Trade and Development Report 2013: Winds of Change in the World Economy - Rethinking Development Strategies

The shape of the world economy has changed significantly over the last two decades, with a rising importance of several developing countries and regions as additional drivers of global economic growth. The main objective of this publication is to assess the systemic changes in the underlying structure of the world economy and to analyse the resulting policy challenges. Particular attention will be paid to a plausible scenario in which developing and transition countries must design their development strategies in a context of a prolonged period of sluggish growth in developed countries. They will need to strengthen domestic income and demand and reinvigorate regional linkages. Publisher: United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Publication Date: September 2013 ISBN: 9789211128673 Pages: 170 Price: $55.00

Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean 2012

As in previous years, this report provides a quantitative overview of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and examines these capital flows by destination economic sector and geographical area of origin. It describes the pattern of FDI originating in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, focusing on the international expansion under way at some of the region’s major companies, the so called trans-Latins. Publisher: United Nations Publication Date: July 2013 ISBN: 9789211218343 Pages: 160 Price: $20.00

Investment Policy Review: The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

The Investment Policy Reviews (IPRs) help countries improve their investment policies and familiarize governments and the international private sector with an individual country’s investment environment. The IPR of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FRYOM), initiated at the request of the FRYOM government, analyzes FDI trends and their impact on the host economy, provides a detailed evaluation of the legal and regulatory framework for investment, including concrete recommendations to improve it, and presents an overall strategy to attract investment that feeds into a government programme for stimulating investment covering the period 2011 to 2014. Publisher: United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Publication Date: July 2013 ISBN: 9789211128239 Pages: 142 Price: $30.00

Review of Developments in Transport in Asia and the Pacific 2011

This review describes the environment within which the transport sector is developing and the principal challenges that this environment poses to governments, the transport industry and society at large. The publication also focuses on tracing the significant development of roads, railways, shipping, ports, inland waterways and air transport industries and infrastructure in the region. In addition, it considers the changing delivery mechanisms across all transport sectors and discusses urban transport issues. Finally, the review examines the process of globalization, trade agreements related to transport, regionalism, collocation of production transport facilities, as well as intermodal transport systems. Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Report 2012: Recent Trends and Developments

This report focuses on trends and developments in the economies of Asia and the Pacific in their post-recovery from the 2008-2009 crisis and trade collapse. The report finds that after the initial promising signals of a recovery in 2010, exports from Asia and the Pacific are again facing a risk of deceleration. Pressure in the euro zone and the rising threat from a slowdown in the emerging economies have raised the fear of trade and investment contractions. The growth of goods exports in developing Asia and the Pacific countries, in real terms, was expected to drop in 2012, while import growth was projected to fall. Export opportunities continues to depend on the growth of intraregional demand and the ability of developing countries to deal with various external shocks. Transparency

Section I of the book contains an explanation of the concept of transparency as it is understood in the context of international investment agreements. Section II provides a review of current treaty and arbitral practice with respect to transparency issues. Section III analyses the interaction of transparency obligations with other related issues. The final section of this paper contains a series of policy options available to negotiators and those involved in revising arbitral rules. In this final section, the paper also briefly discusses the implications of those options for host State development considerations so as to assist with negotiator decision-making on whether or not to include transparency provisions in agreements, and, if so, which formulation to insert into new agreements. Expropriation

In this publication, Section I defines the concepts of direct and indirect expropriation and reviews the variety of measures that can constitute an expropriation. Section III discusses the differences between compensation for a lawful expropriation and reparation for unlawful expropriations, as well as the question of valuation of investments. Section IV offers options which policy makers and negotiators may wish to consider.
