The winter edition comes the 2017 presentation of gear. As the snow is melting in the mountains, the winter is coming to an end. The wake riders couldn’t be happier to see spring and warm weather around the corner.

Wake season starts earlier and earlier each year. Snowboard brands don’t like this because now the snowboard season is three months and wake season lasts the remaining nine months. Times are changing.

The 3S’s: Snow, Surf, & Skate markets are dwindling. They are being replaced by the 3W’s: Wakeboard, Wakesurf and Wakeskate.

The number of people participating in wake sports is growing by 25% each year. It’s worldwide and expanding rapidly in countries like China, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand. This year the number of cable parks grew from 800 to 1000 parks around the world.

We can start using the term «wake resorts’ much like people refer to winter ski resorts. Many of these new wake parks offer a multitude of activities in and around the water.

2017 will be the Year of Wake. We are so proud that Unleashed Wakeboard Magazine is the main worldwide media supporter of this amazing sport. Robert Scholten is an artist from Melbourne, Australia, currently wandering around South-East Asia. He worked in graphic design for a while, but decided to focus on his art and illustration. He likes doodling while you think he’s listening. He plays with his food, which he ordered too spicy anyway. You can find his art is spread on napkins, walls, drum kits, comics, and canvases. A lot of his work has themes of nature, people, and inner soul.

Being part Filipino and part Dutch, layers of cultures also inspire Rob. He loves to explore the world and fill sketchbooks inspired by these experiences, which also add to his other work. Martin Martin, nicknamed M2X, from his real name Laurent Bolorinos, is a French artist from Toulouse.

He started his DJ career when he was very young and became passionate about electronic music.

As a winter sports lover, wakeboarding is a good substitute for snow, and mixing his two passions came easily to him.

M2X often mixes at wakeparks with musical and punchy sets in a sunny lounge atmosphere for the happiness of riders and families. This is a special place of human interaction where people share a great time while making memories, achieving new tricks all with M2X creating a soundtrack for life.

We wish him the best and hope he discovers new trendy spots, travels around the world, meets other musicians,and continues performing, progressing and making a living from his passion!

An urban definition of the word brother: “A person whom you are related to. Sometimes a role model. Sometimes an ass. Sometimes a friend.

A person who you are stuck being related to until the day you die through thick or thin…”

If you follow the Pro Circuit you won’t be a stranger to the Peacocks. They are, of course, two brothers who are starting to make a big mark on the sport.

These guys are part of a new generation of wake boarders, attempting tricks that have never been performed, or even thought possible. The words “Go Big or Go Home” resonate every time they ride. “ Before we go any further, there should be an introduction. We are Mantis Pro Media; a collaboration between Jon Shrimpton (JSP) and Sam Pascall (SPI), specializing in Photography and Videography, working as a team to bring our clients a completely unique Media Package.”

This article is all about the making of Ryan and Liam Peacock’s new 2017 video edit, an edit with a twist…

Originally approached by Mystic, through Watersports World, we were sent a brief to produce a short film about Ryan to help promote this month’s front cover of Unleashed (shot back in 2016 at Club Wake Park in Grendon, Northamptonshire).

But this was a problem; there’s no show without Punch, the brothers come as a pair. So with a little re-work of the brief, it was agreed we would work with both Ryan and Liam. Unleashed was more

than happy to let us add this article, to accompany the front cover and edit, which has really helped tie everything together.

The aim for us was to capture exactly what the lads are made of, showcasing how the Peacock Brothers are now at the forefront of pushing their sport to the next level.

Even though we know the boys quite well, we wanted to get a true picture of what drives them and who they are. With an original schedule of two days on this project we were not just stoked, but massively grateful, when Sarah and Paul, Mum and Dad Peacock, invited us to stay with them at the family home for a week. This not only provided the opportunity to start filming and shooting early, but also to immerse ourselves in the Peacocks’ lives, seeing how close a family unit they are and how that has shaped the brothers.

Ryan is seriously laid back, in the words of mum, Sarah, he wouldn’t have been the big brother he is to Liam if he wasn’t. Ryan has a quiet confidence that you don’t usually see in someone so young; he knows exactly what he wants and how he’s going to achieve it. Liam, on the other hand, though with the same confidence in his own ability, is an absolute firecracker. He is a real character: funny, upbeat and definitely the guy to cheer you up when you’re feeling down. Both are a perfect reflection of their upbringing and a credit to mum and dad.

So the Edit…

The plan was, days 1 and 2, we would spend at the Peacocks’ home park, JBSki in Chertsey, to get an intro and some simple riding shots. Day 3, was to be spent in London working on the lifestyle material for the entire package, and then the final two days we would ride at Liquid Leisure and Club Wake Park to get the epic ride shots we were after. Well it didn’t go quite as planned… We did have an amazing first three days filming, the weather turned out perfect and we were more than happy with all the footage and pictures we had.

Genuinely you’d have thought they were parked around the corner waiting for this to happen. After a colossal amount of gas and air, Ryan was taken to hospital, with Sam in tow, making sure we captured every moment of what was going on.

The decision was made that myself and Liam would stay on at Liquid to finish filming and shooting the rest of the session.

Day 4, however, forty minutes into the first session at Liquid Leisure, Ryan went out to capture a heel 9; instead of him smashing the trick he ended up smashing himself and blew

filming until literally the closing hours of the shoot. Liam was really keen on getting a kicker-to-kicker shot, and after a few successful hits he ended up slipping out on the first kicker and full on smashed into the second. It was brutal. First of all we thought he was just winded, that was until we got him out of the water, he had two savage gashes on his hips. We couldn’t believe it, what are the odds of the two brothers injuring themselves like this within the space of 24 hours.

Again we had to call an ambulance, concerned he may have fractured his pelvis or have internal injuries. We had managed to stop the bleeding from Liam’s hips, but he seemed to go from being in pain to being in complete agony. We’re not afraid to admit it was pretty scary. The ambulance finally arrived

and he was rushed to Coventry Hospital’s specialist trauma unit for impact injuries, where he was quickly surrounded by a team of doctors, assessed and scanned. Unbelievably Liam left hospital 24 hours later with just a few stitches to the hips and severe bruising to the waist and lungs.

Liam is now on the road to recovery and by the time this article is released, we’d like to think, back on his board shredding hard. Ryan, on the other hand, is going to have a longer journey; with a badly torn MCL and ACL plus a stretched patella tendon, it’s going to need multiple surgeries and a lot of rehab before he’s back on the water. But believe us when we say he will be back to carry on exactly where he left off.

We think what this edit has taught us about the Peacock Brothers, is that they live and breathe wakeboarding; pushing themselves so hard to advance the sport, that putting their bodies on the line is nothing. After the sport being hit so hard in the past few years with life changing injuries we can honestly say that Ryan and Liam couldn’t have been luckier. It’s been a privilege for both myself and Sam to have spent this time with the Peacock family and been given the freedom to continue to film and shoot through the bumps along the way. We’d like to take this opportunity on behalf of Mantis Pro Media to thank everyone involved in the making of this eventful and distinctive project. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as we did.

Last summer we teamed up with our ambassadors: Antoni van der Wekken, Daniel Grant, Victor Salmon and Dirk Gideonse for the WAXHAT Winch Tour.

We had an awesome crew, filmers Dries Mollen & Ivar Vermeulen, photographer Jarno Schurgers and Elke Venken who was driving the follow boat.

Our mission was to hit as many unique urban winch spots in Belgium and the Netherlands, within one week!

We kicked off the winch tour in Belgium, where our friend Dirk van Esser gave us a place to sleep in his house. He was a great helping hand during the tour!

Thanks to our TrekTouw winch we could trust on a fast and powerful pull which was an true essential for these crazy spots.

After four days hitting Belgium we finished the winch tour between the cows in the Netherlands. Hitting the streets is hard work but we can’t wait to hit more!

The name of the project came up to me wa y b a c k i n 2 0 0 8 w h e n I h a d a n i d e a fo r a wakeboard contes t in the middle of the winter.

I always thought about new, different places to wakeboard and since I couldn’ t get t h e i d e a o u t o f my h e a d , a f ew ye a r s l a t e r I made the fir s t idea for this project.

Eventually an opportunity presented itself where I could do the entire project with zero. In 2013, at the end of summer, a friend of mine brought me to a small town Hotavlje and introduced me to Miran Ĺ inkovec, a man who built a 2.0 system made out of wood and an old ski lift in a little creek, in his backyard. Before even hitting the water, that day I thought to myself, if it was winter right now I could just ollie on to the side and shred powder right there.

There was almost no snow in the valleys of Slovenia that year, but of the next winter, it was dumping for a few days, so I grabbed my wakeboard, my 3mm wetsuit and got in the car with my filming buddy Borij who believed in the project. When we arrived it was still snowing and I was not exactly sure how the board would ride in the snow, but it worked and I was pretty stoked to ride some pow that day.

Borij got another filmer from his company on board and I got an awesome photographer and friend Klavdija, who I’ve worked with in the past, to join us. We only had two more days for filming, warm very early and my new wakepark was melting quickly. On the last day we built the wooden pipe and since I am not exactly a licensed snow park shaper, the approach was way too soft, hence the epic crash that was actually not as painful as another one later that day. So I reshaped the incline, put my wet wetsuit back on and had a few more hits on the thing.

For some unexplainable reason the whole thing was never finished, until my good friend Mark Pirc, who edited two of my previous projects, was kind enough to edit this one as well.

So here we go, the whole story, more than five years to get from an idea to an actual clip...

Take a hard edge onto the kicker. You really have to focus on getting the right pop off the kicker. You only want to start spinning after you’ve already left the kicker. After the take-off start turning your head and push the handle towards your body as hard as possible in order to be able to handle pass the 900. Try to spin as fast as possible. Before landing try to spot the water and prepare your legs for a soft and easy landing. Doing a 720 with a grab before the 900 will help. Cheers

The Picture team searched for a sustainable and responsible alternative to the rarely recyclable and polluting neoprene: “a high quality wetsuit, following our 100% eco-friendly vision”. So, instead of synthetic rubber, the brand usesa natural one which permits to reduce by half the carbon footprint !

THE RESULT

The NaturalPrene stretch technology: a wetsuit made of 85% natural rubber from a Malaysian plantation and 15% synthetic chlorine-free rubber. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Oskar Gejler and I’m 23 years old. I’ve been wakeskating for a good amount of years and man, it just gets better and better. Besides wakeskating I work at a bar in Västerås, where my local park is located as well.

The Wakeskate Tour came back for 2016, what did you think about the tour?

I think the tour this year was really sick! So stoked that I was able to make it to two of the three stops this year. The first stop I made was at Valdosta Cablepark and it was so much fun. Just a good week of endless riding. If it hadn’t been so hot I would’ve done laps at the full size cable, even use the full size for warming up before your heat so you didn’t have to step into the competition with cold legs. Couldn’t make it to Suwannee but heard it was a blast, as always! Nick is always doing a good job with that place. Then there was the last stop, Battle Falls. Really pumped I was able to make it to that one as well, and the new setup was so much fun! Rad with something new to the game.

Whats the best part about wakeskating for you?

The best part about wakeskating for me, is that it’s so free. As long as you have a board and a place to ride you can just do whatever you want and it will feel so good. No matter if you´re just carving around the cable, barefoot, for a soul sesh or if you´re at a winch spot with your homies working on a trick. At the end of the day, it will always be a good time.

How did a typical day look for you when you were back home in Sweden this summer?

I stayed with two really good buds of mine in Västerås this summer, and still do! So we woke up, went to the iron gym, got fit, and flexed all summer long baby! Haha na just kidding man, pretty much slept in, made some bacon, went to the cable and wakeskated for a good bit. Then ordered some of that goodie good swedish kebabpizza or kebab roll from the pizza place that delivers, then skated for a good bit. Then at night time we went working at the bar, haha, always a good time!

Who are you riding for? Who are your sponsors?

I’m riding for Remote Wakeskates, Aquarium grip, Nocomply surfshop, Västerås Cablepark & soffta eyewear.

You went to the WWA Worlds at CWC in October… how was it and how did it go?

It was so much fun man, they really killed it with the event and getting everyone to have a good time!

The contest was really fun and I was super stoked on taking 2nd place on the plaza section! Can’t wait until next time.

What are your plans for this winter?

This winter I’m moving to a ski resort in northern Sweden called Åre for about 6 months. Just snowboard and work, then be stoked as hell for the 2017 season when it starts again!

Any last words man?

Yeah, lets all keep the good vibes and the love up in the wakeskate community! Everyone is fucking slaying it. Can’t wait to see all the homies next year when the season starts, or what the hell, come snowboard with me in Sweden this winter! Haha, peace and love.

How did you get into wakeboarding & how long have you been at it?

My brother, Neal, first introduced me to wakeboarding. He was a kitesurfer and used wakeboarding to train when it wasn’t windy enough. I only went a couple of times while living in England and didn’t think much about it till I moved to Australia in 2011. I got hooked on it in 2012 and haven’t stopped since.

What trick(s) are you most proud of?

Hmmmm. Tough one! I’ve been working on both kicker and rail game a lot recently to try and add more style in, hold grabs for longer and move in a way that I don’t look like a dork! It really depends on the day as to what I feel proud of. In the past, kicker inverts. Today, transfers and step-ups. Tomorrow….hmmmm?

I’ve been pretty lucky and only had muscle strains/tears which haven’t kept me off the water for too long. I’ve learned how to be patient when it comes to muscle recovery.

How did you get into wakeboarding?

I first tried wakeboarding five years ago when I rode behind a friend’s boat, but then later found a wakepark in Argentina and just loved it! When I started riding we didn’t have any full size cables in Argentina, so I used to ride at all the 2.0’s that were around Buenos Aires. I was big into snowboarding during the winter and I realized that wakeparks were just like snowparks. I was stoked! In July 2015 a new cable in Buenos Aires opened and it was then that I started riding almost every day. I’ve been riding for almost two years

Have you had any setbacks?

Yes, I dislocated my hip in September. It was really tough because I could have lost my hip. But luckily I got over it, spent time in rehab and here I am!

What tricks do you like doing on your board?

I really like pressing on the nose. I really like noseslide backside 270 out or just messing around. I like blinds too!

What did you learn from your setback?

What do you do outside of riding?

Favorite park besides your own?

So I learned two things: The first one is to take rests. I was pushing myself too hard, it was the day after a competition, my body was asking me to stop and I just kept riding, and well, the bone came out in a stupid crash. The second one is that eventually you will always get over injuries - so I’m not afraid of getting injured again. Of course I don’t like them, I hate them, and I try to do everything to prevent them, but they will happen if they have to.

Favorite riders?

Yeaaaaa, coming to the US this season, probably Valdosta for some time! So excited!! Can’t wait to ride a full size again!

So I used to do horse jumping before wake boarding then I had to stop when I went to Law School, and I just graduated.

I became a lawyer this past December - WTF!?!

Board? Used to ride the Shredtown 2016 (so sick!) Now I just got the new Reflex + Rad. I’m so hyped!

The girls and women at the top of wakeboarding right now. Seeing them hit all the same set ups as the guys are hitting and killing it helps me to be brave and push myself when I ride.

I cracked my hip at the beginning of last summer and was out for three months. Getting healed and being able to ride again was the best feeling ever.

I learned how much I really loved the sport when I was down and couldn’t ride.

Upcoming goals/plans?

I want to really work at improving my kicker game this year and be able to grab everything I do off of it.

Any setbacks?

After high school I had a setback because I didn’t know what I wanted to do as a career. I tried community college for a little while, but turned out it wasn’t for me. I moved to Texas in 2015, started wakeboarding cable and fell in love. This setback showed me that there’s always something around the corner and whenever one door closes, a new one will open.

Besides your home park which parks are your favorites?

I really love to shred at Terminus - the features are huge!!!

We drive to Action Wake Park in Michigan pretty often and it’s five hours from my home.

Do you have any favorite riders?

My favorite rider is Alexa Score she is the strongest woman I have ever met!! Guenther Oka motivates me. I’ve been watching him ride my entire short career.

Upcoming Plans?

I will always push through my limits, and unfortunately that’s also my vice.

Tell us about your recent setback?

I live a double life. In addition to riding I am working full time as a therapist where I treat addicted people.

In 2015 I tore my ACL, damaged my meniscus and PLC which forced me to undergo surgery and recover for nine months. I had a really hard time mentally, but I learned important things! To enjoy every moment on the water and to be aware of my boundaries (and my body). Also I learned how important it is to be surrounded with loving people. A special shoutout (thanks) to my good friend and physiotherapist Rodi Kosterman from Bodyproof. Best idea to have a fellow wakeboarder as your recovery coach!

Favorite park besides your own? I can’t choose! I love

Any upcoming goals / plans?

My boyfriend skateboards, so I am recently learning to skateboard a bit, that’s pretty hardcore! I also like snowboarding and surfing, although I suck at surfing. I also practice yoga and this winter I started kickboxing to keep in shape.

What do you do outside of riding?

CWC (Philippines) Langenfeld and the Bricks (Germany), Burnside cable park (the Netherlands) & BCP in Belgium.

Travel more (hitting Thailand at the moment!), getting on that handrail this year, do some competitions and I hope to inspire more women to wakeboard.

How did you get into wake sports & how long have you been at it?

I have always loved surfing and grew up wishing I could get into the sport but never lived close enough to the ocean. My dad came home from work one day with a wakeboard when we had just moved to a house on Lake Austin about eight years ago. I was stoked and we went out to try it that weekend and from that point on, I was hooked.

I got even more stoked when I was introduced to wakesurfing, which allowed me to get the feel of surfing but on an endless boat wave.

What trick(s) are you most proud of?

Wakeboarding: HS front 5 / Wakesurfing: Huge bottom turns with a snap on top of the wake on the way back up

What do you do outside of riding? School? Work? Tell us about you!!!

Outside of classes and riding, you can find me paddleboarding on the lake or hiking. I have this constant need to be outside, so I’m really always doing something outdoors. Austin has a ton of beautiful trails with stunning falls and creeks to admire. I also longboard (ocean style board), longboard (skating), and snowboard. Really, I’m into pretty much any board sport, especially if it is on the water.

Favorite park besides your own?

Next Level Ride in Austin.

Favorite rider?

My buddy Graeme will always have my respect as far as riding goes.

Best habit / Worst vice?

Best habit - My incessant need to get outside everyday & actually doing it.

Worst vice - I tend to give people too many chances, no matter what.

I usually end up getting used and/or hurt. I still haven’t learned. I always stick around hoping I can help everyone and often times, people don’t want it anyway.

What do you love about wakeboarding/ wakesurfing?

These sports are my passion. They allow me to push myself mentally and physically while being out on the water, my happy place. I love the people I’ve met from these sports and the places it’s taken me.

Ever have any setbacks? What did you learn from your setback?

I’ve sustained two serious leg/ knee injuries from wakeboarding and I’ve had a good amount of recovery time for each. The injuries have frustrated me and made me second guess my involvement in wakeboarding. I compete professionally in wakesurfing and the injuries I’ve gotten from wakeboarding have set me back in wakesurfing.

That has been discouraging but in the end, I wouldn’t ever give up my passions just because of setbacks and the element of risk. Everything we love has substantial risk in some way and we have to be willing to take those risks head on!

Never give up on your passions! Make your life worth living and do what makes you happy!

Any upcoming goals / plans?

I plan on competing at the professional level in wakesurfing again this season and really push myself in my riding and promotion of the brand I ride for.

The park has a full-size cable as well as a little bro. In addition, the guys from GCP have built their own winch cable.

They made the frame from scrap metal, bought an old scooter engine at the market and took the brakes from a bike.

The first test took place at the nearest sea beach on November 4, 2016.

The next trial was on the very next day at the Dim Cay river in the South-Eastern part of Alanya. The spot is a cascade of trhee drops with 2-4 meters distance. It’s important to have high speed to overcome all three drops.

The boys worked very cohesively and it was a pleasure to photograph them. The first attempt saw them pass the nearest drop, and the next - the full line. After the race we asked Nikita about the temperature in the mountain river. “Very hot!”, said Nikita, pleased with his success and filled with emotions.

Akela: At Lotus Wakepark in Kaohsiung, South of Taiwan.

Who is the best?

A: Me! Mishka: No, I am. I came in first at Nationals.

A: Yes, but I came in first at most of the others.

Do you like competing against each other?

M: Yes, because if I win, then I know that I am better than Akela.

A: Sometimes, mmm only if I win. If Mishka wins then I am happy for her and will try harder to beat her the next time.

M: Our father taught us how it is easy to take the win, it’s how you deal with the loss that shows your character.

A: That’s the nature of competitions.

Typical day at the cable park?

A: In the morning, from about 10 to 12, I will try a few new tricks or keep practicing what I have been working on. Then in the afternoon, just ride with my friends and have fun.

M: Pretty much the same. I practice something new in the morning and have fun riding with my friends in the afternoon. If the park isn’t too busy, then I will do some wakeskating and even some barefoot on the cable.

Other cable parks?

A: Philippines. Deca, Republic and Pradera.

M: We were in Pradera when all the D.U.P. riders were there and for the Homies Totally Rad 3.

A: It was so much fun and so cool, we got to ride doubles with all the guys from D.U.P.

Favorite Cable Park?

M: They are all fun and different. Pradera for the rails and Lotus because it’s home and where I ride with my friends.

A: I like all of them but home is Lotus Wakepark.

Favorite Rider?

A: D.U.P. Deltaco Fi 136 with Unite Fi bindings.

A: Well the park is like our second home but if we aren’t there, then maybe skateboarding. There is a cool skate park in the city or at the beach surfing.

M: Yes, surfing or skateboarding. Sometimes it’s nice to take a break and get hungry to wakeboard again.

Favorite tricks?

M: Whatever I am learning at the time becomes my favorite trick.

I am busy riding switch and doing front 5’s off the kickers. Sometimes just boosting off the kickers and trying all the different grabs.

A: It changes all the time, at the moment I am busy having fun going off the rails back 180 to blind.

Sometimes I attempt a gap 360 on the roof top, but it can be scary.

M: My tic tac double press on the slider is fun.

A: Maybe my front 3 with a grab.

A: Ah pretty much the same and all the people and staff at Lotus Wakepark that make hanging out there fun.

HOME BASE

In the past 25 years, wakeboarding has become an acclaimed sport the world over, creating a movement of riders and enthusiasts, which culminates in competions worldwide.With the wake sports capital here in sunny Florida, Miami Wake Academy seeks to bring the joy of these activities to Miami and help solidify the city as the epicenter for all things watersports.

Miami Wake Academy seeks to offer a watersports experience at a higher level of professionalism and style currently missing from the Miami watersports market.

We seek to provide a truly unique experience for the patron, from our office, which will be located inside a houseboat acting as home base, to the locale we will use for the rides.

The office will include a café that will offer refreshments to patrons as they wait to go out on the waves and a staff that is dedicated to sharing their passion for nautical sports. Here the patrons can truly appreciate the locale we have chosen to operate from.

We will include a washroom with showers, lockers, and all the amenities you would expect that will help you emerge feeling cleaned and refreshed after your session on the waves.

The rooftop will feature a bohemian-inspired waiting area with hammocks and beach beds that create a relaxing atmosphere for students to wait for their sessions.

MISSION AND VISION

Miami Wake Academy’s ethos is a marriage of passion and business to create the most professional and intimate experience for the riders to become acquainted with wakeboarding or further their existing skills.

Miami Wake Academy wants to share its passion for wake sports with seasoned veterans, complete beginners, and everyone in between. Our goal is to create an experience that will leave beginning-level patrons with intermediate skills and aspiration to achieve professional poise and skill level on the water.

Our whole concept is to provide a state-of-the-art, top-of-therange experience for anyone interested in watersports and to coach the riders from their very first wake, beyond a fun hobbyist experience, into full-fledged training including proper technique, position on the board, and how to get the most from each ride.

THE TEAM

Miami Wake Academy’s ownership and management are passionate about wake boarding in Miami. The hands-on team of experienced coaches will be made up of professionals who have spent years honing their skills and abilities in the watersports world. Our hospitality team stationed at the home base will provide an all-encompassing welcome experience for our students from the moment they arrive to fill out their paperwork to the second they leave the base to enter the boat for their Runs.
