THREE-WEEK

JANUARY SESSION Taking a course during this session isn't required, but gives students the chance to catch up, get ahead, or take enrichment courses outside of their degree.

The course will be at an accelerated pace. Your student should contact the course instructor for more information on what that means for them.

Attendance and participation will be critical to your student's success as there are limited class meetings. Ensure they have time to commit to the entire three-week session.

Your student's spring financial aid may be used for a January session. Find more information here.

Three-week session courses will fill up quickly or may be canceled due to low enrollment, so your student should enroll early. View available courses here.

NURTURINGSTUDENTMENTALHEALTH

UNOCOUNSELING& PSYCHOLOGICALSERVICES College is a whirlwind of new experiences and challenges. While these changes are exciting, they can be stressful and seriously impact the mental health of students.

CAPS, located in the H&K building, offers help for every enrolled UNO student. Services include short-term counseling, support groups, referrals to other resources, and crisis care.

According to the American College Health Association, a recent survey of over 54,000 undergraduate students revealed that approximately 77% were experiencing moderate to serious psychological distress.

Keiser says one of the issues she sees regularly in students is loneliness and the desire to build more social support.

Katherine Keiser, MS, LIMHP, is a mental health therapist and Associate Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at UNO. She says that poor mental health creates a vicious cycle that impacts a student?s ability to succeed. ?For example, symptoms of untreated depression and anxiety can zap a person?s motivation, self-confidence, and ability to get restful sleep," said Keiser. "Then, even if they were an effective learner before, they find they can?t seem to focus." For students hesitating to seek help for their mental health, Keiser emphasizes that they aren't alone.

"I often refer students to check out UNO Student Involvement and other offerings around campus,? said Keiser. It's crucial for parents to be vigilant for signs of struggling students, although mental health struggles can look different for everyone. Isolation, withdrawal, recklessness, and hopelessness are causes for concern. Keiser suggests that parents should maintain open lines of communication, offer guidance, encourage students to seek help when needed, and assist with finding resources. Through this time of personal growth and learning, it's integral that students prioritize mental well-being to make the most of their college experience.
