COVER STORY:
POMPEII: THE NEW DIG
Watch Wednesday, August 6th at 9PM CH10.1
From the renowned creators of SECRETS OF THE SAQQARA TOMB and SAVING VENICE, POMPEII: THE NEW DIG follows the most extensive archaeological excavation in Pompeii for a generation. Nearly two years in the making, with exclusive access to the dig and the all-Italian team of archaeologists, the series follows the excavation of an entire city block, unearthing what life was like in Pompeii before the eruption and the horror faced by the victims, and those who survived when Vesuvius erupted in AD 79.
Remarkably, in the excavation, archaeologists uncovered a fresco that looked like a pizza. This artwork, dating back 2,000 years, was discovered in the Regio IX section of Pompeii’s archeological park, near Naples, where pizza originated. It was found on a wall in what seems to have been a hallway of a house, possibly connected to a bakery.
Diana El-Osta, Senior Director, Multiplatform Programming and Development for PBS said, “The recent excavation is unveiling valuable insights into Pompeii, showcasing there’s still much to discover. PBS viewers will get to join in on an intriguing 2,000-year journey, spanning from Pompeii’s ancient homes to the present day, and we can’t wait for them to watch.”
“POMPEII: THE NEW DIG will take us right to the heart of a moment in history that has always fascinated audiences around the world. And by ensuring local experts play a central role, Lion Television is bringing true authenticity to the series, giving viewers a unique opportunity to join the archaeologists as they unearth more thrilling finds and add even more depth to the incredible story of Pompeii and its people.”
Roberta Prisco alongside a fresco depicting what might be an ancestor of pizza.
Archaeologists embark on the biggest dig in a generation at Pompeii, excavating a new city block.

Ways to enjoy reading this summer:
1
Load up on e-books. Visit your local library’s website to access free digital subscription services for kids of all ages. Borrow e-books, e-comics, and e-magazines on your mobile device, tablet, or computer. Some online collections for kids even feature animated, talking picture books for young children developing literacy skills. (Bonus: Digital check-outs expire automatically — no late fees!)
2
Listen to a storytime podcast. Podcasts aren’t just for grown-ups! Grab headphones or connect a speaker to listen to a storytime from anywhere. Podcast episodes are free to stream and download, but some do feature advertisements or commercials. To get started, just search the “Kids & Family” category in your phone’s podcast app.
3
Visit a little free library. Look over the Free Little Library world map to see if there’s a little library in your neighborhood. They’re a great way for kids to find new book titles and pick out their own favorites. Consider donating some books from your home that your child might have grown out of, and give another child the thing that might just teach them how to enjoy reading. If you don’t have a Free Little Library in your neighborhood, why not start one with some titles from your summer reading list for kids?
4
Try an audiobook. Books on tape have gotten an upgrade! If you have a library card, your family already has free access to thousands of popular audiobooks — no in-person visits required. Looking for a more permanent purchase? You can also buy favorite

audiobooks and download them on your devices to listen to again and again!
5
Visit your local library’s website. Libraries may be closed to the public or have limited hours, but that doesn’t mean librarians aren’t hard at work. My local library streams live videos for families including interactive puppet shows, book readings, and book-themed craft classes - take advantage of the free programs they offer.
6
Write and illustrate your own book. Learning how to enjoy reading goes hand in hand with enjoying writing. All you need is paper, some crayons or markers, and a little imagination. Create a fun memory by brainstorming your own book together and then bringing it to life. (Need some inspiration to get started? Make a book about friends with Daniel Tiger!)

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Gail Baccetti
Member Feels Fortunate for Quality Programs
This Month we highlight Gail Baccetti, who has been a member for almost 15 years and is a regular viewer of Milwaukee PBS Passport.
Ihave been retired for 14 years, after working in client management and sales. I have lived full time in Lake Geneva for 15 years, but my husband and I have been coming to Wisconsin from the Chicago area since 1981, and have owned a home here since 1986. Our passions are entertaining and spending time with our friends and family, attending live productions, doing various volunteer work, and reading.
I have been supporting PBS as long as I can remember. I feel fortunate to have access to such quality programming. Our favorites are the GREAT PERFORMANCES shows of Broadway productions, the various BRITISH SERIES, and the NATURE shows. As soon as I receive my Fine Tuning Magazine each month, I sit down, read the articles about upcoming new shows, and circle all the programming that I want to watch that month.
We are all so fortunate to have the premiere viewing options offered by PBS. They are entertaining, educational, timely, and always well produced. They provide a mirror into our local community, as well as the world at large. We have included Milwaukee PBS in our will to help ensure that this treasure is available for generations to come.

Milwaukee PBS Loves the la dolce vita of Italy!
In May, 21 enthusiastic Milwaukee PBS viewers traveled to Italy to experience the sights, food and incredible artisanal culture as displayed in the PBS program ITALY MADE WITH LOVE. Working their way from Rome to Umbria to Tuscany, guests went into private galleries and studios of artists preserving the culture of food, textiles, ceramics, hand-made frames, mosaics, renaissance art techniques, perfume and even made friends with canines trained in the art of truffle hunting!
