With all the new ships we’re launching in 2027 and 2028, I’ve spent a lot of time this year going behind the scenes with our designers and ship builders—tinkering away at the details that make a ship story come to life, hand-selecting materials, and witnessing what it takes to build a ship from scratch. It’s a beautiful process, one that involves countless teams who are passionate about the way Uniworld approaches design—every ship is its own project, and nothing is ever mass-produced. In honor of the talented teams I’ve had the opportunity to work with this year, this issue of RiverViews is dedicated to design. Keep reading to learn what we mean when we call our ships “floating boutique hotels,” learn about the design processes and inspirations behind some of our upcoming fleet additions, and more. Sincerely,

ELLEN BETTRIDGE CEO, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

FLOATING BOUTIQUE HOTELS

Sail a few voyages with Uniworld, and you’ll come to notice how every ship we build is custom designed—from Hapsburg splendor aboard S.S. Maria Theresa to Fortuny fabrics on S.S. La Venezia. It’s a unique approach to river cruising, one that has defined the Uniworld experience for decades. But why does it matter? Story-driven design and an emphasis on high-quality materials add something invaluable to your stay. A true floating boutique hotel doesn’t merely take you through your destinations. It doesn’t even stop at bringing your destinations onboard. Rather, it introduces you to a side of your destinations you may never have known to look for. It makes beauty part of the journey. The Design Desk of the S.S. Helen

What is a ship named for Helen of Troy, the famed figure of Greek mythology, doing sailing the waters of Central Europe? Greek culture reached the regions along the Danube through trade and especially through the Romans. As a result, Greek influences spread throughout Europe and had a lasting impact on European art and architecture. Helen herself was a prominent figure in artworks from the medieval periods, the Renaissance, and beyond, often as a metaphorical stand-in for the very concept of beauty.

3

A Danube river cruise ship and Greek architecture share the same core design values: harmony, light, simplicity, and a strong connection to water. While the Danube offers an ever-changing journey through Europe, Greek design creates calm, timeless spaces using natural materials, soft colors, and balanced proportions. Applied on board, this translates into bright interiors with panoramic views, natural stone, wood, linen, and a neutral palette accented with blues and earthy tones. Rather than recreating a traditional Greek setting, the design embraces the philosophy of Mediterranean elegance—creating a serene, luxurious atmosphere that complements the peaceful rhythm of cruising along the Danube.

We were particularly inspired by the Greek concept of philoxenia. Representing the cultural value placed on hospitality, where even strangers are to be welcomed as close friends, philoxenia speaks to the community atmosphere of river cruising and our team’s passion for warm service.

Have you ever wondered how Uniworld determines what a new ship in our fleet should be named? Just as our itineraries are curated to the destinations they sail, we often look to inspiring figures connected to those same destinations to name our ships. We have always expressed ourselves through artistry in our ships’ designs, so it is only fitting that the ships named in this article are each inspired by an artist with ties to the regions we sail.

NEW FOR 2027 Audrey Kathleen Hepburn-Ruston was born in Brussels on May 4, 1929, to a Dutch Baroness mother and English father. You'll find nods to her Dutch heritage throughout the S.S. Audrey—such as the Delft pottery in the lounge. Dutch flora and fauna are also sprinkled throughout the ship in the form of fabrics with Dutch birds and wallpaper featuring etchings of the Netherlands’ iconic tulips. The era in which Hepburn rose to fame in the ‘50s and ‘60s —with hit movies such as Roman Holiday (1953), Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), and My Fair Lady (1964)—is expressed onboard through the mid-century modern design that was popular at the time. Her influence as a style icon reveals itself through pops of color and fun use of patterns. Her famous pearls decorate the bow of the ship, and Hubert de Givenchy sketches can be found in staterooms in honor of the bond between her and the designer who created her little black dress. Audrey Hepburn’s life and work as an actress, fashion icon, and humanitarian make the ship designed in her honor the perfect home for our 2027 Women-Only Cruise.

NEW FOR 2028 The rise of the Dutch Republic as a commerce powerhouse in the 17th century paved the way for advancements in the fields of art and science during an era of prosperity known as the Dutch Golden Age. The focus of art in this region moved away from religious imagery as a growing middle class created a market for decorative art. Female artists didn't have the opportunity to study the human form by depicting nude models, so many embraced painting still-life scenes. Clara Peeters, a Flemish painter, helped pioneer this style and is considered not only one of the most famous female artists of the period, but one of the Dutch Golden Age’s most influential painters overall.

NEW FOR 2027 Marie Magdalene Dietrich, known to most as Marlene Dietrich, was born in Berlin in 1901. Her passion for performing led her to the silver screen, with starring roles in films like The Blue Angel (1930) and Morocco (1930)—the latter of which features her notorious tuxedo and top hat ensemble. Marlene’s fashion choices, strong personality, sense of humor, and proclivity for speaking her mind made her a star and the perfect source of inspiration for one of our brand-new ships in 2027.

The S.S. Clara’s interiors feature vibrant florals, a frequent subject of Peeter’s masterpieces. At Uniworld, we appreciate “Tiny Noticeable Touches,” and her creations are known for being meticulous, showing details such as dew drops and reflected light. Aboard the S.S. Clara, the same attention to detail and texture comes to life through curated fabrics, selected artworks, and antiqued mirrors. While much isn’t known about Clara Peeters, especially compared to some of her male contemporaries, we are so excited to honor her contributions to art on a new ship cruising the region that inspired her.

The S.S. Marlene showcases art-deco design that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s, the same time the movie industry was growing rapidly, and Marlene’s career was taking off. Geometric patterns, metallic finishes, and jewel tones evoke Hollywood glamour. A strong opponent of the Nazi regime, Marlene became a U.S. citizen during WWII, sold war bonds, and performed for troops on USO tours. Later she turned her passion for performance into a second career as a cabaret singer. This part of her life is reflected in the aft lounge decorated with her LP covers and a record player with her records.

Q&A

A Moment with River Heritage Club Members

with

We’re not the only ones celebrating a 50th anniversary this year. We just had the pleasure of speaking with two River Heritage Club members, Betty and Don Zion, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary onboard a Uniworld cruise— and brought the family with them! It was an honor to have them onboard, and we look forward to traveling with the whole Zion crew again in the future! Do you have stories you would like to share with Uniworld? If so, email us at rhc@uniworld.com!

BETTY & DON

GUEST SPOTLIGHT

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE UNIWORLD—AND SPECIFICALLY CASTLES ALONG THE RHINE—TO CELEBRATE YOUR 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY WITH YOUR FAMILY?

HAVING SAILED WITH UNIWORLD BEFORE, WHAT KEEPS BRINGING YOU BACK? IS IT THE SHIPS, THE CREW, THE DESTINATIONS, OR SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY?

As we approached our 50th wedding anniversary, we invited our family to vote on how and where we would gather to celebrate. Uniworld won hands down! Our family was excited to sail with Uniworld, especially after hearing our rave reviews from previous cruises (Classic Christmas Markets and Brilliant Bordeaux). Castles Along the Rhine was chosen for its beauty, the opportunity to visit four countries, and, of course, the castles.

Each ship and destination is unique and inviting, keeping us curious and ready for the next adventure. If we had to name one thing, though, it is that every time we sail with Uniworld, we feel genuinely welcomed by each and every crew member. It feels like coming home.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE SHARING THE UNIWORLD EXPERIENCE WITH YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN FOR THE FIRST TIME? WAS THERE A MOMENT THAT CAPTURED WHAT MADE THE TRIP SO SPECIAL? Having three generations—all nine of us—sitting together and relaxing at dinner every night was a real highlight. We laughed and shared stories about our day while enjoying an elegant meal. I kept thinking that it just doesn’t get any better than this. IS THERE AN EXPERIENCE, EXCURSION, OR MEMORY THAT YOUR GRANDCHILDREN STILL TALK ABOUT TODAY? Our teenage grandsons were intrigued by their visit to Marksburg Castle and its mighty cannons. The armor and weaponry collection looked right out of a history book, and they even tried on the armor! They are still talking about the barbaric Medieval torture devices.

CELEBRATING YOUR OWN 50TH ANNIVERSARY DURING UNIWORLD'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY IS SUCH A UNIQUE COINCIDENCE. LOOKING BACK, WHAT MADE THAT CELEBRATION ONE YOU'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER? What a blast it was celebrating 50 years right along with Uniworld! We danced up a storm, laughed, and danced some more. It was a perfect partnership, and celebrating together was absolutely over the top. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OTHER FAMILIES WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT TAKING A MULTIGENERATIONAL JOURNEY WITH UNIWORLD? There is no greater joy than being with loved ones. Many of our family's greatest stories, relaxed moments, and shared experiences happened on this cruise. It is a fabulous way to connect all the generations while having a blast.

Chef Robert’s Corner:

THE FLAVORS OF ITALY Perhaps unsurprisingly for a ship sailing around Venice, the S.S. La Venezia is built to showcase Italian cuisine—hence the pizza parlor on the sun deck, where you can enjoy a classic pie and sip an Aperol spritz while you take in gorgeous lagoon views. If you want to recreate this picture-perfect moment at home, we have good news for you: Uniworld’s Culinary Director, Chef Robert, shared our recipes just for you.

PIZZA CAPRESE 2 servings per pizza

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

4 cups "00" flour

1. Prepare the dough: Dissolve the yeast in the water. Add the flour and mix until combined. Add the salt and knead for 10–12 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover and let the dough ferment for 2 hours at room temperature. Divide into two equal dough balls, then refrigerate for 18–24 hours. Finally, remove from the refrigerator 2 hours before baking.

1

cups + 1 Tbsp cold water

2 tsp sea salt ¼ tsp instant dry yeast 9 oz buffalo mozzarella, drained well for at least 1 hour 6 oz ripe cherry tomatoes, halved (about 1¼ cups) Fresh basil leaves Extra virgin olive oil + sea salt to taste

11

2. Prepare the cheese: Drain the buffalo mozzarella and tear it into bite-sized pieces. 3. Shape the pizza: Stretch each dough ball by hand into a 12-inch circle, leaving a slightly thicker edge. 4. Top the pizza: Evenly scatter the mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil. Top with a generous pinch of sea salt and a light drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. 5. If using a wood-fired oven: Bake at 800–900 °F for 60–90 seconds. If using home oven: Bake at 500° F for 7-10 minutes. We recommend preheating the pizza stone, cast iron, or steel baking pan for approximately 45 minutes.

APEROL SPRITZ FOR A PARTY Serves 8

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

1 chilled bottle of Prosecco DOC (750 ml)

1. Pour the Prosecco, Aperol, and soda water into a pitcher.

2 cups Aperol

2. Add a generous portion of ice to 8 large wine glasses.

1 cup soda water (sparkling water) Ice cubes 8 orange slices (1 per glass)

3. Fill your wine glasses with the spritz mixture. 4. Garnish each glass with one fresh orange slice.

CLASSIC TIRAMISU Serves 8

INGREDIENTS 18 oz mascarpone cheese Ladyfinger biscuits (about 36–40 pieces) 4 fresh egg yolks ½ cup superfine sugar 1 cup strong espresso, cooled 2 Tbsp Marsala wine (optional, but traditional) Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting Dark chocolate, finely grated

PREPARATION 1. Brew the espresso and allow it to cool completely. Stir in the Marsala wine. 2. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar for about 5 minutes, until pale, thick, and creamy. Fold the mascarpone into the egg mixture until smooth and silky. 3. Quickly dip each biscuit into the coffee—about 1 second per side. They should absorb some coffee without becoming soggy. Arrange a layer of soaked biscuits in the base of a serving dish as you go. 4. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture evenly over the biscuits. 5. Repeat, layering dipped biscuits and mascarpone until all mascarpone is gone. 6. Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, preferably overnight. 7. Just before serving, dust generously with unsweetened cocoa powder and finish with grated dark chocolate.
