United Nations Global Compact Annual Review 2011

This annual study assesses how, and to what extent, the private sector companies that participate in the United Nations Global Compact are implementing its ten principles; taking action in support of broader UN goals and issues, and engaging with the Global Compact locally and globally. At the centre of the review are the findings from the Annual Global Compact Implementation Survey, an annual, anonymous online survey of Global Compact participants, conducted to take stock of environmental and social performance and identify trends and developments related to corporate sustainability policies and action issues. Building a Better Future for All: Selected Speeches of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon 2007-2012

The United Nations works across the world for peace, sustainable development, human rights and the rule of law. This collection of speeches by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon shows the breadth of those efforts – advances and struggles alike – at a time of profound transition for the human family. Since taking office in 2007, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has sought to mobilize the international community behind global solutions to urgent challenges ranging from climate change and poverty to armed conflict and the spread of deadly weapons. The goal: dignity, freedom and opportunity for all. Norms of Protection: Responsibility to Protect, Protection of Civilians and their Interaction

A series of humanitarian tragedies in the 1990s (Somalia, Rwanda, Srebrenica, Kosovo) demonstrated the failure of the international community to protect civilians in the context of complex emergencies. These brought to life two norms of protection – Responsibility to Protect (R2P) and Protection of Civilians (POC) – both deeply rooted in the empathy that human beings have for the suffering of innocent people. Both norms raise concerns of misinterpretation and misuse. They are developing – sometimes in parallel, sometimes diverging and sometimes converging – with varying degrees of institutionalization and acceptance. This book engages in a profound comparative analysis of the norms and aims to serve policy-makers at various levels; practitioners with protective roles; academics and researchers; civil society and R2P and POC advocates. Somalia Human Development Report 2012: Empowering Youth for Peace and Development

The new report is based on surveys conducted in more than 3,000 households in south central Somalia, Puntland and Somaliland. It reveals that although the majority of Somali youth believe they have a right to be educated (82%) and a right to decent work (71%), they feel disempowered by multiple structural barriers built into the family, institutions, local government and society at–large. The report contains a Youth Charter, developed by youth representatives from Somaliland, Puntland and south central Somalia which underlines the aspirations, perceptions and needs of young Somalis. The League of Nations: From Collective Security to Global Rearmament

In the wake of the First World War, at the Peace Conference at Versailles, US President Wilson called for the creation of a League of Nations for the purpose of affording mutual guarantees of political independence and territorial integrity to great and small nations alike. For the first time, conflicts between nations were a matter of global concern. Numerous key areas – social, economic and statistics, health, labour – were dealt with either directly by the League or indirectly by its specialized agencies. The League, the predecessor to the United Nations saw the creation of bodies that would be at the origin of the International Labour Organization, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the World Health Organization and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees.
