Bohdan Zachary As we enter August, the impact of COVID-19 continues to impact everything we do. The Milwaukee PBS staff remains at home for the most part, delivering services remotely via computer and virtual video calls. Producers continue capturing stories on cellphones and editors are getting the stories and specials on air using home laptops. Some members of the Milwaukee PBS engineering team come to our downtown MATC location and broadcast tower at Estabrook Park to maintain the broadcast services viewers have come to expect. I’m enormously proud of the women and men who are committed to providing first-class service during these difficult times. Education has also been upended by the corona virus pandemic and we are keenly aware how Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) has been impacted. We’re accustomed to passing by thousands of MATC students in the corridors of the downtown campus where our station is located. The hallways at Milwaukee

PBS and MATC are eerily quiet. Many MATC students had been looking forward to the final recognition of their academic success, but sadly COVID-19 derailed the college’s spring graduation ceremony. MATC has chosen a new way to honor hundreds of its students: virtual commencement. And Milwaukee PBS has committed to celebrate the accomplishments of MATC’s graduating students by airing the virtual ceremony on August 1 (Channel 10 at 4:30 p.m.) and August 2 (Channel 36 at 3 p.m.) Congratulations! Sincerely,

Vice President & General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

and equitable environment. They are ready to start their career on day one, ready to transfer to a four-year university -- or bothThe value MATC graduates generate in our community will only grow as the college works to help even more students -- especially students of color -- graduate and achieve their dreams. As I shared with you in January, we launched our Academic & Career Pathways this academic year to increase graduation rates and close equity gaps. This nationally-recognized model helped Georgia State University increase graduation rates across the board and eliminate the equity gap in graduation between white students and students of color. Dear Milwaukee PBS Members: I invite you to watch the Spring and Summer Class of 2020 celebrate their virtual commencement on Milwaukee PBS. While we mark graduates’ accomplishments in a different way, what these students have achieved is no less significant. In fact, many have overcome new challenges. Students switched quickly to learning in an online environment, perhaps for the first time in their educational careers. Many persevered after losing a job -- or finding themselves working in an unfamiliar or radically different environment. Our Black students lived through the trauma of witnessing continued acts of racial injustice. Our graduates will be the change our community needs and deserves. They have learned career-ready skills and soft skills in a diverse, inclusive

This fall, we plan to begin a semester that commits to a new student experience in an engaging environment and earning an empowering education. We will be offering a balance of online, blended/hybrid and fully in-person courses with strong safety practices in place during this pandemic. We are offering both traditional length courses and eight-week sections in selected courses that give students the opportunity to start at various points throughout the fall, focus on coursework and see success quickly. Our goal is to see even more students graduate in December, next spring, and every semester moving forward. Thank you for your support of both MATC and Milwaukee PBS as we work together to serve the community we share. Sincerely,

President of Milwaukee Area Technical College

CORPORATE UNDERWRITER

Children in southeastern Wisconsin enjoy engaging, quality children’s programming Monday through Friday on Channel 10.1 because of the vision and commitment of The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation. The Foundation’s generous gift is one of the primary sources of funding for the award-winning educational children’s programming on Milwaukee PBS. Jane Bradley Pettit was committed throughout her lifetime to improving the lives of children from all socio-economic backgrounds. These children’s literacy programs are created specifically to help bridge children’s literacy skills in reading, language development, math and science, and model positive social skills, such as empathy, generosity and courtesy. Two of the newest kids’ literacy programs are Hero Elementary and Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, both for kids 4 to 7. Hero Elementary is

a school for budding superheroes, who use their tools of scientific thinking to solve problems. Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, based on Brad Meltzer’s “Ordinary People Change the World” book series for young readers, introduces kids to real-life historical figures and the qualities that enabled them to dream big and make a difference, modeling positive traits such as perseverance, resilience and courage. Milwaukee PBS is thankful for the generous underwriting support of the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation. JoAnn Culp Youngman, Vice President of the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation shared, “The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation has been a proud sponsor of children’s programming on Milwaukee PBS for more than 25 years. It was true when the first grant was made and remains true today. While the programs are educational and stimulate children’s imagination, Jane Bradley Pettit felt they would also provide a source of comfort and stability over the course of their young lives. The Foundation is pleased to continue this legacy.” Mimi Notestein Director, Foundation Relations
