ecember has arrived, and the winter season is upon us. December is a time when families gather to celebrate the winter holidays, bake cherished family recipes, attend festive holiday parties, and reflect on the past year.

We at MPTV are happy and thankful for the many underwriters in our community who have helped support our programming, making it possible for viewers to continue to see informative, engaging, and entertaining programs on MPTV. Hydrite Chemical Co. is a consistent production underwriter of our local MPTV special productions. This year these productions include Veterans of the Forgotten War and Soldiers’ Stories, which celebrate, honor, and pay tribute to the Greatest Generation of military veterans, and the Milwaukee Ballet’s Peter Pan which will air on PBS nationally in 2014. In past years, Hydrite has been a production underwriter of MPTV specials, including Field of Honor, LZ Lambeau, and the 9/11 Memorial Concert with the Bel Canto Chorus. This is the time of year to be thankful and to be joyous, to celebrate the past year’s accomplishments and gear up for the new challenges ahead in 2014.

We have a lot to be grateful for at Milwaukee Public Television – starting with you, our loyal membership base of more than 30,000 family and individual members, and a roster of community-minded foundations and companies which underwrite our programs and related services.

And we’ve received much good news the past few months: • We’ve just confirmed the largest bequest in the history of MPTV, from the estate of Amy Tessmer Boening of Shorewood. We’re hoping her generosity will be an inspiration to others who could consider including the station in their estate plans.

• Last month, two of our regular series took top honors in the Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards: ¡ADELANTE! won the award for Outstanding Achievement for Public Affairs/Current Affairs Programming, and AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN McGIVERN won for Outstanding Achievement for Magazine Programming. We’re proud of our staff for their wonderful work, and grateful for the strong support we have for both these series from the community and program underwriters.

• The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association recognized MPTV with the first place award in its Year of the Veterans Initiative for multiple productions we've done in the past year. These include RETURN TO PEARL, FIELD OF HONOR: A SALUTE TO THE GREATEST GENERATION, and segments on BLACK NOUVEAU and I REMEMBER, as well as our involvement with the FACE FOR EVERY NAME project, a call for photos of Wisconsin soldiers who are listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington.

• Our annual holiday community service project, MITTENS & MORE, was the most successful it’s ever been: over 6,000 pairs of new mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves were donated by our viewers, and distributed free of charge by the station, to agencies and schools for families in need. The contributions in 2013 represent an incredible 45% increase over the 2012 total. Thanks to all our donors!

• PBS has confirmed that the MPTV production PETER PAN BY THE MILWAUKEE BALLET will be seen by a national audience when it’s broadcast as part of the PBS national primetime schedule in April 2014.

LIBERA: ANGELS SING CHRISTMAS IN IRELAND –The Acclaimed Boy Choir Performs in the Mother Church of Ireland – December 7th at 7p.m. on Channel 10 HD Catholic Church in Ireland, whose presence in the audience was a meaningful addition to the atmosphere of the concert.

The church and the land, both of which have provided musical inspiration through the centuries, are the perfect performance space for Libera, whose sound has its roots in ancient monastic and Celtic tonalities. Although the choir’s home base is South London, over half the boys of Libera come from Irish families and their feeling for the distinctly Irish sound of new arrangements by Libera’s founder, composer and conductor, Robert Prizeman, is unmistakable.

The concert in Armagh was born of difficult circumstances.

Following the success of the choir’s performance at a papal mass in New York’s Yankee Stadium for Benedict XVI and 65,000 of the Catholic faithful, Libera were scheduled to record a Christmas concert in Holy Cross Cathedral in Boston, under the patronage of Cardinal Sean O’Malley.

Sadly, when the tragic events of the Boston Marathon occurred, it became untenable to proceed. But believing that audiences around the world would appreciate an Irish-based Christmas program in one of the most glorious cathedral churches — indeed the “Mother Church” of Ireland — the concert was re-scheduled and recorded.

With the iconic St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh, Ireland, as the setting, this holiday concert presents the angelic voices of one of the world’s most accomplished and acclaimed boy choirs. Featuring traditional Christmas carols interpreted in the Libera style, and influenced by Irish music and melodies, LIBERA: ANGELS SING CHRISTMAS IN IRELAND is part of special programming premiering on PBS stations this month.

The small Irish string and wind ensemble that accompanies the concert includes some of Ireland’s most accomplished interpreters of the Irish musical tradition. Among them is virtuoso Irish flute player Brian Dunning and violinist Zoe Conway, whose extraordinary talent has taken her from the stages of the National Concert Hall in Dublin to Carnegie Hall to the Kremlin, and to work with Damien Rice, Nick Cave and Lou Reed.

Another Season for DOWNTON ABBEY!

OWNTON ABBEY, the Emmy® and Golden Globe®awardwinning drama hailed by The Hollywood Reporter as “an absolute pleasure to watch,” will return to MASTERPIECE on PBS for a fifth season. “As American audiences ready themselves for the January 5th premiere of Season 4, our devoted Downton fans will rest easy knowing that a fifth season is on the way,” says MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Rebecca Eaton.

Downton Abbey Season 4 recently completed its run in the UK, where it drew 11.8 million average viewers – making it Britain’s highest-rated television drama in 2013. Earlier this year, more than 24 million viewers watched the third season of the series in the U.S., making it the mostwatched drama in PBS history.

Gareth Neame, Executive Producer of Downton Abbey and Managing Director of CarnivalFilms, said, “Audiences have enjoyed their regular Sunday evening visits back to Downton once again this autumn and we are thrilled to produce a new series of the show next year. rederick Layton was among the very first art collectors in America to fund a purposebuilt civic art gallery for the public's use and enjoyment. Second only to the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Layton Art Gallery in Milwaukee, presented a new model for the single-patron art museum in America. Frederick Layton developed a new vision for a more intimate art museum experience. They drew upon their knowledge to create a refined, singlestory, top-lit, urban gallery that would influence the development of the American art museum.

MEET THAY YANG

If you are reading this issue of Fine Tuning, you are already

familiar with the work of Thay Yang. Thay is the Manager of Creative Services at MPTV, and one of his functions is to design the layout of Fine Tuning.

As the creative arts have developed and grown with the increase of the Internet and digital media, Thay has grown with MPTV. In July, Thay was promoted to Manager of the department, but prior to that, he had been the Creative Services Coordinator for over 13 years. Now, Thay oversees on-air graphics, website graphics, Fine Tuning’s layout, print media and set design. “As the creative arts have changed and evolved over the last several years, we have had the opportunity to evolve with it, and my job is to make sure that MPTV is keeping up with the times, visually speaking,” said Thay. “That’s part of what makes this job fun, being able to be creative in new ways and broaden my horizons.”

Prior to joining MPTV in 2000, Thay was the head of the Graphics department at CBS-58. He graduated from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) with a degree in Graphics & Illustration and began at FOX-6 as an intern his junior year, and became a Production Coordinator there after graduation. He joined MPTV shortly after the birth of his daughter, and felt very rewarded seeing what an impact MPTV’s children’s programming had on his daughter’s cognitive growth.

Thay moved to the United States from Laos with his family in 1979, after spending several years in a refugee camp in Thailand. His family moved quite a bit when he was growing up because his father was a reverend. In fact, Thay’s father translated the entire Bible into the Hmong language, an invaluable accomplishment for the Hmong.

Thay lives in Oak Creek with his high school sweetheart, who he married 19 years ago, and their daughter.

Mail Crew is an on-going volunteer opportunity at the downtown office and on special occasions our Brookfield office. Dates are published quarterly and posted on the web site by month. New volunteers are always welcome to join us. We provide coffee, soft drinks, parking and a pleasant environment.

Training is minimal. Arrival and end times are flexible; volunteers usually arrive between 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. and are done between 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. The December dates and times are as follows: Dececember 5 December 10 or 11 Watch for these coming events in 2014: Outdoor Wisconsin Banquet. hummy, PC Noakes and baby Freddy are back in the East End, Sister Bernadette, now known as Shelagh since leaving the convent, is preparing for her wedding and Jenny is facing huge challenges.
