Within Herff, there are student organizations just for engineering students: the Engineering Student Council, the National Society of Black Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers, just to name a few.

Something really amazing is going on in the City of Memphis right now. Our restaurant scene is exploding into a foodie paradise. You can hear live music any day of the week. Bike, walk or run on Greenline trails that connect every part of the city.

Hit up Shelby Farms, one of the largest urban parks in the United States. And then unwind and enjoy nightlife in Cooper-Young, Overton Square and Broad Avenue Arts District.

If you can’t find something to do here, you’re not trying hard enough.

With 400 student-athletes competing in 19 different intercollegiate sports, there is always an opportunity to watch the Tigers compete (students get in free!). The UofM is a charter member of the American Athletic Conference,

and our athletic programs compete at the highest level as an NCAA Division I institution.

It’s the South, so athletics are big. But this is also Memphis, so athletics bring us together to be proud, eat some barbecue and have some good times. Then repeat often.

That’s because Herff helps you build a solid resume while you’re enrolled. Our Academic Internship Program provides students with the valuable, realworld experience that only hands-on internships provide.

SO WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU? The Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) considers three semesters of co-op coursework equivalent to one year’s worth of professional work experience.

Students with co-op credit or internship credit on their academic transcripts get higher starting salaries.

Herff engineering co-op/ internship positions are paid positions with salaries well above minimum wage.

Many of our industrial partners provide on-site training for Herff student interns because they hope to hire them after graduation.

Biomedical engineers work with and develop cutting-edge technologies to tackle grand challenges that define the human experience.

This involves every aspect of healthcare, from diagnostic tools and imaging technologies, to implant, rehabilitative and regenerative medical treatments. Case in point, more than 1 million people every year are able to walk again thanks to advancements in knee and hip replacement implants.

Start solving health problems in Herff’s biomed labs. Grow your own cells on biological active scaffolds to regenerate bone or blood vessels or design the next generation of wearable devices for personal health monitoring.

Right now, we’re developing porous nanocapsules with invisible walls for electrochemical and optical sensors technology that can be ‘tattooed’ on skin to monitor glucose for diabetics.

We don’t want you just to reduce pollution, we want you to reduce pollution and improve roadways at the same time. Right now, we’re designing structures to withstand natural disasters and save countless lives. How’s that for improvement?

Nowadays, what isn’t digital? It’s no secret that electrical and computer engineers are needed more than ever.

Building and designing computer hardware and software, developing sustainable energy, inventing new ways to manipulate signals, communicate information and control machinery are just a few of the things they do. That phone in your pocket? You can thank them for that.

Herff puts you on the front lines of the digital revolution: design devices, develop sustainable energy and find ways to identify someone more accurately than with their fingerprint.

We’re even working on ways to capture brain waves and revolutionize the way we teach and learn. It’s not science fiction. It’s real, and it’s happening right now at Herff. We offer two bachelor of science (BS) degrees: one in Electrical Engineering and one in Computer Engineering. Some of our students pursue and complete both in four years.

ALL DEPARTMENTS offer the Accelerated Bachelor to Masters (ABM) program where students can earn BS/MS degrees in five years. Our programs offer in-depth learning experience to prepare students for research or practice in industry after completion of their respective studies.

Mechanical engineers contribute to society and the economy in many areas — energy, manufacturing, automotive, defense, aerospace, robots and unmanned vehicles, air-conditioning and refrigeration, medical devices and many others. In other words, the majority of the products you use every single day are all made possible by mechanical engineers.

Hit the ground running with one of the broadest skill sets in engineering. Mechanical engineers use their breadth of knowledge, versatility, creativity and teamwork skills to build new products and systems. All those cool things you read about, like establishing colonies on the moon and Mars, 3D printing of biomedical implants or building the next generation aircraft and automobile engines?

They’re all happening right here at Herff. And keep in mind, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for mechanical engineers was $88,430 in May 2019. The possibilities are endless.

Engineering technology is all about using and understanding equipment and concepts to implement engineering designs – the machines, computers and code that bridge the gap between ideas and reality. Engineering technologists work with robotics, industrial automation, computerized machine tools and welding.

Engineering technology encompasses many areas within engineering, like networking, databases, project management, quality and processes. Want to work within manufacturing, distribution or logistics?

Then engineering technology may be your field.

Engineering Technologists are the doers of the engineering world. They like to roll up their sleeves and get in the thick of it. They work with engineers and scientists to produce new technology. There is really no limit to what you can do at Herff!
