we imagined winter might go easy on our region, the brutal reality of snow, ice and cold weather has re-emerged. That’s why I’d like to make you aware of Milwaukee PBS’ dedicated weather channel. The 24/7 channel offers up-to-date weather conditions for southeast Wisconsin, along with traffic cameras from various locations providing a look at road conditions. If you haven’t yet watched this channel, over-the-air viewers (using antennas) will find it at 36.3; if you subscribe to Spectrum, it’s channel 980.

A year ago, Milwaukee PBS partnered with the USA TodayWisconsin and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on what became a breakout documentary, KID IN CRISIS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE. The film, about teens and mental health challenges (based on reporter Rory Linanne’s four-year-long print series), is having enormous impact on communities across the country. Additional community outreach efforts have provided even more help to many youth, families and caregivers—it’s the kind of project we are enormously proud of producing.

We’re excited new episodes of AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN™ return Thursday, February 6. Season nine of the Milwaukee PBS production promises to be as engaging and entertaining as always, with favorites John McGivern, John Gurda and Mike McGivern providing a lot of fun and information. Continuing Milwaukee PBS’ focus on the communities it serves are its other awardwinning local Thursday night productions: ADELANTE! (hosted by Patricia Gomez); THE ARTS PAGE (hosted by Sandy Maxx); BLACK NOUVEAU (hosted by Joanne Williams); and 10THIRTYSIX™ (hosted by Portia Young).

We’ve embarked on a new collaboration with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. DAIRYLAND IN DISTRESS will be based on the outstanding reporting our partners have been doing about Wisconsin’s $45 billion dairy industry. Various issues now threaten this mainstay of our state’s economy. Milwaukee PBS and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel are greatly honored to have been selected as one of five projects for a local initiative launched by WGBH’s formidable FRONTLINE producers. It’s also an acknowledgment of the kind of the strong work created by Milwaukee PBS and its editorial partners at the Journal Sentinel. I look forward to keeping you apprised of progress on this new project.

We know it’s not always possible to see our local programs on their premiere broadcast night. That’s why we make it easy for you to view Milwaukee PBS’ local shows, along with PBS national shows, on Milwaukee PBS Passport. You’ll be able to watch favorite shows you might have missed when it’s convenient for you using this member benefit. Find out more by going to milwaukeepbs.org/passport.

Bringing these complex stories to life not only takes time, it takes real financial investment, which your generous contributions help make possible. Thank you so much for your ongoing support. Sincerely,

General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

On the Local Scene 10THIRTYSIX™ explores shipwrecks in Lake Michigan. Dive into the depths of the lake and hear detailed interviews from historians, researchers and a survivor. Find out more about Wisconsin's maritime history and how it relates to the future. (See related article on page 24) Airs Thursday, February 20 at 7:30p.m. on Channel 10. ADELANTE! listens in as a panel of leaders MATC convened discuss the challenges of Milwaukee's Latino community. This discussion was facilitated as part of MATC’s Hispanic serving initiative task force. And the Medical College of Wisconsin's Ana Manriquez Prado talks about new research on women survivors of cancer. Airs Thursday, February 13 at 7:30p.m. on Channel 10. AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN™ begins its 9th season. This season's fun-filled programs continue to travel Wisconsin looking for interesting communities, telling us how they live, work and play. This month, John and the crew visit Milwaukee’s Story Hill neighborhood, Menasha, Marinette and New Berlin. You won’t want to miss a minute! (See full article on page 8) Airs Thursdays at 7:00p.m. on Channel 10. THE ARTS PAGE explores creative perspectives. We visit the Museum of Wisconsin Art for the 2020 Wisconsin Artists Biennial and meet Mark Klassen, the best of show winner for the 2018 exhibition. Plus, listen to next-generation sounds of electric violins. Discover the positive portrayal of Native Americans through comic books, and see the world through astronaut Scott Kelly's camera lens. Airs Thursday, February 27 at 7:30p.m. on Channel 10. BLACK NOUVEAU presents a Black History Month special. We revisit the 1969 Black Student Strike at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The play highlights Grafton, Wisconsin’s connection to Paramount Records. This episode also features an "Unlearning Racism Class," and previews Black History programming on Milwaukee PBS during the month. Airs Thursday, February 6 at 7:30p.m. on Channel 10. OUTDOOR WISCONSIN visits Horwitz-DeRemer Planetarium in Waukesha. AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN™

Chances are you’ve been in the Milwaukee neighborhood of Story Hill, even if you didn’t realize it. Have you ever been to the Wisconsin Humane Society on Wisconsin Avenue? Ever parked in the north lot of Miller Park or been to Calvary Cemetery? Maybe you’ve stopped for drink at Dug Out 54, or eaten at Story Hill BKC, or taken a picture of that awesome sculpture that kind of looks like a fancy tree. Yep, you’ve been there! 2/6, 7p.m. 10HD

INDEPENDENT LENS: COOKED: SURVIVAL BY ZIP CODE

Learn the story of a heat wave that overtook Chicago in July 1995, killing 739 residents, most of them poor, elderly and African American. The heat wave revealed a long-term crisis of poverty, racism, and economic and social isolation in the city. 2/10, 10p.m. 10HD

In the upcoming ninth season of AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN™, we have two episodes all about "Then and Now." Our episode which will air on March 5th is called “Milwaukee: Then and Now,” and it’s exactly what you think it is. The last episode of this season is called "John McGivern’s Christmas Traditions," and it is also about then and now. We get an inside peek at traditions that John has honored since he was a kid to more recently incorporated traditions that he enjoys now. If you really think about it, like John McGivern does, you’ll realize that every episode we’ve ever created is about "Then and Now," in a specific place. And that’s not an accident. If you’ve ever seen John’s self-produced stage shows, you know that he is a nostalgic sort, and he remembers everything! So when John and his team started this show, John said he wanted to reminisce about how things used to be with the people who remember and find out what makes a community a great place to live, work and play now. It was an easy choice to ask historian John Gurda to share a community’s history at the top of each episode. Hearing about a community’s “then” is the perfect way to set the stage – for you, the viewer, and for John McGivern. John Gurda provides information that helps us understand why a community looks like it does, or why its people work where they do, or why the best food in town is of a certain ethnicity. Then, when John McGivern talks with current residents, business owners and community icons about the community now, we all understand the people a little better for knowing their past. It’s a perfect formula for John’s nostalgic, curious personality. If you want to hear how this show has evolved from then (nine years ago) to now, try to make it to one of our free, local preview parties. John McGivern, John Gurda, Mike McGivern and executive producer Lois Maurer all show up and talk about making this show that they loved then, and still love now.

AMERICAN MASTERS Presents Stanley Nelson’s Grammy-nominated Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool February 25 on PBS in Honor of Black History Month AMERICAN MASTERS presents the broadcast premiere of award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson’s deep dive into the world of a beloved musical giant. American Masters — Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, which earned a Grammy nomination in the “Best Music Film” category, premieres on Milwaukee PBS Tuesday, February 25 at 8p.m. on Channel 10, A visionary known for his restless aesthetic, Davis is widely regarded as one of the most innovative, influential and respected figures in music. With full access to the Miles Davis Estate, the film features never-before-seen footage, including studio outtakes from his recording sessions, rare photos and new interviews. Quincy Jones, Carlos Santana, Clive Davis, Wayne Shorter, Davis’s son Erin Davis and nephew Vince Wilburn, bassist and Davis collaborator Marcus Miller, and Ron Carter are just a few of the luminaries weighing in on the life and career of the cultural icon.

triumphs, the meanderings of his complicated personal life are told with intimate reflections from those closest to him. Previously unseen footage and a soundtrack full of Davis’s music are complemented by new interviews with friends, fellow musicians, collaborators and scholars to create a full portrait of the complex man. The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and had a successful limited theatrical run, tells the story of a truly singular talent and unpacks the man behind the horn.

AMERICAN MASTERS — Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool takes a hard look at the mythology that surrounds the legend. “The story of Miles Davis — who he was as a man and artist — has often been told as the tale of a drug-addled genius,” said Nelson. “You rarely see a portrait of a man that worked hard at honing his craft, a man who deeply studied all forms of music, from Baroque to classical Indian. An elegant man who could render ballads with such tenderness yet hold rage in his heart from the racism he faced throughout his life. He could be romantic and pursue women relentlessly, yet treat them with cruelty upon winning them over. He could be extremely generous, yet rescind that generosity on a whim.” The documentary delves into the six-decade career of the musical genius: from his days as a Juilliard student to the development of his signature sound on recordings with his famous quintet, from his collaborations with Gil Evans to his shifts to new musical paradigms in the 70s and 80s. As the film tracks Davis’s boundary-breaking musical

July 27th - August 2nd, 2020 Visit many of the sights you know so well from public television and iconic British programs seen on Milwaukee PBS. Stops include Cricket St. Thomas (To the Manor Born), Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey©), the Devon estate of Agatha Christie, the seaside village of Port Isaac (Doc Martin), Cornwall– the backdrop of Poldark and sights in London including Hampton Court Palace, taking us back to the days of Henry VIII. You can learn more about the trip or secure your spot today by calling (866) 654-7508.

Milwaukeeans drive along Lincoln Memorial Drive each day, never realizing that Lake Michigan provides a time capsule of days gone by. This month, 10THIRTYSIX™ takes you down to the depths of the lake to shipwrecks near the shoreline. In the early days, the waterways were used heavily for transportation and as a trade lane for the shipping industry. Inevitably, some of those vessels sank due to a variety of reasons, including weather. This documentary highlights several nearby shipwrecks, including the Prins Willem V wreck that sank in 1954, just outside of the breakwaters near Milwaukee. We'll take you down with divers to see the ships and bring you detailed interviews with historians, researchers and a survivor. Because the water is fresh and cold, the Great Lakes offer some of the best preserved shipwrecks. Learn more about them and what is being done to protect these sunken vessels. Watch this special edition of 10THIRTYSIX™ on Thursday, February 20 at 7:30 pm on Milwaukee PBS 10.

NOVA “POLAR EXTREMES” A One-Night, Two-Hour Special Hosted by Kirk Johnson

Premieres Wednesday, February 5 on MILWAUKEEE PBS CHANNEL 10 AT 7p.m. The special takes viewers on a dramatic and surprising adventure from pole to pole and back in time—650 million years ago to present day—to uncover the extraordinary story of the Earth’s poles and their changing climates. Of all the fresh water that exists on Earth today, 70% of it is frozen, held in glaciers and ice caps, most of it in the Arctic and Antarctic—but Earth wasn’t always like this. Hidden in the rocks and trapped under the ice are clues that reveal a planet totally different from the one we know today. Following a trail of strange fossils found in all the wrong places—beech trees in Antarctica, alligators in the Arctic—Johnson finds evidence that the Arctic was once covered in a subtropical forest and dinosaurs once lived near the South Pole. A journey to the hot Death Valley desert uncovers rocks that could only get there by glacier, revealing another very different age, when ice sheets extended from pole to pole, turning the entire globe into a giant “snowball” Earth. Featuring stunning footage from some of the most remote locations on the planet, combined with rich, 3D graphics of long-lost landscapes, POLAR EXTREMES immerses viewers in a scientific quest to explore the unexpected secrets of our planet’s polar past. Why the North and South Poles were virtually ice free for much of the last billion years? Which triggers turned a balmy “Hothouse” Earth—home to dinosaurs for more than 150 million years—into a frozen “Icehouse” landscape? What drives the poles to such extremes? And, can the stories of the past reveal what will happen to the poles—and the rest of our planet—in the future? To search for answers, Johnson travels back in time to find out what the Arctic and the Antarctic would have looked like millions of years ago. This epic journey takes him to some of the most remote places on Earth, featuring polar expeditions, white water rafting, helicopters, goldmines, rappelling into glaciers, fossil digs and more. “This is a truly eye-opening trip through time, because the poles not only changed in the past, they’re changing today,” says POLAR EXTREMES executive producer Julia Cort. “What forces were at work then, when the Arctic was a swamp or when Seattle was under three thousand feet of ice? And what’s happening now? POLAR EXTREMES gives us an incredible opportunity to find potential parallels to our present—and future—climate story.”

Johnson and climate scientist Maureen Raymo uncover one possible parallel in a quarry in Virginia, where a backhoe unearths a treasure trove of fossils: clams and scallops that populated a shoreline three million years ago. The shells look amazingly modern—but dramatically out of place, since the quarry is now located 90 miles inland. It turns out that at the time these creatures were alive, there was no ice in the Arctic, causing sea levels to be substantially higher, and pushing the coastline inland. Raymo points out that during that period, carbon dioxide levels—one of the main factors determining global temperature—were about the same as they are today. In the past, long before humans arrived on the scene, greenhouse gasses that warmed the planet came from natural sources. Johnson visits an active volcano in Mammoth Lakes, California to capture the CO2 still seeping from the Earth. Today, much of the carbon emitted to the atmosphere comes from another source: the burning of fossil fuels. Johnson dramatically demonstrates just how much carbon we’re adding to the air with the help of a 1965 Rambler convertible, a bag of charcoal briquettes (representing what Johnson calls “car turds”) and some provocative computer graphics. With the planet now rapidly warming, a trip to the Canadian Rockies with paleoclimatologist Jeremy Shakun is especially striking, as Shakun leads Johnson deep into a cave inside the permafrost. Shaped by our current “Icehouse,” the walls of one small cavern are coated with sparkling, otherworldly ice crystals. But hanging from the walls in a deeper part of the cave are stone stalactites, created hundreds of thousands of years ago by water running through the ground—when the planet was warmer and the ground there was not frozen. Shakun notes that today’s permafrost holds about twice as much carbon as is in our atmosphere. If the permafrost thaws across all the frozen land at the Polar Extremes, a massive release of methane and CO2 will speed up global warming all over the planet—creating an unprecedented threat to humanity. POLAR EXTREMES shows that the Earth’s distant past is directly relevant to our collective future. “Humans are geology, and we are impacting this planet,” says Johnson. “This is the first time that a mammal has actually changed the composition of the Earth’s atmosphere and driven a dramatic change in the Earth’s climate. The question is, are we clever enough and forward-thinking enough to flip that switch back?”

Thanks to our

FOUNDATION PARTNER Milwaukee PBS is happy to welcome The Cordon Family Foundation as our newest foundation partner! They will be a local sponsor of RICK STEVES’ EUROPE on Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. on Channel 10.1. The Cordon Family Foundation was established in 2005 in memory of Connie and Ray Cordon. They particularly had a passion for travel, as well as musical theater and Irish music, to celebrate their Irish heritage. Rick Steves’ advocacy for lifelong learning and exploring the world inspired the Foundation to support his program. The Cordon family was inspired to a tradition of philanthropy by becoming acquainted with the late Ernest Schocke when Connie Cordon and Ernest Schocke’s wife, Florence, were living at the same nursing home. The Cordon Family Foundation is also a proud supporter of musical theater in Door County, Wisconsin.
