SESAME STREET: 50 YEARS & STILL SUNNY!

Letter from

Bohdan Zachary As 2019 draws to a close, I’ve reflected on a year filled with transformative and exciting developments at Milwaukee PBS. It began with news that Milwaukee PBS was the most watched PBS station in the country, according to February 2019 Nielsen ratings. That humbling recognition means viewers throughout southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois truly enjoy the programming your investment makes possible—thank you for helping make such a positive impact on our community. An example of Milwaukee PBS’ editorial strength this year can be seen in a project co-produced with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and USA Today-Wisconsin. KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE is a riveting documentary featuring four courageous young people talking about their mental health challenges. More than 70 USA Today websites streamed the premiere of the documentary, which quickly led to requests for copies of the program from more than 250 schools, non-profit organizations and churches who want to explore the topic. An online toolkit was also developed with additional resources to help teens and families. That’s the broad and lasting power your support provides Milwaukee PBS. You can watch this award-winning program right now by visiting milwaukeepbs.org/KidsInCrisis.

2

Also this year, Milwaukee PBS embarked on a five-year strategic plan to position the station for success in the rapidly evolving media landscape. No matter how or where you watch Milwaukee PBS—on TVs, tablets, cell

phones or devices yet to come—we will remain focused on reflecting the voices, faces and issues of our community. That has always been Milwaukee PBS’ mission and that will never change. With that in mind, I also wish to thank Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) for its continued dedication to that mission, keeping public television available to more than one million viewers every year. Looking ahead to 2020, Milwaukee PBS will continue producing its six award-winning series: ADELANTE!; BLACK NOUVEAU; THE ARTS PAGE; AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN™; OUTDOOR WISCONSIN; and 10THIRTYSIX™. If you’re a YouTube TV subscriber, you’ll enjoy Channel 10 as part of your lineup. We will also produce news specials during the 2020 election cycle. And there’s one very special project we will announce shortly that will showcase and celebrate one of Milwaukee’s most beloved cultural institutions. More on that next month. On behalf of everyone at Milwaukee PBS, I wish you Happy Holidays and a wonderful New Year! Sincerely,

General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

On the Local Scene 10THIRTYSIX™ visits a Milwaukee family who for three generations has been cooking and serving meals to those in need. Plus, we'll show you how precious Milwaukee history is being restored for a new Little Pink Church as part of St. Rita's rebirth on the city's east side. Meet the new UW Madison band director who just finished his first football season at Camp Randall. And, hear the sounds of the season from Goodwill's Inspiration Choir. Airs Thursday, December 19 at 7:30p.m. on Channel 10. ADELANTE interviews Whitney Salgado about her work as the illustrator for the Milwaukee Film Festival. We visit the Mexican Consulate in Milwaukee as it celebrates the 209th anniversary of the independence of Mexico. MATC President Dr. Vicki Martin was among those attending. MATC and the Mexican Consulate in Milwaukee are working to help MATC serve more Hispanic students at the college. We also talk to Gretchen Acevedo about suicide prevention among Latinos. Airs Thursday, December 12 at 7:30p.m. on Channel 10. AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN™ looks back at some of the unforgettable experiences and favorite moments from it's first 100 episodes. This month, the crew visits the quiet side of Door County, stops in Portage at the Portage House of Clocks and Cascade Mountain, among other interesting locations and makes a trip to Eau Claire, a city infused with music, youthful energy and tons of activity. Airs Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. on Channel 10. THE ARTS PAGE explores art from Milwaukee PBS' local shows. We revisit the historic Pabst Mansion for the Victorian-inspired holiday decorations. Photographer Freddy Hernandez shares his inspirations on ADELANTE. SistaStrings transforms cello and violin music with a soulful sound on BLACK NOUVEAU. OUTDOOR WISCONSIN's host Dan Small takes us inside the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum. Airs Thursday, December 26 at 7:30p.m. on Channel 10. BLACK NOUVEAU looks at the "Leading Men Fellowship," where young men of color are working as assistant teachers at the Next Door Foundation classrooms. Milwaukee County Sheriff Earnell Lucas talks about Milwaukee's reckless driving problem. And we preview this year's edition of Langston Hughes' "Black Nativity” play. Airs Thursday, December 5 at 7:30p.m. on Channel 10. OUTDOOR WISCONSIN joins Gene Hynek and Art Boehme on a hunt for prehistoric artifacts and stone tools at Hixton Silver Mound. Elizabeth Cramer enjoys a holiday concert at Cave of the Mounds. Host Dan Small prepares pheasant in a variety of recipes. Airs Thursdays, at 9:00 p.m. on Channel 10.

SESAME STREET: 50 YEARS & STILL SUNNY! is a lively, entertaining and emotionally engaging new documentary special brimming over with music, laughter, tears, celebrity appearances and locally generated viewer content that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the iconic PBS KIDS children’s series. Sesame Street is produced by Sesame Workshop, a separate, independent, nonprofit educational organization. Hosted by seven-time Grammy Award winner Gloria Estefan, SESAME STREET: 50 YEARS & STILL SUNNY! is part of special programming premiering on Milwaukee PBS this month. Featuring interviews with Jodie Foster, Itzhak Perlman, LL Cool J, filmmaker Ken Burns, PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger and Jeffrey D. Dunn, President and CEO of Sesame Workshop, the program also includes interviews with many of the award-winning writers and puppeteers who brought the beloved characters from the series to life. “PBS is thrilled to present this Sesame Street documentary special,” said Lesli Rotenberg, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, Children’s Media & Education, PBS. “For 50 years, Sesame Street has been imparting invaluable lessons as a shining example of high-quality, educational children’s television. SESAME STREET: 50 YEARS & STILL SUNNY! is a warm and welcome reminder of how the series has touched the lives of viewers of all ages for decades.”

8

Filled with video clips of Sesame Street’s most unforgettable moments, the program explores how

the groundbreaking children’s series captured lightning in a bottle and examines its significant and lasting impact on families across America. The program also features heartfelt testimonials from viewers, captured by PBS member stations, about the influence of Sesame Street on their lives. When it premiered on November 10, 1969, Sesame Street provided educational programming and entertainment unlike any other children’s television show. Initially broadcast on more than 180 public television stations, the program introduced audiences to human characters, often children themselves, who interacted with Jim Henson’s Muppets. Characters like Maria and Gordon, Mr. Hooper, Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Bert and Ernie were soon watched by viewers worldwide. Throughout the years, the award-winning and critically acclaimed series has remained experimental, each year researching what issues are impacting kids and adapting to the various cultural and social trends of the time.

Letters to Santa Greetings from Santa’s Village

The holiday season brings one of Milwaukee PBS’ most beloved annual traditions, Letters to Santa. Recall Christmas past and tune in as little ones read their letters to Santa Claus. Letters to Santa is created and produced by Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) Television & Video Production students. This year, Milwaukee PBS is providing hands-on, real-life experience to the largest class ever, so there are more episodes and tons of creative content. This year’s theme is “Greetings From Santa’s Village,” and each episode introduces a different elf in Santa’s village, including Santa’s personal bodyguard and the Elf Police Force. Also, these students are working closely with students from MATC’s Animation and Graphic Design programs to add fun and special elements for this year’s Letters to Santa. Letters to Santa airs at 2:30 p.m. on Monday-Friday, December 16-20, Monday, December 23 and Tuesday, December 24 on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10.1. 25
