South Africa 2010 Report: FIFA World Cup

Despite some difficulties in compiling enough data to fully evaluate the green performance of the FIFA World Cup, this report highlights many specific examples of success, energy-efficient intelligent lighting in Durban, streetlights with low-energy bulbs and traffic lights with LEDs in Cape Town, and the Bus Rapid Transport network in Johannesburg being a few of them. Based on its findings, this report drew key conclusions for South Africa that could help ensure a long-lasting environmental legacy from the World Cup, such as implementing renewable energy demonstration projects, improved transport system, energy efficiency, waste segregation programmes, and water conservation. It also makes recommendations for greening future large sporting events, such as the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. World Urbanization Prospects: The 2011 Revision (CD-ROM)

The 2011 Revision presents estimates and projections of the total, urban and rural populations of the world for the period 1950-2050. The results are shown for development groups, six major areas (i.e., Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Northern America and Oceania) and 21 regions. Data are further presented for the 231 countries or areas of the world. The 2011 Revision also provides estimates and projections of the population of urban agglomerations with at least 750,000 inhabitants in 2011 for the period 1950-2025. Estimates of the proportion of the population living in urban areas and the population of cities are based on national statistics. Business and Climate Policy: The Potentials and Pitfalls of Private Voluntary Programs

Climate change has become one of the most important and challenging global policy fields. Attention has primarily focused on the successes and failures of States and intergovernmental organizations but many more actors are involved and contribute solutions. The contributions to this book assess the different potentials of existing schemes. They scrutinize how very different programmes at national and international levels seek to marry complex public and private goals in and across industries addressing wide groups of firms. Lessons from these programmes can help design and improve programmes but they also show different types of pitfalls. Lessons learned are relevant not only for climate policy, but for the many other policy fields where private voluntary programmes are active. Climate-smart Trade and Investment in Asia and the Pacific: Towards a Triple-win Outcome

Trade and investment indirectly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions through the energy used in associated production and transportation processes to the extent that energy is generated on the basis of fossil fuels. However, if technologies can be developed and distributed which are clean and contribute to energy efficiency and conservation or use renewable energy, then trade and investment will be part of the solution rather than the problem. This publication makes a strong case for trade and investment in climate-smart goods and services, in particular climate-smart technologies resulting in a triple win for economic growth, trade and environment. The Business Case for the Green Economy: Sustainable Return on Investment

Examples in this report, from both developed and developing countries, from small-size companies to large multinationals, demonstrate how integrating sustainability into core business activities can generate a positive return on investment. Returns that go beyond the financial component and contribute to the socio-economic and environmental framework conditions necessary for business to grow and operate successfully.
