ith the 46th annual GREAT TV AUCTION on Channel 10 and mptv.org airing from April 25-May 3 – the largest public TV broadcast auction in the country – we thought we’d share a list of things that will increase your enjoyment of it this year! 1. The AUCTION theme is “One Sweet Deal,” and the Chocolate Chisel in Port Washington is creating an exclusive candy bar for us to auction! You can get a preview taste of this scrumptious treat at the GREAT TV AUCTION Art Preview. 2. Speaking of the Art Preview, you may still have a chance to enjoy it if you read this column before March 30! All the art pieces we auction off during the GREAT TV AUCTION may be previewed during the Milwaukee Realtors Home and Garden Expo Show at the Exposition Center at Wisconsin State Fair Park from March 21-23 and 26-30. This year the artwork is outstanding, and the subjects of our featured artworks include wildlife, the Packers, the Milwaukee River, music, and flowers. You’ll be impressed! 3. We’re pleased to bring back our “Neighborhood Boards” on the AUCTION. Milwaukee’s Third Ward, Cedarburg, Wauwatosa, and many others will be represented this year. Bidders love these boards, as do the donors who get to show off the best their communities have to offer on a single table. 4. We have a great sweepstakes grand prize: a weekend trip for two to New York City, including lodging at the four-star Novotel Hotel in the Times Square area, airfare, tickets to a Broadway show, and more, courtesy of Holiday Travel. Additional sweepstakes prizes are from Polk Audio, the Capital Grille, and the Chocolate Chisel. Suggested sweepstakes ticket donations are just $5 each, or 5 for $20. Visit www.greatTVauction.com for all the rules. 5. And, raffle tickets are $25 each, 2 for $40, or 6 for $100, and this year’s winner will get a 2014 Ford F-150 pickup truck or $30,000 in cash! Only 6000, tickets will be sold. Information is available for that, too, at www.greatTVauction.com. 6. The bidding process has been improved: now everyone will be able to make proxy bids! Bidders who choose to place proxies need call only once – there’s no more worry about busy or unanswered lines. You can start as low as $10 (major gifts at $100), and place a proxy bid of the highest amount you are willing to pay. The computer will bid for you against others until you either win, or your top bid is surpassed. Now we’re talking!

7. Facebook fans: please “like” us on our Channel 10 Great TV Auction page! We are posting every day, and as we get close to the AUCTION we will be having special giveaways and displaying interesting items up for bid. Finally, the key thing is to tune in, on Channel 10 or mptv.org, and have a go at it yourself! Everyone who’s ever participated knows the rush when you are the high bidder and you get that special item! And, of course, the moneys raised go to a great cause that you and your family can enjoy year-round: DOWNTON ABBEY, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, SESAME STREET, AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN McGIVERN, NATURE, NOVA, OUTDOOR WISCONSIN, THE PBS NEWSHOUR, GREAT PERFORMANCES, HEALTHY INDIAN FLAVORS WITH ALAMELU, and all the other programming 24-hours a day on Milwaukee Public Television. That’s what makes the GREAT TV AUCTION truly “one sweet deal” for the entire community!

hildren across the country will have the chance to help keep Tinkerbell alive with Milwaukee Ballet's interactive and wildly popular production of “Peter Pan.” This MPTV production will play to a national television audience this spring on PBS affiliate stations throughout the U.S. during prime time programming. On MPTV, “Peter Pan” will air on Friday, April 18, 2014 at 8 p.m. on MPTV 10. Peter Pan really flies. An enormous ticking crocodile creeps in the orchestra pit, stalking Captain Hook. Peter, Tinkerbell and the Darling children soar to Neverland for escapades with illuminating costumes, magical lighting and a lively score. “At MPTV, we have a proud history of working with area arts groups to bring their most intriguing and entertaining works to tens of thousands of television viewers, “ said MPTV General Manager Ellis

Bromberg. “ It’s gratifying to know that folks around the country will now get to see what a jewel we have here in Milwaukee Ballet and its outstanding talent.” Bringing such a magical piece to its viewers was a big responsibility, so MPTV called its old friend nationally-renowned, Emmy-award winning producer/director Phillip Byrd. Byrd worked at MPTV from 1975-1980. Since then, he has gone on to achieve national acclaim and recognition for his work in directing and producing arts performances. Byrd has directed major productions in the U.S. and Europe, including “Angel Voices: Libera in Concert”, “Christmas in Norway with the St. Olaf Choir” and “Wolf Trap Presents the Kirov: Swan Lake” for which he won a national Emmy award. “Peter Pan” features intricate choreography and multiple activities occurring on stage simultaneously, Cover image: Marc Petrocci. but Byrd said, “The complexity of this ballet is part of what drew me to the project. Filming dancers flying makes it more interesting to shoot.” Choreographed by Milwaukee Ballet Artistic Director Michael Pink, Peter Pan took the city by storm when it premiered, playing to sold-out houses and earning nightly standing ovations. It features Leading Artist Marc Petrocci as Peter Pan and rising star Valerie Harmon as Wendy. ““Peter Pan” has become the company’s most successful performance of all time. Both our loyal supporters, as well as young families new to the ballet, were drawn to the magic of “Peter Pan,”” said Pink. “Now, through our partnership with MPTV, we can bring the enchantment of this production to the entire nation on PBS.”

Major funding for the MPTV’s Production of Peter Pan by Milwaukee Ballet is made possible by:

On the

Local Scene This April, Milwaukee Public Television’s locallyproduced programs feature some diverse topics. Around the Corner with John McGivern visits LaCrosse and presents a John Gurda special. ¡Adelante! spends some time at the Sting Ray exhibit at the Milwaukee County Zoo. The Arts Page features MPTV’s production of Milwaukee Ballet and Michael Pink’s “Peter Pan.” 4th Street Forum discusses part two of profiting from sustainability and takes its show on the road to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Black Nouveau continues its series on Black Men in Prison and brings light to the tragic issue of human trafficking in Milwaukee. Outdoor Wisconsin’s 30th season continues with a trip to the tropical dome at Milwaukee’s Mitchell Park Conservatory. InterChange looks at the hot issues in the Milwaukee area. Tune in each week to find out what’s new in Milwaukee and Wisconsin. Visit mptv.org for more details.

n 1960's Britain, an upstanding detective takes on a dangerous world. Awardwinning actor Martin Shaw stars as Commander George Gently - an incorruptible, uncompromising cop transplanted from London's Scotland Yard to England's North Country in the mid1960's. Gently's reputation for honesty and relentlessness makes him almost as feared among his colleagues as he is among criminals. But he finds an odd ally in John Bacchus - an overeager, opinionated young sergeant who plays fast and loose with police procedures.

JERZY POPIELUSZKO: MESSENGER OF THE TRUTH

N

arrated by Martin Sheen, MESSENGER OF THE TRUTH tells the remarkable true story of Catholic priest and human rights activist Father Jerzy Popieluszko , whose faith, conviction and courage mobilized the people of Poland to stand against Communist rule during the 1980s. Members of the Polish internal intelligence agency eventually succeeded in silencing Father Jerzy, assassinating him in 1984. His legacy was further cemented in 2010, when Pope Benedict beatified Father Jerzy — the last step before achieving sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church.

wo words are synonymous with the department store Selfridges: luxury and London. However, Selfridges was the brain child of an American, Mr. Harry Gordon Selfridge, whose life is depicted in the PBS Masterpiece series Mr. Selfridge. KEN BURNS’ NEW FILM

“THE ADDRESS”

TO PREMIERE APRIL 15 ON CHANNEL 10 AT 8 p.m. Documentary Tells Stories of Vermont School Where Boys with Learning Differences Memorize and Recite the Gettysburg Address in Public

a speech that would go on to embolden the Union cause with some of the most stirring words ever spoken. In November 2013, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary and in conjunction with the film, Burns and PBS launched LearnTheAddress.org, an initiative that invites people to upload videos of themselves reciting the Gettysburg Address to the project’s web site. To date, the site has accepted thousands of submissions from people across the country.

T

HE ADDRESS, a new film from award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns, will air April 15, 8:00-9:30 p.m. on Channel 10. The film tells the story of a tiny school in Putney, Vermont, the Greenwood School, where each year the students are encouraged to memorize, practice and recite the Gettysburg Address. In its exploration of the Greenwood School, the film also unlocks the history, context and importance of President Lincoln’s most powerful address.

This fall, PBS will air another new series from Burns, THE ROOSEVELTS: AN INTIMATE HISTORY. The seven-part, 14hour series presents the stories of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, and is the first to weave their individual stories into a single narrative. Funding provided by: Hydrite Chemical Co.

The Greenwood School students, boys ages 11-17, all face a range of complex learning differences that make their personal, academic and social progress challenging. THE ADDRESS reveals how President Lincoln’s historic words motivate and engage these students a century-and-a-half after Lincoln delivered 13

ow did the human body become the complicated, quirky and amazing machine it is today? This cutting-edge scientific adventure reveals a startling truth: hidden within the human body is a story of life on Earth, and the legacy of animals that lived hundreds of millions of years ago. Based on the best-selling book by Neil Shubin, the series travels from Africa to the Arctic Circle to uncover the 3.5 billion year history of the human body — and how a colorful cast of ancient characters made us who we are today.

THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW This show from 1979 opens with "Easter Parade" as pretty girls in gay nineties finery stroll on a flower-bedecked set with their handsome escorts. Guy & Ralna sing "Give Me That Old Time Religion", Sandi, Gail, & Mary Lou "Tiptoe Through The Tulips", and Myron Floren does a thrilling version of "The Lost Chord". Henry Cuesta plays a tender "Love Lifted Me" and the whole cast sings a group of beloved hymns at the close? a truly lovely show. Host: Mary Lou Metzger. 4/19, 7p.m. 10HD Complete Up-to-Date Program Listings and Repeats on mptv.org

THE BLETCHLEY CIRCLE (SEASON 2)

T

HE BLETCHLEY CIRCLE follows Susan, Millie, Lucy and Jean, ordinary women with extraordinary ability to break codes, a skill honed during World War II when they worked undercover at Bletchley Park, site of the United Kingdom's main decryption establishment. Now, in 1952, the four have returned to civilian life, keeping their intelligence work secret from all, including family and friends. A series of ghastly murders targeting women, however, reunites the team as they set out to decode the pattern behind the crimes.

THE ADDRESS

K

en Burns tells the story of a tiny school in Putney, Vermont, the Greenwood School, where each year the students are encouraged to memorize, practice and recite the Gettysburg Address. In its exploration of Greenwood, whose students, boys ages 1117, all face a range of complex learning differences, the film also unlocks the history, context and importance of President Lincoln’s most powerful address.

he third season of CALL THE MIDWIFE, which premiered to a record-breaking audience of 9.6 million viewers in the UK, opens in 1959 as the winds of change are sweeping through the country. Throughout the season, viewers will follow the joys and heartbreak of the midwives as they continue to care for members of the Poplar community and face management changes at Nonnatus House. May 2013, and audiences and critics in the U.S. were equally effusive, with Season 2 breaking the top ten spot in ratings on PBS, scoring 58 percent above the 2012-2013 season-to-date primetime average, and claiming the title of Top Rated Drama on Amazon.com. CALL THE MIDWIFE stars Jessica Raine as Jenny Lee, along with Jenny Agutter (“The Railway Children,” “Spooks”) as Sister Julienne, Pam Ferris (“Little Dorrit,” “Darling Buds of May”) as Sister Evangelina, Miranda Hart (“Miranda”) as Chummy, Judy Parfitt (“Little Dorrit,” Girl With a Pearl Earring), who was nominated for a 2013 Satellite Award for her work as Sister Monica Joan, Helen George (“Hollyoaks,” “Doctors”) as Trixie Franklin, Bryony Hannah (Cemetery Junction) as Cynthia Miller, Laura Main (“Monarch of the Glen”) as Shelagh and Cliff Parisi (“EastEnders”) as Fred. AMERICAN MASTERS: A FIERCE GREEN FIRE

T

his film is an exploration of the environmental movement -- grassroots and global activism spanning 50 years from conservation to climate change. Inspired by the book of the same name by Philip Shabecoff, A FIERCE GREEN FIRE chronicles the largest movement of the 20th century and one of the keys to the 21st. It brings together all the major parts of environmentalism and connects them. It focuses on activism, people fighting to save their homes, their lives, the future -- and succeeding against all odds.

MIDSOMER MURDERS (NEW SEASON)

T

he rural countryside of a fictional county in England provides the backdrop for this long-running crime series based on the novels of Caroline Graham. A lush visual style, quirky characters and ubiquitous red herrings recall classic public television British mysteries of the past. At the center of the MIDSOMER MURDERS investigations is Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby, played by actor John Nettles, and Detective Sergeant Daniel "Dan" Scott.

RUBEN SALAZAR: MAN IN THE MIDDLE

T

his documentary examines the life and mysterious death of pioneering MexicanAmerican journalist Ruben Salazar. At the heart of the story is his transformation from a mainstream, Los Angeles Times reporter to a supporter of the radical Chicano movement of the late 1960s. Killed by a law enforcement officer in 1970, Salazar became an instant martyr to the Latino community. Featuring material from recently released files, the program removes Salazar from the glare of myth and martyrdom and offers a clear-eyed look at the man.
