Welcome to the 49th Annual Zia Marching Band Fiesta! The University of New Mexico Department of Music is proud to host the Zia Marching Band Fiesta in partnership with UNM Athletics. While I am a professor of voice at UNM, I played trumpet throughout high school and College. Having spent countless hours of my own musical development on the marching band practice field, I know the incredible level of commitment and dedication that each of the students, teachers, and parents participating today has devoted to this performance. I also remember the excitement and anticipation that comes with these performances. I would like to congratulate all students for the tremendous amount of time and energy that they have given to this performance. I know they will always remember the feel of the field under their feet and sound of the crowd as they entered the stadium for this performance. It is inspiring to see hundreds of students taking the field today and it reminds us why music education is so important. The students performing today are a shining example of what music education teaches: a commitment to excellence and the work ethic required to achieve that excellence. I would like to thank the music educators who have spent their summers planning these exciting and intricate programs and their falls teaching them, reminding us of the commitment that good teaching requires. In addition, all the parents deserve a heartfelt thank you for sacrificing their time, energy, and in many cases, their sleep, shepherding these amazing students to and from rehearsals, sectionals, and lessons that begin before the sun rises and end long after the sun sets. Each band here is a perfect example of collaboration and community. Whether on the field or in our communities, we are stronger when we work together towards a common goal, listen to each other, and follow our passions. I would also like to formally thank all the members of the University of New Mexico Spirit Marching Band for spending their Saturday making this event work. The members of the Spirit Marching Band, many of whom participated in Zia as high school students, serve as the behind-the-scenes workforce that keeps everything on time and running smoothly. This event would be impossible without their efforts. Finally, I would like to thank the Director of Bands, Dr. Emily Moss, and all of the members of the UNM Bands staff including Associate Director of Bands, Dr. Chad Simons, Director of Athletic Bands, Dr. Geoffrey Harman, and Program Coordinator, Mikal Stober, for continuing to put on a first-class event and for their dedication to music education in New Mexico. I know today will be a wonderful day of exciting music and dramatic visual effect, so please join me in cheering for all of the bands that will perform today at Zia! Go Lobos! Michael Hix, D.M.

Dear Participants, Spectators, and Directors, It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 49th annual Zia Marching Fiesta. The UNM students, faculty, staff, and administration are always excited to hold this event which brings marching music lovers from numerous states to our campus. We hope you enjoy your time in University Stadium. While I may serve as the director of the marching band, it is the students who make this performance happen. They exemplify the best of what UNM students have to offer in the Music Department and across campus. Their ceaseless dedication to excellence drives our rehearsals and performances. When I asked the student leadership to describe the ensemble, they created a chant to encapsulate what it means to be a member of the Spirit Marching Band. WE ARE… STRONG UNITED SPIRIT TODOS SOMOS LOBOS The future of the Spirit Marching Band is on the field today! The marching band is open to both music majors and non-music majors, as well as non-degree-seeking students. Did you know that the 2026 Spirit Marching Band is comprised of nearly 70% non-music majors? Regardless of your major, if you are willing to better yourself and the world around you, we have a place for you at the University of New Mexico. We invite you to join our community and hope to see you on our campus after your high school graduation. If you would like more information about the marching band, I encourage you to visit the Athletic Bands page on the UNM Band’s website which can be found via the link below. Dr. Geoffrey B. Welcome to the Zia Marching Band Fiesta! Welcome to the 49th Annual Zia Marching Band Fiesta! Whether this is the first year that your band has participated in the Fiesta or the forty-eight year (Clovis High School, Eldorado High School, and a host of others), we hope to make this an enjoyable and entertaining day for everyone. For over two generations, the Zia Marching Band Fiesta has provided regional high school bands an opportunity to perform, to learn from others and to share in the excitement of friendly competition. The mission of the Zia Marching Band Fiesta is as follows: 1. Provide high school marching bands an outstanding performance venue in which to display their talents. Renovations to University Stadium have made it one of the top sports facilities in the Southwest. The competition is being held on a turf field--Branch Field. The old wooden bleachers and running track are long gone, making way for a state-ofthe-art football stadium. The Fiesta gives many students their first opportunity to play in such a large venue with such a large, appreciative audience. 2. Provide students the opportunity for a positive educational experience through performance, observation and competition with other high school bands. Participating bands have worked long and hard on their shows. They strive to present the best possible show at the contest. Students are strongly encouraged to watch other bands and appreciate the efforts of other groups—knowing only too well how difficult it is to perform. Who better understands the weeks of preparation and practice that have gone into each show than someone who has done the same?

3. Provide students and directors with high quality, constructive feedback and adjudication from a nationally recognized panel of experts in marching band. The finest judges from across the nation have been gathered to act as adjudicators for this event. All have a wealth of experience in the field and are willing to share their comments and expertise with the participating bands. 4. Provide parents and members of the community an opportunity to observe, compare and support each of the performing bands. On this day, members of the audience are treated to a total of 25 performances by some of the finest, most disciplined, and positive high school students around. Behind the drums, the flashing instruments, and the rippling flags are students facing the every day challenges of being a teenager while still coming together to create something bigger than all of them. Although the Fiesta History reflects changes made in the contest over the years and mirrors some of the demographic changes in the region, the Fiesta is not just about who makes finals or who is the Zia Grand Champion. The values instilled by participation in marching band last a lifetime. Students learn to work within a team but also discover that a team is made up of individuals—each with their own important part to play. They experience the camaraderie that develops from dedication to a shared interest and find a willingness to make sacrifices toward a positive end. We hope that everyone—participants, directors, parents and other spectators will enjoy this day filled with music, marching and fun!
