World Economic Situation and Prospects 2013
The World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) is the definitive report of the United Nations on the state of the world economy. It highlights the continuing Euro debt crisis, the protracted jobs crisis and the possibility for the world economy to plunge back into another recession. Globalization and Development in Sub-Saharan Africa
This publication critically reviews the effects of globalization on sub-Saharan Africa over the last three decades. The large gains expected from opening up to international economic forces have, to date, been limited, while there have been significant adverse consequences. Foreign direct investment in the region has been largely confined to resource—especially mineral—extraction, even as continuing capital flight has reduced financial resources available for productive investments. Premature trade liberalization has undermined prospects for the economic development of productive capacities in many sectors – including manufacturing and agriculture -- which are not sufficiently competitive to take advantage of improvements in market access. The Hidden Alternative: Co-operative Values, Past, Present and Future
The hidden alternative Co-operative values, past, present and future Edited by Anthony Webster, Alyson Brown, David Stewart, John K. Walton and Linda Shaw
In light of the recent global economic recession, this publication seeks to challenge the hegemony of the investor led business model in economics and business studies, and needs to be promoted in relation to these debates. The contributions to this book demonstrate that cooperation offers a real and much needed alternative for the organization of human economic and social affairs, one that should establish its place at the forefront of public and academic discussion and policy making. It includes chapters on education, fair trade, politics and governance, planning, and sustainability and on how cooperatives have coped with the global economic crisis. Public Works and Social Protection in Sub-Saharan Africa: Do Public Works Work for the Poor?
Public Works Programmes (PWPs) are widely implemented in developing countries, often with funding from major international donor agencies. They provide employment for the chronically poor while creating assets for the state, offering a transfer of welfare which is also a tangible economic investment. This book critically explores the concept of the PWPs and questions their social protection performance in the context of chronic poverty. It reviews over 200 PWPs in eastern and southern Africa, using original research drawn from extensive field analysis, interviews and survey work. It also examines case studies of six international PWPs — in India, Argentina, Ireland, Ethiopia, Indonesia and the USA. It is argued that the current PWPs approach may need to be revisited. Evaluation of UNDP Partnership with Global Funds and Philanthropic Foundations
The evaluation recommends that UNDP should engage more consistently with global funds and philanthropic foundations to develop mutual approaches to development challenges. UNDP should place more explicit emphasis on the central importance of mainstreaming a human development perspective and developing national capacity. UNDP needs stronger central coordination of information and knowledge management functions in order to facilitate a more strategic approach, and should develop a partnership strategy for engaging with philanthropic foundations. As UNDP prepares to develop a new Strategic Plan against the background of a development cooperation architecture that is in considerable flux, this may be a key moment for decision-making with respect to UNDP partnership initiatives.
