GREAT WOMEN OF TV VARIETY

Hosted by three-time Grammy Award winner Debby Boone, is a dazzling musical comedy salute to the history-making women of 1960s and '70s TV Variety. The program features classic performances from Carol Burnett, Lily Tomlin, Diahann Carroll, Cher, Mitzi Gaynor, Toni Tennille, Ella Fitzgerald, Ann-Margret, Vikki Carr, Leslie Uggams, and many more. Collectively these trailblazing icons reinvented a TV genre, both in front of and behind the camera, with razzle-dazzle showmanship and a dynamic creative vision that entertained tens of millions.

Welcome from Debbie Hamlett

We appreciate the trust you continue to place in Milwaukee PBS. Confidence in PBS remains strong with 74% of Americans rating the network and member stations like ours FIRSTin public trust for 22 years in a row! In addition, 88% of parents trust PBS as a safe source for children to learn by watching television, playing digital games and mobile apps.

I’m writing this in early March, having just returned from visiting our legislators in Washington, D.C. There’s a robust discussion about ending the federal funding appropriation to public media stations. This appropriation through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting amounts to roughly $1.60 per person. 19% of our annual budget comes from CPB, which would be difficult to replace.

Last fiscal year, Milwaukee PBS broadcast channels reached more than 2 million people, our Facebook page attracted more than 1.5 million while our YouTube Channel had nearly 8 million views. Recently, we noticed our documentary about the devastating fire and rebuilding of the Milwaukee Trinity Lutheran Church has garnered 49,000 views on YouTube – a testament to the power of local stories! Milwaukee PBS is more than television - we connect, inform, and uplift. Our work is community centered, whether it’s showcasing local artists and performances, recounting regional history, providing safe educational events for parents and kids, or the delivery of essential information and alerts to keep you and your loved ones safe - you are our north star.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to support essential programs and services for our community.

On the LOCAL SCENE

Meet Rodrigo Carapia, an artist and muralist with a unique desire of sharing his art with children and young people in schools and juvenile facilities.

Through his art, Rodrigo is helping them discover their own voices, just as he did. To him, art is a change agent, opening doors for those in need and connecting self-expression and personal agency.

Don’t miss this powerful story of redemption, hope, and the transformative power of art as Rodrigo not only continues to transform his own life, but ignites change in the lives of others one brush stroke at a time.

ADELANTE!—where inspiration meets action.

New Local Digital Content

It's satirical and witty, clever and sharp, relatable and wise and it's set against the backdrop of Milwaukee.

COVER STORY:

Out-Of-This-World Documentary

WE WANT THE FUNK! the documentary from Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson, and co-director and producer Nicole London, traces funk music’s African and gospel roots from James Brown to Parliament-Funkadelic and beyond. This program premieres on INDEPENDENT LENS on April 8, at 8PM on Channel 10, and will then be available on PBS app, and PBS YouTube. A syncopated and star-studded voyage through the journey of funk music, the film delves into the genre’s influence on contemporary music, fashion, and freedom of expression as well as its role in the rise of hip-hop.

Distinctly rooted in joy, funk music reflected a post-Civil Rights Movement sensibility.

WE WANT THE FUNK! examines the symbiotic relationship between the explosion of funk music out of the Midwest and the political and racial dynamics in 1970s inner-city America. At the heart of the film are the first-hand stories, recollections, and experiences of the people who created and defined funk: George Clinton of Parliament-Funkadelic; Fred Wesley of The J.B.'s; Robert ‘Kool’ Bell from Kool & The Gang; Marcus Miller; Nona Hendryx of Labelle; Kirk Franklin; David Byrne of the Talking Heads; Prince Paul, DJ and Producer for De La Soul; along with additional perspectives from Questlove and Thomas DeFrantz. The film also features archival interviews with musical icons, including James Brown, Elton John, David Bowie, and more.

WE WANT THE FUNK! explores how the rhythms and grooves of funk music can put us in a trance, reminding us that it’s a joy to be in the world and dance into a frenzy of freedom.

How to Teach Your Child to Be An “Includer”

The question I hear more often than not is not, “How can I raise a kind kid” but “What do I do when my kid is excluded?” It’s heartbreaking to think that your child might be alone and upset at school each day. The best thing parents can do is to empower kids to act as “includers.” When we instill kids with prosocial skills, we spread kindness and compassion. Follow these steps to teach your kids to include others.

1

Listen and empathize. It can be very difficult to sit back and listen when a child tells a story of being excluded, humiliated or otherwise hurt at school, but listening and empathizing are the two best things you can do. While it might be tempting to respond, “What a terrible friend!” what your child actually needs to hear is, “That sounds terrible. You must feel so upset right now.” When we empathize with our kids, we teach them to do the same for others.

2

Be an “includer.” If we want our kids to learn to reach out to others and include new people, we need to do the same. Show your kids how to make

new friends by introducing yourself to new people and striking up conversations with people they don’t know.

3

Look for someone who needs a friend. It’s normal for kids to get caught up in their usual groups. Young children tend to sit at the same table at lunch or play with the same groups at recess. Teach your child to scan the room (or field) to look for someone who might need a friend. Practice ways to invite a new kid into the group or ask others to join a game. When kids practice these skills at home, they are better able to use them out in the world. – Katie Hurley, LCSW

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Philip Blank

Milwaukee PBS Member for 51 Years

He’s been a member of Milwaukee PBS for 51 years although his relationship to the organization goes back to the very beginnings of educational television in southeast Wisconsin.

Phillip Blank, a native of Milwaukee, has witnessed the growth of Milwaukee PBS over the past 68 years and he values public television, in part, because he was witness to forces that nearly prevented its creation. “I have profound respect for Mayor Frank Zeidler,” he said speaking of Milwaukee’s Mayor from 1948 to 1960. “He fought so hard against private business interests to get Milwaukee PBS started.” Mayor Zeidler did fight to secure an educational TV license for southeast Wisconsin during a time when commercial entities and political forces – including those of Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy – made securing the license a challenge that played out in national media. In the end, Mayor Zeidler’s plan to secure educational television for the region won, as did the plan to house it at the Milwaukee Vocational School (now MATC) where Phil Blank was working as a teacher. In October, 1957, WMVS sent out its first signal. “Zeidler promoted and provided for the local welfare,” he said appreciating his leadership on educational television. Phil knows about leadership. After graduating from Marquette University, he served in the U.S. Airforce. After his honorable discharge, he resumed his pursuit of a master’s degree, while teaching. He received two Fulbright Scholarships and while at MATC, he served as president of the American Federation of Teachers Local 212 when it won collective bargaining rights in 1963. In all, Phil worked at MATC for 35 years and during that time he again witnessed the growth of Milwaukee PBS and supported the station through his membership. Phil appreciates the specials Milwaukee PBS creates “I like all local programs about Milwaukee. I like John Gurda’s programs.” Now 95, Phil admits he is slowing down, “but my cognition is still okay. I’ve had a blessed life.” Milwaukee PBS is all the greater for it.

LIFE AFTER LIBERATION - HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS IN POST-WAR GERMANY

The program tells the stories of Shoah survivors liberated near Landsberg am Lech, in southern Germany, and later housed in the Displaced Persons (DP) camp in the town. The survivors tell of the fate of their families and their attempts to rebuild their lives. The program also highlights the global political focus on the DP camps, Germany's attempt at self-exoneration following the war, and Helga and Manfred Deiler’s work in creating a proper memorial in the town. 4/22, 10PM 10.1
