UNODanceMarathonraisesmorethan$63kfor Children'sNebraska

UNOstudents,faculty,staff andmembersof thecommunitygatheredat theMiloBail Student Center onUNO'sDodgeCampusfor OMAThon2024onApril 6.Thisyear's effortsraised$63,788.66,smashingtheoriginal goal of $60,000.

HostedbyUNODanceMarathon,OMAThonisa12-hour fundraiser that raisesmoney for Children'sNebraska(formerlyknownasOmahaChildren'sHospital &Medical Center).Theannual event istheculminationof ayear'sworthof fundraising.

All of themoneyraisedbyUNODanceMarathongoestoChildren'sNebraskathrough Children'sMiracleNetworkHospitals.Children'sNebraskaistheonlyfull-service pediatricspecialtyhealthcarecenter inNebraska.Patientsarereferredfromthroughout theregionandbeyondfor thetreatment of complexor unusual diseasesinaddingto pediatricprimarycare.At Children'sNebraska,nochildinneedof medical careisever turnedawayduetoaninabilitytopay.

UNODanceMarathonwasestablishedinfall 2015.Sincethat semester,the organizationhasworkedtobringawarenesstoChildren'sNebraskaandthegreat work theydofor thekidsinour communities.Sincethefirst OMAthonin2016,theMaverick communityhasraisedmorethan$250,000.

"TheUniversityof NebraskaOmahaandour studentsaredeeply committedtoour community,andthisisonesmall waywegiveback. I'msoproudof thisgroupandhappytobebackwiththemaswe support our MiracleKids."

UNO's60 Minutesof Service

Eachmonth,UNOstudentshavethe chancetomakeahugecommunity impact injust onehour through60 Minutesof Service.

Thesevolunteer opportunitiessupport local non-profit organizations.Students canservebetweentheir classesor workshifts,meet newstudents,and learnmoreabout theimpact of organizationstheymaybeunfamiliar with.

Inthepast twoyears,studentshave workedwithnon-profitslikeCivic Nebraska,I BeBlackGirl,NoMore EmptyPots,andothers.

May's60Minutesof Servicetakes placeMay8th,andthethemeis centeredaroundself-care.

"It focusesonhowtaking careof ourselvesisanact of servicebecausewecannot pour intoour communitiesif wedonot pour intoourselves," saidToni Monette,Volunteer andCivic Engagement Coordinator for UNO's Officeof Engagement. Monettehopesthat volunteering experiencesstaywithstudentseven after graduationandinspiresthemto continueservingthecommunity.

"I hopetheymeet someoneor doservicefor acausethat reallystickswiththemthat they want tocontinuetoworkon. Ultimately,I hopestudents understandthat small actsof servicecanbetransformative andtheyshouldalwayslookfor thoseopportunitiesastheygo throughcollegeandlife,"she said.

Studentscaneasilyget involved with60Minutesof Service.The eventsareheldonthethird Wednesdayof eachmonthfrom 12pmto1pm,typicallyinthe MiloBail Student Center.No registrationisrequiredand lunchisserved.
