Express Yourself at the College of Communication & Fine Arts The College of Communication and Fine Arts (CCFA) at the University of Memphis is a hub of excellence and innovation.

We engage in research, education and practice in the humanities, social sciences, fine and performing arts, architecture and design, and communication disciplines. We aim to provide our students with a well-rounded education and prepare them for active global involvement and professional careers.

CCFA is a place where creativity and individuality are encouraged and respected; it is a place where students are part of a diverse and vibrant learning community.

Our work is based upon the principle that creativity emerges from drawing together different perspectives and knowledge within an interdisciplinary framework. Our mission is to encourage our students to create and explore.

About Us The College of Communication and Fine Arts is home to the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music and the departments of Architecture, Art, Communication, Journalism and Theatre & Dance.

Also part of our academic community are the Art Museum of the University of Memphis (AMUM), the Egyptian Gallery, Jones Hall Gallery, the Fogelman galleries of contemporary art, two galleries in the Art and Communication Building, the Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology, the Center for Multimedia Arts and the Center for Sustainable Design, The Daily Helmsman, and WUMR U92-FM. Our students are exposed to courses drawn from a broad base of the liberal arts and are engaged in individual and small group instruction in their primary fields of study. Our faculty represents a diversity of academic and artistic backgrounds and interests.

CCFA enriches the cultural atmosphere of the University and the community at large through a variety of public programs, including art exhibitions, media presentations, music and dance concerts, theatre performances, lectures, seminars and workshops.

Degrees On the undergraduate level, CCFA offers Bachelor of Arts degrees (BA) in Art History, Communication, and Journalism; Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees (BFA) in Architecture, Interior Design, Art and Theatre; and Bachelor of Music (BM) degrees in Music and Music Industry. We also offer minors in Art, Art History, Communication, Dance, Journalism, Photography, Music and Theatre.

Internships Each semester, more than 2,000 U of M students intern in schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and nonprofit and arts organizations. Through internships, students have the opportunity to enhance professional development; build an effective resume; improve knowledge, skills, and the abilities to meet career goals; and develop a network of professional contacts.

Internships are an integral part of all programs in the College of Communication and Fine Arts. They are a high priority and, in some departments, a requirement.

The College of Communication and Fine Arts is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Where applicable, our departments and the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music are also accredited by their respective accrediting agencies.

CCFA Alumni are literally everywhere. You may see them hosting their own show on the Food Network, on stage at Georgia Shakespeare, touring with multi-platinum pop star Sean Kingston, showing their work at the Whitney Biennial, working as chief of internal information at a U.S. Air Base in Japan or working as a founding principal of a leading architecture firm.

Academic Calendar We operate on the semester system. The fall term runs from late August to December, and the spring term from mid-January to early May. We offer a two-week pre-summer session, two four-week summer sessions and a full-term summer semester.

Student Body Students completing degrees at the College of Communication and Fine Arts come from many states and many foreign nations. With a 15 to 1 classroom ratio, we offer students the ability to work closely with faculty.

Faculty CCFA faculty members publish their research nationally and internationally, and are recognized in their respective areas for innovative research, engaged scholarship, and artistic and creative work. Under faculty leadership, the University of Memphis Opera won first place for Best Opera Production in the National Opera Association (NOA) competition in 2006 and 2008, and the University of Memphis Symphony Orchestra placed second in the American Prize competition for Orchestra Performance (college/university) in 2011. Students and faculty in the Department of Architecture designed the TERRA sustainable demonstration house, the first LEED Platinum building in West Tennessee.

CCFA faculty members have received numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA); have won awards from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), as well as CINE Golden Eagle, GRAMMY®, EMMY®, and Peabody Awards; have exhibited their work nationally and internationally; and are Fulbright Award and Rome Prize recipients.

Housing Our Living Learning Communities provide students the opportunity to truly live, eat and breathe their courses of study. The Department of Architecture has two apartment-style residences, each featuring a fully equipped design studio and wireless computer access in addition to private bedrooms, a kitchen, common areas and enclosed patio spaces.

The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music is one of only four units on campus sharing the Living Learning Residence Complex (LLC), the University’s newest residential facility. This state-of-the-art facility offers exceptional amenities, such as card/key access to the building and room, heat/AC control directly from each room, wireless access and ethernet capabilities in each room, and a comfortable lounge area on each floor. Music students living in the LLC enjoy on-site music practice rooms and a fully equipped music classroom.

Scholarships The College of Communication and Fine Arts offers various scholarships and awards that are available to students who major in one of our programs. Scholarships are highly competitive.

Additionally, the University’s Undergraduate Scholarship Office awards hundreds of academic scholarships each year to entering freshmen.

At the University of Memphis, the study of architecture and interior design encompasses the art and science of design in a sequence of foundation courses, design studios, and support courses that engage students in the processes and professional standards of design and technology necessary for shaping the built environment. The BFA in Architecture and the Master of Architecture degrees make up the “4 + 2” professional curriculum in Architecture. The BFA in Architecture is a pre-professional degree. At the University of Memphis, the professional degree in Architecture is the Master of Architecture degree. The BFA in Interior Design is a four-year professional degree. It is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA).

The Department of Architecture prepares students to enter the professional practice of architecture or interior design and to serve society through engaged scholarship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative expression. All design studios work with community partners on projects in the Memphis region. All students have 24-hour access to their personal studio workspace, and certain advanced students work from the department’s downtown studio.

Students intending to pursue the BFA in Architecture or Interior Design must complete the Department of Architecture Entrance Evaluation in addition to the standard admission requirements of the University of Memphis.

The Department of Journalism offers hands-on training by faculty members with extensive professional experience. Our students consistently compete in and win national and regional competitions and scholarships.

Students benefit from the department’s strong ties to successful alumni and affiliations with professional organizations. The department has an extensive student internship program and a mentoring program that pairs students with alumni. Campus chapters of media organizations give every journalism student the opportunity to learn more about future career opportunities. The Department of Journalism is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). The public relations program has earned the Public Relations Society of America’s Certification in Education for Public Relations (CEPR).

At the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, we are dedicated to preparing students for careers in music by instilling in them the importance of thorough and thoughtful preparation in all musical endeavors and by engaging them in a comprehensive learning experience. We punctuate study with a wide variety of performance opportunities within the School, the community and internationally. This total immersion approach is realized by faculty members who have active careers in performance, recording and publishing.

Our ensembles range from classical to contemporary, and performing opportunities are available to all students. The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

To enroll in the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, prospective students must apply and be accepted by both the School and the University of Memphis. Students applying to the School are required to audition or participate in an orientation and to take theory and piano placement exams.

Music business and recording technology applicants must meet academic standards before attending an orientation/audition.

Students who declare major study in degree programs other than music can apply to become a music minor.

Students who do not plan to major or minor in music but wish to participate in the marching band must schedule an audition by calling the band office at 901.678.2264.

The Department of Theatre & Dance mounts a full season of plays and dance concerts in a variety of performance venues. Our students experience theatre on stage, in the costume and scene shops, alongside guest artists, in local theatres and through European exchange programs. Students also have the opportunity to choose a Dance Minor.

The theatre performance program allows incoming freshmen to audition and be cast during their first semesters. Design students will also participate in the department’s productions during their first semesters.

Our emphasis on professionalism is reflected by our excellent faculty, who are dedicated to nurturing individual creativity. The Department of Theatre & Dance is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST).

Admission Requirements Admission to the BFA program in the Performance and Design & Technical Production concentrations is based on successful admittance to the University of Memphis. After the initial admission, students are expected to audition and interview annually.

Admission to the Musical Theatre program is a three-step process in which students apply first to the University of Memphis, then to the Department of Theatre & Dance, and finally, they participate in a Musical Theatre audition.
